That's a wrap! The 2012-13 season at Bolton Valley has come to a close. A big thank you to everyone who came out to ski and ride with us this year. Have a great summer and we look forward to seeing you again next winter.

Extra Innings Weekend

We can sum up the weekend projections with just two words: Spring Skiing. If that's good enough for you, then feel free to skip ahead to the next headline which has something to do with $29 lift tickets, or even further ahead to read about your chance to score next year's pass at a great price. But, if you'd like to hear more about conditions for this weekend stick with us and head to the next paragraph.

Thanks to over 3 feet of snow since March 15, and colder than usual temps the past couple of weeks, the mountain is in excellent shape. Base depths are solid and snow should corn up nicely this weekend. We expect temps in the 30s under sunny skies on Saturday. Sunday, we'll see more clouds but the mercury will rise into the mid 40s. All in all, it looks like it is going to be a tremendous weekend of spring riding. Talk about closing out the season on a high note!

$29 Lift Tickets

As an avid reader of this Blog, you know that Bolton Valley's closing day was planned for this past Sunday, March 31. Also, you probably already know that thanks to mid-winter conditions lasting into late March, the season is going into Extra Innings and Bolton Valley will be open for one final weekend on April 6 and 7. Our plan is to run the Vista Quad Saturday and Sunday from 8:30am - 4:00pm. Pretty much every trail off of Vista will be open giving you about 40 trails and glades to choose from. Lift tickets will be just $29 each day.

We plan to set the BBQ up on Saturday and you can grab a burger and a drink for just $6. The Tavern and Deli will also be open this weekend, each with a limited menu. Ski school will be offering private lessons all weekend for intermediate and advanced skiers looking for those late season tips for spring skiing and riding.

Thanks to deep base depths we plan to have about 11km groomed for both skate and classic skiing on our Nordic terrain. The remainder of our 100km of backcountry terrain will be open for the more adventurous souls. Nordic day tickets this weekend will be just $5.

Special Sale on 2013-14 All Access Season Passes

The deadline for the early prices on season passes was on April 1st, but in honor of Extra Innings Weekend we have decided to give you one more shot at getting a 2013-14 Season Pass at a fairly reduced rate. When you purchase your pass before midnight on April 7th, you'll pay just $10 more than the early spring price for an All Access Season Pass and just $5 more than the early price for a Nordic pass. Season long leases and lockers are also on sale for just $10 more than the early price.
As another bonus, you can use your 2013-14 Season Pass to ski and ride this weekend for free.

Bolton Valley is going into Extra Innings April 6^th and 7^th! That means you’ll get a bonus weekend of skiing and riding with lift tickets at just $29. Conditions have been nice and springy, so plan ahead for a great weekend. Please note that we are closed midweek, April 1^st through the 5^th, and we will reopen on Saturday April 6^th at 8:30am for Extra Innings. You can expect more updates to come as the week progresses, so stay tuned.

A few updates as we head into another weekend of great conditions!

Weather:

It seems that we are heading into a few days of relatively mild temperatures. Friday and Saturday should be in the mid to upper 30s. Both days bring a chance of flurries and Saturday could turn partly sunny. Sunday is still a bit of an unknown right now. Forecasts indicate we could hit the low 40s with possible precipitation late in the day. Hopefully any wet weather will just pass us by, as precip chances still look to be fairly low at this point.

Trails and Conditions:

We will be very near 100% open yet again this weekend! We can safely project 68 of our 70 trails to be open. We will run 5 lifts: Vista, Timberline, Wilderness, Snowflake and Mighty Mite. The snow conditions are abundant packed powder. Thursday we woke up to 1-2 inches of snow that gave the surfaces a little refresher. But overall, the skiing is just phenomenal and with more terrain to get at this weekend, you can't go wrong.

Bonus Night Skiing!

We're offering some bonus night skiing on Friday and Saturday. Night skiing will run from 3-7pm and will cost a mere $19. We will also honor any Night Passes including the Powder Pass Lite. On Sunday, we'll keep Vista open for an additional hour and it will close at 5pm. From 3-5pm that day, tickets will be $19 as well, so squeeze in every last run you can!

Weekend Events: Pond Skimming, Karaoke and an Easter Egg Hunt

This Saturday March 30th at 1pm is Rock and Roll Pond Skimming presented by WIZN watch the gutsiest Bolton Valley skiers and riders attempt to cross our man made pond. The stakes are high; one adult and one youth winner will take home a 2013/2014 All Access Season Pass for the best skim. Registration begins at 10am. The entry fee is just $5 per skimmer and you must have a lift ticket or season pass to enter. If you feel like dry is more your style, come out to watch the splashes and listen to some great music. WIZN radio host Joey Vega will be the special guest announcer for the afternoon.

On Easter Sunday, we'll throw on our bonnets for a good old fashioned Easter Egg Hunt. Kids aged 12 and under won't want to miss the candy and prizes the bunny has in store.

We'll keep the Rock 'n Roll theme alive on March 31st with Spring Ski and Ride Karaoke starting at 1pm! So grab your hairbrush and come in costume because we'll give away a 2013/2014 All Access Season Pass to one adult and one youth winner. Registration starts at noon, entry fee is just $5.

BV Heading into "Extra Innings" Bonus Weekend of skiing April 6th and 7th

Over 3 feet of snow since March 15th is a bit of a game changer. The last day of the season was scheduled for Sunday, March 31st, but because of the prime conditions we have decided to extend our season. After this weekend, we will be closed mid-week (April 1st-5th) and we will re-open April 6th and 7th with a bonus weekend of skiing and riding we're calling "Extra Innings." The last day of the season was scheduled for Sunday, March 31st. But, thanks to over 3 feet of snow since March 15th conditions are as good as they've been all year. So, we’re extending the season and heading into “Extra Innings” on Saturday and Sunday, April 6 and 7. (We will be closed mid-week from April 1-5).

36 Hour, $19 Lift Ticket Sale

Lift tickets for Extra Innings will be just $29 per day. Want more savings? Then get your Extra Innings ticket during the 36 Hour Sale and save 33% off of the already reduced rate. From noon on Thursday to midnight on Friday (March 28-29) you can purchase your Extra Innings lift tickets online for just $19 per day.

$58 Ski and Stay Packages

Extra Innings Weekend will Consist of the Following:

Vista Quad only from 8:30am – 4pm (Timberline, Wilderness and all other lifts will be closed)
We are anticipating intermediate and advanced skiing and riding on about 40 trails, weather permitting.
$29 all ages, all day lift tickets (No afternoon or late day pricing. Coupons or discounts cannot be applied to this rate.)
Season passes will be honored including night passes (Nordic passes will not be valid at the lifts)
BV Sports will continue with their 20% off sale on most items.
The James Moore Tavern and the Deli will be open with a very limited menu for food and drinks.

The Sports Center will be open from 8:30am – 4:00pm each day for video games and the Sports Center field house. There will be no pool, hot tub, sauna or inflatable games.
There will not be group lessons but private lessons will be offered. There will not be Nordic lessons.

Pond Skimming has been postponed due to temps in the low 20's and gusty winds. We will now hold Pond Skimming next Saturday, March 30. Spring Ski and Ride Karaoke will be bumped to Sunday, March 31.

It may be spring on the calendar, but it looks like deep midwinter here at Bolton Valley. Check out these photos from Wednesday morning...and remember, add 3 - 4 more inches of snow to what you see.

Weather:

There's not much 'splainin' to do in terms of weather this week. It could basically be summed up with one statement: We got a ton of snow. But, I suppose if you're looking for the particulars you'd want to know that our storm total was between 18-19 inches. And, that the temperatures look to keep that snow around for the foreseeable future. Going into the weekend there is a chance of snow on Friday and Saturday with comfortable temps in the low 30s. Sunday could live up to its name as we may see some sunny skies. Not bad as we near the end of March, not bad at all.

Trails and Conditions:

This weekend we will have 5 of our lifts running, including Timberline and Wilderness. Timberline will open at 10:30am on Friday; Wilderness will come in on Saturday at 10am. We project a near 100% opening for the weekend, as 68 of our 70 trails should be online.

The snow this week started on the heavier and wetter side, but quickly transitioned into that lighter, more delicate powder we are all so fond of. So the combination of snow types has not only helped to pack down a tad more on the base, but it has also provided some really ideal surfaces to ski on. Both the groomed and ungroomed trails remain soft and should stay that way into the weekend. Whatever trails you choose to hit this weekend (or heck, maybe you plan to hit them all) you're going to be in store for a treat. From from the snow-filled woods to the groomed terrain, there’s really no going wrong.

Spring Lift Ticket Prices

With the mountain in the great shape that it is and spring lift ticket rates that let you ski on the cheap, there's no reason to stay home. Here's the lift ticket pricing for the rest of the season:

$39 for an Adult Full Day ticket
$29 for a Full Day Youth, Senior, or College Student ticket
Just $19 for an "all ages" Night Skiing ticket (4-8pm)

Great snow, great weather, lots of open trails and bargain lift tickets would all be reason enough to get out on the hill this weekend. But we don't stop there. Call us overachievers, go ahead. For the rest of the month, we're keeping the fun going on and off the slopes.

Pond Skimming and Other End-of-March Happenings!

This Weekend:

On Friday (3/22) head to the JMT for a performance from Donna Thunders and the Storm from 8- 11 pm. Quell your burning legs with the evening's Long Trail specials.

On Saturday (3/23) the biggest event of the year returns to Bolton Valley and this time, it's Rock 'n Roll themed. WIZN presents Rock 'n Roll Pond Skimming. What's pond skimming you ask? Let me give you a visual. We groom out a tasty incline and build a pond. You throw on your best rock-themed costume and your skis or snowboard and head down that incline in an attempt to cross the pond. And to the victor go the spoils, as one adult and one youth winner will take home a2013/2014 All Access Season Pass for the best skim. Registration begins at 10am, skimming commences at 1pm. The entry fee is just $5 per skimmer and you must have a lift ticket or season pass to enter. For those who don't care to skim, come spectate! There will be great music and even better splashes. WIZN radio host Joey Vega will be the special guest announcer for the afternoon.

Also on Saturday, Blue Fox appears for some live tunes in the JMT. Be there from 8-11pm. And don't miss the last trivia night of the season this Sunday with Mike Germano, from 6-8pm.

Snow

There are lots of ways to talk about getting more than you pay for. "A filet for the cost of a hamburger" or "Playoff tickets at pre-season prices" and our favorite "Mid-winter conditions at spring ticket rates". I probably made all of those up but the point is simple. We've picked up 9-10 inches of new snow as of 2pm on Tuesday and it is still coming down. Heavily. We should see several more inches overnight. Tomorrow will be a certifiable Powder Day. And, starting yesterday, we lowered our lift ticket rates for the spring. So, there you have it, mid-winter conditions at spring ticket rates.

Plenty of Winter 'Round Here!

Weather:

We made it through the wilderness, somehow we made it through. Sometimes it's best to just leave the explaining to the Material Girl. Okay, Monday and Tuesday...well, they stunk. Over 24 hours of warm weather and rain was obviously not our idea of optimal skiing conditions. But the great news is, the weather turned around pretty quickly. By Wednesday afternoon the temps were back in the 30s and the snow was a-falling. Thursday morning we woke up to 2 inches of fresh snow with continued snowfall until midday, adding another inch to our total. The weather will stay in the winter zone this weekend. We're looking at highs in the mid to upper 20s with a mix of clouds and sun.

Trails and Conditions:

Even more to celebrate is the fact that the snow held up nicely under some unfavorable, early-week conditions. On Wednesday we made a strategic move to keep our trail count low. The mountain needed to dry out and grooming would have only done more harm than good. Wednesday night brought a grooming plan that has already paid off and we're currently enjoying the results. We've gone from 11 trails to 49 today. Snow surfaces are a combination of frozen granular and packed powder. The groomed snow especially is plenty soft, while you may find the ungroomed snow to be firmer or more variable. All in all, we're in great shape considering the date on the calendar and what we dealt with this week, so don't miss out on another great weekend on the hill!

Tavern and Events:

Both Friday and Saturday night you can catch some tunes in the JMT. Friday the 15th it's The Woedoggies from 8-11pm. The Woedoggies are a 3-piece string band made up of Vermont music veterans who play classic, simple, honest, acoustic country. On Saturday come on out for Bad Dog, featuring a night of original music with band members Joe Byers, Dan Sharp, Tim Gregg and Shane Roya.

Two major events are going on this weekend as well, including the Mountain Dew Vertical Challenge on Saturday and Skier and Rider Appreciation Day on Sunday. Join us for both! We also have events every weekend for the rest of the month. Check out our spring events calendar for more info!

Here comes the SUN!

Weather:

Sun? Is that you? We've been fortunate to have some very comfortable weather for what seems like the last two weeks. But one thing we haven't had is sun! That already seems to be changing today as the sun is starting to peek out and is expected to stick around for the day Saturday. The temperatures could climb into the upper 30s by Sunday, so it seems that we'll be shedding a layer and skiing on the less bundled side as we're visited by a bit of spring-like weather!

Trails and Conditions:

For the second weekend in a row all 70 of our trails will have their ropes down. That means you'll have your pick of terrain from wide open lanes to tree-filled glades and anything and everything in between. We have had a few small snowfalls to keep things fresh this week, but you can expect the majority of snow surfaces to be packed powder out on the hill. The groomed snow feels pretty soft and should remain this way with the mild temps that are being called for the weekend. There are plenty of bump trails to check out on the steeper terrain such as Preacher and Playground, but you can also find some intermediate bumps on trails like Glades or Coyote. The Jungle Jib has recently re-opened with a couple new features and this weekend is your last chance to hit the giant US Airbag, which is here until the 10th.

Tavern and Events:

There's a lot going on this weekend starting with Ski and Ride With The Point today. Once your legs are toast, catch the après party in the JMT. Yummy Harpoon will be on special. Today is also Free Nordic Ticket day and you can snag a Free Backcountry Tour starting at 1pm.

Saturday is Hope on the Slopes along with the Ride and Ski New England Party. Kevin Black will provide the soundtrack for the night with live music from 8-11pm. Sunday is trivia night from 6-8pm of course, but Sunday is also the final Subaru and Hyundai Customer Appreciation Day where you can ski and ride for free starting at noon with your Subaru/Hyundai registration. Don't let March get away from you, get to BV!

Thursday afternoon on Adam's Solitude.

February was very kind to us at Bolton Valley. It seemed like every week we were readying ourselves for another generous snowfall! Here at the start of March we're poised to continue along with another beautiful month of skiing and riding, with a season snowfall total near 200 inches and plenty more winter in our future.

Weather:

Wednesday and early Thursday were key in bringing us some fresh snow, although we may not be done yet! We've picked up 7-9 inches of snow since Wednesday, but we could see a few more inches before the end of the day Friday. It would be really satisfying to cap off the week with a foot wouldn't it?!? Snow could also make an appearance on Saturday as well. The temperature is just plain great. We've been hovering right around 30 and look to stay there for the weekend. Winds don't seem to be much of a factor at this point as they shouldn't rise over 20 mph.

Trails and Conditions:

It's all amazing. I mean, I could just leave it at that, 'cause it's true. We are currently 100% open, with all 70 trails for you to get at. As you can imagine, the glades and all the nooks and crannies in the woods are skiing great. It's the stuff we wait for all year and now, it's here. In fact, multiple folks from patrols to groomers, to your little 'ol snow reporter all agree, these are the best conditions we've seen all season. Lots of powder, lots of packed powder, lots of epic hours on the hill. Enough said!

Tavern:

Saturday in the tavern you can catch the music of Lenny Noel from 8-11pm. Raise a pint of Wolaver's to toast the incredible snow. And of course it's Bolton After Dark as well, $19 night skiing and cheap eats in Fireside Flatbread starting at 4pm.

Sunday is another night of trivia with Mike Germano. Join us from 6-8pm.

Oh So Much Snow!

If you're like me, your mind is already in that weekend territory. And while weekends do come around like clockwork, weekends like this certainly do not. Heed my advice reader; you won't regret a trip up to Bolton Valley this weekend.

Weather:

We've had some excellent weather karma this week. Maybe it was because we burned all that sage and incense and covered the mountain with good voodoo. Or perhaps it was my funky snow dance. But let's get down to brass tacks: We got us some snow this week, most notably the addition of 18 inches in the last 7 days, with 15-16 of those inches falling in just the past 72 hours. Could we be any more set up for a perfect weekend? Ya we could, here you go: Temps today through Sunday look to stay right around that 30 degree sweet spot. Both Saturday and Sunday we expect to see some snowfall, with more potential accumulation on Sunday.

Trails and Conditions:

We have been nearly 100% open all week long, but with all the new snow and fine craftsmanship of our groomers, you'd think we'd only been running Mighty Mite for the last few days! Things look pretty beautiful out there on both the groomed and ungroomed surfaces alike. The woods are a real gem. The snow is keeping the trails very fresh and there's enough of it for you to still find untouched powder this weekend. We currently have 67 trails for the taking and we could add another trail or two to that count. All 6 lifts will spin this weekend, bringing you to the pow and some expertly groomed, luscious packed powder. We will also have night skiing tonight and Saturday so you don't have to say goodnight to Bolton once the sun goes down.

Tavern:

Saturday in the tavern Blue Fox will join us once again from 8-11pm. Sip Woodchuck Cider on special and enjoy what Art Edelstein of the Times Argus newspaper calls, “One of the few authentic blues musicians in Vermont – well worth the listen.”

Sunday, it's another night of trivia with Mike Germano from 6-8pm. Did you wash that thinking cap like I told you last week? You'll need it!

Family Week is here! Maybe you're trying to figure out how to spend some real, authentic quality time with your kids over their school break. Spillway and Wilderness

President's Day is coming up and thanks to our nation's forefathers and a few other presidents after that, you get an extra day off. Perhaps you were thinking of growing (or donning) a Lincoln-esq beard. While it is a fine tribute, we suggest honoring our leaders by exercising your right to life, liberty and the pursuit of powder. February is short and sweet, so enjoy President's Day weekend with an extra day of skiing and riding!

Weather:

This week we've had some excellent conditions on the mountain. The temps have remained cold, but not too cold, or as Goldilocks would say, "just right." We've also picked up some small snowfalls to keep things nice and powdery out there. We have a chance for snow today and into the late evening hours. We expect a temperature drop to the 10-20 degree range which will stay for most of the weekend. Both Saturday and Sunday bring along the chance of snowfall for us as well.

Trails and Conditions:

That "just right" weather I mentioned also helped out our groomers and snowmakers. Snowmaking on Spillway kept chugging along all week and wrapped up last night. We began to push out snow piles early this morning and hope to have Spillway up and running for you on Saturday. We project nearly 65 trails for the weekend, which gets us very close to being 100% open! To get to those 65 trails we anticipate the addition of Wilderness starting at 10am on Saturday. The snow surfaces are a mix of powder and packed powder conditions, with the ungroomed and natural snow trails containing some thin or variable spots. Overall, it looks to be another great weekend of skiing and riding as we begin to creep ever closer to a season total of 200 inches of snow. And you'll get even more time to enjoy it with a bonus evening of $19 night skiing this Sunday the 17th. We'll be here 'til 8pm under the lights.

Tavern:

Plenty of music in the James Moore Tavern for the listening this weekend. Blue Fox will join us tonight from 8-11pm. Sip Long Trail specials and enjoy what Art Edelstein of the Times Argus newspaper calls, “One of the few authentic blues musicians in Vermont – well worth the listen.”

Saturday don't miss The Woedoggies, also from 8-11pm. Besides having a great name, The Woedoggies play classic, simple, honest, acoustic country. The perfect blend for a chilly Vermont après ski evening.

Sunday catch Chad Hollister from 8-11pm. Trivia will return next Sunday, so throw your thinking cap in the laundry so it will be sparkling clean for the next competition.

It's snowing. A lot.

A week ago I was writing that we had to close for a day due to unfavorable conditions. And what a difference a week makes. A glance out the window gives you all the information you really need: It's snowing. A lot.

Weather:

This week we have benefited from two heavier than expected snowfalls, with 6 inches falling on Monday and 4 on Wednesday. Both snows helped refresh the terrain and give us a little extra something to pack down, aiding the base. And as of right now, we've picked up nearly 8 inches of snow from our current storm and it does not look to stop any time soon. The past 7 days have given us 18 inches of snow...talk about a real change in the weather!

Trails and Conditions:

Our current trail count stands at 38 after only 8 inches of snow this morning. Add a foot of fresh snow or more to the mix and it's a whole new ballgame. If the snow continues as it is supposed to, we could have nearly all trails open off of Vista and Timberline as well as Snowflake and Mid-Mountain. There may be a few exceptions here and there, but it's looking promising. Wilderness is still in a bit of a holding pattern until we're really able to see what this storm does for us. But as soon as conditions allow, we will re-open Wilderness. Snow surfaces are rapidly turning to powder all over the mountain.

Entertainment:

Today you can catch Milo Greene in the tavern between 3-5pm as part of Ski and Ride with the Point.

There's also tavern fun for everyone with the Dewey Drive Band from 8-11pm on Saturday in the JMT. Harpoon will be on special. And, Sunday means intellectual Olympics from 6-8pm as Mike Germano hosts trivia night!

Today we will reopen at noon after some less than favorable conditions forced us to close for a day. But it’s already improving around here; it is snowing lightly and there is a fresh dusting on the ground.

Weather:

The good news is, after heavy rains and some messy conditions, we're out of our second January thaw. The temps are now more on the winter side of things and look to stay that way for upwards of a week or more...so the weather news is much better than it has been. Plus, snow is in the forecast for the next 3-4 days!

Trails and Conditions:

With the cold brings more snowmaking and the opportunity for us to patch up spots that were impacted by the weather. We're currently making snow from the top of Mid-Mountain on down and next in line are Sherman's Pass and Hard Luck Lane. While we're only able to project 14 trails for the weekend, we hope to emphasize quality over quantity and ensure that the skiing surfaces that we do have open are the very best they can be. And, once we add a little natural snow to the mix, we'll be upping our trail count in no time!

We're doing our utmost to give you some great skiing and riding for the weekend, so put away the umbrella and throw those layers back on, because winter is starting up once again.

Live Music in the JMT: Donna Thunders and the Storm perform live in the James Moore Tavern from 8-11pm. Sam Adams will be on special. Donna Thunders and the Storm describe themselves as "outlaw country" and include band members Donna "Thunders" Moran on lead vocals, guitar and fiddle, Chris Martin on bass and vocals, Quenn on fiddle, banjo, guitar and vocals, Frank Pavlik on mandolin, guitar and vocals, and Cooper on drums.

Sunday:

Are you ready for some football? We suggest celebrating Super Bowl 47 with your two favorite things: Skiing and riding at Bolton Valley and the big game on the big screen. Shout out to BV Patrollers:

As of last Sunday, our Bolton Valley Ski Patrol eclipsed 3,000 hours of volunteer service for the season. The BV Ski Patrol is a team of 65 strong, of which 55 are unpaid volunteers. These skilled, dedicated professionals are a valuable part of the mountain and essential to all who ski it. Alert, newsflash, attention: It's cold!!! BRRRR. Oh, you already knew that? Okay, moving on.

Friday Deal:

Weather:

Yup, it's cold. It's also winter. In Vermont. So, this is not necessarily a surprising phenomenon. We've had several days of very cold temperatures, and that trend looks to continue into the weekend. We should celebrate the fact that the temps could warm from anywhere between 4-14 degrees on Saturday and Sunday...that's a whole 20 some degrees warmer than our temps this week. It's also worth mentioning that we've picked up some small snowfalls and snow is in the forecast both Friday night and Saturday morning. Most long-range forecasts are calling for temperatures to get back to average at the start of next week.

Trails and Conditions:

Our trail count will pop up starting Friday as Timberline rejoins the roster. We project nearly 50 trails for the weekend, with favorites such as Hard Luck, Cobrass, Wood's Hole and Showtime. There will be plenty of terrain to choose from for folks of various ability levels. And with 5 lifts spinning this weekend, the traffic on the mountain should be spread out, making things all the more enjoyable. Wilderness will remain closed, which is a bummer. Unfortunately, there is just not enough natural snow for the upper section of that mountain. We would really appreciate a ginormous snowfall to kick Wilderness back in to high gear, but for right now, we're waiting on a snowpocalypse.

Snow surfaces are primarily packed powder and frozen granular. The snow remains fairly soft despite the cold temps and under that layer sits a very firm base. Sticking to the groomed stuff is again a good bet this weekend for the best possible skiing and riding.

Saturday the 26th is PHAT Helmet Day where you can get lots of great info on helmet use and enter the raffle for a free helmet giveaway. We're also offering 20% off helmets (and 30% off for season pass holders) at BV Sports.
We'll have another evening of Bolton After Dark with $19 night skiing, $2 draft beer, soda and flatbread slices. We’ll begin our film series with Head for the Hills from Meathead Films.
Starting at 8pm we host Lenny Noel to bring you into après ski paradise. PBR is on special and the tunes will keep you going until 11pm.

Sunday

It's a backcountry extravaganza, with the 5th annual Get Out and Backcountry Ski Festival! This is a truly unique event that both showcases the incredible terrain and provides a full backcountry experience for skiers from novice to pro. Weekend Update

You can't live in New England without being familiar with this saying: "Don't like the weather? Just wait a minute." Well, we waited more than a minute for that pesky January thaw to leave, but leave it did and we're well on our way to having the mountain in good shape for the weekend.

Weather:

This week has been consistently cold and wintry, and the weekend should bring more of the same. Friday starts off pretty chilly, with highs in the single digits and a chance of light snow. The thermometer will be on the rise during the day, taking us into some more reasonable temps for Saturday and Sunday. Both weekend days will have highs in the mid to upper 20s with moderate wind. There is white stuff in the forecast as well, with Sunday looking like the better bet for us to add to our snow totals. With new snow on the ground from this week combined with the hard work of our groomers and snowmakers, we've made significant progress!

Trails and Conditions:

Mondays are by far the most depressing day of the week. And on Monday morning we had downright icky and warm daytime weather, with the freeze hitting us late in the evening. That led us to Tuesday's trail count of 7. Ya, that just won't do. But the great news is that we came back in a big way. By Wednesday we were up to 16 trails, Thursday it was 25, and for this weekend, we're able to project 30 trails and 5 lifts. Unfortunately, Wilderness has not been able to bounce back as quickly as we would have liked, but Timberline will be up and running starting on Saturday with a few trails for you to get at. Butterscotch Park and Jungle Jib are also open for our terrain park fans.

We've done a lot of grooming this week to break up icy snow on the thinner trails to allow for more skiable snow surfaces. The open trails this weekend will all be groomed and you can anticipate the snow surface to be a mix of both frozen granular and packed powder conditions. The snow is skiing well, with the recent snowfall making conditions feel fresh. The base feels solid, but not crusty and turns can be made easily. We've had some good output in terms of snowmaking, and guns fired up on several different trails this week.

All of our efforts have really helped us climb back from the warm spell, and we hope you enjoy the trails this weekend. Know that we're in good shape, and we only stand to see improved conditions as favorable weather is expected to continue.

Sunday brings back the Dewey Drive Band for a return appearance! This band is well known in the JMT, playing a wide variety of originals and B-sides including country, swing, blues and rock & roll. Catch them from 8-11pm, with Labatt and #9 again on special.

We have also two special events coming up in the last weekend in January, so mark your calendar.

PHAT Helmet Day: We will host PHAT Helmet Day on Saturday January 26th. PHAT encourages you to Protect your Head at All Times. 5th Annual Get Out and Backcountry Ski Festival: The following day, Sunday January 27th, is the 5th Annual Get Out and Backcountry Ski Festival. This is an event for both experienced and novice backcountry skiers alike. Take a guided backcountry tour on our beautiful terrain and then check out workshops to build skills and understanding about all things backcountry. There will also be an opportunity to demo the latest equipment on the market. And, what day on skis would be complete without an après party? The event is $40 for Catamount Trail Association members and $60 for non-members. Find out more about the festival and register through the CTA.

Thaw/Freeze Recovery

Recovery from the thaw/freeze cycle is under way. We are pleased to announce that the Jungle Jib will join our trail count at opening bell on Wednesday and we'll have the Butterscotch Park and Sprig O' Pine open by the time the lights come on for night skiing on Wednesday.

By doing a little math on a cocktail napkin we can project a trail count of nearly 30 by the weekend, and that's without any natural snow. Here's the quick version of how we'll get there. In addition to pulling out our original edition of 101 Snow Dances from Around the World, it'll be all about snowmaking and grooming. We started the recovery by grooming the trails that had a decent base depth thanks to snowmaking. We are now moving onto thinner areas to break up the icy snow and create a skiable surface. Those should be ready by the weekend. We are also making snow at Timberline in order to get a number of trails over there open by the weekend too. So, it looks like we'll be able to get the mountain back into decent shape relatively quickly. Throw in some natural snow (and there is some in the forecast over the next couple days) and things could get even better.

Weekend Update & Timberline Opening

Weather:

Bust out the bikinis and board shorts people. We've got ourselves a little warm up a-comin'. Alright, you've probably heard we're in for a January "thaw" this weekend, and maybe you're crying a snowflake shaped tear. Fear not says Bolton Valley. Our weekend weather projections show Friday to be the trickiest day with temps between the mid to upper 30s and a chance of mixed precipitation. After we clear that hurdle, both Saturday and Sunday look to be warm and dry with temps in the mid 30s to upper 40s. We'll call this our spring skiing preview weekend. Thanks to ten feet of snow so far this season, our base should stay in good shape; there is a lot of snow on the mountain! The snow will be soft, you'll have one less itchy wool sweater on and the skiing and riding will feel great before the temps dip down and smack you in the face again.

Trails and Conditions:

The trail count jumps up to 68 trails and 6 lifts as this weekend we celebrate the season debut of the Timberline Quad. We know you have been anxiously awaiting its opening. A few things to remember as you enjoy the terrain down at Timby.

The grooming will be limited in this area. We will hit Upper Villager and Timberline Run, but the remaining sections of the mountain will be mostly ungroomed. In addition, with the warmer weather, you can expect the deep snow to do some melting, making it significantly heavier. Skier traffic will also cut up the terrain, leaving the surface on the rugged side. With all of this in mind, it's important to "level up" the trails on Timberline this weekend. For example, if you're hitting a blue square, know that it is more likely to ski like a black diamond. Black diamonds will be more in line with double blacks, and so on. We suggest that only solid intermediate, advanced and expert skiers and riders tackle the trails at Timberline this weekend. Expert skiers and riders should be the only guests exiting the Timberline Quad at the mid-station due to trail conditions. Also, be sure to watch for thin cover and other obstacles despite the deep snow you may encounter. For those of you ready for the challenge, get out and enjoy it!

In addition to Timberline, we expect the rest of our trails to be in nice shape, with soft packed powder snow surfaces. There are spots of untouched of powder to find here and there as well. This week the parks crew has been out building in Butterscotch Park, so we hope to have that up and running for the weekend as well.

Lots of options to choose from + an expanding trail count + some pleasant temps = happy weekend.

Last weekend we saw a great turn out at our first Bolton After Dark of the season and we can't wait to do it again this Saturday. The Perks of Bolton After Dark? I'm glad you asked.

Starting at 4pm, you ski/ride the most extensive night skiing terrain in Vermont for $19.

Weekend Update

It's been a beautiful start to the new year here at Bolton Valley. After a stretch of grey weather, we've seen beautiful bluebird days, and some pretty magnificent sunsets. And that's without even mentioning the snow! Check out our weekend update.

Weather:

Bored of the same old story? Want a little variety? Then head to The Keys. 'Cause we have gotten into the groove of incredible ski and ride weather. I must say, I'm very happy to sound like a broken record in the first week of January. This weekend looks to be....in the low 20s with a chance of snow. In other words, perfect.

Our snow total so far this season is over 109 inches and on the rise as I pen this update. Over the last seven days, we've received about 23 inches of snow. If you like powder, and I'm guessing you do, you need to pay us a visit this weekend.

Trails and Conditions:

Maybe you don't need to read my projections, maybe all you need to do is check out this gallery from Wednesday afternoon. Conditions are expected to remain outstanding. Snow surfaces are primarily powder and soft packed powder. We're expecting to have 55 trails open for you to enjoy, served by 5 lifts. Another high point is that we are starting to see some bumps on our steeper trails. You'll want to check out the trail section of the daily Snow Report to find out where those bumps are present. This week also saw the grand re-opening of our terrain park in its new location, Jungle Jib. It's open with 5 rail features and one jump, so have at it!

A note on Nordic as well, all of this new snow has really helped us build a solid base, and the backcountry is in incredible shape for adventures of all kinds. Be sure to keep up on conditions with our Nordic Snow Report. There you'll find skate and classic track grooming info as well as the wax of the day.

Goings On:

This Saturday night, we welcome back Bolton After Dark. Start the evening off with a little night skiing from 4-8pm for a mere $19. Then head to Fireside Flatbread, where slices, sodas and PBR drafts will run you just $2 a piece, also starting at 4.

Even more excitement begins at 8, and since we know you're ready for some football, we'll be showing NFL Playoff games on the big screen. 101.3 ESPN will sponsor our apres party where you could win lift tickets, movie tickets and other great prizes.

Snow, Snow, Snow (and bumps)

We picked up about 16 inches from the winter storm that blew through here on Thursday. The skiing was spectacular on Thursday and Friday with plenty of powder to be found everywhere. We groomed out about two thirds of the open trails on Saturday for some buttery corduroy.

After a brief day off on Friday, the snow clouds are at it again. We've picked up about an inch of new snow as of Saturday afternoon and we expect a few more inches will land by opening bell on Sunday. This will only help to freshen up the trails with some more powder. Also, some small bumps are starting to form on the steeper, ungroomed trails such as Hard Luck. With a few more days of skier traffic, we may have a couple legitimate bump runs to talk about. As always, keep your eye on the snow report for the latest updates.

A Foot Of Fresh And Counting

We've been absolutely blessed by the weather gods and goddesses over the past 9-10 days. Wow. We have lots of snow, over three feet in the past week. We've had sun, low winds, reasonable temps. Love. It.

We are in the middle of a major snowstorm. As of the writing of this post we have already received a foot of new snow since this morning. The photo below was taken on Thursday afternoon. Check out our photo gallery for more visual evidence of snow at Bolton Valley. It is forecast to continue snowing until sometime on Friday morning. The weekend looks to be a bit more settled with the possibility of some light snow and flurries with seasonable temps in the 20s.

We've added more trails day by day this week. All of our trails from the Top of the Vista Quad are open. And, Snowflake and Wilderness are now up and running and we plan to have 55 tails open this weekend including Spillway. We have a variety of terrain open from beginner to double black diamond, so you've got options in terms of runs. Surfaces will be generally packed powder.

17 inches of snow over the last 7 days? I'd say that makes for a good weekend. So avoid the mall and those holiday crowds, and instead, ski 'til you drop! Here's the weekend lowdown.

Weather

Friday started off a little shaky, but turned out alright! We're still watching the weather carefully as we continue to experience high winds. Mixed precipitation has been in the forecast all day today, but it's currently showing itself as snow more than anything else. And after today, it does seem that we're making our way into an extended chilly zone. Saturday looks to bring snow and significantly colder temps for the rest of the weekend and start to next week.

Trails Open and Conditions

Groomers will be out tonight to ensure the snow is in great shape for Saturday morning. You can also expect snowmaking to ramp right back up Saturday night as the temps take a plunge. We'll continue to hit Beech Seal as well as Butterscotch Park, and any necessary "fill in" work.

We project at least 6 trails to be open for the weekend, and perhaps many as 20-24, serviced by 3 lifts. Keep an eye on the Snow Report for more updates as natural snowfall continues. Top to bottom skiing and riding will continue off the Vista Quad. Hard Luck Lane and Spillway Lane offer a little variety as well. We've had some great snow the past several days, and we expect that trend to continue. The Vista Quad will start off each weekend day, and we will also have Mid-Mountain and Mighty Mite spinning as well.

We've also expanded the Hike Park off Sprig O' Pine. You can expect to see our new Oil Can in the park for the coming weekend and 8 features overall.

Nordic

The long awaited start to the Nordic season should be just around the corner. The 19 inches of natural snowfall has helped us stack up a solid base, and inch closer to an Opening Day.

We are hopeful for an opening this weekend, but we're still waiting to see what the rest of today's weather might do, so we’re still in a bit of a holding pattern. Opening Day Highlights and Sunday Funday!

Yesterday was an amazing start to the season here at Bolton Valley. Conditions were much better than anticipated, with near wall to wall coverage thanks to our outstanding groomers and snowmakers. We're continuing to add to our trail count; we've been making snow on Alta Vista since Friday evening to stack up enough to get it running for Monday. We're also making snow in the Butterscotch Park, and on Sprig O' Pine.

Speaking of Sprig O' Pine, a big highlight of Opening Weekend has been the Hike Park located there. It's loaded with 6 rail features, and was a busy spot Saturday. Yesterday I heard more than a few guests literally laughing down the mountain...a good sign! People seemed to be enjoying the snow and were appreciative of the changing seasons.

Today we have some great deals going on for skiing and riding including:

The Vista Quad has already started up this morning and will continue until 4pm. We'll also have Mighty Mite and the Mid-Mountain Chair running today as well. Our five trails remain the same as yesterday including top to bottom skiing and riding on Sherman's Pass to Bear Run.Trails were groomed last night and the snow surface is frozen granular. Skiing and riding for today will end at 4 pm. For all you night owls...night skiing will begin on Wednesday, December 19!
