BNSF Railway Communities Matter

BNSF, headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, employs 40,000 people nationwide and moves more intermodal traffic than any other rail system in the world. It transports enough coal to generate more than 10% of the electricity produced in the nation. BNSF is also North America’s largest grain-hauling railroad and carrier of plastics, building and construction materials, and consumer goods.

THE INCREASED ADVANTAGES OF RAIL

BNSF Railway and other U.S. railroads continue to improve their fuel efficiency and are becoming an even more fuel-efficient (and environmentally-friendly) way to haul freight in this time of ever-changing gasoline and diesel prices. Trains now move a ton of freight an average of 436 miles on a single gallon of diesel fuel and they’ve increased their fuel efficiency by 80 percent over the past 25 years. A single intermodal train can take up to 280 trucks off highways (making room for 1,100 cars), improving air quality, saving energy and reducing congestion.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/BnsfRailwayCommunitiesMatter/~4/2bTrU4ExdNI" height="1" width="1"/>
