Jiah Khan suicide

2013-06-08T20:33:00.005-07:00

Cineswami tells us about the tragic tale of actor Jiah Khan who committed suicide last night in Mumbai

Good people often die young is the proverbial cliché that we have heard since we were born. Yet, this cliché is brought to harsh life when someone young actually dies. Rituparno Ghosh was too young to go at 49, but when Jiah Khan departs at 25, you wonder whether the person upstairs has some sort of master plan and if yes, the cruelty of it.
Jiah’s painfully brief life and career have already been written about in these pages but what has not been revealed is the reason why she was out of work. It is all due to terrorists. In 2008 the world watched while Mumbai was under siege when a handful of terrorists held one of the world’s greatest cities to ransom. After the danger was quelled, one of the Indian Government’s reactions was typically knee jerk. It was discovered that some of the masterminds behind the attack had been living in India for months and planning the carefully orchestrated attacks.

In a classic scenario of bolting the stable door after the horse has bolted, the Government did not renew the work visas of many foreign nationals in the country and in the case of those whose visa had expired and overstayed in the country, they were shut out completely with appeals falling on deaf bureaucratic ears in Indian high commissions and embassies around the world, especially in the UK. British national Jiah Khan was one of these unfortunates.
Post Nishabd and Ghajini, Jiah wasn’t short of offers, but to act in movies she physically had to be in India and thanks to the new immigration laws she was back home in London. Chance Pe Dance, that she’d already shot a bit for was one of the casualties and Genelia D’Souza replaced her. However, in her mother Rabia, she had one determined manager. Rabia hired a PR agency to make sure that her daughter stayed in the spotlight. Jiah could act in Housefull because her portions of the film were shot in London.

Jiah’s PR agent ensured that she attended all Bollywood themed events in London. One such was the premiere of Delhi Belly where Jiah bedazzled in a gown as the Bollywood paparazzi went berserk. It wasn’t just the photographers – the assembled crowd also went wild while she walked the red carpet, proving that her popularity remained intact. All the while, her mother kept a watchful eye on her.
In late 2012, the Indian government repealed immigration laws and those formerly excluded from the country were finally allowed back in, leading a rush from the British film industry that has little or no use for Asian faces to Bollywood. Jiah was one of them. Sadly, as she found out, it is a cruel and uncaring industry where out of sight is out of mind and you have to start from scratch and compete with flavours of the season.
We do not know and cannot speculate on the reasons for Jiah’s death or even how she died. What we do know is that apparently the last call on her phone was from Aditya Pancholi’s son Suraj, who she was seeing, and that the police have called him in for questioning. We can only hope that ‘God takes soonest who he or she loves best’ is true.

Indian beauties who won International beauty pageants

2012-06-17T20:03:00.002-07:00

Reita Faria: Reita Faria was the first Indian woman to ever win an international title since its inception. She was crowned Miss World in the year 1966. She however shunned the glamour world later and gave herself to medicinal practice.

Zeenat Aman: After being crowned the 2nd runners up at the Miss India contest, Zeenat Aman went on to win the Miss Asia Pacific title in 1970, again being the first Indian to do so. Post her win she joined Bollywood and totally changed the face of the Indian woman in Hindi cinema. She was considered the Original Diva of Bollywod.

Sushmita Sen: In another first for the Indian nation, Sushmita Sen brought home the most coveted crown: that of Miss Universe in the year 1994. She too joined Bollywood, where she is known for her bold and fearless instinct.

Aishwarya Rai: Perhaps the most famous of all Indian beauty queens is Aishwarya Rai. She won the title of Miss World the same year as Sen and there has been no looking back for her since.

Diana Hayden: Diana Hayden brought home the Miss World Title for a third time in 1997. She too joined the Hindi film industry but could not replicate the success of her seniors.

Yukta Mookhey: Yukta Mookhey joined the Indian Miss World brigade in 1999 becoming the fourth one to do so. Her Bollywood career was a miserable one as the few films she acted in bombed at the box-office and she was never able to establish herself as a bankable actress.

Lara Dutta: Lara Dutta became only the second Indian woman to win the Miss Universe pageant, in 2000, after Sushmita Sen. Lara Dutta now, is a successful Bollywood actress and producer and, of course, a proud mommy to baby Sara.

Priyanka Chopra: Priyanka Chopra was the last person to win the Miss World crown from India and that was in the same year as Lara Dutta’s win. Today, she is the reigning queen of Bollywood and is considered to be one of the best actresses of her batch.

Dia Mirza: Dia Mirza contributed to the creation of history when she won the Miss Asia Pacific title the very year that Lara Dutta and Priyanka Chopra won the Miss Universe and Miss World title respectively. It was the only time that a nation had picked up all three major awards in a single year.

Nicole Faria: Nicole Faria is the first Indian to win the Miss Earth pageant since its inception in 2001. She won the crown in December 2010 and is the current holder of the title.

Size zero vs Curvaceous in Bollywood

The battle is on in Bollywood. This time, it's Kareena, Sonakshi and Vidya Balan in the arena. It all stared with Bebo branding the other two as 'fat' not curvaceous.

10 iconic and eternal beauties of Bollywood

2012-06-08T19:46:00.000-07:00

Waheeda Rehman

Waheeda Rehman has to be one of the most graceful actresses ever. In an era when theatrics ruled, she stuck to naturally portraying her characters. She preferred meaty roles as opposed to just being the arm candy of leading actors. She had a charm few others managed to match and gave us some very fine & memorable performances with films like 'Pyaasa', 'Chaudhvin Ka Chand', 'Guide', etc.

Meena Kumari

Tragedy and Meena Kumari are synonymous. She was the queen when it came to playing tragic roles as they ironically mirrored her real life. She was spurned by her husband, yearned for children; all of which found an outlet on the screen. Her acting was so fine that people cried when she cried and felt helpless when she did.

Rekha

Nothing spells mysterious as the name Rekha does. Like Cleopatra or Marilyn Monroe, her mystique transcends boundaries. Even in her 50s she looks as radiant and sexy as ever while actresses in their 20s and 30s pale in comparison. She never needed a man by her side to make her presence felt, which was seen in her reel as well as real life. The only reason she isn’t a global phenomenon is because she has never endorsed a brand, courted offers from Hollywood or is active on social media.

Smita Patil

If anybody ever wants to learn acting, the late Smita Patil is the one to be idolised. She showed everyone what she had and others didn't. She breathed life into her characters, so much so that people could see the lightest of scars the character was made up of and empathised with it. She could easily be called the mother of Arty cinema. Be it films like 'Bhumika', the Marathi film 'Umbartha', 'Arth' or 'Mirch Masala', her roles always stood out. Actresses of today who only think that flaunting their minimally fed bodies is enough to be termed as acting, should take a leaf or two out of this legendary actor’s life and role in cinema.

Sridevi

Sridevi, or Bollywood's 'Chandni', was the supposed arch rival of Madhuri in the 90s and rightly so. She was the only one who could give her competition at the time. Given her talent, filmmakers obviously clamoured to get her to sign their films. Her versatility was superb which was seen in 'Chaalbaaz' (a Seeta Aur Geeta remake), where she played totally opposite characters with ease. She lent her sexy charm to probably the 1st sci-fi movie of Bollywood, 'Mr. India', with her saucy number – Kaate nahin kat te. Her funny antics as Hawaa Hawaai or serious mentally challenged roles in 'Sadma' drew equal applause from the audiences.

Nargis

Nargis was the first lady of Indian cinema. She was the foundation of Raj Kapoor’s cinematic fantasies. Without her, the RK banner wouldn’t have been what it is today. Films like 'Shree 420', 'Awaara', 'Barsaat', 'Chori Chori' and 'Andaz' wouldn’t be the classics they are without her. Not only famous in India; she was one of our most recognised actresses abroad. Russians, especially, fell in love with her; her Indo-Russian co-production 'Pardesi' was a blockbuster in Russia. She gave iconic hits like 'Jogan' and 'Mela' opposite Dilip Kumar but her greatest performance came with 'Mother India' (1957).

Madhubala

A lot of actresses idolise her but none can come even close to the charm that this lady possessed. Her beauty was the talk of the town and audiences were awestruck whenever she filled the screen oblivious to the fact that it was only a black & white frame. People would have gone berserk had it been in color. And it’s not only her beauty that made headlines; she possessed some fine acting skills too. In fact her song, Pyar kiya toh darna kya, from 'Mughal-e-Azam' is still immortalised in people’s memories. Sadly, Madhubala was born with a congenital heart condition and left this world long before she should have. Though she has left a gaping hole, she is forever immortalised in people’s hearts and will never fade from their memory.

Aishwarya Rai

This lady is often termed as the most beautiful woman on Earth, a fact I’d like to differ with, and there is no dearth of her ardent admirers. Apart from really fine looks, she also is a fabulous actor and has given some super hits like 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam', 'Devdas', etc. But the real reason why she must be included in this list is because she was one of the first actresses to put India & Bollywood on a global map. It is because of her that people realized that Bollywood is more than just a small copy cat industry of Hollywood. It’s still a long way before we aren’t stereotyped but this is at least a start.

Madhuri Dixit

Her dance numbers became cult hits with every woman trying to master those priceless expressions– a feat which today’s innumerable raunchy dance numbers aren’t able to come even close to. She soon became a force to reckon with, not only with her stupendous dance numbers, but with her fierce screen presence and her acting abilities.

Kajol

She might not be the most beautiful actress around but she sure is one of the most talented ones. She was born into quite a talented gene pool taking into consideration her mother Tanuja and aunt Nutan. She is really versatile as an actor and has played the tom-boyish, non-glamorous roles (K2H2) with as much conviction as the demure & girly avatar in DDLJ. Her screen presence is such that she can give any mainstream actor a run for his money. No wonder she was the most popular leading lady to be cast opposite the King Khan. People went berserk whenever this duo was seen on the screen together. But her popularity went far beyond her pairing with Shahrukh. What sets her apart from many other actresses is her devil-may-care attitude, down to earth mannerisms & that effervescent laugh. She never acts all hoity-toity and seems very approachable.

9 star relationships that survived Bollywood

2012-06-07T23:18:00.001-07:00

Kajol & Ajay Devgn (13 years) Kajol & Ajay are a perfect example of the ‘opposites attract’ saying. While Kajol is all chirpy and jolly, Ajay is known to be serious and broody. But they have managed to make their differences complement each other. Kajol was head over heels in love with Ajay and married him at the peak of her career. 2 kids later, they are still as happy as they were earlier.

Twinkle & Akshay Kumar (11 years) Akshay was a known Casanova who dated a string of actresses from Raveena Tandon to Shilpa Shetty but refused to settle with anyone; well only till Twinkle came along. They met on the sets of the film 'International Khiladi' and tied the knot soon after. Though everybody thought that this marriage would break apart very soon due to Akshay's playboy nature, it stood the test of time. Twinkle's second pregnancy has put a stop to all the rumors about their marriage falling apart.

Saira & Dilip Kumar (46 years) Saira Bano is 22 years younger than Dilip Kumar but age never came in the way of them enjoying a blissful married life. Their marriage has weathered all storms and not even once have we seen them drifting away from each other. They are as much in love as they were at the beginning of their relationship and are a perfect example of love stays young forever. They are still together and we wish them many more years of togetherness.

Gauri & Shahrukh Khan (21 years) This is Bollywood’s ‘it’ couple. It is quite well known how much Shah Rukh had to struggle to woo Gauri and then had to struggle even more to convince her parents for the marriage. During the times when even inter-caste marriages were frowned upon, they wanted to get married in spite of their religious differences. True love eventually triumphed; they got married and now are proud parents of a son and a daughter. While most other actors got embroiled in various love affairs, Shah Rukh was never linked-up with anybody until now. Their marriage was seen as rock solid until Shah Rukh’s alleged affair with Priyanka Chopra came to light. Even though the married couple is still very much together, little cracks have started to show. We can only hope that this marriage weathers all storms and remains intact.

Avantika & Imraan Khan (10 years) Although this couple got married only last year, they have been together since the past 10 years and deserve to be on the list for their sheer faithfulness towards each other. They have been together since a very young age and in spite of the industry they are in, have managed to keep their relationship alive and away from controversies. A young couple in today’s age showing such commitment is definitely commendable and worth emulating.

Jaya & Amitabh Bacchhan (39 years) Jaya got married to Amitabh at the peak of her successful career while he was still struggling to get a foothold in the industry. The marriage proved lucky for Amitabh and he became a super star. Although there was trouble in their marriage due to Amitabh’s alleged link-up with Rekha but Jaya like a dutiful wife supported her husband and now they have a perfect family with both their kids happily married.

Malaika & Arbaaz Khan (14 years) Malaika was a name to reckon with as a model, VJ and an item dancer, while Arbaaz was best known as Salman’s brother. But their successes or failures didn’t stand a chance in front of their love for each other. They are the perfect modern couple with Arbaaz being perfectly at ease with Malaika being more successful and each giving the other ample space. They have a son together and are in love as much as ever.

. Neetu & Rishi Kapoor (32 years) Neetu Singh married Rishi at the tender age of 22. They were one of the most popular couples of their time. Rishi was a heartthrob, a trait he passed on to his son, and Neetu was also a successful actress. Though they had problems in their marriage due to Rishi’s excessive drinking habit, they withstood the storm and managed to keep their marriage intact.

Mard Ko Dard again

2012-06-05T18:54:00.003-07:00

The title track of 'Bol Bachchan' has Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan rendering their vocals to the song coupled with some famous one-liners from Bachchan's films.(By-Yahoo Movie)

The title track from Rohit Shetty’s ‘Bol Bachchan’ has some of Big B’s cult dialogues has been doing the rounds for a while now. The track which features Amitabh Bachchan along with Ajay Devgn and Abhishek Bachchan is a peppy and fun song. The track which is also sung by the trio has a number of Big B’s famous one-liners which are being mouthed by none other than Bachchan Jr. Abhishek has added his own flavour to iconic lines like “Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota” and “Daaru Peene Se Liver Kharab Hota Hai”.

The song from Bachchan’s earlier hit sees him popping out of a life-sized egg and the same scene will be replicated for 'Bol Bachchan' title track video as well. AB has rendered his vocals for the track and the song will also feature some of his evergreen iconic dialogues from 'Amar Akbar Anthony' and other films.

This is the first time that these three actors have come together for a song and their chemistry is definitely something to look out for. Ajay Devgn stays true to his character in the movie and translates the Hindi one-liners into his style of broken English which gets you laughing your guts out.

Top 10 saddest break-ups in Bollywood

2012-06-02T20:29:00.001-07:00

1. Salman Khan & Aishwarya Rai

This can be easily termed as Bollywood’s worst break-up of all time. Ash and Salman got close while filming Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and their chemistry was for all to see. But Salman’s hot temper led them calling it splits and very publicly. Apparently Salman was very possessive of Ash which didn’t go down very well with her. There were reports of him hitting her, assaulting people and barging on film sets which got too much for the lady to handle. Salman then moved on to Katrina Kaif but is single again. Ash also moved on and got in a relationship with Vivek Oberoi and practically ended up ruining his life and career. Vivek got into public spats with Salman but, to his dismay, Ash decided to move on to Abhishek Bacchhan rather than supporting him. Ash is now married to AB's baby and mother to baby Aaradhya.

10. Aamir Khan & Reena Datta

Aamir married Reena even before his first, and superhit, movie QSQT released. He revealed his marital status only after the release of the movie. They had 2 kids and, for 16 long years, Reena stuck with him through all his alleged link-ups with other women. Apparently, the cracks started appearing long before they actually split and Aamir’s closeness with Kiran Rao, then the asst. director of 'Lagaan', acted as the last straw. According to Reena, Aamir is a closet womaniser. Whatever be the case, Aamir is now happily married to Kiran and even has a son with her. As for Reena, well, she is just another Bollywood ex-wife.

9. Saif Ali Khan & Amrita Singh

Saif married Amrita Singh, 5 years his senior in a secret ceremony and dropped the bomb on his parents only later. This odd relationship was talked about initially but not for long when people saw them happily married with 2 kids in tow. But who knew this happy couple would head for splitsville after a few years. Saif has since moved on to a stable relationship with Kareena while Amrita is just another has-been actor and an ex-wife, who we truly feel sad for.

8. Amitabh Bacchhan & Rekha

This couple was/is the most mysterious of all. They never admitted to being a couple but it was alleged that Silsila was inspired by the real life love triangle between Amitabh, Jaya & Rekha. But if they never were a couple how come they don’t even acknowledge each others’ presence anymore. As they say, there is no smoke without fire. Maybe this is one story that will never be out in the open.

7. Ness Wadia & Preity Zinta

Ness & Preity were quite a happy couple and struck the perfect pose for the shutterbugs wherever they went. Just when everybody thought they would tie the knot, they called it quits. Nobody quite knows the reason behind the split but the duo has handled it quite gracefully. They still are partners in the IPL team Kings XI Punjab and continue to attend IPL meetings together.

6. Ranbir Kapoor & Deepika Padukone

This couple was another high profile one. They made efforts to keep their relationship under wraps but couldn’t do so for long as everybody saw through their facade. Their every move started making headlines, from Deepika’s RK tattoo to their airport kiss. But, apparently, Mummy Kapoor wasn't too happy with this union, and Ranbir being the mama’s boy that he is, happily broke up with this leggy lass. Deepika later revealed on 'Koffee with Karan' that he cheated on her and took digs at him, which definitely made for some saucy viewing.

5. Abhishek Bacchhan & Karisma Kapoor

Abhishek & Karisma both come from big Bollywood families and resultantly their engagement made headlines. They officially got engaged in a grand affair on the occasion of Amitabh’s 60th birthday. Sadly, the engagement was even more short-lived than Abhishek’s successful filmy career. After announcing their split, they left everybody wondering about the reason for the same. Apparently Jaya didn’t approve of Karisma for a reason known best to her and her family. There was another rumor that the relationship couldn’t bear the interfering nature of Karisma’s mother, Babita. Well, all that’s in the past now. Abhishek is married to Aishwarya and recently became a father while Karisma is also enjoying matrimony with Sanjay Kapur and her 2 kids.

4. Kelly Dorjee & Lara Dutta

This relationship was an inspiration to those in Bollywood and even otherwise. This 12 year long relationship abruptly came to an end and no one could understand why. Kelly & Lara had been a couple since their modelling days and while Lara went on to become a successful actress after winning the Miss Universe crown, Kelly’s Bollywood career never took off. Allegedly Lara’s attraction towards Dino Morea was the reason for the split. In fact Kelly openly admitted to Stardust magazine that Dino Morea shouldn’t have done what he did, leaving no secrets barred. Well, Lara is now happily married to tennis player Mahesh Bhupathi & is a proud mommy while Kelly is hardly seen anywhere.

3. Shahid Kapur & Kareena Kapoor

This was one of the most popular relationships, when it was going on and even when it wasn’t. These young Kap(u)oors were the talk of the town what with their mms scandal and inseparable appearances. They were one of the stable couples and had been going out for 3-4 years. Their sudden break-up came as a shock to everybody. Nobody knows the clear reason but if rumours are to be believed, Kareena’s closeness with saif during the filming of Tashan led to their break-up. We would’ve loved to see them together but fate had other plans and Kareena is now busy making wedding preps with Saif.

2. John Abraham & Bipasha Basu

This couple is the most recent one to succumb to a break-up. John & Bipasha had been going rock solid for almost 10 years when reports of their break-up surfaced. Bipasha indirectly stated that John was cheating on her which led to their break-up. Guess even the most solid of relationships cannot hold their own against the pressures of Bollywood. John is currently dating Priya Runchal (an investment banker) while Bipasha is happily single (or not if her reported link-ups are to be believed).
