Recently, after becoming a mother, Yami appeared in a new OTT film Dhoom Dhaam alongside Pratik Gandhi, which was released on Valentine’s Day, February 14. The film received great appreciation from the audience.

On Wednesday, February 26, Yami Gautam organized a press conference where she openly discussed the success of her films. She also answered questions from media personnel, particularly mentioning her films Article 370 and Dhoom Dhaam, along with other notable projects. Let’s take a look at what she had to say.

What would you like to say to the media?

“I would first like to tell the media that you’ve always complained about me not appearing much in front of the camera. But it's great that we meet through films. I didn’t get much chance to be in front of the media through my films, but I’m grateful to the audience for showing their trust in me and always giving me opportunities to do something new. As for my personal life, I became a mother last year, and during this time, I embarked on a new journey. Now, I am here to thank everyone for being part of this journey.”

With Women’s Day coming up, and given that you’ve portrayed strong female characters in many of your films, what message would you give to women? Also, how do you select your strong female roles?

“I don’t know what message I can give, but I would say that we (women) are incredibly strong and capable. Our strength lies within us – we possess love, anger, forgiveness, patience – everything. We need to believe in ourselves, and every woman, no matter where she is, whether in any city or state, deserves appreciation and respect. We should spread the message of women’s empowerment, and it’s not necessary to fight for it; just believing in ourselves is enough. As an actor, whenever I get the chance, I try to portray women in a positive light, and if we get that opportunity, why not embrace it?”

You don’t release five or six films a year; you only do one or two films, but the roles you choose are award-winning. Do you choose films based on the script, or do you only want to do award-winning roles?

“In recent years, I’ve had many great opportunities, like A Thursday, Uri, Bala, Dasvi, Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga, Article 370, OMG, and now Dhoom Dhaam. I’ve never aimed to do more films. Earlier, when I was asked if I was very picky, I would keep looking for work, but now, I am looking for great scripts and quality work. That’s a big difference. It’s a matter of time, and I understand the importance of that time. It was very important for me to learn what not to do and what to do. It’s essential to keep motivating yourself and remember how far you’ve come because the journey ahead is long, with so much to learn and do.”

You’re not just entertaining, but also portraying strong, impactful, and deep characters. How do you balance this? In today’s time, if you choose a contrasting role, people criticize. How do you choose these roles and play them with full sincerity and belief?

“When I finish reading a script, I close my eyes for a moment and try to hear the first voice that comes to my mind. I don’t get affected by criticism because I know that this happens in every industry. Whether people like me or not, I don’t take it personally. I just try to do my work sincerely and always aim to stay true to myself as an artist. The way I read scripts hasn’t changed, but now I prefer bound scripts because I find it hard to understand on an iPad.”

Social media has a huge impact now, and there’s a high level of promotion for new actors or star kids. However, you’ve done great work, like Article 370, Dhoom Dhaam, and OMG, but these films don’t get that much promotion. Do you feel promotion is important, and why don’t you focus on it?

“I think everyone has their own personality, and it’s important to present yourself the right way. As I always say, I’ve read interviews of many great actors, and now I understand what it means to stay true to yourself. If you achieve success by becoming someone else, and if a producer or director casts me based on my social media presence, I might not be right for that role. I want to create an image, or rather a name, where I’m recognized for my work. I’ve come this far as Yami, and I want to continue growing as Yami.”

Your films have always done well at the box office. Does the number matter to you?

“Yes, if a film performs well at the box office, it means the audience has watched it. Take Article 370, for example – it’s not the kind of film that people watch easily. It doesn’t have any songs, and there’s nothing sexual in it. But if it still works, it’s a big deal.”

“A film doesn’t just have actors; music directors, directors, editors, and background score all matter. Now, before I get to know the hero of my film, I know about all these people.”

In the last five years, we’ve seen your success, which is not just for Bollywood but personally as well. What would you like to say about this?

“Personally, becoming a mother is the most beautiful feeling, and I can’t express it in words. It’s a feeling that can only be felt in the heart. Every time I leave home for work, it gets harder, but I hope that when my child grows up and sees both of us working, they will be proud of us.”

On June 3, 1997, a massive fire broke out while people were watching the movie 'Border' at Uphaar Cinema in Green Park, South Delhi. The police arrested Uphaar Cinema owner Sushil Ansal and his son Pranav Ansal from Mumbai.

When the judges admired her for her work, she quipped that she wouldn't miss the opportunity to hang out with 'desis' ever. She said, "I'm always hanging out with FBI guys and police officers. When do I get to be like this? I'm happy."

The judges then said that she has got an amazing sense of humour, to which she replied, "I have the darkest sense of humour, and some get it, some don't, but I don't care. It's because of the things that I see. I've had a five-year-old girl die in my arms in the hospital because she was raped many times. And I've had a baby girl that was raped die in my arms. So if I don't have a dark sense of humour, I will not be mentally well. I need therapy once a week because I need an outlet for what I see every day. Because I see the worst of humanity, but then I see the good in humanity when I see people donate, and they care. And it gives me hope."

"I am continuing No More Tears because it is my only purpose every morning. I know we will survive, and No More Tears will never die," she added, and further said that even if someone is donating ten dollars to five dollars, it adds up to save lives.

Somy Ali on Motherhood: 'No More Tears Kids Are Mine'

"A woman with a baby in her arms struggles to find enough to feed her child. For me, motherhood was never just about having children—it was about creating a better world for them. At 23, my biggest dream was to get married and have kids. My brother always told me, ‘Somy, if anyone in this world should be a mother, it’s you.’ Though I never became a mother in the traditional sense, I have no regrets. The children at No More Tears are my children. They call me ‘Somy Mommy,’ and that love is more than enough—I have more children than I ever imagined, and I have more coming," she said.

Somy further mentioned that all the kids that come to No More Tears are broken and she has to fix them which in a way helps her heal. "I remember my mother's words, where she always said that when I was going through a bad phase, I wished Somy and her No More Tears were there. And that's what keeps me going. That's the only thing that keeps me going," she ended.

Prakash Jha is one of the few directors of Indian cinema who has brought the ground reality of society to the big screen very well. Famous for making films on political, social, and criminal subjects, Jha is not only a skilled director but also a great producer, writer, and actor. On the occasion of his birthday (Prakash Jha Birthday), we take a look at his life, career, and achievements.

Early life and education

Prakash Jha was born on 27 February 1952 in Bettiah in the West Champaran district of Bihar. His family was traditionally involved in farming, but Jha was always interested in studies and art. He completed his early education from Bettiah, after which he came to Delhi. His initial interest was in science, so he started studying physics at Ramjas College of Delhi University.

However, after some time, he started losing interest in science and moved to Mumbai, where he took admission in J.J. School of Arts. But fate had something else in store for him. One day he visited Mumbai's Film City Studio and this is where he developed an interest in filmmaking. After this, he took admission in Pune's Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) and learned the nuances of cinema.

Beginning of film journey

Prakash Jha's career (Prakash Jha Debut Film) started with documentary films. He made a documentary called Under the Blue in 1976. After this he made Faces After the Storm , which was based on the 1984 Sikh riots. This documentary received a lot of appreciation and from here a strong foundation of Jha's directorial career was laid. His first feature film was Hip Hip Hurray (1984), which was based on the life of a school and its students. But he got real recognition from Damul (1985), which focused on the problem of bonded laborers of Bihar. This film also received a National Award and established Prakash Jha as a serious and sensitive filmmaker.

Prakash Jha's major films and social issues

The biggest specialty of Prakash Jha's films is that he never hesitates to bring out the real issues. His films not only entertain but also show a mirror to the society.

1. Mrityudand (1997)

The story of Madhu (Madhuri Dixit), Keshav (Om Puri) and Abhay (Ayub Khan) depicts the struggle for women's rights and against patriarchy in a small village. This film brought Jha closer to commercial cinema.

2. Gangaajal (2003)

This Ajay Devgan starrer film exposed the dark faces of Bihar's police system and politics. The film prominently depicted the practice of "acid throwing", which had become infamous in some districts of Bihar at that time.

3. Kidnapping (2005)

This film was based on the kidnapping industry and political nexus. The powerful acting of Ajay Devgan and Nana Patekar took the film to a different level.

4. Politics (2010)

Inspired by Sonia Gandhi and Mahabharata, this film exposed the realities of Indian politics. Starring Ranbir Kapoor, Ajay Devgan, Manoj Bajpayee, Arjun Rampal, and Katrina Kaif, this film was a huge box office success.

5. Satyagraha (2013)

This film starring Amitabh Bachchan, Ajay Devgan, Kareena Kapoor and Arjun Rampal was inspired by Anna Hazare's movement. The fight against corruption was shown in the film.

6. Jai Gangaajal (2016)

Priyanka Chopra starrer this film shows the situation of women police officers. This film was also made on the lines of Gangaajal.

Web Series and OTT Debut

Prakash Jha (Prakash Jha Ott Series) has also made his mark on the OTT platform. His web series Ashram (2020) on MX Player created a stir. The character of Baba Nirala played by Bobby Deol was well liked by the audience. This series exposes a fake religious guru and his hypocrisy. After the success of Ashram , its second and third season also came and now preparations are underway for the fourth season. 

Tried his hand in politics too

Like films, Prakash Jha has also been interested in politics. He also contested the Lok Sabha elections from Bettiah in Bihar in 2014, although he could not win.

private life 

Prakash Jha was married to famous actress Deepti Naval (Prakash Jha wife). Deepti Naval has been a popular actress of the 80s and 90s, who has worked in many art films and films based on social issues. However, Prakash Jha and Deepti Naval's marriage did not last long and later both got divorced (Prakash Jha Divorce). They have a daughter Disha Jha (Prakash Jha Daughter) from their marriage, who is associated with film production. However, even after the divorce, Prakash Jha and Deepti Naval maintained a good friendly relationship. Deepti Naval has said many times in interviews that they still respect each other and have a cordial relationship. Prakash Jha did not remarry and he remained fully engaged in his film career and social work.

Last Project

'Rafuchakkar' is a web series produced by Prakash Jha. It is a thrilling crime-thriller series, which shows topics like money laundering and fraud. Actors Manvi Gagroo and Gaurav Sharma were seen in the lead roles in this series. The series was released on JioCinema and received a good response from the audience. However, Prakash Jha did not direct it, but produced it. Prakash Jha is usually known for films and web series based on political and social issues, and 'Rafuchakkar' was also in the news as an interesting crime drama. What is the secret behind your fitness? You always look so fit.

The secret to my fitness is that I take very good care of myself. I do a lot of things to maintain my health. My day begins with asking myself what I can do today to keep my body fit, both externally and internally. Since last year, my goal has been that when I meet anyone after 2025, they’ll say, “Esha is so fit.” I recently met a foreign footballer who is 37, but he has maintained his body so well. Your song with Honey Singh, 'Maniac', is trending on YouTube and has created a buzz. What do you think about it?

All the credit for this song goes to Honey Singh. Whether you call it his comeback or not, he has always been a major figure in the industry for me. His songs have always had something unique, and he proved that again with this track. No one could have imagined that this song would feature Bhojpuri, alongside English lyrics. Perhaps that's why Honey Singh is called the King of Pop.

How do you feel about Honey Singh’s new avatar?

Esha Gupta: Honey Singh is as wonderful a person on the inside as he is on the outside. His personality and his music reflect that. His music is powerful, and even when he says just one or two lines, they have an impact.

When Honey Singh approached you for this song, what was going through your mind?

Whenever we used to party, Honey Singh’s songs would play. I’ve been a fan since he performed at my brother Karan Gupta ’s wedding, and from that moment, I knew I wanted to work with him. When this song came to me, and I was told that it needed to be shot in just two days, I agreed immediately because it was with Honey Singh. The song has Bhojpuri words, and if you look at the choreography and our look, everything is thanks to the production house. Our choreographers did a fantastic job, and they managed to shoot the entire song in just two days. I’ll also tell you this: I was even practicing the hook step of the song while sleeping!

You had a lot of fun while shooting the song, and even drove cars in it. Can you tell us more about your experience while shooting this?

The best part of shooting this song was how work and fun blended together. Honey Singh brought such a great vibe to the set. He’s really chill when he works, even though we knew the deadlines. Despite that, we were able to finish our work on time, while still having fun in a relaxed, enjoyable atmosphere.

The song features a mix of Bhojpuri, Punjabi, and English. What’s your take on this unique blend?

I think it’s a super cool concept to mix Bhojpuri, Punjabi, and English in a single song. If you go international, you'll see many concepts where multiple languages are used. We never thought something like this would happen in India, but Honey Singh has made it happen. His recent concept was a total blast.

Can you tell us about your upcoming projects? How many more songs can we expect from you?

You’ll have to wait a little for that, but yes, I can tell you that I have a few more songs coming this year.

This experience has deeply impacted me. The philosophical time with the Sadhus at the Kumbh Mela taught me that the soul is not identified by its physical form but by the light within it. When I lived among the Sadhus and saw myself without any artificiality, I found that true meditation and service can only be found in one's true form.

The more I was with the sadhus, the more I felt their simplicity and spirituality filled me with a new energy. Being there, I discovered the true happiness of life – the happiness that lies not in material things, but in soulful relationships and love.

When I met people at the fair, the expressions in their eyes were amazing. There was hope, faith, and love in their expressions. I understood that the real purpose of a Sadhu is to spread light not just for oneself but also for others. That is why I gave the money I received for my blessings to my Guru because I believe that it is only through his grace and blessings that we get real happiness in life.

I also want this experience of mine to be an inspiration for other people, so that they too understand the spirit of Sadhutva in their life and adopt it. We all have a divinity, which we need to recognize and develop. As far as my music journey is concerned, I want to reach the hearts of more people through my songs.

Now, I believe that my words and my songs will be able to spread love and positivity in the world. I may present myself as a Saint, but I also know that my place is still on the stage — where I can create a new light through my music.

When asked about their collaboration and how the duo clicked with audiences, Akshara explained, "When I first came up with this song, I was in the studio. As soon as it was time to think about who should feature in the song, Vishal’s face immediately came to mind. I called him, and he agreed right away."

She continued, "As a producer, you always feel a bit nervous when creating a new song, wondering whether it will be successful or not. So, I decided to play it for Vishal, and he loved it. After that, we went on set, and the experience was amazing. By the way, we shot this song in Banaras, and it was so much fun."

Vishal added, "Akshara and I had talked about collaborating on a song before, but it didn’t work out then. Now, I’m glad it did. I also want to mention that Akshara’s mother is one of my favorite actresses, and we get along really well. I thought this collaboration would be refreshing for me. I’ve mostly worked in Hindi, but Akshara is a big star in UP-Bihar. I’ve known her for a while, and doing this song together felt like the right move. It’s like when you’re living abroad, and you miss your home country's festivals — that’s how I felt about this song."

When asked how they celebrate Holi, Vishal shared, "I celebrate Holi with my friends. If bhang is available, I drink it and then enjoy some good food before sleeping. Festivals are best enjoyed with loved ones."

Akshara, on the other hand, shared, "I don’t like working or staying in Mumbai during Holi. I prefer to celebrate it the way I did as a child. I usually go to Patna, Banaras, or Vrindavan. If I meet some friends in Mumbai, that’s great, but the real fun of Holi is in Purvanchal."

Thoughts on the Bhojpuri Industry

During the event, Vishal also spoke about the potential of the Bhojpuri industry, saying, "I believe that the Bhojpuri industry can do a lot of great work. Our cinema will take some time, but it will get there." Akshara added, "If big names and investments come into our industry, it will thrive even more. In fact, according to a Bollywood Hungama report, Siddhant Chaturvedi and Tripti Dimri's film Dhadak 2 is facing problems with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) as it shows caste discrimination. This could lead to a possible delay in the film's release. The film Dhadak 2 which was scheduled to release in November 2024 has been postponed to 2025. There were rumors that it would hit theatres during the Holi weekend in March. However, with Holi just a few weeks away, the film's promotional activities have not started yet.

Dhadak 2 Faces CBFC Hurdles: Uncertain March 14 Release

According to reports, the CBFC has concerns over some scenes and dialogues dealing with caste issues in Dhadak 2. The board members liked the film, but they are unsure about what rating to give it and whether any scenes need to be cut. A source said that the filmmakers are waiting for the film to get certification from the CBFC before starting its promotion. If the film gets the approval, it will release on March 14 as scheduled. If this does not happen, the release may be postponed.

'Girls Will Be Girls' created history by winning the prestigious John Cassavetes Award at the 2025 Film Independent Spirit Awards. It has become the first Indian film to receive this honor, which is considered one of the world's most prestigious Awards and is a major achievement for Indian cinema. The award is given every year to the best films whose budget is less than $ 1 million, and 'Girls Will Be Girls' made their special place among all the contenders.

You both made the finest independent film 'Girls Will Be Girls that is the first Indian film to have created a history of winning the Prestigious John Cassavetes Award at the 2025 Film Independent Spirits Award?

Richa: Really, this victory is like a dream come true. I feel very proud that we made a film like Girls Will Be Girls. This is not just mine, but the victory of the entire team, who trusted this story. It is very special for me to get this honor as an independent cinema maker and an Indian artist. This indeed is an achievement, this award is given to the best films that are less than one million dollars and girls will be girls have made it's special place among all the contenders. You all know. We work hard, believe in the story. Leave the rest to the viewers. We were just hoping that people could assimilate the essence of 'Girls Will B Girls' and the response received was overwhelming . It was such a response like the world said, "We are seeing you, we understand you."

Ali: Yes, this victory is very important for us and for Indian cinema. The real essence of independent cinema is to present the truth without any fear, no matter how difficult it is. We have to do it right. This is a story of breaking boundaries, feeling liberal and making history, and I am proud to be a part of this film. "

It is as if you plant a little seed, and one day it turns into a beautiful tree. We knew that the vision of Shuchi (Talati , director) was special, but to see it blooming like this… it is magical.

So, this is 'John CassavetesAward,' and  it is for the best small budgeted films, right? Less than a million dollars. How was it to make such a film?

Richa: (Smiling) This is like creating a divine painting with limited colors. You have to be both creative and resourceful. We had a wonderful team, everyone was very enthusiastic. We shot in beautiful places, but it was not always easy. We had to spend every rupee smartly.

Ali: Absolutely. You no, it is made with heartfelt enthusiasm not expensive equipment. We focused on the story, characters. We have artists like Kani Kushruti, Preeti Panigrahi and Keshav Binoy Kiran, and they were all amazing in the lead roles. They filled such authenticity in their role.

Richa, you are the first Indian actor and producer to win this award. This is a big thing, right?

Richa: (Richa smiles, she looked very beautiful while smiling) This is definitely overwhelming But it's is not just my victory. It is the victory for every storyteller, every filmmaker who dare to dream big with limited resources. This is for all women who want to tell their stories.

Ali, You and Richa produced this film. How was it to work by stepping out of the camera zone?

Ali: This is a different feeling, as an actor, you focus on your character. As a producer, you pay attention to large canvas. You are making sure that it proves to be one of India's best-coming off-edge and female-centric films. It's vision of every frame remains true. It was a learning experience, and it was also very satisfactory.

"Girls Will Be Girls" is the story of a young girl who is searching for her identity and adolescent age related desires at a boarding school. This is a very real, honest story. But why did you decide to tell this story?

Richa: Because these stories should be told. We need to talk about adolescents, growing up, and complexities of being a woman. We wanted to show that these experiences are universal, that girls from all over the world face the same things.

Ali: It is the story of understanding the stereotypes and making a decision of right and wrong. This story is a sign of  development in Indian cinema. We are telling real, relevant stories.

What do you expect from "Girls Will Be Girls" and what do you think people will learn?

Richa: I hope everyone watches this film. I hope they understand that it is okay to be incomplete and it is okay to make mistakes. I want this film to encourage conversation, especially between mothers and daughters.

Ali: I hope that  young filmmakers gets inspired to tell their stories, no matter how small or big. I hope this film can show what is the place of Indian cinema on the world stage.

So, what is the next step for your house production, 'pushing button studios'?

Richa: (Smiling) We have some new plans. We want to continue to tell meaningful, impressive stories. We want to support new voices, new talents.

Ali: We have already started. We are excited about the future.

This victory is a very big moment for Indian cinema. What does this mean for the future of independent films? 

Richa: This means that if the vision is right, the story is powerful, the acting is super and direction is done correctly, then we can compete with the best in the world. This means that we can tell our stories in our own way.

Ali: This also means that we are breaking the obstacles. This means that we are opening doors to new generation filmmakers. This means that the honest and sensitive story of the film has touched the audience deeply. This is not just an award, but the confirmation of the story we wanted to bring to the world. It  is a loving project, and it is an incredible feeling for us to be appreciated in this way. "(Ali also said that he and his wife Richa have been good friends for a long time, and in an artistic form of this friendship It is very special for them.

One of the most special things of this big winning ceremony is - - one of the winners of other big categories included Anora and Jesse Eisenberg's  A Real Pain. The Film Independent Spirit Awards are known to honor the excellent work of independent cinema, and the historic victory of girls will be girls reflects the global identity of Indian cinema. 

It is important to understand many aspects related to the ideology of Richa Chadha and Ali Fazal. Their inspiration and unity are reflected not only in their work but also in their perspective.
