Intellectual property and copyright are key concerns for today’s researchers. This WISER session next week will be raising your awareness of issues to look out for, both in using other people’s work and in publishing your own work.

Key topics will include:

What is copyright and how does it affect you as a researcher?
Using other people’s work for your own publications and research, and for teaching from a range of formats
Publishing your own work – including protecting your copyright, what to look out for in your contract with your publisher, open access publishing and re-use licences

Monographs and Open Access – join the HEFCE debate

An opportunity for Oxford academics and researchers to debate the issues around scholarly monographs and open access with publishers and funders, and feed into HEFCE’s Expert Reference Group project.

Key resources for Philosophy and Theology

The Philosophy and Theology Faculties Library will be running workshops in week 7 for undergraduates and others preparing to work on a thesis or extended essay.

The first WISER Information Skills in Theology will take place on Wednesday 11 June 14.00-15.30 and will focus on search skills, bibliographic databases for philosophy and religion and primary theological texts and tools for biblical studies. Please book your place online.

The second workshop, WISER: Information Skills in Philosophy will take place on Friday 13 June 14.00-15.30 and will cover bibliographical databases for Philosophy, primary texts and encyclopedias of philosophy. Please book your place online.

These courses are primarily designed for undergraduates. However, postgraduates and researchers who would like a refresher are also welcome to attend.

Both sessions will take place at IT Services, 13 Banbury Road.

RefWorks for Sciences and Social Sciences

We are running another introduction to RefWorks, this time with a focus on Sciences and Social Sciences.

RefWorks is a well-established online tool which allows you to manage your citations/references, insert them into your work as footnotes or intext citations, automatically generate bibliographies and easily switch between citation styles.

Come along to our session on Wed 4 June 2.00 – 5.00, where we will introduce the main features of RefWorks including:

signing up for RefWorks
adding references to RefWorks from a range of databases and online resources
inserting references into Word documents
formatting (and reformatting) references using citation styles
creating bibliographies

…and plenty of hands-on practice!

The workshop is open to anyone looking for an introduction to RefWorks but the section on importing references will focus on Science/Social Science examples.

Measuring Research Impact

Want to calculate your h-index or find the most highly cited journals? Come along to our WISER workshop: Research Impact – citation analysis tools, on Wed 4 June 11.00 – 12.00.

We give an introduction to citation tracking and bibliometrics, using a range of ‘impact factor’ tools to find top journals and conferences, count citations and measure the impact of publications and researchers. We explain their strengths and weaknesses, and how to access them. We cover: Journal Citation Reports, SCImago Journal Rank, Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar, Essential Science Indicators, ORCID, and more.

Reference Management: RefWorks and Mendeley

If you missed last term’s sessions on RefWorks and Mendeley, come along to our workshops next week:

RefWorks for Humanities, Wed 28 May 9.15 – 12.15

This session will introduce the main features of RefWorks including:

adding references to RefWorks from a range of databases and online resources
inserting references into Word documents
formatting (and reformatting) references using citation styles
creating bibliographies

…and plenty of hands-on practice!

There is a Humanities bias to the session in the examples used in the demonstration, but it is open to all postgraduates, researchers, academics and undergraduates wishing to use reference management software.

Mendeley for Reference Management, Tue 27 May 9.15 – 12.15

Mendeley is growing in popularity as a relatively new reference management tool, able to do all the things of a traditional reference management package (such as building up a library of references and inserting references into word processed documents), but with the addition of many social and collaborative features for researchers.
