Kala Ghoda Arts Festival 2012 brings in the best of art and culture to Mumbai !

Every year, since 1999, the Kala Ghoda Association hosts the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival to draw attention to the unique and beautiful Kala Ghoda Precinct area. Currently in its 14^th edition, the festival draws visitors in thousands, cutting across economic class not just from the city but also all over the country and the world.

In addition to setting up the art fest, the association has helped upgrade the area, restore buildings and facades and improve amenities.

The Kala Ghoda Arts Festival starts from February 4 to February 12, 2012 bringing with it a kaleidoscope of music, dance, theatre, literature, street stalls, films, food, workshops, visual arts and heritage walks.

With an aim to brighten Mumbai’s art and culture scene, Kala Ghoda, this year is a mix of old and new, fresh and antiquated, an amalgamation of the yesteryears legends along with the best-in-class talent of today. The nine-day festival aspires to bring to life the rich culture of art in all forms.

A brief glimpse of some of the highlights of the festival:

Startling, stunning, soothing, inspiring and experiential displays of art will form the backdrop of the festival with works of Reena Kallat, Brinda Miller, Krsna Mehta, Tobias Megerie, Mumbai Esplanade Project, Arzaan Khambatta and EE Studio among others. World renowned artist Tracy Lee Stum in collaboration with the American Center of the US Consulate will also grace the festival with her artistic display of 3D images of the street festival live as it happens.

KGAF has always strived and worked towards bringing to the people something new and interesting. After Veena Maik, Golshifteh Farahani goes nude; gets banned!

Not long ago, Pakistani starlet Veena Malik caused outrage when she posed nude with an ISI tattoo on her arm for the Indian edition of FHM magazine. Close on the heels of that uproar in her conservative Muslim home country, a Paris-based Iranian actress Golshifteh Farahani, has allegedly been banned from returning to her homeland after posing nude for a French magazine.

The Telegraph from Britain has reported that Iranian government officials have informed the 29-year-old Golshifteh that she is no longer welcome in Iran after posing naked for Madame Le Figaro magazine, an act perceived to be anti-Islam.

Golshifteh told the Telegraph that the Iranian government has sent a communication telling her not to travel back to her homeland. “I was told by a Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guide official that Iran does not need any actors or artists. You may offer your artistic services somewhere else”, Farahani said.

AR Rahman made news with his latest compositions in the film Ek Deewana Tha, however an excess of anything can spell doom, and the same is the case with the track 'Hosanna' which has been making waves in the music world.

The music track is popular and it seems to grow in popularity with each passing day, the Christian Secular Forum (CSF) in Mumbai has objected to the use of the word ‘Hosanna’. They claim the word to be a sacred term used only within prayer songs among Christians and Jews.

We are very proud to once again associate with Mr. A. R. Rahman and Javed Sahab for the music score and lyrics of our film Ekk Deewanna Tha which releases on the 17th of February.

The Tamil and Telegu versions of the film (which too were directed by Gautham Menon) were released in 2010 in which the same song which is currently in the news, Hossana, was used.

We, Mr. Rahman, Gautham Menon, Javed Sahab and all involved in the film are therefore extremely surprised to have heard from Mr. Joseph Dias of the CSF on their views now, on our song.

Mr. Rahman said "As with any film project I work on, I had spent several months researching before composing/writing all the songs for Ekk Dewaana Tha and had consulted friends who are Christian in particular about the use of the word "Hosanna" in this song. The song was a sensation when it was released in the South a couple of years ago and it went on to win all possible music awards and was well received by all communities! Therefore I am deeply concerned about the sentiments of all those who appear to be hurt by this song"

Javed Sahab said " When we write lyrics with great composers such as Mr. Rahman, who is one of the most respectable human beings I have had the pleasure of working with, the intention is never to insult any religion, why would we?"

Fox Star Spokesperson says "Our organisation, our music partners Sony Music Entertainment, our Producers and all of us are responsible organisations and our view is that more often than not creativity, freedom of speech and expression in art form are stifled by some people who have their own agendas. We have replied to Mr. Jospeh Dias today by letter."

They say those who wish to sing will always find a song. And guess ACP Pradyuman and his team have found one for themselves. The team of cops, who is known for their stern characters on screen, recently shed their hard on screen images and donned the brand new melodious avatar. For the first time ever, CID team consisting of ACP Pradyuman, Inspector Daya and Inspector Abhijeet sang a song, which is going to be part of one of the episodes of the longest running crime thriller.

The actors recently recorded a lullaby ‘Aari Aaja Neendiya’ from the Mehmood starrer movie Kunwara Baap. And guess who inspired them to record a song!!! None other than the legendary Lata Mangeshkar! The team also took her blessings before recording.

Asha Bhosle joins in as the Jury for Sahara One’s Sur-Kshetra To Judge the best singers from Team India and Team Pakistan

Asha Bhosle along with Abida Parveen and Runa Laila will be judging the teams of India and Pakistan mentored by Himesh Reshammiya and Atif Aslam respectively.

The upcoming singing based reality show Sur-Kshetra just got bigger and better. The TV show that is modeled as the battle of singing talent between India and Pakistan has Himesh Reshammiya and Atif Aslam mentoring teams of their respective countries.

And latest development on the show is that our very own Asha Bhosle will be judging the reality show. A source close to the show informs us, "Asha ji has been confirmed as the judge for Sur-Kshetra. She might have come as guest judge on some shows earlier but this is the first time that she will be judging any show as the principal judge. Along with Asha, there will be Abida Parveen and Runa Laila on the panel of judges. This is amongst the finest names in the singing fields from both countries that one can think of".

The show will start rolling in Dubai from next week.

Writers' Bloc 3, Yatri's Theatre Festival, Roland Schimmelpfennig's THE GOLDEN DRAGON !

Dear Readers,

German playwright Roland Schimmelpfennig is acknowledged as one of the important playwrights of his generation. The 44 year old playwright has more than 20 plays to his credit and his work has been performed in more than 40 countries. His 2009 play, THE GOLDEN DRAGON, produced by the East London based ATC (Actors Touring Company), and directed by Ramin Gray, the company's Artistic Director, is touring India. The production, courtesy the British Council in India has had shows in Mumbai and in Delhi and is currently playing at the Jagriti theatre in Bangalore, after which there will be in one show on 2nd February in Thrissur, at the International theatre festival of Kerala. We share with you some reflections on the play and the production in our Feature for the week.

This is a week of Reviews given the showcase of 12 new plays at the third edition of the Writers' Bloc Festival. The festival concludes its run at Prithvi theatre this week and will now have shows at the NCPA. The two Marathi plays in the festival-Sagar Dehmukh's SHILLAK and Dharmakirti Sumant's NATAK NAKO will be performed again at the Yashwantrao Chavan auditorium in Matunga (W) this weekend. Updated reviews include the reviews of SHILLAK and NATAK NAKO along with Siddharth Kumar's SPUNK and Abhishek Majumdar's THE DJINNS OF EIDGAH.

Om Katare's Yatri will celebrate its 33^rd anniversary at Prithvi Theatre next week. The festival features the 500^th show of its popular comedy, HADH KAR-DI AAPNE. It opens with an inaugural ceremony on 24^th January, followed by the play, GAJ FOOT INCH.

It has been our endeavor to engage you with events about Literature and the other Arts from time to time because Theatre is a multi-faceted art form. We believe that theatre makers can enrich their work from such engagement and audiences too can deepen their experience in the process.The Asia Society India Centre has organized a tour of an exhibition of the artist LN Tallur at the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum, Byculla on Saturday, 21^st January. The programme of the exhibition-tour says that 'Tallur's work delves deep into Indian culture, making witty and charged references to religious and political subjects. The exhibition features sculptures and room-sized installations that allude to the decay of traditional signifiers and icons, and to their uneasy integration with a world of industry, progress and development.' Tasneem Zakharia Mehta, the curator of the exhibition and artist Sharmila Samant will lead the tour. Registra! tion begins at 11 am and the two-hour tour starts at 11.30 am.
