Tell us a little bit about your childhood. What was it like growing up in your household and can you describe the moment you knew you wanted to pursue a career in the arts? 

My childhood was one of close family ties and culture shock! I was born in Ghana but live in the UK from infancy until I was almost 10 years old. Moving back to Ghana after growing up in the UK was definitely an adjustment. Leaving all of my childhood experiences behind in the UK and moving to Ghana meant I had to quickly adapt to a ‘new’ environment and a new way of life. But my awkwardness soon morphed into a deep appreciation for my homeland. Although I had an affinity for the arts, I never thought I would pursue a career as a musician.

Did you always want to start your own business? And if not, what led you to take the entrepreneurial route?

I actually wanted to become a lawyer! I think that as I grew in my career as a creative professional, the natural shift was to manage my own business as a freelancer, MC and voice teacher. I’ve also dabbled in the fashion business.

Tell us about your businesses Voicebox and The band Kokui. How did they get started and what has been their impact so far on you and the communities they serve?

VoiceBox is my vocal coaching venture. The Band Kokui was formed when I teamed up with some talented musicians to stage a concert in 2021. We enjoyed it so much that we continued that tradition. We collaborate as an ensemble but each of us also has solo endeavours. 

What has been your biggest challenge for the year with each business? How did you power through?

My biggest challenge has been juggling my many responsibilities while earning another Masters degree! It was worth the sacrifice though. 

What has been the most rewarding part of establishing Voicebox and The Band Kokui for you so far?

The most rewarding part of my work is the fact that my work doesn’t feel like ‘work.’ I thoroughly enjoy what I do, and that’s a blessing.

Who/what inspired you to follow your dreams when growing up?

My Dad certainly encouraged me to follow my dreams, and I was inspired to become an opera singer after I heard a recording of the legendary soprano Leontyne Price. I was mesmerised.

Where do you see yourself and your businesses in the next 10 years?

I see myself nurturing more art singers, establishing a full-fledged artistic training enterprise and becoming a Ghanaian cultural ambassador in a more official capacity. 

What advice would you give to any up-and-coming creatives in Ghana who want to pursue a full time career in the arts but are constantly encouraged to go the traditional route in a career? What would you say to them to keep pushing? 

When God blesses you with a gift, you have a duty to utilise it. Pursue it wisely, with the understanding that you must be able to support yourself financially as well. If that means working in a different field to support yourself while you pursue your artistic career, so be it. But never give up on your God-given talent— continue to invest in yourself and work on your craft.

Donned in his characteristic broad smile and always fresh, tailor-made suits, his roster boasts hundreds of top-tier events from weddings, to corporate, and private events. We sat down with DJ D-Rex in an exclusive interview to find out more about his life growing up, inspiration behind his creative startup and the impact its had on himself and his community. Let's dive right into his story in this Black History Month's Beyond the Frames feature. 

Let's begin with how it all started. Tell us a little bit about your childhood and one of your favorite memories growing up.

Growing up in a West Indian family and being the eldest of three siblings, gave me a perspective of being responsible and protective of my family. I was raised in The Bronx, New York and saw a lot of good and bad in the streets of New York City. But, I always vividly remember listening to amazing music from a multitude of cultures. My father loved music and seized every opportunity to play it when we were home. These experiences forged my appreciation for music and molded me to love what I do for a living.

Was there ever a turning point for you with pivoting from employee to business owner? Tell us more about that moment. What sparked the change if so?

I worked on Wall Street in the financial sector and in Sales, but never felt whole or satisfied in either arena. About 15 years ago, I was at a crossroads in my career in Sales and asked myself a simple question, “What is the easiest thing you can sell?” The answer that kept coming back to me after extensive introspection was myself. In Sales, the product is not what is sold, it’s the relationship and more importantly “Me”. At that junction, I felt motivated to pursue my passion and pivoted careers. I took a chance and started my company. I named it after what made me the happiest, the sound of music. That's when “The Sound Factory” was born.

Talk to us about your business. How did it get started and how does it connect with Black identity and culture?

From a young boy growing up, music has always been a part of me and has shaped me into the man I am today. That foundation led me to start this business to spread happiness and joy through the sound of music. What started as a passion project has evolved into a successful international brand, bringing Black communities together at their events through music. Black culture is defined through music. It has told our struggles as a people and our joys as well. In good times and bad, music has been the messenger for people of African descent. I wanted to share that message through my business and the sound of music is the tool I use. I have been around the world and absolutely love what I do with music and how my business resonates with multicultural audiences.

How did you discover Bôhten and what stood out to you about it?

I saw an advertisement of the Eyewear Company on Instagram and Facebook and was immediately amazed by two simple things. First, the styles and designs took my breath away. The frames are stunning! Second, the company is Black owned and operated, and has deep roots from Ghana. I purchased five pairs immediately and have since purchased an additional seven pairs. The designs and styles suit my fashion look and belief which simply summed up is this, “Fresh, Fly, Wild and Bold”

Who/what were some of your influences growing up? What about now?

First and foremost was Neville G. Blythe, my father and first sound engineer/DJ/Selector I ever knew. Bob Marley, The Sugarhill Gang, Grandmaster Flash, Kool Herc, Kid Capri, D-Nice, Michael Jackson, Bill Withers and Earth Wind and Fire to name a few are some of my musical influences. Disco, Reggae, Hip Hop, R&B, House, Salsa have all played major influences in my life journey. Today, I give credit to my family and friends who keep me motivated to be better and do more for my community. 

What have been some challenges you faced on this journey of entrepreneurship? What about rewards?

Being an entrepreneur I've faced challenges. Some consist of not knowing when your next client is going to book your services. In those seasons, I persevere by remaining faithful that my basic belief in selling myself and the relationships I've cultivated, along with the ones to come, will carry me forward. I have unwavering faith that the Architect of the Universe will take me, my brand and my business to limitless heights. I have done and seen a lot and my work isn’t done yet. The Sound Factory has more in store and the best is yet to come! As Biggie Smalls said, “Sky’s the Limit” 

Where do you see yourself and your business in the next 10 years? 

Training young, eager and passionate individuals on the DJ industry and on how to become successful entrepreneurs. Also, providing audio and sounds around the USA and on the African continent. I have seen some amazing things happening all over the continent and I want to be a part of the expansion and rise of my people.

What advice would you give to up-and-coming entrepreneurs? 

Work hard, have faith in yourself, network and build relationships. Never stop!

A soca artist, singer and songwriter, Nadia’s gift for storytelling has carried her from Tunapuna, Trinidad to stages across the world. Her words, melodies, and presence have resonated with generations of fans who sing along to her hits every Carnival season, cementing her as one of the leading voices of Caribbean women in soca.

From Words to Music: A Storyteller from the Start

Born and raised in Trinidad & Tobago, Nadia’s love affair with writing began early. Her mother, an avid writer herself, fostered a home filled with creativity and expression. By age three, Nadia's mother says she was already reading the newspaper, and soon after, she began writing short stories, mirroring her mother’s passion. That early love for language would later become the foundation of her remarkable career as one of soca’s most respected lyricists and performers.

Before she became a household name on stage, Nadia’s words were already shaping the sound of modern soca. She formed her all-female band “Sass”, a bold move that showcased both her leadership and commitment to empowering women in the industry. Her skill as a writer quickly caught the attention of major soca artists — leading her to pen songs for some of the genre’s biggest names. Her compositions began entering and winning competitions - both in Trinidad & around the Caribbean region, making her one of the most sought-after songwriters in the Caribbean music scene.

Every year, World Sight Day serves as a powerful reminder of how transformative access to eye care can be. This year, Bôhten Eyewear honored the occasion by partnering with Kaeme and Advocates for Community Partnerships (ACA) to host the Bôhten x Kaeme Eye Care & Wellness Outreach in the rural community of Juaso, Ghana — a village known for its women-led tradition of crafting authentic black soap.

A Community Rooted in Tradition — and Resilience

In Juaso, the art of black soap production is more than a livelihood; it’s cultural preservation. Dozens of women spend long hours near high heat, wood smoke, and outdoor elements to produce this globally sought-after product. While the tradition is celebrated, these conditions can place stress on both eye health and skin health — and access to preventative care in rural regions often remains limited.

Recognizing the need, Bôhten, Kaeme, and ACA brought resources directly to the community’s doorstep.

“Am I Seeing Clearly?”

The outreach began early in the morning, as residents gathered with curiosity and a bit of nervous excitement. Many admitted quietly that they had never received an eye screening before. For several participants, this was their first encounter with an optometrist, and for others, their first opportunity to ask questions about eye health.

With two licensed optometrists on-site (including our very own Dr. Henry Tsiquaye), Bôhten offered free eye screenings for more than 50 community members — testing for early signs of vision impairments such as glaucoma, cataracts and many others. Have you ever heard of CARIFESTA?

Well, every four years, the Caribbean unites in a spectacular showcase of creativity, culture & talent known as CARIFESTA — the Caribbean Festival of Arts. Since its inception in 1972, the festival has served as a stage for artists, performers, and storytellers from across the Caribbean region to share their craft and traditions with each other and the world. CARIFESTA is now recognized as the largest cultural festival in the Caribbean, highlighting the arts not only as entertainment but as a vital part of the region’s identity and development.

This year, CARIFESTA XV was hosted by Barbados in August 2025 under the theme “Caribbean Roots, Global Excellence.” The festival brought together thousands of creatives and audiences from around the Caribbean for ten days of action, including theatre and drama performances, dance performances, music concerts, fashion shows, visual art galleries, workshops and thought-provoking panel discussions. Each Caribbean country had their rich and diverse culture on display, showcasing what makes them so unique while also providing a reminder of what unites them all.

CARIFESTA is about more than performances though — it’s a place for Caribbean art and artists to thrive. Workshops in music, dance, voice and steelpan are available for persons to attend. Each one is hosted by esteemed regional professionals in the industry. Panel discussions on topics relevant to the arts in the Caribbean are also held which allow for open dialogue on issues, innovation and ideas.

From children experiencing theatre for the first time to communities celebrating age-old traditions from each country, CARIFESTA ensures there is an exchange among the islands and that Caribbean culture remains alive and thriving for generations to come.

A highlight of this year’s CARIFESTA was the Grand Market - an 8 day event not to be missed. It was the heartbeat of the festival as it hosted daily fashion shows, literary showcases, a children’s storytime, lunchtime performances, and a grand bazaar - a place where Caribbean entrepreneurs could showcase and sell their products ranging from books to wellness products to fashion and more.
