]]> Last week, I recorded a media podcast about the current state of quantum computing. I’ll post a link to it when it is available, but today I’m discussing something that we chatted about in the prep that did not make it into the final conversation.

Is it time for people to stop being so amazed by quantum?

It’s the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ), so we have a great reason to learn more about the technology and its potential applications. These include computing, networking, communications, and sensing. This year is our joint opportunity to explain the key characteristics of quantum mechanics in a simplified manner and explore how it is starting to translate into new applications in our everyday lives. Of course, the universe and you and I are applications of quantum mechanics, so it’s not an entirely novel idea.

Will the IYQ amazement end in December? In 2026, will we say “been there, done that” regarding quantum, at least in terms of highlighting it so much?

Perhaps a bit of exhaustion will creep in, but we will merely be one year further into the evolution of quantum tech. We will continue to have the conferences and events, as the field is still evolving, and they must address that maturation to wider and wider audiences. They must change their agendas, as must the media stories.

Consider my Apple iPhone. I don’t care too much about the hardware beyond it providing a good camera and screen, performance, storage capacity, and the ability to connect via wifi and cellular communications. Do I care about transistors? No. All the features with which I am concerned are made useful by software. (Note I said “useful” and not “provide utility.”) It’s the apps.

The phone hardware is capable enough to support the software well, something we can’t say about quantum computers today. So, instead, we talk about arcane topics like qubit counts and modalities, programming paradigms, fidelities, and error correction codes. This choice of public discussion topics will eventually change. As an industry, we should stop being amazed by all this granular technical detail and spend much more time exploring two or three levels deeper for potential practical use cases. Tell me more about the software and the infrastructure that supports it.

It is in this sense that I raised the original question about reducing amazement. You can certainly be excited about practical uses, but the quantum clichés and misconceptions spoken with wide starry eyes are passé. No more “0 and 1 at the same time,” friends.

Instead, I want to hear about real potential applications for quantum and the requirements of the software and hardware to deliver them. I should correct myself: they are “applications for computation,” not simply for “quantum.” That’s because industrial and commercial use cases already entail many different kinds of classical processors and data movement. You know this: people talk all the time about their hybrid CPU-GPU algorithms. Actually, they don’t, but many favor such hybridization when quantum is involved.

Amaze me with your research from the top down on how quantum will eventually be a necessary component to a specific healthcare, pharmaceutical, chemical, materials science, or optimization problem.

There’s an old saying that when all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. Stop giving me “hammer” arguments for NISQ hardware, software, and algorithms. Practically explain why your work will survive into the fault-tolerant era and scale to the ultra-large problems classical computing can’t do alone. Tell me the domain-specific experts in the industry with whom you are working. You support them. Give frequent updates.

I am by no means saying that innovation and investment in quantum should stop, far from it. Focus on the practical goals and what is involved to get you (and us) there. Couch your technical details in that context, not in what a great and improved hammer you’ve made.

To quote Paul McCartney from his first solo album in 1970, I hope soon to say, “maybe I’m amazed” about all the real non-hyped progress you are making on what quantum can do, not how it’s built.

What Happened?

On , Rigetti Computing announced its financial results for the Q2 2025 quarter ending June 30, 2025. See its press release for the full details.

TL;DR

  • In what is becoming a familiar pattern, the earnings reports of small public quantum computing companies are characterized by lackluster earnings, a lot of assets due to earlier stock appreciation and speculation followed by company at-the-market stock sales, and net income/loss and earnings per share that vary from quarter to quarter due to outstanding or resolved derivative warrant liabilities.
  • Revenue was up a bit from the last quarter but down over 40% year-to-year. Whatever else is going on per the company’s accomplishment announcements, it is not translating to significant and sustained sales growth.
  • Having a large bank account is nice, of course, and will allow a company to stay in business for the foreseeable future, but this must translate to sales of competitive quantum computing systems.

The Numbers

The revenue situation will become clear in the next section, but what troubles us is the significant drop in R&D expenses. Yes, this reduced operating expenses, but reducing R&D can damage your future commercial prospects. Rigetti has increased its R&D over the last four quarters, so we will see in the next quarter if this is a one-time aberration.

In our opinion, Rigetti has done a good job historically at controlling its operating expenses. Although they and R&D were down in Q2, they are now back near their values at the end of 2024.

Given the size of the assets, Rigetti can and should, in our opinion, start making some bold moves to shore up revenue and diversify. Will they follow the path of IonQ and start acquiring?

Additional Thoughts

Rigetti introduced its 4-chip Cepheus-1-36Q thirty-six qubit system this quarter. While we’re all for networking small quantum processing units to make bigger ones, at 9 qubits, these chips are tiny. Yes, they have the 84-Qubit Ankaa™-3 System single-chip system, but this falls far short of what Google and especially IBM are doing with their devices.

We’ve been trying to come up with creative names for these 9-qubit quantum chiplets. Quiplets? Qublets? We acknowledge that Rigetti is currently developing the networking engineering for connecting multiple chips. We need to see, however, fidelities for qubit-to-qubit gates within the chips and across chips. A big table of all qubit-to-qubit CX or CZ fidelities would do nicely.

In its earnings press release, Rigetti said:

Rigetti expects to release its 100+ qubit chiplet-based system at 99.5% median two-qubit gate fidelity before the end of 2025.

In a company post, “The Rigetti 128-qubit chip and what it means for quantum,” on August 8, 2018, then CEO Chad Rigetti stated:

The Charts

Revenue was up after two quarters of decline, but with the recent closed acquisitions, it’s not clear how comparable the current figure is to past quantum computing revenue. The point of the acquisitions, in our opinion, is to diversify the company and gain more near-term revenue streams until quantum computing becomes practical. There are only so many small systems that can be sold for research and education purposes, and the goal of achieving Practical Quantum Advantage is several years away. The Oxford Ionics acquisition is not closed yet, so it is not contributing to the total. In any case, it would be a relatively small addition.

Operating expenses increased more than twice, and R&D was up 2.5 times. Again, the recent acquisitions affect these values. For us, the interesting future expenditures will be for R&D once Oxford Ionics is fully integrated. That is their technological future for quantum computing. If they can’t innovate and scale with that, they will not be a player among the competitors who have already broken the 100 and 1,000 physical qubit modalities. As proud as it is of its ion trap technology, it must compare itself against the superconducting and neutral atom qubit vendors. Quantinuum is IonQ’s number one competitor in trapped ions. That company has demonstrated high-quality qubits, but it still needs to prove it can achieve the hockey stick scaling outlined in its latest roadmap.

IonQ has leveraged investor enthusiasm to amass a substantial cash reserve by selling stock at the market. Let’s see how it translates this into revenue and industry-leading products. If they can’t have such an impact within the next year, investors may sour on the chance for a much larger long-term return. Of course, quantum stocks are a favorite of day traders these days, so we must focus on the fundamentals and how they support the stock price and company valuation.

His technical knowledge and recent experience in the financial industry will be a boon for the company. What Happened?

On , D-Wave Quantum announced its financial results for the Q2 2025 quarter ending June 30, 2025. See its press release for the full details.

TL;DR

  • After a surprisingly strong Q1, revenue fell back to earth, dropping over 79% since last quarter. Yes, it was up almost 42% year-over-year, but 42% of a small number is still a small number, especially for a company founded 26 years ago.
  • Like their main public small quantum competitors, Rigetti Computing and IonQ, D-Wave sold stock on the market, increasing its total assets above $800 M. Great to have all that cash, but it must lead to real revenue.
  • Unlike IonQ, there have been no major senior leadership changes in the company.

The Charts

Except last quarter, D-Wave’s revenue has been between $2M and $3M for the previous 8 quarters. They surpassed the upper number this quarter, but just barely, and Q1 looks like a fluke rather than a trend.


Operating expenses increased, in part, because of personnel costs and non-cash stock-based compensation. Does this establish a new base for the quarterly expenses? R&D increased, which is essential in a competitive market, mainly when virtually everyone else in the “quantum” and “computing” industry uses a different technology.


D-Wave must prove every day why it is better than its ~84 hardware competitors. This is not apparent from revenue, but there are clearly stock market investors who see long-term financial value and helped raise the company’s cash asset position.


Additional Thoughts

There are many reasons why people invest in a company. Some may be purely financial, to get a good return. Perhaps the company’s work will lead to solutions important to industry and society, and those appeal to investors. As you consider announcements and earnings reports, make sure you separate the financial status of a company as an investment from the fundamental question of whether its technology will succeed and is better than competitive offerings. Stock price does not imply a great technology, nor does great technology ensure that it will be a winner among users. Insert your usual saying about VHS and Betamax.

Today’s Brief Commentary

It’s early August as I write this, and I’ve mostly been trying to take a few days off from my computer. Since Saturday, my brother-in-law and I have been replacing a wooden porch floor, and we’re almost done. There are always surprises when you do anything to an old house, but we didn’t find anything too bad. There are a few more odds and ends for which I need materials, but I should wrap up the work by the end of next week.

When I have ventured toward my desktop, it was to finish up the work on the quantum news aggregator I built. To be clear, I coded this for myself because I was tired of looking here, there, and everywhere for the latest news. I’ve provided information below on how you can get the output of this either daily or as a frequently updated collection of recent press releases, news, announcements, and newsletters from the last 10 days. I hope that by publishing these, you can either read the commentary and explore the small curated list of links in this newsletter or gain a broader view of what people are announcing in the aggregated listings. Or do both!

A few observations:

  • More of you should provide RSS feeds for your news and blogs (yes, I’ve said that before).
  • Many of your pretty websites look good, but have horrible non-semantically structured HTML underneath. You need to have a good talk with your designer next time you redo things. I saw one site where the browser display was about two screens worth, but the HTML was 35,000 lines long.
  • I favor press releases and blog entries from companies and organizations themselves on their websites, though the wire services are fine.
  • If you don’t have a reason to issue a press release, write a blog post at least once a month.
  • If you don’t have a reason to issue a press release, don’t issue a content-light, fabricated release. They are obvious.
  • I’ll occasionally make you aware of the aggregated news, but that’s it on the creation of the listings.

Today’s thought: I’ve been thinking a lot about the increasing number of announced partnerships and sovereign quantum efforts. More on those next week.

Today’s Brief Commentary

It’s been a very solid week of progress here in the Terran Quantum Realm, um, I mean, the global quantum industry. More than just technological progress, we have partnerships, realistic forecasts for useful quantum applications, and in-country collaborations.

I’ve been seeing the phrase “real-world use cases” more and more. At first, I thought the expression was a little hypy, but then I corrected myself. I think people are growing tired of marketing copy that confuses what is currently true and what vendors hope will happen. I also believe people want to understand how much hardware progress is necessary to make the applications practical for production use. I really don’t want to hear, for the thousandth time, what the potential applications are unless there is a detailed quantitative analysis of what it will take to get us there.

So, “real-world” means that industry experts are collaborating with quantum computing researchers to develop the prototype applications. The industry wants quantum and whatever else it needs to solve its problems. This is not “hybrid”, it is “computing.” (Okay, that’s my Q3 2025 statement on that.)

Many quantum software application companies are actually quantum consultants, and that is good. We need more of those expert interactions. Ensure that your contracts are very clear on intellectual property ownership, lest you find out later that you do not have the freedom of action to commercialize your technology.
