When striving towards a goal there are mileposts by which to measure progress. Crossing the Atlantic in a sailboat requires two types of mileposts. The first is tactical in the form of specific latitude and longitude way points. These are used to plot a course to a specific location to take advantage or current, weather, or simply the shortest distance between start and finish. The other type is the psychological or feel-good mileposts. Our first feel good milepost was reached recently. We are now east of Bermuda. I think it held so much significance due to our starting out so far south. Bermuda has been visible on the chart plotter since Ft. Lauderdale. Now that little spot of islands will fade into the distance and off the plotter. Other key feel good milestones will be the halfway point and the first sight of land. Good sailing today. A cold front passed today that cleared away the fog and clouds and provided 15 knots from the NE. We are moving south again to avoid some stronger weather north. It has been really good to have Herb Hilgenberg on the radio to assist with our weather routing.

During the 2010 Spring Series I shot this brief video of the GPS laying procedure and the ‘easy option’ recovery — it was filmed during a ‘quiet moment’, so you see it exactly as it was. Speaking over wind and engine noise, my voice-over is a bit monotone, for which I apologise… I was director, cameraman and narrator – and I was trying to drive the boat with the other hand…! We did two takes of the pickup, but time was pressing and the laying process was filmed in one take, so I’m not too unhappy with the result. All comments welcome. Tony M

PHUKET: The Turanor, the first solar-powered boat to attempt a circumnavigation of the globe, is scheduled to moor at Phuket’s Ao Po Marina, on Phuket’s east coast, at about 7:30am tomorrow. The stunning piece of technology and craftmanship, will remain in Phuket until Wednesday and will be visited by a delegation from the Swiss embassy in Thailand on Tuesday. The voyage began 389 days ago — on September 27, 2010 — from Monaco and has been mapped with stopovers along the equator, where the boat can exploit the maximum amount of sunlight as it rounds the Earth. The four-man crew crossed the Atlantic Ocean, navigated the Panama Canal, then sailed the Pacific Ocean and are now heading for the Indian Ocean and the Suez Canal, en route to the Mediterranean to complete 57000km of ocean traveling. Dubbed in full the MS Turanor PlanetSolar, the multihull is topped by a large array of photovoltaic solar panels that at full exposure cover an area of 537 square meters. At 31 meters long, 15m wide, reaching a height of 6.1m. and weighing in at 95 tonnes, it is the biggest solar boat ever built, taking 14 months to complete at the Knierim Yacht Club, in Kiel, Germany. The PlanetSolar project began in 2004 with the idea of promoting and investigating sustainable energy sources through future technologies. During one of the hotter parts of the fastest ever circumnavigation of the world by bicycle, Vin Cox shares the sights, history, and challenges of the day. This was approximately day 106 of a journey lasting 163 days 6 hours 58 minutes as recognised by the Guinness Book of Records. He cycled 18225.7 miles (that’s nearly 30000 kilometres)! Vin is now giving talks/lectures/speeches about his adventure and organising a new event “The Global Bicycle Race”. The race will encourage people like Vin to all set off around the world at the same time from the same place to let the public share and compare their adventures: start date is Feb 18th 2012 in London, England.

Sailing my Olson in a long distance race. I just installed a homemade Gimbal to give us an even horizon. Works nice going up wind, but downwind, I think it swings too much…what do you think? Also compare it to the Frostbite video and let me know if you prefer to have the gimbal or not…
