New Bolton Valley Uphill Policy For 2019-20 Season

To our beloved uphilling friends,

Wow, what a few years it’s been for our backcountry programs here at Bolton Valley. We’ve watched this community grow and thrive from a small group of dedicated folks to a burgeoning community of alpine touring skiers and splitboarders. Most mornings we see a steady stream of ants marching up the hill to snag first turns and a quick workout before work. Some days we bask in the glory of our uphillers and downhillers sharing the alpine terrain in harmony during lift operating hours. And it’s so fun to see the train of headlamps heading up after work in the mid-winter and to bump into friends at the top of Wilderness or Timberline in the spring to catch the sunset out across the Adirondacks.

Bolton Valley has a proud tradition of pioneering growth within the sport. Years ago as skiers and riders sought out fresh tracks, we were amongst the first to really embrace in bounds gladed trails on our trail maps. Now we aim to blaze a similar trail with respect to our uphill and backcountry community.

We’re asking for your support as we update our uphill policy in advance of the 2019-20 winter season. Starting next season, all uphill traffic will need either a lift ticket or season pass (all access season pass or backcountry/nordic/uphill pass) to be in compliance with our Uphill Trail Policy. This will include before, during, and after lift operations. Acknowledging that we don’t have a ticket window at all times, you will be able to purchase the appropriate uphill ticket or nordic/backcountry/uphill season’s pass on your phone anytime.

Additionally, we’ve heard from several of our regular uphill skiers and riders, that wish they could access the terrain off Vista Peak. We are looking for an appropriate uphill route to get you there. And while we can’t promise we’ll find it in time for next season, we are really excited to announce that starting in 2019-2020, every nordic/backcountry/uphill season pass will come with 3 one ride lift tickets. These tickets can be used all at once to bring 2 friends or take 3 separate trips yourself throughout the season.

Our mountain operations team works tirelessly day and night to keep our parking lots clear and to groom and maintain our trails. As interest in in-bounds uphilling grows, it has a corresponding impact on our day to day mountain operations. Some mornings, most of the upper base and Timberline parking lots are nearly full with backcountry enthusiasts. That makes our mountain hearts sing! It’s clear to us that in order to fully embrace this exciting evolution in our sport, it’s time to look for support from our uphill friends.

At Bolton Valley, we are all about access to the mountain and we are so grateful to be a part of this human powered, uphill revolution. As we look to the future, we are committed to offering a quality resort experience for both uphill and downhill skiers and riders every day at Bolton Valley.

Bolton Valley Backcountry Report - 3/5/2019

I got out for a quick tour this afternoon with a friend, and got a little sampling of how our snow is holding up on south- and west-facing slopes. As the sun rises higher and shines longer every day, our south-facing terrain is continuing to build a layer of sun crust, which in some places is now fully supportive. This crust was covered by snow from the storm on Sunday night, as well as the snow squalls that rolled through yesterday, and that really helped the skiing on south-facing lines. West-facing terrain has a bit of the same crust but with less strength, and after being buried under the new snow it skied very nicely. That new snow layer is anywhere from 2-8” deep depending on elevation and wind exposure. Like usual at this time of year, north-facing lines in the BV backcountry are keeping the snow cold and dry while everything else starts to warm up.

What is unusual this year is the snowpack depth; even without the epic storms of the past two seasons (cross your fingers!) there is more snow on the ground here than I have ever seen. This is really opening up the terrain as the bushes become increasingly buried, and I am seeing new lines every time I head into the backcountry. Now that the days are getting longer and the temperatures are a little more mild, it’s a great time of year to explore. Grab a friend, make a plan, and go find your new favorite backcountry line!

Saturday’s bright sun and warm temps made for some amazing ski touring conditions, and my crew and I all worked on our sun tans while we skied creamy south-facing lines. However, all that solar energy really thickened up the snowpack. Now that temperatures have fallen again, I expect that south-facing aspects are going to have a significant breakable sun crust. Our north-facing terrain is still staying shaded all day long and the snow there is dry and soft. With the addition of a few inches on Sunday and a few more last night, all the terrain that doesn’t have direct exposure to the sun should be skiing great. Ridgetops have become pretty scoured by all the high wind, but you only have to drop 30 feet before you are back into the good snow. With cold temperatures and high winds in the forecast for the next two days, you probably don’t want to be exposed up on the ridges anyways! Stay safe out there!

First Day in the Bolton Valley Backcountry

I’ve always been drawn to the backcountry. The solitude. The promise of deep powder. The sense of accomplishment after an uphill battle.

I’ve been waiting to get into the backcountry for years. I started snowboarding six years ago in the small hills of the Poconos. Most of my riding consisted of 45-second runs and the occasional trip to Vermont. My only knowledge of the backcountry was what I had seen in ski films.

The backcountry was something that I had reserved in my mind for professional skiers, and it wasn’t until I came to the University of Vermont that I realized it was as normal as taking a hike in the woods.

Then, one day, I discovered Bolton Valley. A mountain that had a killer local atmosphere but featured access to some awesome terrain. It felt like home - it made me feel comfortable enough to push myself. First, into the trees and then finally, the backcountry.

I arrived this past Saturday to my internship with the Marketing Department at Bolton Valley, expecting to spend the day in the office helping out with events and taking a few laps on the groomers. But to my surprise, the Director of Marketing, Scott Pelligrini, had a different idea for the day.

After the recent snowfall, he proposed that we head out to the backcountry and do an intro to splitboarding day. The stars had aligned! An immense feeling of excitement and nerves came over me. Before I knew it, we were on our way to the rental shop getting me fitted with a rental for the day.

Let me tell you, the Bolton Valley Nordic and Backcountry center HOOKED it up! I was fortunate enough to ride on a Weston Backcountry splitboard - specifically, the Riva. The Riva is Weston Backcountry’s first women-specific board and features a rocker-camber-rocker profile. It was equipped with Spark bindings and Pomoca skins. It was a BEAUTIFUL set-up. Scott took the time to teach me how to properly set-up my board and bindings, so I was starting to get familiar with the gear and understanding how it worked.

After making it out onto the snow, Scott showed me the importance of having your “curved-edges facing in” and I took this time to admire my set-up. This was really happening. I was about to take my snowboarding ability to the next level.

We spent the next few minutes talking about the route that we were planning on taking. It was just a short uphill to Wilderness through the trees - the perfect intro to splitboarding.

The first few steps were rocky. It was a different sensation that I had previously not experienced, but as we made our way into the woods, the only sensation that mattered was how I felt being in those woods.

It was a whole new world - seeing the immense amount of untouched snow wrapping the trees like a warm blanket. There was only silence and the trees to keep us company as we made our ascent.

As we got further up the mountain, we decided to take a longer route.

This new route would feature an ascent up Gardiner’s Lane to Bryant Camp and then up Heavenly Highway to Wilderness. I don’t think either of us were expecting it to be as long as it was, but we were both excited to be in the woods.

The route featured a series of uphill battles as we traversed further up the mountain. Luckily, I was with a trusty guide who was determined to get us up and down in one piece. As we made our way up, the change in elevation was becoming more and more apparent.

We were no longer traversing along a defined flat track. At times, we would be on narrow route almost vertical to the mountain. It was not only physically challenging but also mentally. In situations like these, it is so important to trust who you are with and also the gear you are riding. I had confidence in both and was able to push through even when the going got tough.

Once we made it to the top, I couldn’t believe it. I was proud of myself for keeping my morale high even when it was not the easiest thing I could’ve been doing on a Saturday afternoon. I’m so glad I had the opportunity though, because it has opened up this whole new world for me. I can’t wait to get back out there and start really diving deeper into the backcountry and forcing myself to progress as a rider.

Deadline: Strength and Conditioning Classes

Here we are people. Almost to the end of fall, and to the beginning of winter. The leaves are so close to being done for the season and soon there will be this silent lull at the mountain until the lifts start churning. Well, that is unless you sign up for this awfully rad 6 week preseason workout class aimed at getting you prepped for the gnarliest season of your life.

Tomorrow (10/25) is the last day you are eligible to register for classes.

The class will be taught by BV local and fitness professional Colleen Perry. Colleen has been working as a personal trainer and group fitness instructor with clients for over 10 years in a variety of fitness modalities. She enjoys working with all levels of fitness from beginners to elite athletes. Colleen will encourage and motivate each participant to perform to their personal best while creating a safe and fun environment to accomplish this goal. The 60 minute class will meet twice a week for 6 consecutive weeks and be offered right at The Bolton Valley Nordic Center.

Hello Folks,

I have been a skier and rider at Bolton Valley for the past 12 years. This is my first year working here and so far I can't think of a better place to work. The people I have met so far in my first month here have been friendly and welcoming. To be employed in what is my neighborhood ski area only to find that the people are just as cool as when I was a guest leaves me excited and giddy for the winter. I live in Burlington and the highway makes it an easy cruise to and from the mountain. Summer Dining and Activities

Winters at Bolton Valley are pretty busy with skiers and riders joining us day and night. Summers, however, have been relatively quiet for the past few years.

But that is now changing.

As you may have heard the DesLauriers family is back at the helm at Bolton Valley and highly involved in the community, they actually live slopeside in the Bolton Valley neighborhood. With the return to owners who live and work here, we are excited to introduce expanded dining and activities this summer.

Let’s start with food. New this summer, a hot breakfast will be served Tuesday – Sunday in Bailey’s, with Sunday featuring a brunch menu. The deli will fill in for breakfast on Mondays and will be open seven days per week for lunch, featuring sandwiches and wraps as well as an expanded selection of grab and go items and groceries.

Gather for dinner with the neighborhood five nights per week. Tuesday through Thursday the James Moore Tavern will feature appetizers, salads, sandwiches, burgers, and a selection of entrees. Friday and Saturday, catch the game on the big projection television in Fireside Flatbread while enjoying flatbreads, wings, salads, beers and sodas.

In addition to tasty food, every good neighborhood party needs some fun games and a pool. The Sports Center will be activity central this summer. If you ski with us in the winter you are no doubt familiar with the pool, hot tub, sauna and bounce houses located at the Sports Center. This summer, those favorite attractions will be joined by new activities such as swing set, slack line, corn hole, bocce ball, croquette, horseshoes, Can Jam and a disc golf "putting green”. You’ll even be able to gather around our bonfire and enjoy some S’Mores. Daily rates will apply and season long memberships are available. Each membership comes with a 20% discount on summer food and beverage. The Sports Center will be open Wednesdays through Sundays starting on June 25.

Ralph DesLauriers founded Bolton Valley in 1966 and ran the mountain until the late 1990’s. After a 20 year hiatus Ralph has re-purchased the mountain with his son and daughter, Evan and Lindsay DesLauriers, and a small group of local investors. The three DesLauriers family members live slopeside at Bolton Valley and we're thrilled to have the DesLauriers family back home at Bolton Valley.

Spring Events

It’s safe to say that we have had some wild weather this winter. A couple of weeks ago temps were in the 60s. Then before you know it, we got nearly 5 feet of snow. Thanks to these wild weather swings our spring event calendar has been a bit fluid.

We initially had Pond Skimming planned for April 1, but when temps were hitting 60 in early March, we started to worry that we would not have enough snow left to pull it off on April 1. So, we moved the event up to March 25 and then bumped the Banked Slalom to Sunday, March 26. March 25 and 26 is the weekend of the Spring Thing and we saw Pond Skimming as a way to pack the weekend with events and festivities.

However, since we made that call we received nearly five feet of snow, which give us confidence that we can run Pond Skimming on the weekend of April 1 and 2. Also, the forecast for this weekend, March 25, looks a bit chilly for Pond Skimming.

In an effort to let us provide the best possible day for Pond Skimming we will hold Pond Skimming on either April 1 or 2. We'll make a call and announce the final date on Tuesday, March 28 based on the forecast for the weekend.

The Banked Slalom has been moved up to Saturday, March 25 and the Snurfer Challenge will be held on Sunday, March 26.

Winter Storm Stella: 58" in 72 Hours

There are few words to describe what the past few days have been like. Winter Storm Stella rolled in with a vengeance Tuesday with copious amounts of snow. It may have passed now, but not before leaving behind a jaw-dropping 58". The Weather Channel has pegged us with the highest snow totals in the Northeast from the storm. I may be young, but personally I've never come close to experiencing the deepness of the snow and face shots that were to be had yesterday. Myths of powder that's so deep you have trouble breathing have been uttered in the James Moore Tavern before. But yesterday that myth became a reality. Don't forget that 2017-18 Season Passes are now on sale and you can ski and ride for free this season when you purchase next years pass. Check out the video below that was shot yesterday.

50th Anniversary Semi Formal

Bolton Valley first opened on Dec. 26, 1966. This season marks our 50th Anniversary and we're throwing a party. Join us at The Ponds for an evening of merriment and stories from the past 50 plus years. The party will run from 7 - 11pm and include hors d'oeuvre, live entertainment, an ice sculpture, a photo booth with vintage Bolton Valley backgrounds, and a cash bar. Catch up with old friends and swap stories about your favorite Bolton Valley memories.

The doors will open at 7pm and we'll have special guest speakers at 8pm, including Bolton Valley founder Ralph DesLauriers.

After the speakers The Detonators will take the stage after the speakers to rock the night away. The Detonators began in 1995. Rocking Vermont ski areas, street dances, functions, festivals and clubs with an unusual collection of rock, country and blues music that appeals to everyone. The band has developed its own style of tight grooves and high energy from years of performing together.

The party is $30 per person. We're looking to have a fun night out that's a little more "dressy" than regular Apres ski attire. If you'd like you can go with a tuxedo and Oscar's worthy evening gown. But a tie with jeans for the men and that little black dress for the women will work just fine.

In lieu of this, we have pushed Opening Day up by one day and will open for the season Friday, December 9. Lifts will run from 10am - 4pm with no night skiing.

While we have had two feet of snow in the past week, keep in mind that the snow fell on warm and wet ground. Water bars are still flowing and there are still plenty of thin spots. Our snowmakers are currently on a short break due to warm temperatures but will get back at it as soon as temps drop again. The mountain ops team is constantly assessing conditions and we'll have a better idea of what lifts and trails we can open by Thursday. Opening Day Set For Dec. 10

Our snowmakers and mountain ops teams have been hard at work getting the mountain ready over the past week. Snowmaking began at the top of the Vista Quad and has moved down Sherman's Pass as production has allowed. Currently we are making snow just above the top of Mid-Mountain, and will continue to work our way down the mountain as temperatures allow.

Unfortunately, we have some warm and wet weather on our way mid-week. It looks like we'll see some of that dreaded rain Tuesday-Thursday with temps ranging from the high 30's to mid 40's. Due to this weather outlook we will stick with our planned Opening Day of December 10.

Why Melting Snow in October Shouldn't Bother You

Seeing nearly two feet of snow fall over the last week and a half of October was awfully exciting. In fact, the 9" storm from Sunday, October 23, matched the single biggest 24-hour storm from all of last season. Although it's currently snowing again, most of the snowfall from that initial storm has melted. Let's talk about why that's not necessarily a bad thing.

First and foremost, we need water for our snowmaking ponds. Last winter's lack of snow combined with low rainfall this spring and summer has left parts of Vermont in a severe drought. Things are actually so bad in parts of the state that wells have gone dry for the first time in nearly 20 years.

You may ask yourself, "what does this have to do with all that wonderful snow that I was so excited about melting?" Simply put, any precipitation benefits us by filling up either of our snowmaking ponds. At Bolton Valley, we draw water from a dam on Joiner Brook which is pumped up to a pond at Timberline. From there it is pumped up again to a snowmaking pond at Mid-Mountain which services Vista Peak. Water that doesn't fall directly into the ponds (such as melted snow) helps snowmaking operations by flowing into Joiner Brook.

While we welcome the idea of an opening day with a 40" base consisting of all natural snow with open arms. Chances are at some point we'll have to make some snow to get the ball rolling. Plus, we've brought in an extra air compressor for the early season so we can make more snow and hopefully open more trails as needed. So as you see snow come and go during these late fall/early winter months, have no fear. Winter in all it's glory is on the way.

Changes to 2016-17 Snowmaking Plan and Lift Schedule

The fall foliage is only just starting to emerge but here at Bolton Valley we are already focused on winter. We are happy to announce plans to increase early season snowmaking and will also offer more night skiing in 2016-17.

This season we will be bringing in an additional air compressor for one month starting in late November. The additional equipment will allow our snowmaking crew to increase the amount of snow guns they have online at one time. Mother Nature will still have to cooperate by providing cold temperatures, but the increased firepower will allow the operations team to make more snow when conditions permit. Ultimately this will allow for more trails to be opened more quickly at the beginning of the season.

“The addition of the new air compressor will allow us to make snow at both the peak and the base of the mountain at the same time.” said Harold Herbert, mountain manager. “This will allow us to offer more trails to guests for early season skiing and riding.”

The extra compressor will only be on site for one month, but it will pay benefits throughout the season. “The ability to cover more trails early in the season moves up the timeline for every other trail on the mountain.” Herbert continued.

Skiers and riders will have more time to enjoy all the snow with expanded night skiing hours. Night skiing will be offered five nights per week this season, up from four nights per week last season. Night skiing will also run until 10pm each night it is offered, last season night skiing closed at 8pm most nights. As in the past, lift tickets will be valid from the time of purchase until lifts close that day. This means that Tuesday through Friday a full day lift ticket will get you 12 hours of skiing and on Saturdays guests will be able to ski for 13 hours, from 9am until 10pm.

In addition to the on mountain changes, those staying at the mountain will also enjoy renovated ski-in, ski-out lodging. Over the past year most suites and 25 hotel rooms have received major upgrades. Improvements include new carpet, drapes, furniture, mattresses, fresh paint, and renovated bathrooms, new mattresses and new artwork.

50th Anniversary Essay Contest Winner

Thank you to everyone who participated in our 50th Anniversary Essay Contest this spring. The winner of the contest is Sue Brisson. Sue has been skiing at Bolton for the past 45 years. She skied here in her youth, then with her kids and now with her grandchildren. Her story exemplifies the tradition so many families have created over the years of enjoying quality family time on the mountain at Bolton Valley. Sue will be receiving a 2016-17 Bolton Valley All Access Season Pass. We have also indentified three runner up essays, all three of those authors will be receiving two lift tickets. We will share those essays at a later date.

Here is Sue's essay:

Learning of Bolton Valley’s 50-year celebration immediately elicited a plethora of personal memories, spanning back 45 years to those still being created as recently as this week!

My earliest days of skiing were all at ski areas in southern Vermont. We lived in Massachusetts, and traveled every weekend to ski. My dad was on ski patrol and taught me how to ski at Okemo mountain. Skiing became my absolute favorite childhood activity. I participated in NASTAR races, and spent entire grade school vacation weeks on the mountain. Things changed quickly in 1971 when my parents divorced and I moved to South Burlington, VT with my mom and special needs brother. Despite a limited budget, my mother made a Bolton Valley seasons pass a BIG priority for her 12-year-old ski fanatic.

Needless to say, Bolton Valley became a bright spot for me at a most challenging time in my childhood. Fortunately, I connected with the likes of 20 or so classmates at So. Burlington Middle School who also were Bolton pass holders and skied every weekend. I’d be remiss to not mention and express gratitude for the late Stuart Hall, 40-year veteran WCAX weatherman. Stuart was an avid skier and skied at Bolton every weekend with his daughter, Sib. Ultimately, he became our “ski taxi driver”, as he arranged to pick up as many of us as possible in his “station wagon” each Saturday and Sunday morning. As his daughter, Sib, recently remembered, “He was the reason so many of us were able to ski.”

I remember many of my Bolton skiing friends by name. . . Sib Hall, Kathy Miller, Maureen and Leo O’Brien, Frank Hall, Lori Croker, Wright Caswell, Ralph DesLauriers, Jr., and the late Rob LaClair, Jr., just to name a few. I remember silly teenage antics on the chairlift, and run after run on favorite trails, Hardluck, Spillway, and Showoff. I remember four lifts, all with fancy names. . . lift 1, 2, 3 and 4! I remember that we were a group of rather impressive skiers! I remember sometimes skiing down the mountain road at the end of the day to meet a ride home (Mother Nature was more generous in those days!). I remember wishing that my non-skier, seventh grade sweetheart, Tony, would at least give skiing a try?!

Jumping ahead to later in the seventies, several of us spent many Saturdays navigating the slalom gates under “lift 2”, as members of the South Burlington High School ski team. A few years later, when I was a UVM college student, that same seventh grade boyfriend, and now husband of thirty four years, popped a big question: “Will you please teach me how to ski?!” While Tony and I moved on to enjoy many ski areas, near and far, an affinity for Bolton Valley always remained. We spent many days at Bolton teaching our son and daughter to ski, enjoyed many summer climbs up the mountain road on our road bikes, and treasured the 2007 marriage of our daughter at The Ponds.

Fast forward to more recent years, when in 2014, we introduced our two young granddaughters to skiing at Bolton Valley. The oldest, Makenna, now 5, is the age that Bolton Valley was when I first skied there! She is obviously following in my footsteps and developing an undeniable love for the sport. While words cannot express the pure joy of teaching my granddaughters to ski at Bolton, there are countless photos. . . each worth AT LEAST a thousand. How to Save on Lift Tickets

The return of snow has been a very warm welcome here at Bolton Valley. After a snowy start to the New Year, we went nearly a week without a glimpse of that white fluffy stuff until last night. Thankfully, Mother Nature returned in full force dropping 6" on us overnight. With more snow on the way for the weekend, things are shaping up nicely for the MLK holiday.

We pride ourselves on being and affordable, family friendly mountain. When you visit, make sure to take advantage of the many ticket specials we offer. Here are five easy ways to visit Bolton Valley and save a buck or two.

1. Buy Online and Save: By far the easiest way to save is by purchasing your tickets in advance from our online store. Tickets are always lower than the window rate when purchased a day ahead of time.

2. Pink Powder Day: On January 22, Bolton Valley will be hosting a Pink Powder Day to benefit Susan G. Komen VT/NH. Tickets must be purchased in advance by Friday January 16 and will be only $29. $15 of your purchase will be donated to Susan G. Komen VT/NH. Remember, you must purchase in advance to redeem this ticket offer.

3. 50/50 Mondays: On Mondays, skiers and riders age 50 and over can enjoy 50% off All-Access Lift Tickets. For an added bonus we throw in 50% off rentals, groups lessons, and a special menu in the James Moore tavern.

4. Subaru and Hyundai Days: Are you a Subaru or Hyundai owner? If so, join us Jan. 29, Mar. 4, and Mar. 13 for your very own lift ticket specials. On Sundays, the promotion will allow owners to receive up to four lift tickets at 50% off the window rate for that day. Opening Day Planned for Thurs. Dec. 31

The snow guns were fired up last night and are currently blasting away. We have a window of cold weather that should last until Wednesday morning. The plan is to blow as much snow as possible through Wednesday morning, then groom on Wednesday night, and open for the season on Thursday, Dec. 31.

We've had a few false alarms on a date for Opening Day so far this season, and I won't blame you if you think we're like the boy who cried wolf. But, we really do seem to have slipped into a decent cold pattern that should stay around for a while. Even though we'll get a slight warm up on Wednesday, it should be brief and not too warm.

We plan to have Bear Run and Mighty Mite open on Thursday. Lifts will run from 8:30am - 8pm. Tickets will be just $49 adult and $39 youth/college/senior. Night skiing will be $19 for all ages starting at 4pm. The NYE Fireworks will start at 8:30pm.

We still have holiday week events happening this week including the NYE Fireworks and NYE Dinner. Call 802-434-6822 for NYE dinner reservations.

Opening Day Postponed

We are sorry to say that we will not be able to open this weekend. On Wednesday we were hopeful that the snow we made over the weekend would hold up. But, as you can see in the photo at the bottom of this post that was taken on Friday afternoon, the snow did not fare well in the nearly 70 degree weather and rain.

This leaves us once again waiting for temps cold enough to allow us to make snow. We do see some cooling starting on Sunday evening. We'll get back at it and fire the guns up as soon as we can. Check the snow report for the latest updates on when we'll be able to open.

The Tavern will still be open on Friday at 5pm and each day this weekend starting at 11am. BV Sports and Guest Services will be open 8am - 4pm on Saturday and Sunday. The Deli will be open 7:30am - 8pm each day this weekend. The Sports Center will be open 10am - 8pm Saturday and Sunday.
