Though reviewers love driving the 2012 BMW X6, they question its purpose. It’s a high-performance SUV with a sports-car price tag and limited utility.

Reviewers can’t figure out what type of vehicle the BMW X6 is, but after driving it, they’ve decided that they don’t care, and call it one of the best-handling, most fun-to-drive SUVs on the market. However, the auto press emphasizes that those looking for practicality or value should look elsewhere. “We set out to determine what the BMW X6 is, and this is our answer: BMW X6 a fully capable, beautifully finished, and superbly comfortable four-place sports car with a trunk big enough for almost any adventure and the ability to tow up to three tons of what won’t fit inside,” writes Car and Driver.

The BMW X6 is a vehicle reviewers love, but consumers may have a hard time justifying a $60,000 purchase. Though its base trim costs $11,700 more than the BMW X5, it has less cargo space and can seat only four (a fifth seat was added as a $350 option this year). The BMW X6’s suspension is tuned tightly to make it sporty, but some reviewers say that makes it uncomfortable as a daily driver. The ActiveHybrid X6 adds $30,000 to the base price and makes 100 more horsepower than the base BMW X6, but it gets worse fuel economy than the base model. And the BMW X6’s 2.5-ton curb weight cuts down on any fuel economy that could have resulted from the turbocharged, direct-injected six-cylinder engine.
But, if you’re in the market for a fun-to-drive SUV with loads of interior amenities and aren’t constrained by a budget, reviewers say you won’t find anything better than the BMW X6. It takes corners like a pro, and the upgraded V8 engine blasts it to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds. Plus, it comes stuffed to the gills with standard features like front and rear parking sensors, a power liftgate, leather upholstery and adaptive cruise control. To some shoppers, the BMW X6 will make no sense at all, but to others, it’s an ideal combination of track star and people-hauler.

If you’re in the market for a practical SUV, the BMW X6 definitely isn’t it. But, you can still get a fun-to-drive, luxury midsize SUV with plenty of space for your family for a class-competitive price. The BMW X5 has an optional third row of seating, and its 75.2 cubic feet of maximum cargo capacity easily beats the X6’s 59.7 cubic-foot maximum. Plus, the base X5 starts at $47,200, which is $11,700 less than the base X6. And you can still be a speed demon in your X5. A high-performance X5 M starts at $86,400, which is expensive, but undercuts the BMW X6 M by $3,100.
If you’re attracted by the BMW X6’s lifted-back coupe styling but think its starting price is too high, check out the Acura ZDX. It’s a similar coupe-like SUV with an emphasis on performance, but its MSRP is just a hair more than $46,000. That means it costs less than the BMW X6 by about $12,900. Plus, the ZDX comes standard with five seats, which is one more than the BMW X6.

The BMW Z4 is one of the more intriguing sports cars available. It's a successor to the original Z3 and is the company's only two-seat sports car. BMW Z4 features traditional characteristics such as a front-engine/rear-drive layout, a hunkered-down stance, a long hood and rearward positioning of driver and passenger. While the first BMW Z4 featured a traditional soft top, the current BMW Z4 model has a sleek retractable hardtop that makes this fun-loving roadster a more viable all-year car choice.

The current BMW Z4 also represents a slight change in philosophy for BMW's roadster, as it sacrifices ultimate handling for greater ride comfort and overall refinement. The BMW Z4 result is a grand touring coupe and roadster, and one of the most rounded sports cars money can buy.

The BMW Z4 is offered in three trim levels: sDrive30i, sDrive35i and sDrive35is. The BMW Z4 30i gets a 3.0-liter inline-6 that produces 255 horsepower and 220 pound-feet of torque. The 35i comes with a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 good for 300 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque. Both cars have a six-speed manual transmission as standard. BMW Z4 six-speed conventional automatic is optional on the sDrive30i, while the optional transmission for the sDrive35i is a seven-speed dual-clutch automated manual (DCT). The BMW Z4 35is gets a revised version of the regular 35i's engine, boasting 335 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque with a temporary overboost function that pumps torque up to 369 lb-ft. DCT comes standard.
Though the primary distinction among the trims involves their engines, there are some equipment differences. The BMW Z4 sDrive 30i and sDrive 35i come standard with xenon headlights, HD radio, six-way manually adjustable seats, and adjustable driving settings that change the programming for the steering, throttle -- and if so equipped -- automatic transmission. The BMW Z4 sDrive35i adds sun-reflective leather upholstery, automatic climate control and fancy aluminum interior trim -- all of which are optional on the cheaper model. The BMW Z4 sDrive 35is is similar but comes standard with the M Sport package. Other options include Bluetooth, power seats with driver memory functions, heated seats and steering wheel, an iPod interface, an upgraded stereo and a navigation system (includes the iDrive electronics interface).

In reviews, we've found the BMW Z4 to be an impressive and highly refined sport touring car. The interior is surprisingly spacious, as is the trunk when the retractable roof is raised. When it's lowered, though, there's only room for a small suitcase. Every Z4 has high handling limits, but its reflexes and communication with the driver are a bit of a letdown due to a numb electric power steering system, a fairly hefty curb weight and the Z4's predilection for understeer. Still, we think most buyers will be appreciative of the Z4's firm yet compliant ride and sensational engines that make a drive up a winding coastal or country road a wonderful.

BMW X1 at the forefront of many a mind at this precise moment will be the word ‘why?' Possibly prefaced by ‘Dear' and ‘God'. The BMW X1 is the latest in an increasingly long line of confused and confusing BMW products. Much like the 5-Series GT, it demands a double take, just to work out exactly what you're looking at. Do you need glasses? Or does someone at BMW X1 need medicating?The whole soft-roader/crossover idea is hard to get your head around. Neither as good at being a car as a car, nor anywhere near as capable of SUV-ness as a proper SUV. BMW X1 it's a lifestyle statement, and that's a dubious concept whatever you're buying into: a novelty ringtone, a ‘wacky' hair cut. If something doesn't exist because it needs to, chances are it makes you look like a bit of tool. And the existence of a compact pseudo-SUV is a tough case to make.But here's how to make it: the existing BMW X1 X-range, 3, 5 and 6, account for one fifth of all BMW X1's global sales, so from a purely fiscal point of view, that inevitable ‘why' is seen off with ‘well why wouldn't you?' The BMW X1 should sell in droves.

Then there's the drive. The BMW X1 feels as large as it looks. Which is to say, not massive, but it's no 1-Series. An elevated driving position probably has something to do with this, but so does a kerbweight of 1,670kg. That's a hell of a lot for what is, nominally at least, a small car. But with the flagship 123d that BMW X1 is launching first, you get 201bhp and 295 lb ft of torque, delivered with typically Teutonic gusto through a seamless six-speed auto. So it may feel a little leaden at manoeuvring speeds, but once you're out and about it's genuinely brisk. And although in-gear acceleration is a far better measure of useful day-to-day performance, the standard stats are none too shabby either: BMW X1 0-62mph in 7.3 seconds and a top speed of 127mph.

What's more, despite the increase in weight and height over a normal 1- or 3-Series, the expectation of dynamic competence that hangs over any BMW X1 is essentially well met. The steering is a bit vague, but this lends itself to cruising comfort over driving involvement, and sensibly so. And regardless of this, the BMW X1 feels superbly planted and relatively roll-free. If BMW can make an X5 handle, they can certainly see to this. But the compromise is a ride that is slightly too firm, transmitting more vibration through the cabin than you would expect from a car with what is otherwise such a high level of refinement.

BMW X1 Road noise is also a tad generous, all things considered, and that's on 17-inch alloys which, if we're honest, could do with being a lot larger from an aesthetic point of view. BMW X1 Spec one of these up properly and it threatens to be a right bone shaker.There are other issues that warrant a mention too. Rear visibility is lousy and, despite plenty of headroom, there's nowhere for lanky legs in the back. Fine for younger kids admittedly, but in a BMW X1 car with these proportions you'd expect to be able to get adults in there.

BMW X1 has a huge boot though, with 420 litres expanding to over three times that with the rear seats folded flat. And the raised ride height makes this all very easy to access.

So with that in mind, along with the similarly high cabin, modest dimensions (on Planet SUV) and economical diesel, theBMW X1 starts to sound like a watertight proposition for young families.

And as the car goes on stream this case will only be strengthened, for BMW X1 is planning to offer the car with smaller diesels (no petrol options are even coming to the UK) and a more affordable and frugal rear-wheel-drive option, dispensing with both weight and complexity. These lesser-spotted BMW X1 s will manage up to 54.3mpg without giving away too much in terms of performance.

There is a catch though. Priced from £22,660 for the basic 140bhp rear-wheel-drive 18d to £29,055 for the all-wheel-drive 23d we've got here, no BMW X1 is going to be cheap. BMW X1 is eager to stress that this is the first ‘premium' car in its market, although they seem to have forgotten the arrival of the Infiniti EX. But new cars aside, if you choose to include, say, the Volkswagen Tiguan as a point of comparison, as BMW X1 itself does in its comparative data, then you ought to include the Land Rover Freelander too, which was fairly premium last time we looked. (Not that a Tiguan is much like slumming it either...)

Whatever, there is no shortage of competition when it comes to small SUVs. It was always a sticking point for BMW X1that it made the X3 quite so expensive, and now that it's managed to redress that, Beemer's marketeers might well take some market share from the likes of Land Rover and VW, particularly from the groundswell of people unwilling to be seen driving something that is readily labelled as a ‘4x4'.

But there is risk inherent in this. It's very hard to label the BMW X1 as anything, except ‘odd', and not everyone will like that. After all, what's wrong with a 3-Series Touring for the same kind of money? Clue: absolutely nothing. And if you want a sort-of-SUV, chances are you secretly want a proper SUV. Which brings you back to your Freelanders, Tiguans and Volvo XC60s.Make no mistake, the BMW X1 is a good product. But is it one that anyone will actually want?

For 2011, the BMW M3 coupe and sedan are now available with a Competition package that adds a lowered suspension, 19-inch wheels, a wider track and reprogrammed electronic damping and stability controls. This isn't as hard-core as the previous BMW M3's Competition package, but it should still deliver that much more handling acumen -- especially for those who track their cars.BMW M3 is a sports car that

doesn't look like a sports car. It has too many seats, and one body style has too many doors. It has a usable trunk. You could drive it to Kansas in complete comfort. And yet the 2011 BMW M3 has a 414-horsepower V8. It goes from zero to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds. It stops from 60 so quickly your eyes may find themselves on an outbound journey from their sockets, and it sticks in corners with the tenacity of super glue. The BMW M3 truly is the sports car for people who still need the practicality (and/or anonymity) of a regular old sedan, coupe or convertible.

Of course this wolf in sheep's clothing nature is not new to the BMW M3, which has been kicking other sports cars in the teeth since the 1980s. The car's free-revving engines have always been a big part of that, and this latest BMW M3 is the first (and likely the last) to feature a normally aspirated V8. Essentially the M5's V10 with two cylinders removed, this manic 4.0-liter eight-cylinder sings a glorious wail at full throttle all the way up to its sky-high redline of 8,400 rpm.

The BMW M3 story isn't all about the engine, though. The ultimate "ultimate driving machine" must go around corners, and the BMW M3's brilliantly balanced and capable chassis gets the job done. There's a level of communication and involvement with the BMW M3 that makes you feel in complete control, and it's one that's increasingly being lost in the new world of electric power steering and selectable driver settings.
Indeed, the 2011 BMW M3 still stands as the most well-rounded choice in the hyper performance luxury car class. Audi offers the same body style choices, but its S4 and S5 trade some all-out performance for better civility, though the new RS5 should be a better match. Cadillac's CTS-V (now as a coupe and wagon, too) will outrun the BMW M3 in a straight line but isn't as agile around corners. The story is similar with the sedan-only Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG. Really, you can't go wrong with any of them. But if you really want a sports car that doesn't look like one, the BMW M3 is the only game in town.The 2011 BMW M3 is available in sedan, coupe and convertible body styles. Standard equipment includes 18-inch wheels, a limited-slip rear differential, automatic and adaptive xenon headlights, automatic wipers, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, eight-way power front seats (with manual thigh extender, adjustable side bolsters and four-way lumbar adjustment), leather-cloth upholstery, driver memory functions and a 10-speaker sound system with HD radio and an auxiliary audio jack. The BMW M3 coupe adds a carbon-fiber roof and split-folding rear seat, while the convertible adds a fully powered retractable hardtop and sun-reflective leather.The Cold Weather package adds heated front seats and retractable headlight washers. The Premium package adds power-folding auto-dimming mirrors, BMW Assist telematics, Bluetooth, leather upholstery and different interior trim. The Technology package adds in BMW M3 electronic damping control, M Drive adjustable settings, keyless ignition/entry, the iDrive electronics interface and a navigation system with voice controls and real-time traffic.BMW M3 most of the above items are available as stand-alone options along with 19-inch wheels, a sunroof (deletes carbon-fiber roof on the coupe), rear parking sensors, automatic high beams, power rear sunshade (coupe and sedan), a split-folding rear seat (sedan), satellite radio, an iPod/USB adapter and a 16-speaker premium sound system.The coupe and sedan can be equipped with the Competition package, which adds EDC (electronic damping control), 19-inch wheels with high-performance tires, a lowered suspension and different programming for EDC and stability control.A 4.0-liter V8 powers every 2011 BMW M3, sending 414 hp and 295 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels. BMW M3 six-speed manual transmission is standard, and a seven-speed dual-clutch automated-manual transmission (M DCT) is optional. The latter offers manual operation via steering-wheel paddles as well as a full automatic mode. All M3s feature a specialized locking rear differential.

We've tested just about every variety of BMW M3. The BMW M3 coupe with traditional manual went from zero to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds, while the sedan with a manual and the convertible with M DCT did it in 4.8 seconds. With either transmission, EPA-estimated fuel economy is 14 mpg city/20 mpg highway and 16 mpg combined. A manual-equipped convertible gets 13 mpg city.Standard safety features for the 2010 BMW M3 include front seat side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags, antilock disc brakes, traction control and stability control. The convertible lacks the side curtains, but the regular front side airbags extend up to head level, and there are also pop-up rollover hoops. Braking is phenomenal -- in our 60-0-mph braking test, the BMW M3 came to a halt in just 100 feet, which is among the shortest distances we've ever recorded.The BMW M3 itself has not been crash-tested, but the 3 Series sedan scored four stars (out of five) for frontal impacts for both driver and passenger in government tests. It garnered a perfect five stars for side impacts for both front and rear occupants. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crash tests gave the BMW M3 3 Series sedan "Good" ratings (the highest possible) in both frontal-offset and side-impact crash testing, although the convertible received a second-lowest "Marginal" score.The BMW M3's sport seats are at once outstandingly supportive in hard driving and among the most comfortable we've sat in for long trips. BMW M3 backseat is a bit cramped, however -- expected in the two-door models, but not in the sedan, which trails rivals from Audi and Mercedes in rear headroom. In the coupe, an automatic seatbelt arm delivers front occupants their belts, eliminating the need for torso-twisting maneuvers. TheBMW M3 convertible's heat-reflective leather does a wonderful job of keeping the seats from absorbing too much heat from the sun with the top down.Build and materials quality inside the BMW M3 are excellent. However, the overall design lacks visual interest despite the availability of metallic and wood accents. The current version of iDrive -- mandatory with the optional navigation system -- is the best yet by far, featuring extra physical buttons and a revised menu structure for much more intuitive operation. daily-driver ride quality, coupe and convertible body styles and a phenomenal race-bred V10 that belongs in any conversation about the top engines in the world. The previous BMW M6 from the 1980s is certifiably iconic, as is the V12-powered 850CSi coupe that followed in the 1990s. So what is it about the current BMW M6 that keeps it from being mentioned in the same breath as its illustrious predecessors?
BMW M6 Plain and simple, it's the car's styling. A subjective matter, to be sure, but one that also has a way of separating the legendary cars from the pretty good ones. The BMW M6 has got it all on paper, from knuckle-whitening performance to high-tech features, but its oddly protruding trunk lid and droopy headlights knock its elegance index down a notch. Still, there are those for whom the BMW M6's styling will seem edgy, different, daring. These are the people who will buy the BMW M6, and they'll know better than anyone what a downright thrilling car this is to drive.
Having said that, we've repeatedly slapped the BMW M6 with two performance-related demerits: The steering feel falls short of BMW's customary high standards, and the lurch-prone SMG single-clutch automated manual is well behind these dual-clutch times. However, you can get a conventional six-speed manual if you want, which fixes the SMG situation, and the rest of the BMW M6 is so entertaining that the subpar steering is hardly a deal-breaker.

For 2010, one additionally previous demerit has been erased thanks to an updated iDrive system. Like other 2010 BMW models, the BMW M6's iDrive gets a new interface with more sensible-to-use menus, extra buttons for accessing oft-used features and a hard-drive-based navigation system. With this fixed, one's consideration of the BMW M6 could very well come down to styling. If classic looks is your thing, you'd be better off going with a Porsche 911 (the current model has got its aesthetic groove back), a Jaguar XKR or the coupe-only Maserati GranTurismo. But if all-out performance and daily-driver flexibility are high on your list of priorities, the 2010 BMW M6 is hard to beat.
The 2010 BMW M6 is offered as either a coupe or convertible. Based on the 6 Series, the BMW M6 comes standard with 19-inch double-spoke wheels, a carbon-fiber roof (coupe only) a body kit (including a more aggressive front airdam, side-sill extensions and a rear diffuser), adaptive xenon headlights, adjustable suspension dampers, leather-upholstered 12-way power front sport seats with driver memory settings, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, Bluetooth, the revised iDrive interface with a hard-drive-based navigation system featuring real-time traffic updates, and a 13-speaker Harman Kardon surround-sound audio system. The convertible comes with a power soft top.
Options include a head-up display, keyless entry/ignition, satellite radio, HD Radio, iPod/USB integration and leather trim for the dash and console. Walnut wood trim is standard in the M6, but olive ash wood and carbon-fiber trim are also available.

BMW M6

The rear-wheel-drive 2010 BMW M6 is powered by a 5.0-liter V10 that pumps out a thrilling 500 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. A seven-speed single-clutch automated manual gearbox called SMG is standard, and it can be operated via wheel-mounted shift paddles, manual shift-lever manipulation or a full-automatic mode. A six-speed manual transmission is available at no additional cost.
The BMW M6 makes quick work of acceleration tests, as you might expect. We've timed an SMG-equipped coupe at just 4.6 seconds to 60 mph en route to a 12.8-second quarter-mile. Expect the heavier convertible BMW M6 to require a few extra tenths. EPA fuel economy estimates for all BMW M6 models are an impressively bad 11 mpg city/17 mpg highway and 13 mpg in mixed driving.The 2010 BMW M6 comes standard with multilevel stability control, antilock disc brakes, front-seat side airbags, side curtain airbags for the coupe, automatic rollover hoops for the convertible and front and rear parking sensors.The 2010 BMW M6's dashboard layout is clean and attractive, but it's basically lifted out of the 5 Series sedan, so it's not particularly sporty relative to, say, the dash Porsche puts into the 911. Materials quality, however, is absolutely first-rate. The newly revised iDrive system with hard-drive-based navigation is finally a competitive infotainment interface, thanks to additional physical buttons around the control knob and a new menu structure that just makes a lot more sense. As ever, it also provides access to in-depth functions like the maximum-performance "P500 Sport" mode that unleashes all 500 hp (400 hp being the default output) with instantaneous throttle response.

BMW M6

The BMW M6's front sport seats are among the best in the world, offering both excellent lateral support and drive-all-day comfort. The tight rear seats are strictly for short trips, though. Trunk capacity for the coupe is 13 cubic feet, while the convertible manages a decent 12.4 cubes (10.6 with the top down).

The BMW M6's V10 is the kind of engine we wish we could carry with us from car to car. With a redline in excess of 8,000 rpm, it's got the goods to satisfy wannabe F1 drivers, yet there's plenty of midrange punch as well. Throttle response is immediate, and the engine note is about as close to a real racecar soundtrack as you can get on the street. Unfortunately, the SMG gearbox always lurches on upshifts, an unavoidable consequence of its outdated single-clutch design. The BMW M6 six-speed manual transmission rectifies this problem, although in testing of the mechanically identical M5, we found the manual prone to overheating. In aggressive cornering, the 2010 BMW M6 is a willing companion thanks to its taut chassis and wide tires, though advanced drivers will find the steering feel wanting -- an unusual shortcoming for a BMW. As a daily driver, the BMW M6 is impressively quiet and comfortable despite its sporting pedigree.

The 2011 Lexus IS 250 looks the part of a sport sedan, and this year's minor face-lift adds to its athletic appearance. The new oblique front fascia strakes and optional LED daytime running lights definitely increase the sense of visual aggression. But are appearances enough, or is the Lexus IS 250 a weakling in a

letterman's jacket? With only a 2.5-liter V6, the Lexus IS 250 is a bit like a bench warmer on the junior varsity team. But hey, it still gets to wear the jacket, right?Beneath its edgy exterior, the Lexus IS 250 is as refined as your typical Lexus IS. Comfort and luxury take priority over performance, and the car gets your attention with a top-notch cabin and solid workmanship. On the highway, the Lexus IS 250 is nearly silent in its operation and isolates occupants from the harsh outside world.This focus on comfort comes at the expense of athleticism, however. When you're trying to have fun, there's plenty of body roll, and the lifeless steering does little to encourage exuberance. This is further compounded by a 204-horsepower 2.5-liter V6 that achieves good fuel economy but lacks the oomph to stir the soul.In its defense, Lexus IS 250 does offer some performance upgrades through the new F Sport package and dealer-installed accessories. Then again, if buyers really are that interested in a sportier Lexus IS, they can always upgrade to the more powerful IS 350 or raucous IS F. Unfortunately, all of these Lexus IS variants suffer from a lack of interior space. A cramped backseat and limited headroom might deter those who frequently shuttle multiple passengers.

LEXUS IS

On either side of the comfort/performance scale, the 2011 Lexus IS 250 remains a second-stringer among star athletes. Buyers who lean toward comfort will find similar luxury and more space in alternatives that include the Acura TL, Audi A4, Cadillac CTS, Mercedes C-Class and Volkswagen CC. And if you want real performance to go along with sporty appearances, we suggest checking out the BMW 3 Series or Infiniti G Sedan.le
The 2011 Lexus IS 250 is a compact luxury sedan that is offered in rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive trim levels, which correspond to drivetrain choices. The other Lexus IS models, including the convertibles and high-performance IS F, are reviewed separately.

The Luxury Lexus IS package adds xenon headlamps, auto-dimming outside mirrors, automatic wipers, a power rear sunshade, driver memory functions, ventilated front seats, a power-adjustable steering wheel and wood trim. RWD models gain 18-inch wheels.
The new F Sport Package (available on RWD models with an automatic transmission) adds dark-finish 18-inch F Sport wheels, grille inserts, front and rear spoilers, a sport-tuned suspension, and heated F Sport seats with microfiber inserts and leather bolsters. Front and rear parking sensors are a stand-alone option. Additional F Sport options include 18-inch wheels for AWD models, 19-inch wheels for RWD models, a performance air intake, a sport clutch (manual transmission only), a performance exhaust system, upgraded brakes, sport suspension components, a quick-shift kit and a carbon-fiber engine cover and shift knob.

It's not an overstatement to say that the BMW 5 Series sets the standard for premium sport sedans and up until the current generation, wagons, too. Introduced in the United States for 1972, the midsize BMW 5 Series has long offered a near-perfect blend of performance, luxury and interior room.

Most BMW 5 Series cars you'll come across new or used are rear-wheel drive; however, all-wheel drive has been optional in recent years. Most BMW 5s also have an inline six-cylinder engine, though BMW 5 has offered V8 versions since 1994 and the current generation uses turbocharging on all but the base engine.
When people ask us to recommend luxury cars, BMW 5 Series is invariably high on the list. Wealthier shoppers may gravitate toward the newer models loaded with technology, but older BMW 5 Series cars can be just as satisfying to drive and own.
The BMW 5 Series was completely redesigned for 2011. Unlike past versions, only a sedan is available, as the wagon has been replaced in North America by the BMW 5 Series GT (discussed in a separate review).
The base of BMW 5 is 528i features a 3.0-liter inline-6 good for 240 horsepower and 230 pound-feet of torque. Stepping up to the 535i gets you a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 that produces 300 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque -- this is definitely the just-right choice for most. Finally, the 550i has a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 that produces 400 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque. Each model comes standard with rear-wheel drive and a six-speed manual transmission. An eight-speed automatic is optional and all-wheel drive should be a late-model-year introduction.

BMW 5

The BMW 5 Series is better equipped than previous generations, with standard features that include a sunroof,BMW 5 have power seats, a power tilt-telescoping steering wheel, Bluetooth and a 12-speaker sound system. Typical luxury upgrades (depending on the model) include adaptive xenon headlights, parking sensors, navigation, night-vision camera, active cruise control, an automatic parallel parking system, ventilated front seats and heavenly 14-way "multicontour" front seats.
Compared to the previous-generation BMW 5, the current car returns to a more conservative appearance, one that shows a stronger family resemblance to other BMW sedans. It is also bigger and heavier, while mechanically sharing much with the 7 Series. Interior controls and electronics were also upgraded to the latest BMW norm, and the design itself returned to a more driver-centered dash layout. In many ways, the latest BMW 5 Series represents a visual return to the past while carrying on the technological advancements of the present and future.
Indeed, those technological advancements can best be seen under the hood, where turbocharging has yielded impressive gains in fuel economy. The new BMW 5 have electric power steering is about on par with the old system in terms of feel, but low-speed effort has been greatly improved. Active rear-wheel-steering is also new to the 5. In total, the BMW 5 Series remains one of the most confidence-inspiring and unflappable midsize sport sedans you can drive and buy.
The previous, fifth-generation BMW 5 Series was produced from 2004-'10. On the surface, this BMW 5 Series incorporated bold styling cues that departed from BMW's traditional styling language established over the preceding four generations. Inside, the BMW 5 boasted one of the most spacious and comfortable cabins in its class, BMW 5 particularly when optioned with the fantastic multicontour front seats.
BMW 5 there were a number of different model designations used for this generation, as well as a wagon body style. For 2004 and '05, it was offered only in sedan form and only with rear-wheel drive. There were two six-cylinder models, the 184-hp 525i and 225-hp 530i, along with a top-line V8 version, the 325-hp 545i. Throughout this generation, BMW 5 have six-speed manual transmission was standard and a six-speed automatic optional. For 2006, the entire engine and model lineup was refreshed. The six-cylinders both displaced 3.0 liters, resulting in a more spirited 215-hp 525i and a 255-hp 530i. The top-of-the-line sedan became the 550i and featured a 360-hp 4.8-liter V8.
The BMW 5 Series wagon also arrived for 2006. It was offered in a single 530xi model and all-wheel drive came standard. Additionally, all-wheel drive became optional for the 530 sedan. For 2007, additional standard equipment was added like an auxiliary input jack and BMW Assist, while new options include high-definition radio, BMW's Night Vision system and 20-way-adjustable front seats.
For 2008, the six-cylinder engines were replaced. The base engine was now found in the BMW 5, which featured a 3.0-liter 230-hp inline-6. The midgrade choice became the 535i with its twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-6 good for 300 hp. Indeed, we'd argue this was the best choice as it offered similar performance for less money than the unchanged 550i. The xDrive all-wheel-drive system was now optional on the 528i and 535i sedans, while the wagon could only be had in 535i xDrive form.
Another area a used shopper should note is the system called iDrive, which corralled audio, climate, navigation and communication functions using a central LCD screen and console-mounted control dial. This system was especially cumbersome to use and could make seemingly simple tasks a confusing, multistep affair. For 2009, the BMW 5 Series received an updated iDrive control knob and menu buttons, but the old cumbersome menu structure remained the same. For 2010, the entire iDrive system was updated with the menu structure of newer BMWs as long as you ordered the navigation system.

BMW 5

This BMW 5 Series was a well-balanced machine that could handle aggressive driving on winding back roads just as easily as it dispatched weekday commutes on crumbling expressways. The BMW 5's adeptness at both ride comfort and handling prowess borders on the amazing. The steering was equally sublime, with perfect weighting and a near-telepathic feel -- however, it could be rather stiff in parking lots. If you like the styling and aren't irritated by its electronics interface, the BMW 5 Series is an excellent choice for a used luxury car.
The fourth-generation BMW 5 Series was produced from 1997-2003. Many purists consider this the finest era for the BMW 5 Series, as exceptional on-road dynamics, premium furnishings and unparalleled refinement came together in one classically styled package. Resale value has always been high for this generation, so expect to spend more than you would for competitors of similar age. Reliability has been strong as well.
Provided it's well maintained, any car from this generation is worth your consideration. For 1997 and '98, only sedans were offered: a 528i with a 190-hp 2.8-liter inline-6 and a 540i with a 282-hp 4.4-liter V8. The wagon joined the lineup in 1999 and was available with either engine, both of which gained variable valve timing that year. In 2001, the 528i sedan got a new 225-hp 3.0-liter six and became the 530i; the 528 wagon was dropped. BMW 5 also added an entry-level 184-hp 525i sedan and wagon to the lineup.
Third-generation BMW 5 Series cars (1989-'95) are still common as well. Although not as perfectly balanced as its successor, this car was highly regarded in its day. If you find one in good condition, you'll almost certainly find it enjoyable to own. The best years were 1994 and '95 when BMW offered V8 power in two BMW 5 Series with the 530i sedan and wagon (215 hp) and the 540i sedan (282 hp).

BMW has long offered fine driving cars for every luxury budget, though most have been high on door count. The BMW 6 Series coupe and convertible are for those seeking Bimmer performance two-door style in a high-end package that's noticeably more extravagant than the company's entry-level offerings.In many ways, one can consider the most recent BMW 6 Series to be a two-door variant of the company's 5 Series sedan. The singular (non-M) BMW 6 Series model, the 650i, inherited most of the contemporaneous 550i's running gear, including in BMW 6 Series 4.8-liter V8. The resulting 360 horsepower means speed comes quite naturally to the BMW 6 Series. In fact, its agile handling, swift braking and slick pair of transmissions make it a great performer all around, while a composed ride quality and supportive seats keep comfort levels high.
The BMW 6 Series coupe and convertible are some of the more interesting luxury two-doors on the market. Furthermore, a competitive pricing strategy on BMW's part makes them a better value than many other European-brand two-doors. As an imperfect but unexpectedly affordable coupe or convertible, the BMW 6 Series is hard to ignore.

BMW 6 SERIES

Buyers should note that there is no BMW 6 Series for 2011, but it will be back for the 2012 model year once again in coupe and convertible form.The most recent BMW 6 Series coupe and convertible was produced from 2004-'10. Originally, it came equipped with a 4.4-liter V8 rated at 325 hp and 330 pound-feet of torque and was known as the 645Ci. For 2006, the BMW 6 Series name changed to 650i (minus the "C") and its engine was updated to a 4.8-liter V8 that produced 360 hp and 360 lb-ft of torque. Driving characteristics between the 645Ci and 650i are very similar: The smaller V8 shared the 4.8-liter's athletic character but had a slightly less vigorous power band. If you find a well-kept 645Ci on the used market, you won't find it lacking from a performance standpoint.
Prior to 2008, BMW 6 Series have six-speed transmissions available: a traditional manual, a traditional automatic and BMW's SMG, which used an electronically controlled clutch to provide both the responsiveness of a manual and the forget-about-it friendliness of an automatic. Sounds good, but in reality, we'd steer clear of this transmission, as its herky-jerky performance makes everyday driving a pain in the neck. Most BMW 6 Series from this time were equipped with the traditional automatic, but it didn't become standard until 2010. The manual became an option at that point.

BMW 6 SERIES

In reviews of this BMW 6 Series, we've found that the ride was supple and quiet, the brakes were powerful, and despite nearly 2 tons of weight, handling limits remained high thanks to aggressive tires and a well-balanced rear-drive chassis. However, the BMW 6 Series experience largely depended on how you chose to equip the car. Adding the Sport Package firmed up the ride and increased cornering grip via a set of 19-inch wheels and tires, while the variable-ratio active steering quickened low-speed turning response.
As with any luxury touring coupe or convertible, the specific mission of this BMW 6 Series was to cover lots of road in a hurry while making its occupants look and feel great -- the front ones, anyway. Unfortunately, the BMW 6 Series offered precious little of the rear seat space found in its contemporary 5 Series sedan counterpart despite similar midsize dimensions. The BMW 6 Series swoopier body lines were the reason for this, but even with the heightened focus on appearances, neither the 650i coupe nor the convertible could be considered the pinnacle of style.
Buyers of a used BMW 6 Series should note that beyond the powertrain changes, in-car electronics were also upgraded over the years. Early models feature older versions of BMW's iDrive system, which was still in its nascent stages and quite frustrating to use. Gradual improvements were made, but it wasn't until 2010 that the system became fully worthwhile.

Since its introduction for the 1978 model year, the BMW 7 Series luxury sedan has remained true to its original character. It's the BMW 7 Series flagship, and this full-size, rear-wheel-drive sedan has always represented the pinnacle of technology and luxury accoutrements in the German automaker's lineup. As such, it's an obvious choice for wealthy car buyers seeking a spacious and elegant sedan with a high level of curbside prestige.

There's a fair amount of competition even in this elite vehicle class, but the BMW 7 Series sedan's athletic handling dynamics have long set it apart, starting with the early 733s and carrying through to the five present-day BMW 7 Series models. While other manufacturers have been content to build high-end sedans with soft, serene rides, BMW 7 Series engineers its 7s to engage their drivers on an emotional level. There are a few recent contenders that have gone after this emotional engagement, but the BMW 7 Series remains a prime luxury sedan for people who like to drive.

BMW 7 Series

There are five models available. The BMW 7 Series 740i and long-wheelbase 740Li feature a twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-6 good for 315 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque. The BMW 7 Series 750i and 750Li feature a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 that produces 400 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque. BMW 7 Series six-speed automatic and rear-wheel drive are standard, and all-wheel drive (denoted with the moniker xDrive) is optional for the 750 models. The final model, the BMW 7 Series 760Li, features a 6.0-liter V12 that produces 535 hp and 550 lb-ft of torque. It is rear-drive only, and an eight-speed automatic is standard.
As BMW's flagship, the BMW 7 Series represents the pinnacle of the company's automotive know-how. It boasts a handsome, spacious interior and superior comfort, with supple leather and rich wood accents adorning almost every surface. Highly adjustable front seats ensure comfort for virtually every body type. The BMW 7 Series also showcases a wealth of high-tech luxury features such as a night-vision camera and sideview cameras. Some may still find the iDrive electronics interface system a bit complicated, but with use over time, we think the improved layout is an elegant solution to a button-heavy dashboard.
The 7 Series provides limolike interior room -- especially in Li form -- yet still remains a class benchmark for its handling prowess. The "Dynamic Driving Control" system contributes to this status, featuring four different settings that alter the driving characteristics of the car. It's complicated and we'd bet good money most folks will leave it on "Normal," but it should reward an owner who likes to customize his car to his own driving tastes.
There are many worthy choices in this illustrious car segment, but the BMW 7 Series is one of the most appealing.

BMW 7 Series

There have been five generztions of the BMW 7 Series. The current BMW 7 Series was completely redesigned for 2009. In that first year, it could only be had as the 750i and 750Li models with rear-wheel drive. Compared to the previous model, it is considered significantly more visually pleasing. The bodywork is tauter and the trunk lid has a slimmer look. The interior is also more traditional in design (the gear selector is now on the center console rather than the steering column) and the iDrive electronics interface is vastly improved versus past editions. The BMW 7 Series 760Li arrived for 2010, while the 740i debuted the following year, becoming the first six-cylinder-powered 7 Series in 20 years.
The previous-generation BMW 7 Series was produced from 2002-'08 and was by far the most radical version of the nameplate. Traditional exterior styling cues from the previous 25 years were largely abandoned in favor of a more aggressive, avant-garde design. The car was still recognizable as a BMW 7 Series, but many purists found the look abrasive. A refresh for 2006 smoothed out some of the harsher elements, but it's still a stretch to call this car beautiful, whether in standard-wheelbase BMW 7 Series 750i form or long-wheelbase 750Li and 760Li form (it was previously known as iL).
With the exception of 2002 when only a V8 was offered, the fourth-generation BMW 7 Series lineup always included sophisticated eight- and 12-cylinder engines paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. The 745i and 745Li sold from 2002-'05 were equipped with a 325-hp 4.4-liter V8, while the 750i and 750Li that succeeded them had a 360-hp 4.8-liter V8. The BMW 7 Series 750s were slightly heavier, so performance was about the same as for the 745s.
Offered continuously from 2003, the BMW 7 Series 760Li had a 6.0-liter V12 capable of 438 hp. Unlike the V8s, which are eager to rev, the V12 delivers a massive wave of thrust as soon as you nudge the accelerator pedal. BMW 7 Series offered a short-wheelbase 760i from 2004-'06.

BMW E36

The BMW E36 is the third generation of the 3 Series compact executive cars produced by BMW. It was introduced in late 1990 (as a 1991 model) for Europe and in late 1991 (as a 1992 model) for US and Canada. It was the successor to the E30 3 Series and was eventually replaced by the E46 3 Series in 1998, though BMW E36coupes were still produced for the 1999 model year. The E36 experienced enormous success in the market. It laid strong foundations for the success that the BMW E46 experienced in subsequent years.

Also known as the "dolphin shape", the BMW E36 was sold from 1991 through 1999. All BMW E36 saloons, coupes, and station wagons employed the "Z-axle" multilink suspension in the rear which had been proven in the Z1. The hatchback body style, known as the BMW E36/5 or BMW Compact, was identical to the regularBMW E36 from front bumper to A-pillar. In order to save space due to its truncated rear end, the Compact used a rear semi-trailing arm suspension based on the older E30 (also found in the Z3 and M Coupe), instead of the Z-AxleMultilink employed in all other BMW E36's.

In the United States, the four-door BMW E36 were on sale by fall 1991, while the E30 coupes were retained until well into 1992 when they were replaced by BMW E36 coupes. The BMW E36 convertible was delayed until 1994.The hatchback body style, known as the BMW Compact, was introduced in 1995 starting with the 318ti, being very popular in Europe but largely unsuccessful in North America. The "Touring" station wagon was sold in Europe from 1995, but was not available in the United States.

DOHC engines were used across the range (except in entry level models, see table below), with VANOS variable valve timing introduced in 1993. The 2.5 L M50B25 used in the 325i models was replaced in 1996 with the 2.8 L M52B28, creating the 328 line. Another 2.5 L I6 engine, the M52B25, was reintroduced for 1998 but badged as the 323i rather than 325i.

In 1994 agreements existed between Canada and several countries in Europe which allowed any car authorized in one participating country to legally be sold in any of the others.^{[citation needed]} Though BMW had unveiled the next generation BMW E36 M3 in Europe in 1992, the company felt that the production version would need to be priced much higher for export to North America than the market would allow. While the engineers worked on a less expensive North American version of the BMW E36 M3, BMW Canada seized the window of opportunity: 45 numbered European specification M3 coupes were specially produced and imported into Canada.

Even with a base price of BMW E36 $59,900 (a substantial sum for the day given that the standard equipment list did not include forged lightweight wheels, air conditioning, a sunroof or even metallic paint), all 45 cars were spoken for in 3 days. Unlike the other special versions of the BMW E36 M3, buyers were free to choose any colors and options they wanted on their cars. The cars all came equipped with the 286 PS (210 kW; 282 hp) 3.0 L inline 6 cylinder engine, vented brakes with floating rotors, glass headlights and other European standard equipment. They were initially delivered to Toronto, then shipped all across the country to the dealerships where they were ordered.

Canada would not see another BMW E36 M3 for sale until two years later, when BMW finally made the American versions of the 1997 M3 available for sale. Forty five Euro-Spec Canadian Edition cars were built, each one having a numbered engraved plaque in both the glovebox and the custom leather case which holds the owners manuals. Only the Australian M3-R was built in lower numbers.
