There really aren’t words that can capture how meaningful and beautiful this night was. Annie, Dan, their family and their amazing friends gathered together a few weeks ago for a spectacular private wedding and celebration on the beach in Kennebunk. We were truly honored to be there to capture it all! Malia and I had many, many connections with Annie and Dan, besides the fact that we are all Bowdoin grads. Their wedding was a celebration of all that is precious in life: the beauty of love, the bond of family, the laughter of friends and gratitude for a spectacular day in Maine. Brian and Kelly are everything we love in clients: smart, fun, funny, and unique. They planned an amazing celebration at The Mission Ranch in Carmel-By-The-Sea, California that was truly all their own. Their passion for travel, photography, adventure and food allowed them to create a one of kind wedding ceremony and reception that was a joy to document. Kelly looked absolutely incredible. Her dress was especially beautiful and she really wanted to make sure that I photographed the back of it before she went to see Brian for the first time “just in case” it got wrinkled. She’s a smart woman. It got more than wrinkled! (see below for the rest of the story…)

Remember Kelly’s idea to have me photograph the back of her dress? Well, during the wedding party group photo, the most adorable golden retriever came by and got wildly excited. He started doing laps around the group and all over Kelly’s wedding dress. Everyone took it in stride, and it made for a great story!

When Paige and Jason called us in 2015 and explained their amazing story, their thoughtful plans and all their hopes for their wedding day, we were truly honored to be their wedding photographers. It had taken well over a decade of knowing one another for Paige & Jason’s wedding day to even occur. The beauty of their story is that through the course of their “dating adventure” these two REALLY knew one another; they knew their families and friends and as such, their wedding day was truly a celebration of a love and friendship that had survived the years and just needed a proper sendoff to signify this next chapter in their lives. Wow. What a wedding. What an amazing group of people. Lauren & Nate are incredible in every way, and their friends/family were so thoughtful, so welcoming; we felt lucky to be there to document their wedding. What follows are just a few of the many, many images from their wedding by the sea in Newport, Rhode Island at OceanCliff.

People ask us all the time how and why we shoot weddings when we have such a busy commercial and editorial schedule with Wedge Creative. The truth is that weddings are inspiring stories to tell, especially when you get to witness the real love and companionship that can exist between two people. Nate and Lauren are extra special. Their bond is obvious, and what follows is just a small glimpse into all the emotion and joy that they felt on their wedding day. Enjoy!!

The OceanCliff is an amazing wedding venue for getting married in Newport. These images highlight one of the many reasons we love shooting here!

The wedding ceremony officiant was a close friend of the groom’s family.

The officiant managed to make a public service announcement about riding bikes AND leaving room on the road for cyclists. As a former bike racer, I thought it was the best wedding ceremony ever… though I am a bit biased.

Wow. Where to begin? Almost a year ago, I received an email from Allie explaining to me this incredibly thoughtful, detailed and romantic wedding he and his fiance Hadley were planning. His ideas involved a celebration weekend near Hadley’s family home in Northeast Harbor. They were pulling all sorts of elements into their wedding: art, color, tradition, sport, inside jokes and many non-traditional ideas in the hopes of creating something truly authentic and unique to what they love and value. It was an opportunity for Malia and I to fly to Maine and capture the love and connection of two people who really knew who they were, what they wanted and their hope was that we would document it all: the joy, laughter, tears and all the details that made this one weekend in Maine so special. Needless to say: we jumped at the chance to be there.

The wedding ceremony was held at St. Mary’s By-The-Sea in Northeast Harbor with a tented reception nearby at the Asticou Inn.

Clifton Dock is just down the street from Hadley’s family home… and the location where they were engaged.

Everything was different about this wedding: from the rings, to the flowers, to the “Wedding Olympiad”: their love and creativity touched it all.

Hadley is about as gorgeous and no-fuss as it comes. She literally spent less than a minute in front of a mirror the whole day.

Allie is a man after my own heart: he sees and appreciates the details in life.

We encouraged Hadley and Allie to do what felt right on their wedding day. Hadley and Allie’s wedding in Northeast Harbor, Maine was so special. Allie’s sister is an old friend and we were so happy to be able to travel to Mount Desert Island to support Hadley and Allie on their wedding day. Karen & Mac’s Stanford Memorial Church Wedding.

When Karen and Mac asked me to photograph their wedding at Stanford they mentioned that they were friends with Edie Barry, and from that moment forward I couldn’t say “yes, I’ll do it” fast enough. Edie is the mother of the bride from last year’s amazing Cavallo Point Wedding, and is one of the sweetest people we have ever met.

Karen and Mac’s Stanford wedding did not disappoint. Their wedding weekend was filled with everything we love: great people, great locations, amazing food and a 100% commitment to creating a celebration that was as fun as it was beautiful. I was truly honored to be there to document their story from their gourmet lip sync rehearsal dinner, to the ceremony at The Stanford Memorial Church and finishing with a warm and wonderful family style reception at Evvia in Palo Alto.

Clearlake California Wedding (Jamie & John)

Another amazing Northern California lake wedding this past weekend, this time in Clearlake, just a few hours north of San Francisco. I was lucky enough to be there with Jamie, John and their wonderful friends and family. Jamie grew up coming to Clearlake, and it only made sense that her wedding would be on Wildflower Point looking over the lake and mountains that surround it. When my friend Kate from Beautiful Days Events called me to say she had the perfect client, I certainly listened. Kate and I have worked together for years, and she knows us… she knows our laid back style, she knows we are obsessed with creating amazing photos, but we also like to work with clients who want to have fun on their wedding day. We aren’t uptight. Kate said the were “perfect” and in actuality, she couldn’t have been more accurate. From the moment I met Andy and Tory, I could tell that they had a deep love of family, and they had an even deeper love of laughing with/at their families. All was fair game, so long as people were having a good time. I knew right away that these were my people: they had a passion for beauty, for details, and they had made a lot of effort to create a truly spectacular wedding weekend. But what set these guys apart, was that they somehow let that all go when the big day finally arrived and they trusted their core group of professionals to just “make it happen!” As a result, we captured an amazing wedding day story of love and laughter that we will never forget.

The adventure began with the rehearsal dinner at the Webhannet Golf Club in Kennebunkport, Maine. There, I met the family and I quickly saw how deep the connections were between all of them. The toasts were amazing. Tears of joy and love, and just when you thought things couldn’t get any more emotional or someone couldn’t possibly express their love, respect and gratitude more… someone else stood up and shared. It was real and I was honored to capture it for the family.

When the wedding day arrived, we had overcast skies and a bit of rain. Classic Maine weather. I arrived at Tory’s family home and loved all the subtle, layers of details. I really wanted to capture that for them.

Many thanks to all the guests, family, friends who welcomed us with open arms for the weekend! It was amazing! Special thanks to Kate at Beautiful Days Events and Brittany, who played the role of our second photographer for the day. Thank you! So talented!

Today I was going to write a blog post to introduce our new website Boathouse Studios. Boathouse is our brand that is dedicated to family and love and everything that we do that goes along with that (wedding photography, kids/family/puppy portraits), but by sheer luck, the day that the website is ready, and the Facebook Page is finally live: I realize that TODAY, January 10th, 2015 is the 10 year anniversary since my sister was diagnosed with leukemia. A milestone like that makes me realize how lucky we have been to have had so many wonderful friends in the fight with us, and also, just how far we have come. So, today’s post is not going to be about branding and logo design, but today’s post is dedicated to my big sister Lea, and her amazing family, 10 years after the cancer diagnosis.

I took my sister’s family up to one of my favorite spots in Marin last month for an impromptu photo session. The location is somewhere up on the side of Mt. Tamalpais, where the mountain literally looms above the clouds and Pacific Ocean in Mill Valley, California. I first came to this location ten years ago, after my sister told me the news of her cancer diagnosis and I flew out from Maine to be with her. At the time, we thought her cancer may be a death sentence, and the original doctors essentially confirmed that with an “enjoy the years you have” sort of attitude. But look how far we’ve come! Lea tried many different treatments that didn’t work, and eventually moved to Seattle for the bone marrow transplant, that saved her life.

But life after transplant was hard. It was really hard actually, and I honestly don’t know how she did it all: hundreds of prescriptions, the daily hospital visits, the pain from bones that broke because of the toxic medications she was on, not to mention the destruction of her vision and skin. All I can say is that she suffered and always came up smiling. She is the toughest and most graceful person I have ever met. Adversity and cancer has never met someone quite like Lea Morrison.

Right by her side was her husband Billy, who not only acted as Lea’s primary caregiver, but also somehow managed to find the strength to start a thriving business. And as soon as the doctors said that it was safe and reasonable to do so, Lea & Billy adopted two amazing little babies: Henry & Kate. I have no idea how they ever manage to handle that amidst the doctor’s visits & hospitalizations! Becoming an uncle has been one of the greatest joys of my life.

But here they are! 10 years after diagnosis. 10 years and a few months since they were married in Sun Valley, Idaho. What a long, strange trip it has been, and I am grateful to have been here for all of it.

So today, I wanted to take a moment to be grateful for the support we have all received, and also just sit back and reflect on the amazing journey we’ve all survived. Little moments like watching a girl blow bubbles and a boy chase them in the wind take on greater meaning now. These are all moments we were never entitled to, never confident about… but full of gratitude now.

I would be lying if I said we all escaped unscathed: we all have our bumps and bruises from the journey, our emotional and physical scars and maybe even a few gray hairs because of the stress… but LOOK! Look at what these ten years have created! Look at these lives that have been touched and improved and appreciated! Some people never get the opportunities we have had: life saving medical treatment, the life saving generosity of a bone marrow donation from a total stranger, and most of all, the support from amazing friends and family along the way. I am grateful to have a sister like Lea who, despite some physical challenges still, is getting healthier and stronger each day. Thank you to everyone who made these ten years possible! -BGW

Though we’ve photographed hundreds of weddings around the world, few have been as fun as this wedding weekend. Take a Northern California girl and have her marry a Venezuelan guy at the edge of the sea overlooking The Golden Gate. The celebration they created was nothing short of spectacular. Their wedding had the best of all worlds: laid back Californian, combined with a sophisticated elegance and a whole lot of Venezuelan energy and fun. We couldn’t have asked for nicer families. Cavallo Point Lodge at The Golden Gate is a stunning location for a wedding reception. One of our favorite Bay Area wedding venues!

Family and friends. So important to everyone, so we had the double assignment to not only capture Daniel & Victoria’s story candidly and unobtrusively, but also to document all the those friends and family who mean the most to them. Mission accomplished!

We normally don’t overwhelm our clients with so many photos, but many, many guests wanted family/group photos together, so there are a lot of those scattered throughout your galleries… and don’t worry, we still captured all the candid emotion and fun that we’re famous for. We had a blast and appreciate all the energy and love you put into making this weekend one of a kind. Above is the simply elegant wedding cake with the vintage letter “L” signifying the family initial as a backdrop, and below, the Callippe Terrace outside the Callippe Ballroom in all it’s glory. We got lucky with a beautiful night that allowed the Golden Gate Bridge to really shine through.

Oh, yes… and we brought The Photobooth! Check back tomorrow for many (creative) self portraits by the guests.

I have been lucky enough to have photographed The Berkoff Boys almost every year since they were in diapers. Every few years, another child is added to the Berkoff family, and though it seems impossible at the time, the additional child just adds to the love, joy and craziness of this wonderful family. I love these kids! They are at once funny and sweet and nutty beyond words.

Our philosophy is that kids need to be photographed just acting like kids. These three boys epitomize that. For each and every gorgeous photograph I create of them loving one another, or sitting still for a moment, there are countless minutes of ninja/superhero skills that just have to be demonstrated. My point is that I am sort of on a crusade to get pro photographers and families to let kids be themselves and to have more fun. Photo sessions should be nothing short of awesome. I’m there to document their childhood, and running, jumping & acting crazy are all a wonderful part of the deal. Embrace it. Don’t try to stop it.

The photos above show their oldest in mid-ninja-superhero competition. Running like the wind and flying through the air were all part of that exercise I guess. By letting him do all of this, not only does he a.) have the coolest photos ever made of a kid running and jumping but b.) it released a little energy which then prompted a 100% spontaneous group hug with all his brothers. How awesome is that? Please note the sword in the group hug. That’s just how these boys roll. You never know when you may need your sword!

Photo above on the left shows the photos mum and dad probably wanted from me. Photo on the right was part of my process in getting that photo. For some reason they really wanted to make these faces… so, um, ok… do it! I was a kid too! Sometimes you need to get that out of your system!

Their youngest is awesome. Mellow and tough (you have to be when you’re the little brother of a superhero and a ninja) he just LOVES throwing rocks in the ocean. I think he could have stayed there all day. Had to document that for him!

What an awesome family. These guys are just so much fun.

The photo on the right is what I mean about documenting how amazing childhood can be. He is obsessed with superheroes, and while his brother was busy making his best ever ninja pose… this little guy blasted off and started flying right before my eyes. The photo shows that he is off the ground and traveling upward. The power of imagination in these kids is truly inspiring to me. By believing he could fly, he did… if just for a moment and I was so happy to be there to capture it for him!

Once we made all the “real” photographs, the boys got to go swimming in the icy Maine waters. Man, their parents are so nice.

The photo above shows an incredibly happy, albeit mildly hypothermic little boy. The photo below shows another spontaneous moment of brotherhood: hugging one another to get warm. Beautiful. These kids really, really love one another. It just shows.

The photo above shows the child known as The Playground Legend (he actually came over and snagged my cookie from me!!) and the photo below demonstrates just how intimidated these kids are by me and my photography technique. I think I need to make a self portrait with all the kids I photograph in the future. Being around these creative, imaginative, loving children is unbelievably inspiring to me. They are just brilliant in so many ways.

Dear World, please meet my new friend Jake. Thanks, Brian

Caitlin and Matt are Jake’s parents, and they graciously drove to Maine to connect with me during a busy series of shoots so I could meet and photograph their awesome little guy. I’ve gone on and on in the past about how our style of kid photography is to create experiences where that kids have the best time ever, but with Jake… I’ll come right out and say there was nothing that needed to be done. Jake sort of had the best time ever all on his own. Jake is mellow and fun and just the sweetest little kid.

Bowdoin College alums may recognize Caitlin, who is a fellow Polar Bear, as well as the Bowdoin Quad, which we used as our location for the shoot.

At Jake’s age, he’s not walking yet but that just means that he finds great joy in the simplest things: being held by mum & dad, being turned upside down, and most importantly… being tossed in the air! He really was so wonderful the entire time.

Oh yeah! And being helped along while walking the quad also brought a big smile to Jake’s face too!

We know Caitlin and Matt are raising Jake properly because he’s already loving his Red Sox kit. Proper New England parenting right there. Well done.

Everyone should be so full of joy.

No photo shoot of mine would be complete without including the puppies! This is Desi and Lucy. They weren’t with us long, but it was fun while it lasted.

It was really wonderful to spend time with Jake, Matt and Caitlin. I had been in the middle of a marathon of travel and shooting, so it was refreshing to stop and document these simple joys of life. Seeing a Jake’s eyes light up because he just picked a blade of grass or because his dad and mum held him close… that’s the important stuff in life, and I was honored to capture it for them. We have been looking forward to photographing Meg & Frank Hwang’s family for months. You may recognize them from the family photo shoot did for them a few years ago that was featured on our blog here. They are awesome, and their kids Ryder and Callen (AKA “The Bean”) are high energy and so much fun to photograph. Much more than clients, these guys are our friends from Bowdoin College and they’re also our off hours marketing and veterinarian help/advice gurus (Meg is a Vet and Frank is a marketing genius with Timberland). We are so appreciative to have them in our lives, and very grateful to them and our many other clients who have enthusiastically supported us as we opened additional studios in San Francisco and in Hawaii. Like so many of our loyal clients, they’ve patiently worked with our crazy travel schedule to coordinate a time when we were in their area and had a few hours to snap some very special pics for them. Well, the stars aligned and we finally connected a few weeks ago in Rye, New Hampshire. It was one of those shoots where I walked away feeling incredibly lucky to do the work that I do, and more than a little bummed to have to leave them so quickly. So, here we go: my story of photographing the one-of-a-kind Hwang family!

I’ve said this a million times at this point, but kids need a chance to relax and have fun on a photo shoot. They have awesome energy and my objective is to document them just being kids and especially them having fun. The above photos are of Callen, (henceforth known as The Bean). When I arrived she was using her family’s sofa as a trampoline and rather than trying to contain all that energy we just went with it. We snagged a few sweet photos of her jumping like a maniac as well as a few real and and relaxed moments as soon as she burned off a little of that energy.

We all piled in to the car and headed off to the local beach to photograph a specific shot we had planned for their family holiday card. The kids were all perfectly clean, the light was great and everything was looking good for creating the most gorgeous family photo ever. As we walked over to our location for the shot, their son Ryder made a beeline for a giant sandy puddle. He must be part Labrador Retriever puppy because a.) he sort of runs sideways while still running forward and b.) he was knee deep, splashing in the puddle within seconds. He was having THE BEST DAY EVER.

So, this is what a kid looks like who is just totally happy. His nice clean clothes were totally sandy and soaked but that made no difference at all. Ryder had a wet rock and was so stoked about it! He just couldn’t stop running around, jumping in puddles and doing drive-bys past me to show me his awesome rock! The world needs more of this kind of joy.

Predictably, the Hwangs rolled with the punches. While some families would be freaking out that their perfect outfits got trashed, or their perfect plans got changed… the Hwangs saw their kid having a blast and just let me photograph him. So cool. They just scooped him up for a few seconds as he ran past for a couple quick photos. Effortless really, and so fun to see how happy the beach makes him.

Not to be outdone, The Bean took to the air and water to jump and run like a mad woman. I think she’s ready for us to put her in The Athleta catalog!

Soaked pants, bloody lip (from trying to launch himself off the lifeguard stand), sand in his eyes… and he keeps smiling. Ryder is awesome.

Best photo I’ve ever made in my life. Look no further. It will never be better than Callen spontaneously giving me The Shaka while standing on a Lifeguard chair. Malia, my Hawaiian wife beamed with island pride when she saw this. Whatever Meg and Frank are doing as parents, clearly, it is working.

This is an athletic family. They’re not going to sit/stand/walk calmly too long. You have to be quick and versatile, but by keeping the energy high, we capture moments like these.

And then, out of nowhere Callen brings me a flower. So sweet. Thank you Bean!

So there you go. The kids run around for an hour like maniacs and then there’s a window where they’re relaxed and chill… and images like the one on the right can be made. Brother and sister sitting on a rock together laughing. Perfect!

I get asked ALL THE TIME “How do you get the kids to stand still, smile, look at the camera AND actually look happy for a photograph?” ANSWER: 99% of the time I encourage the kids to be kids. Above right, Callen is dancing for me and I’m encouraging her not stopping her. Above left is the photo I made between dance sessions. you just have to anticipate and take advantage of those moments when they are there.

Same thing going on here: kids get to be kids, and there are moments where they’re happy and relaxed and secretly plotting their next move. Photo shoots are supposed to be fun!

The sun was setting and Callen decided to try her hand at parkour. Some very cute moments as Frank helped her get past some of the obstacles.

Ok, so after our “real” photo shoot (and after the sun went down), Frank and Callen decided to cruise over to the beach for an impromptu surf session. We photograph pro surfers for a living, so I was of course stoked to see Callen dive into the waves, but I was also sort of stressing out because the sun had already gone down and we needed to deploy some insane low light combat photography techniques to make anything come out. No matter how good we are, we need light to photograph action, so with that longwinded disclaimer about why these images aren’t perfect: here is The Bean shredding Cable Beach. (FYI DEFINITION: “Grom” = A young surfer. Shortened version of the word “Grommet”)

The only thing better than making awesome photographs for a client is the opportunity to return again and again to continue documenting their story. It’s a huge honor when we get an assignment because it means people trust us, and it’s an even bigger honor when they ask us to return. It feels like just yesterday that we photographed Katie & Nick’s wedding at Bowdoin College, but as evidenced by the size of their growing family… time has flown by and now their three kids are old enough for us to return to capture a bit of their childhood.

And forgive me if the opening photograph made you think that they have only three children, because they don’t. Their oldest, and their best behaved is Austin “the perfect dog”, so let me do a little Brady Bunch montage here and give him his 15 minutes of fame. Lord knows he deserves it, after being pushed to the side by the twins and the youngest. Such a good boy.

Our approach to photographing kids is very different than most. I really believe that if everyone isn’t comfortable and relaxed then the photography will never work. Kids need time to warm up and be happy right? I remembered being tortured as a kid (and as an adult) into family photographs that were inauthentic and not really me. As a result, I’m truly committed to documenting kids as they are… without the confines of scripts and control. Capturing kids that way takes a little time & charm, but the photos are a genuine window into their personality and their lives. Luckily, the Livesay family was on board with that concept and though thunderstorms scrapped our original plans, we met at their family’s farm to run around and play. Spoiler Alert: I had an awesome time. I would seriously go back and hang out with these kids.

Remember that bit I just said about my philosophy that kids “need to warm up”? Yeah. Not these kids. Granted I had met them before, but they arrived ready to party. I mean, it was sort of incredible. They were in their boots because of the rain the night before and were unloading their car and promptly attacking me within minutes. Did you know that a bubble wand could be used as a tomahawk? No? How about as a sword? No? Well, you haven’t hung around with Ryan Livesay then. I secretly wanted to put my cameras down and have bubble fights with them… but of course I wasn’t being paid to duel with their son. Damn. Need to work that into the contract for next time.

After I survived my near execution by bubble wand, I set my sights on their youngest child Keira, who, very intelligently remained suspicious of my every move. It wouldn’t take long before this child felt comfortable enough to attack me as well, though thankfully the motor skills were a bit less developed still.

Bikes are awesome. I should just leave it at that. Lauren was adorable though, she just scooted around on her bike and then would stop and take it all in and occasionally call out some necessary instructions to the rest of the family. She’s already got life figured out!

Keira the baby. Such a sweet kid. Mellow but playful. Wow.

Lauren on her way to open up the old chicken coops for me. In case you’re ever visiting the Livesay Farm, be sure to have Lauren give you the tour. She’s a fantastic tour guide and be sure to ask to see where the lawn mower is stored. She’s very enthusiastic about that spot for some reason!

Brothers and sisters have a special bond. It was beautiful to see how much these two enjoyed being together.

I like people who have a ski lift chair from a famed mountain on their property, and therefore The Livesays are ok by me. I had to plop the kids on the chair for one photo.

My favorite part of the morning was when Lauren showed me the garden and came back with a cherry tomato. She was very sweet and gave it to me as a gift. Regardless of the fact that it was 7:30am and I was carrying 30 pounds of camera gear, I WOULD be eating that tomato immediately she told me. I’m no fool: I ate it right away and it was wonderful. Thank you again Lauren.
