Reggae Month celebrations to hit high note

The organisers of Reggae Month are pushing to make the 2010 event its best yet. Several live events are planned as well as the launch of a Walk of Fame at Emancipation Park in New Kingston.
Reggae Month is observed during February, but its third staging officially gets under way on January 31 with a reception at Jamaica
House, hosted by Prime Minister Bruce Golding.
Charles Campbell, chairman of the Reggae Month committee and a director at the Jamaica Reggae Industry Association (JARIA), says maximum effort is being made to lift its profile.
"From a personal perspective, it is a bit too low-key. What we intend to do is broaden the programme," Campbell said.
That "broadening" will include establishing a Walk of Fame at Emancipation Park, a popular spot in New Kingston for joggers and weddings
Campbell says his committee is currently discussing induction placement with the National Housing Trust, owners of Emancipation Park.

“No Woman, No Cry” Songwriter Vincent Ford Dies

Vincent Ford, the man credited with writing Bob Marley’s classic “No Woman, No Cry,” passed away in Jamaica on December 28.

According to Intrepid reporter Brittany Somerset, the songwriter’s death comes after a long struggle with diabetes. Both of Ford’s legs had been amputated due to complications from the disease. Ford became good friends with Bob Marley as the two grew up in the Trench Town ghetto of Kingston, Jamaica in the 1960s. The song “No Woman, No Cry” first appeared on Bob Marley’s 1974 album Natty Dread. The most well known version of the track remains the concert version off the 1975 album Live!. The song later gained even more international fame with its inclusion on the greatest hits compilation Legend (1984), now recognized as the best selling reggae album of all time. Although Vincent Ford is officially credited as the sole songwriter of the seminal hit, rumors persist that Marley added Ford’s name to ensure his friend would have royalties for the rest of his life. Despite the whisperings, Ford went on to write three more songs for Marley’s breakthrough album Rastaman Vibration: “Positive Vibration,” “Roots, Rock, Reggae,” and “Crazy Baldhead. After Marley succumbed to cancer in 1981, Ford ran a soup kitchen in his native Jamaica and made no further forays into songwriting. “No Woman, No Cry” continues to be a popular cover song.

Country star Chesney enlists Marley's band for latest single

Having sold out arenas all over the United States and released platinum-selling albums for nearly a decade, singer/songwriter Kenny Chesney is indisputably one of the biggest crossover successes in modern country music. His forthcoming album, Lucky Old Sun is shaping up to be another chart-topper, based on its end-of-summer hit single and video "Everybody Wants to Go to Heaven."

Despite Chesney's easygoing vocals and the song's twangy guitars, "Everybody Wants to Go to Heaven" is an oddity on modern country radio. The song's skanking rhythm, steel drum percussion and piping organ give it a distinct Caribbean flavor that is all but unheard of in popular country music. The song's reggae leanings are unexpectedly realistic for a Nashville-based crooner like Chesney. This can be attributed to Chesney's employment of the most famous backup band in reggae history, Bob Marley's Wailers, to give the song an authentic reggae tinge.

Nearly three decades after Bob Marley's passing, the Wailers are still an internationally popular concert act that releases new albums from time to time. Besides Marley, the band also launched the careers of reggae icons like Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer and Aston "Family Man" Barrett, the latter of whom performs and records with the Wailers to this day with the stage energy that took the band to the forefront of world music in the 1970s.

Unlike many backup bands for iconic singer/songwriters, the Wailers played a major role in Bob Marley's success, providing tight harmonies and melodic rhythms to Marley's songs. The band's indisputable musicianship and stage energy earned them a devoted fanbase that has carried on to this day, and it is a fanbase that Chesney is proud to be a part of.

"They were so generous with us in terms of their time and the stories they'd tell us," Chesney told country music news source GACTV.com. "We sat up one night on the beach, and they shared the whole history of the band, the struggles they had. I got to interview them for something we may do later. Those guys are a huge part of history, whether people realize it or not. The music they had a hand in creating is so universal. It doesn't matter where you go, you can hear the Wailers drifting out of some club or shop or car or boat, and they are so humble for everything they've been a part of."

Based around a quote often attributed to legendary boxer Joe Louis, the song has an instant chorus ("Everybody wants to go to Heaven/But nobody wants to go now") that begs to be sung on beaches and around campfires. The accompanying video, filmed in Jamaica, features footage of Chesney performing with the Wailers, along with some beautiful shots of the island and glimpses into the lives of its residents. We're revisiting Bob Marley's fantastic career with exclusive video from the September 1980 rehearsal session at Miami's Criteria Studio. This session catches Bob and the Wailers as they rehearse at Criteria before the second leg of the 'Uprising' tour that began in Boston on September 16, 1980. The band had just come off a huge success in the first part of the tour, which started in late May in Europe. They played for over a million people, with the biggest show occurring in Milan, Italy, where they played to over 100,000.

The North American leg of the tour was designed to finally break Bob and the Wailers to black audiences in America. Bob's music was getting massive amounts of air play on black radio stations with the hit, "Could You Be Loved," and the Wailers were capitalizing on that popularity by playing with the Commodores in New York City. They were also scheduled to go on tour with Stevie Wonder in the middle of November, but that, of course, never happened.

The Wailers were on a break in between tours in support of 'Uprising' and had just purchased a video camera for the first time. Neville Garrick, Bob's art director and lighting man, was in charge of recording the rehearsals. Check back for more clips from this famous session at BobMarley.com.

One of the signature elements of Bob Marley's music was his startling ability to take an otherwise bouncy, enticing reggae rhythm and inject such powerful lyrics that the listener could feel happy, sad, serious and even scared, all within the confines of a three-minute song structure.

He did it throughout his career, and perhaps never more effectively on Uprising. "We and Dem" is the fourth track from that album, and at a tight 3 minutes and 14 seconds, it's not very long. But the slowed-down reggae tempo, minor keys and somewhat dirge-like quality of Bob's voice tells you right away that the song has a dark side.

The reggae star, who's been touring in support of his hit debut solo album, Mind Control, has been announced as one of the performers at the San Francisco version of the April 22 nation-wide Green Apple Music and Arts Festival, which will feature 200 performances in 60 premier venues. The concerts, which will also take place over the weekend in New York and Chicago, are being staged to call awareness to environmental issues.

Earth Day in San Francisco will bring music to a historic stage - the Speedway Meadow in Golden Gate Park - and will also feature Bob Weir and Ratdog, the Greyboy Allstars, Martin Sexton and Jonah Smith.

Stephen and his band, which also features his brother, Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley, are expected to perform around 2 p.m., a perfect preview to their sold-out show at the storied Fillmore Auditorium in the city by the Bay that night.

The Green Apple Music and Arts Festival, the nation's largest celebration of Earth Day, is committed to raising environmental awareness by combining live musical performances from diverse genres with educational outreach and cultural events suitable for all audiences.
