What’s it about: 

Badrinath Ki Dulhania is nowhere similar to Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania. Neither the plot nor the message. While Humpty was a movie with no cause, Badrinath Ki Dulhania comes with a strong message. The only similarity is the lead pair! Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan can create magic together. The movie is set in the small town of Jhansi and Kota where patriarchy still prevails. Badrinath, who is a tenth passed, has been raised in a family that believes that men are the sole decision makers while women only belong in the kitchen. He falls in love with the highly ambitious and career oriented girl Vaidehi (Alia). While Badri thinks he is the most eligible bachelor and no girl can ever reject him, Vaidehi doesn’t believe in the concept of marriages and wants to be the ‘son’ of the house! This is where their values clash and the sweet love story turns bitter. BKD sends out a very strong message on equal rights and dowry while keeping it vibrant. Hats off to Shashank Khaitan’s direction. Vaidehi’s character is the spine of this movie. She’s competitive and real; she’s pulled down but knows her way back; she protects her dreams and doesn’t let anyone manipulate her. She makes the movie so relatable.

What’s hot: 

The movie is likable and will make you smile throughout but it also has heavy scenes where Alia and Varun have proved their acting skills. While we have already seen Alia in endearing roles, this was a first time for Varun. Varun keeps you intrigued with his varied emotions throughout the film. He can get serious in a moment and dramatic in another! We loved his comic timing (he never disappoints) and his chemistry with Alia. Varun’s monolog in the last scene is definitely the highlight of the movie. Alia’s work is flawless (as usual). Right from her accent to her looks – she’s aced it all. Sahil Vaid deserves special credits for his good work. Gauhar Khan’s presence also took us by surprise. The soundtracks of the movie were a total hit and fit the scenes perfectly. Tamma Tamma remake was a great decision and it worked quite well for the makers. The title track of the movie was an apt release for the Holi week and goes well with the theme. Bits and parts of the movie definitely proved it to be a Dharma film, we can’t deny! While we have seen many movies where the hero helps the heroine achieve her goals but in this movie, the girl helps the boy improve and become a better individual. The first half of the film deals with prevalent issues like child discrimination, dowry system, and patriarchal society and shifts its focus to the relationship of Badri and Vaidehi in the second half.  The movie is not about two of them finding a way to their love, it is about finding their own selves, which is what keeps us intrigued.

What’s not:

The movie gives a sense of nostalgia and makes you feel you’ve been there, seen that. There is nothing new about the movie that will make you excited. A few scenes look so out-dated and the climax is extremely predictable. There is so much more that the screenplay could have offered. Kota and Jhansi are shown to be extremely orthodox places which they necessarily aren’t. The film somehow loses its heat and ends up being nothing but a mainstream Bollywood film. The love songs don’t match to ‘Samjhawan’ and that is something we missed terribly.

What to do:

You may want to watch this movie only for Alia and Varun’s chemistry!

It is a great tactic to release the trailer of a film that is based on a female character a day before Women’s Day. As soon as a girl is born, a lot of stereotypes come along. A woman is thought of as the weaker one but this movie proves the otherwise. It captures the true essence of women. It shows that this generation’s women don’t cry over a broken heart, they fix it. The movie showcases a fearless girl who goes alone for her honeymoon and breaks all the conventions of the society. The film tells us that a woman doesn’t need a man to be complete. Kangana plays a carefree ‘Rani’ in the movie and depicts the struggles and achievements of a lady. She indeed proves that all women are ‘queens’ in reality!

3. Mardaani

We don’t often hear physical strength being compared to a woman. Girls are supposed to be ‘girly’. This movie showed that this a long-gone scenario. In today’s day and age, a lady is fearless and courageous. She can stand up for herself and can match men in every field possible. Rani Mukherji breaks the stereotypes of a lady police officer. She shows how a lady can go to any extent to support the right and fight against the wrongs.

It is not quite common for people to seek help from a ‘woman’ during a serious situation. The society undermines the power of a lady and thinks that her independence makes her selfish. This movie tells us the story of the extremely courageous Neerja Bhanot played by the gorgeous Sonam Kapoor. It tells us how an independent lady can also love selflessly and maintain the balance between professional and personal relationships. It showcases how the courage of a lady can save everyone, while the men ran away (the pilots made a swift move when the plane got hijacked but were called back).  Women know their duties well and would do anything to fulfill their given work and won’t think about themselves even once. The film also shows how her dad believes in her when no one else does and has always treated her like a son! Way to go!

5. Mary Kom

A movie that highlights the real life of Mary Kom. It celebrates feminism in another way and has set new standards for women. It gave a new tagline ‘fight like a woman’ instead of being constantly said ‘be lady-like’. The film brings forward the facts and struggles a girl has to face through every stage of life. The movie proves that strong women can be beautiful, too. Beauty doesn’t come with good looks but good thoughts.  It redefined the way women are looked at and portrayed them as an achievement instead of a burden. 5. Veer – Zaara

This 2004 romantic drama starring Shah Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta was directed by Yash Chopra, and was one of the most highly anticipated films before its release. The movie is based on the wretched story of star-crossed lovers, Veer Pratap Singh, who is an Indian Officer and  Zaara Hayat Khan, who belongs to Pakistan. The duo met in India and fell in love with each other but their happy times didn’t last long as Zaara’s parents were totally against their relationship. Veer was left to rot in the Pakistani jail and only after 22 years did he find his way out of the prison, all thanks to his lawyer Saamiya Siddiqui. The lovers finally reunited despite such a strenuous journey. And hey, their love only grew in all the years that they weren’t together. Veer Zaara is the perfect watch for a romantic binge movie session!

6. Jab We Met

Jab We Met was helmed by Imtiaz Ali and starred the ex-flames Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor Khan in the lead roles. This movie was certainly one-of-its-kind. Geet and Aditya were complete opposites, and this film was all about how they both tried to overcome their failed relationships, and eventually end up falling in love. The loud Bhatinda ki Punjaban, Geet aided the melancholic businessman Aditya to get back on the track of life. This movie is a must-watch for all the die-hard romantics. 7. 2 States

This film was based on Chetan Bhagat’s bestseller novel ‘2 States’. The movie was directed by Abhishek Varma, and had Alia Bhatt and Arjun Kapoor as protagonists Krish and Ananya respectively. The movie highlighted on how two individuals from different cultural backgrounds, one was a Punjabi while the other was Tamilian, overcome the odds and marry successfully with the permission of their orthodox parents. The film showcases how Krish and Ananya persuade their parents to affirm their relationship and allow them to marry each other. The film also gives out bitter facts about the marriages in India, such as dowry. It is a simple and sweet film, totally worth watching with your Valentine.  Who knows it might also end up giving you the courage to convince your girlfriend’s parents to get you guys hooked for life.

8. Aashiqui 2

Aashiqui 2 is a 2013 Indian musical romantic drama film directed by Mohit Suri. The movie starred the debutant Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor in the lead roles and was produced by Bhushan Kumar and Mukesh Bhatt. Set in the early 2010s, Aashiqui 2 is a love story centering on the turbulent relationship between musicians Rahul and Arohi, a relationship which is affected by Rahul’s issues with alcohol abuse and temperament.
