Hindi Film Music’s New Golden Boy – Amit Trivedi

Amit Trivedi seems to have suddenly appeared all over the filmy horizon. He seems to be everywhere, at all award shows, on the mastheads of new hindi films. Every new listing of talented musicians seems to have his name in it. Is he really that new or have we just begun to realise the prodigious talent within this young musician?

Actually, Amit Trivedi has been writing and composing since he was 19 years old and during his college days he was a part of a band known as OM. He went on to compose music for ad jingles, theatre and TV serials.

He stepped into the world of film music when he was chosen by Anurag Kashyap to write the music for his film DEV D. The film was meant to be his inaugural platform, but due to production problems, the film was delayed and it was the film Aamir, where Amit Trivedi’s background score became his launch pad.

Dev D

The release of the film Dev D in 2008, however was the signal of the advent of a new golden boy in the crowded Hindi film music scene. The film had 18 tracks of different genres and Amit sang at least 5 of them himself. He also wrote the lyrics for the song Aankh Micholi. The music was unusual and the tracks varied from the joyful to sorrowful, with Rajasthani folk music, rock music, and some aspects of classical music all combining together to give us an unusual and haunting score. He won many awards and nominations for this film and it was very evident that he was going to become a very bright star on the music skyline. Click on the link to Listen to the music of Dev D.

Wake Up Sid

Iktaara was one of the most popular songs of the year 2009. It was Amit’s composition and it went on to become his signature song and one of the contributing factors in making Wake Up Sid a great box office hit.

Udaan

Udaan has just been released, but the music of this film began to make waves much earlier. The combination of rock music fuelled by guitar based compositions, with music which could trace its origins to rural India, we have a fusion which is unusual, unconventional but also hauntingly beautiful.

Aisha

Aisha is about to be released and is yet another film where the music has preceded the hype of the film. According to the chartbuster ratings on major music channels and radio stations, Amit Trivedi might has lived up to the expectations of his fans. ‘Suno Aisha’ and ‘Gal Mitthi Mitthi’ are two of my favourites from this album.

No One Killed Jessica

A movie based on the life and death of real life model Jessica Lal, Amit has begun working on the music of ‘No One Killed Jessica’. Not much is known about the movie or the music of this film, but we will keep you updated!

Amit’s talent lies not only in his ability to understand the story of a film and the score which will merge in beautifully with the film, but also in his ability to provide a score which can vary from haunting soulful melodies to foot tapping rhythms. Comparisons with A R Rahman are inevitable since Rahman has stood like a colossus over the film music scene for many years. This interview of Amit at PFC will definitely tell you a lot more about his life as a musician.

But we have to realise that Amit Trivedi is here to stay and he produces and performs music which is has his own unique signature and style. He is not only the new face of Indian film music but he is also likely to be here long enough to become the grand old man of Indian film music.

Music of Aisha – A Spellbinding Score from Amit Trivedi

With Aisha releasing in a few days, Amit Trivedi is shining as the new star on the Bollywood music scene. Every new music album of his is awaited with breathless anticipation. Comparisons withA R Rahman are inevitable, since there is the same sense of excitement when his music is about to be released.

Combine Amit Trivedi’s talents with those of Javed Akhtar and you know that the result will be something unique, foot-tapping and unforgettable. They have teamed up in producer Rhea Kapoor and director Rajshree Ojha’s film Aisha. The music has just been released, and sure enough it has created a buzz around town and once again it seems like Amit Trivedi is about to score a WINNER.

The film stars Abhay Deol and Sonam Kapoor, and seems to be a chic flick with a difference. Both these stars have established themselves as stars with a difference, they choose their films carefully and they always give us superb performances, even though the film may not leave too much of a mark in the box office.

Aisha Music Review

Amit Trivedi has composed a thoroughly different type of score for this film, in keeping with the youthful scenario and the refreshing young and fresh look of the cast and story. He has himself stated – “ ‘Aisha’ has a very young, bubbly and vivacious kind of music. Since the film is a romantic comedy, the music is very different from my previous film”

The title track of Aisha, ‘Suno Aisha’, lays the foundation for an upbeat theme through the entire music score. Amit Trivedi, Nakash Aziz and Ash King have provided the vocals. ‘Suno Aisha’ is steadily climbing the best seller charts, FYI. Gal Mithi Mithi has a strong flavour of Punjab folk music embedded in it, combined with an urban appeal and a rocking beat. Even in numbers such as Shaam and Behke Behke, the youthful flavour has been kept intact, and the theme of joy and laughter and energy is carried through every lyric and score.

Overall the music of Aisha is very impressive. The singers are all fairly new, and Anushka Manchand and Neuman Pinto and Nikhil D’Souza seem to have finally found a launchpad for their amazing voices. Javed Akhtar as always writes poetry with ease and beauty and Amit Trivedi adds music to it, to give us an unforgettable score.

Bubbly, peppy and light-hearted, the music of Aisha mirrors the spirit and the enthusiasm of the film. Jane Austen’s Emma never looked this bright and lively before, and the world just seems to be suddenly brighter, full of enthusiasm and laughter.

Upcoming Hindi Movies to Watch Out For in 2010

Bollywood has now become one of the biggest film industries in the world grossing millions not only in India but in other countries as well. While the number of hits so far this year has been disappointing, there is much to look forward to in the coming months. We now take a look into the most anticipated hindi movies yet to hit the theatres.

Releasing on 23^rd July, Khatta Meetha is a satire on the Indian system that promises to tickle your bones while it gets you thinking.The movie shows how a constuction contractor Sachin Tichkule (Akshay Kumar), battles to make his dreams come true as he is faced with the hurdles of rampant corruption and bribery. In the process, he also comes up against his ex-girlfriend (Trisha Krishnan) who turns out to be the new Municipal commissioner. The protagonist Tichkule is said to be inspired by cartoonist R.K Laxman’s ‘Common Man’. After having entertained audiences with the likes of Heri Pheri, it remains to be seen if the duo of Akshay Kumar and director Priyadarshan can work its magic yet again.

After Aamir in 2008, Rajkumar Gupta’s next directorial venture- No One Killed Jessica, is based on one of India’s most controvertial murders, that of model Jessica Lall . The film has a powerful star cast with Vidhya Balan playing the role of Jessica’s sister Sabrina Lall and Rani Mukherjee playing a reporter. It has been shot in New Delhi and covers the long struggle of the family and friends of Jessica to bring to justice the perpetrators of the crime that was committed in 1999. Having been in the news for some time now, the movie is expected to hit the theatres on 6th August.

Also releasing on the same day is Aisha, a bollywood adaptation of Jane Austen’s book Emma. It marks the foray into Bollywood of Anil Kapoor’s younger daughter, Rhea Kapoor as a producer. Directed by Rajshree Ojha, the film stars the elder Kapoor sibling, Sonam, in the lead role of Aisha. Cast opposite her is Abhay Deol who plays the role of Arjun. The story covers the life of Aisha and her friends as the former tries to play cupid for all the single people around her, much to the annoyance of Arjun. In the process, she often oversteps the line thanks to her instrusive behaviour while Arjun tries to prevent her from getting into trouble because of it. In addition to the talented lead pair, the film also features appearances by Cyrus Sahukar and Arunoday Singh.

Another eagerly awaited movie this year is We Are Family. Riding high on the success of My Name is Khan, we see Kajol in the lead again, alongside Kareena Kapoor and Arjun Rampal. This movie is said to be a remake of the Hollywood movie Stepmom starring Julia Roberts. Directed by Siddarth Malhotra and produced by Karan Johar, it is anticipated to be amongst the big scorers this year. The music has been given by the talented trio of Shankar Ehsaan Loy. Slated for a September release, the movie promises to be worth a watch.

Besides the above mentioned movies, Amir Khan’s Production venture – Peepli Live and the Ranbir Kapoor – Priyanka Chopra starrer- Anjaana Anjaani are also amongst the movies being looked forward to by movie goers. Many other movies which boast of big names are also expected to release this year. Looks like its going to be a busy year ahead for all in tinseltown.

We Are Family – Kajol and KJo take on ‘Stepmom’

One of the most eagerly awaited movies this year is We Are Family. Riding high on the success of My Name is Khan, we see Kajol in the lead again, alongside Kareena Kapoor and Arjun Rampal. This movie is said to be a remake of the Hollywood movie Stepmom starring Julia Roberts. We just stop and wonder when this typicalBollywood fascination with Hollywood will stop, with ‘remakes’ being made year after year.

The story of We Are Family is pretty much the same as that of Stepmom. It revolves around the life of Maya (Kajol), who leads a happy family life with her three children despite being divorced from her husband Aman (Arjun Rampal). But things take an unusual turn when Aman introduces them to his girlfriend Shreya (Kareena Kapoor). Encountered with a situation, Maya must figure out a way to bring the family back together as the two women learn to put their issues aside.

Directed by Siddarth Malhotra and produced by Karan Johar, We Are Family is anticipated to be amongst the big scorers this year. The music has been given by the talented trio of Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy. Slated for a September release, this hindi film promises to be worth a watch.

No One Killed Jessica – Rajkumar Gupta’s Next Hindi Film

Credited with the critically acclaimed Aamir in 2008, No One Killed Jessica is Rajkumar Gupta’s next directorial venture. Based on one of India’s most controversial murders, No One Killed Jessica is the story of the murder of model Jessica Lal and the state of events following it. Much like Aamir, it seems to be yet another social commentary on the state of Indian administration.

Jessica was shot dead in a Delhi restaurant where she was serving as a celebrity barmaid at socialite Bina Ramani’s party. Despite the dozens who witnessed the murder, it took 21 years to finally punish the guilty. Gupta has claimed that the title and the script of the movie were inspired by a headline carried by the Times of India in 2006 after all the accused in the case were acquitted.

Khatta Meetha – Yet Another Akshay Kumar ‘Comedy’

Releasing on 23^rd July, Khatta Meetha is a satire on the Indian system that promises to tickle your bones while it gets you thinking. The movie shows how a construction contractor, Sachin Tichkule (Akshay Kumar), battles to make his dreams come true as he is faced with the hurdles of rampant corruption and bribery. In the process, he also comes up against his ex-girlfriend (Trisha Krishnan) who turns out to be the new Municipal commissioner.

The protagonist is said to be inspired by ‘The Common Man’, a creation of one of India’s most famous cartoonists R.K Laxman’s. Akshay Kapoor was recently photographed visiting the 86 year old at the hospital, a move which was criticized by many as a poor publicity stunt for Khatta Meetha.

Regardless of that, the actor’s ability to have the audience in splits has seen his popularity grow in recent times. Trisha, on the other hand, will be making her Bollywood debut with Khatta Meetha though she has been a part of several successful Tami and Telegu films for which she has received many awards. After having entertained audiences with the likes of Heri Pheri, it remains to be seen if the duo of Akshay Kumar and director Priyadarshan can work its magic yet again.

Anjaana Anjaani – Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra come together

Anjaana Anjaani is one of the much awaited hindi films this year. It’s the first time Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra have come together on screen. Releasing in October 2010, the movie has been directed by Siddharth Anand of the Salaam Namaste fame.

The story is mainly about the characters played by the duo who after repeated attempts, fail to succeed in their love lives and careers. As a result, they both decide to commit suicide by jumping off a bridge. But Fate, as it turns out, has its own plans as the two turn up at the same bridge. As the story moves on, it unravels the love between these two strangers.

The film has been shot largely in San Fransisco, Las Vegas and New York. As a part of a comic scene, Ranbir has even lent his voice to a one and a half minute song. The song, however, will not be featured on the music CD.

While Ranbir has already tasted success in 2010 with his movie Rajneeti, Priyanka Chopra has still to hog the lime light. Especially after the lukewarm response her previous movie Pyaar Impossible received, Priyanka is hoping to make a bigger impact this time around.

Come 6^th August and hindi movie buffs will have another Sonam Kapoor movie to enjoy. ‘Aisha’, is a desi adaptation of Jane Austen’s book Emma. It marks the foray into Bollywood of Anil Kapoor’s younger daughter, Rhea Kapoor, albeit as a producer. Directed by Rajshree Ojha, the film stars the elder Kapoor sibling, Sonam, in the lead role of Aisha. Cast opposite her is the talented actor, Abhay Deol, who plays the role of Arjun.

The story covers the life of a young upper class Delhi girl Aisha and her friends Pinky, Randhir and Dhruv. In her attempt to play cupid for all the single people around her, Aisha often oversteps the line, thanks to her intrusive behavior. Arjun, who feels she should mind her own business, tries to prevent her from getting into trouble because of this habit. High on style and optimism, Aisha likes to dictate her own terms and goes about match-making, much to the annoyance of Arjun.

In addition to the talented lead pair, ‘Aisha’ also features appearances by Cyrus Sahukar, Arunoday Singh and Ira Dubey. The background score has been composed by none other than the gifted Amit Trivedi, known for his music in Dev D. Shot in Delhi, Hrishikesh and Mumbai, this romantic comedy seems to be quite promising.
