Favorite Products For Quick Hair Polishing On Set

First up, Loreal Elnett Satin Hairspray. It’s my “old faithful” of hairsprays. It’s been around since the 60’s and has been tried and true. This is a staple in my hair kit as I’m rarely without it.

Pro’s: It has a super fine mist and dries before it hits the hair making it an excellent hairspray for textured hair that has been straightened. It has a great hold and has no build up or flakes. You can spray for major hold then easily brush out to complete a different look if you needed.

Con’s: The smell.  It’s less than desirable. It might just be my nose because I’ve never had a client complain but I like all my stuff to smell like roses.  *kanye shrug*

Pro tip: When using hairspray in general, make sure you hold the can far enough away (about 12 inches or more depending on the formula) so it has time to dry before it hits the hair.

            CHI Twisted fabric is a finishing product generally used to sculpt and mold short cuts and add texture to medium length hair.  This works very well when grooming male clients but I also use it to tame fly aways and add sheen to sleek straightened styles.

Pro’s: It works well on most textures and it smells great. I can get multiple uses with this product including taming fly aways, re twisting natural hair, sculpting male cuts and  taming fly aways.

Con’s: There really aren’t any when used appropriately.

Pro tip: When using to tame fly aways use a tiny amount and emulsify into your palms of your hands before applying to hair.

Biomega Glow Spray is a weightless shine spray to be used when you want to add a hint of sheen to the hair without actually having to touch it. I have very fine hair and can't take lots of shine creating products because they weigh my hair down leaving it lifeless. This product doesn't do that. My hair is left with a beautiful shine and still has movement.

Pro’s: It has a fine mist that won't weigh the hair down, won't leave it greasy and smells great.
Con’s: I have yet to find one.

BONUS ITEM
My current favorite tools to use, and I have a variety, have to be Hot Tool Marcels. They can be used to curl, wave or straighten hair easily,

distribute heat evenly and are quite affordable. Did I mention how affordable they are? Well they are. You can find them for $40 and under in local beauty supply stores and online. If you aren't comfortable using marcel irons they also come with a spring handle option.

Pro’s: Heat can be controlled by dial, it can be used as a clipless iron, heats up quick in under 60 secs and can be used for multiple styles.

Con’s: Some of the irons do not state an exact temperature. It will only show low to extra hot on the dial. This won’t be a problem once you become familiar with your iron and test a section of hair as you should with any heating tool.

Pro tip: Be sure to use the proper heat setting for your hair texture. This will prevent the scorching of hair and ensure you get a proper curl.

Bonus tip: For longevity of your irons be sure to wrap the cords correctly to avoid short circuits.

Makeup Tips For Today's Confident Teen

Wouldn't it be great if there were a magic makeup product we could put on any teenagers face to make them feel beautiful, confident or make them immune to the worlds imperfections? I'd be the worlds first bazillionaire if I could invent it! lol While recording a foundation review , I realized my teenager was "I-spying" over my shoulder. I had to capture the moment as her shirt snapshots her personality perfectly.

Children are always watching, absorbing and emulating what they see and hear. Let's think about that for a second…. By now you realize this has nothing to do with makeup.

With social media continuing to grow in popularity and its major newsfeed contributors being fight videos, fire challenges, silly memes and police brutality shares; it's becoming increasingly difficult to shield the youth from the madness. If you add all of that to the constant makeup shaming, weave shaming, skin color shaming and body shaming onto an already emotional teenage journey to adulthood, you'll find it can be overwhelming. (I thank God Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc were not around when I was a teen.) Being a mother of 3 girls (one being a teenager), I try to fill them up with great mantras to think about daily to balance the worlds craziness.

Here are a few of my favorite mantra's I send my girls away with every morning!

1. Own your awkward
Never be ashamed of what makes you different. Own it and others will love you for it and those who don't never deserved to be in the presence of such "awesomeness" anyway.

2. Dare yourself to ask more questions
Everyone wants to be the one who know's everything but the truth is noone does. Be confident and inquisitive with everyone. The person next to you will silently appreciate it.

3. Be yourself
Why be anyone else? You're awesome!

4. You are only as beautiful as you make others feel
Make sure you leave all those that encounter you along the day with a smile. If your lucky you'll get the same in return.

5. Don't forget to be awesome
Whatever you do and however you do it, don't forget to be AWESOME!…..or at least try.

5 Tips To Conservative Non-Makeup/Makeup Wearers

Every time someone finds out I'm a makeup artist they have one of three responses "oh. I don't wear makeup, just gloss and mascara" or "I don't need that, it looks funny on me" or "Great! Where do I sign up". Out of pure curiosity, I ask reasons why not and it boils down to two main things. 1. They are applying it all wrong and have never had it applied properly or 2. They don't know what to ask for when working with a professional and end up disappointed.

Well here's some news….Not every makeup application has to look overdone with a super sculpted face and etch n sketch brows. We can reserve that for the entertainers and showgirls. For my conservative makeup wearers, here area few tips that will help!

1. "I want my makeup natural" - Although you may think so this is not as descriptive as you'd like to think. Your version of "natural" and say Dolly Parton's version vary……drastically. When working with a professional you should make note to mention how much of your skin will show through the makeup if any. Picture examples are a gals best friend.

2. "Makeup is so heavy" - This may have been true for makeup in the 80's and limited drugstore finds but these days there are so many choices in foundation coverages and finishes. Odds are you are simply heavy handed or haven't found a finish you like. Try applying your concealers and foundations with your ring finger then blending out with a beauty blender or sponge. If it is still too "heavy" mix moisturizer in with the foundation and apply sparingly.

3. "I can't find any colors that work on me" - What's in your closet? I always ask my clients what color clothing do they wear most often. This is usually an indicator of what colors will work well or at the very least what color you might feel comfortable in or be able to contrast with. Lip colors are the easiest ti play with. Be adventurous and try everything until you find something you like. Remember, you can always wash your face later. It's just makeup!

4. "All brows are not created equal" - Seriously this has become an epidemic when the men start noticing and commenting. Put the pencils down and back away slowly. First see a professional and get your brows groomed. If you must use a pencil use it only to fill in underneath the brow and the tail. The front of the brows tells how experienced you are in penciling in brows so if you aren't very, skip it. They shouldn't be overly square or look like they are looking for eggs to fertilize.

5. "I don't do Lashes. Lamb chop is not in this season"-
Please don't make "her" story your story. We've all seen the ladies with the "gone with the wind" fabulous lashes however this doesn't have to be you. There are lashes for every eye and every occasion. They can be custom build and adjusted just for you. When choosing lashes decide first if you are looking to add volume, length, texture or all of the above. For my conservatives choose a natural lash thats shorter in length. The Makeup Show Chicago 2014: Recap

Congratulations to The Makeup Show for another successful run in Chicago! Both days were full of eager makeup artist and enthusiasts looking to expand their current knowledge of makeup and techniques. The Keynote speakers were both informative and inspiring!

I spent most of my day doing makeup and hair for The Makeup Light booth. (See photos below) However I was able to sit in on Renny Vasquez's seminar and speak extensively with Maurice Stein of Cinema Secrets. A huge thank you to everyone who stopped by to wish me a happy birthday! You all made it a great day!

All of the photos taken at the booth were lit by The Makeup Light Vanity or Key light. These lights gave some of the most beautiful artificial day light I've ever seen without the need of a filter.

Pro Tip: All day I was asked about my MUFE flash color palette and glitter I was using. I don't do lots of face paining but I can count on my hand how many times I've used either commercially in the Chicago market…..zero. It's fun to have around for occasions like these though.

So you are going to The Makeup Show : What now?

The Makeup Show will be gracing my wonderful city of Chicago this weekend and I thought I would give you guys a few last minute helpful tips to maximize your money and time.

1. Review your kit
Make note of the products you loved, would like to upgrade, used up and need more of. Don't waste money on things you have no use for and didn't use up within the past 6 months.

2. Set a "like to try" and "needs" budget
…and stick to it! This is very important. If you arrive with an unlimited mind set you will spend until you can't spend anymore.

3. Convenience list
Make note of items you would like that will make your work easier, look better or improve on your convenience.

4. Familiarize yourself with all education classes
Read up on the keynote speakers, free seminars, hands-on classes and focus series session. Because many things are happening at the same time decide what you feel you need to learn and schedule accordingly. It's best to have this mapped out before you get to the show as things move swiftly and you might miss out chatting with friends. This year they've added a focus group session that features a focus on different areas of artist kit building. You will get to test a range of products to decide which items work best for your kit.

5. Network Network Network
Pass out cards, introduce yourself and remember the person you are passing by today could be the person deciding if you "get the job" tomorrow. This is our community and you have to remember to ensure its growth.

Pro tip: Smile A smile can get you a long way! Don't forget to have a great time!!!

"Pick My Brain" : Scott Barnes Hands on Workshop Chicago

Two of my favorite books for inspiration and instruction are "About Face" and "Face to Face" both penned by Scott Barnes. I've read them many times so you can imagine I was more than excited to hear he'd be bringing his hands on workshop to Chicago.

Scott first let the class know that he was all for video recording. This was quite refreshing as most instructors frown upon recording their classes. He did mention that he was sharing his most valued secrets and not to share them with those who did not attend though. So instead of spilling his secrets I'll be sharing my experience through photos. Enjoy!

I picked up all of Scott's Blushers and bronzers to test out. They were all very pigmented with the perfect colors for many skin tones.

Scott delivered very detailed instructions on how to complete a full face with glowing highlights and subtle contouring that remains fluid in appearance and last all day and night.

We were then asked to execute what we learned on our models while he answered more of our questions one on one.

Pro tip: When taking classes always bring a note pad and pen, a camera with a zoom and an open mind. You may think you will remember what you learned but it's always great to review your notes, pictures and practice when you've had some down time.

"Pick My Brain" Merrell Hollis Master class Chicago

If you guys read my first "Pick My Brain" blog post, you'll remember this is a series of post involving both upcoming events and classes I've attended involving education for makeup artist and makeup enthusiast. I've unofficially named myself the "guinea guru" of makeup classes.

I wasn't able to attend The Makeup Show New York this year. So instead of sulking, I decided to find some local classes to attend and avoid my instagram and FB newsfeed until The Makeup Show Chicago. lol I know. Silly right?

My weekend began with Merrell Hollis leading celebrity makeup artist for Wendy Williams and Artistic director for Black Opal Cosmetics, Master class of Beauty. His class was a look and learn put together by Chicago Makeup artist and Event organizer Viola Nicholson.

Merrell applied makeup to the model while encouraging attendees to ask questions about his process. My favorite point of focus from Merrell's demo was the foundation coverage, finish and glow. A very close second would be his highlight and contour technique. It was very specific in placement and you couldn't tell where one product began or ended. Flawless!

He shared a few favorite items that he uses in his kit and mentioned that most makeup artist carry black opal in their kits, it just gets repackaged. I can confess to that one. I've been using black Opal for years for my brown girls and I LOVE it. *side note* You guys should try their new Even True liquid foundation. It has medium coverage and dries to a satin finish and it looks gorgeous!

During the class he mentioned makeup trends and the importance of knowing them for each specific market as well as how they've evolved. As an added bonus Reggie Wells Celebrity Makeup artist ,and former MUA to Oprah, was also in attendance. He spoke on some of his experiences over the years and the importance wanting to be a great makeup artist first and a "celebrity makeup artist" never.

"Thank you Merrell!" was the consensus of the attendees as he wrapped up and was happy to stick around a bit to take photos and chat with everyone.

We also received gift bags with Black Opal Even True foundation, lip gloss, powder, shadow shields and a beauty blender with cleanser. Getting gift bags is great but when you get products you can actually use……It's AMAZING!

Pro tip: Networking is such an important and necessary part of this business. Events like this one are great to bond and catch up with fellow artist.

Americas Beauty Show 2014

I was able to attend the America's Beauty Show chicago this year and capture some video. Check out some of the creative styles and products I ran across.

I found so many great products and tools to try and even learned a few new hair cutting techniques.

I was busy working with International Hair Solutions doing makeup for a couple of their models. Here are two snap shots of their after looks.

Don't get me wrong, this isn't really a post about picking my brain. This will be a series of post involving both upcoming events and classes I've attended involving education for makeup artist and makeup enthusiast. (Be on the look out for future "pick my brain" posts)

This is a online makeup course designed to bridge the gap between the classroom and set. She currently offers two courses (Script breakdown and set etiquette) and (Minding your makeup business). You can find more information on each class as well as payments in the link above. Some of her work credits include films Malcolm X, The Negotiator and Sparkle (2012).

Price $500 (for those of you who need it. That's 3 hours a day for 3 days figures around $55/hr) What a steal!

*My honest opinion: I took Marietta's (Minding your makeup business) this past quarter and I learned a bunch. She was very knowledgeable and covered every subject listed on her site. There were other students in the class as well that were very knowledgeable. I mention that to say this course is great for the beginner to the well informed professional looking for a refresher and great for networking. While I have been known to travel for additional education, after having my last baby, I've had to curb my traveling a bit. Being a working mommy of 3, I really liked that I could take the course online in the comfort of my own home. I was literally cooking, changing diapers and checking homework at the same time! lol (I love to multitask) There were also times where I was not at home and I still was able to participate in class via my cell phone. We were given quizzes and homework assignments all geared to get our proper paperwork together for potential clients and ensure that we be ready for that next resume request or deal memo request. I gave this workshop 4 out of 5 stars…..simply because nothing in life is perfect….it sure was close though. *snickers*

Annnnnnddd I'm Back (Concealer….every girl should own some)

It's been a while….well not that long if you've been following my Facebook page. :) I took a little time to get acclimated to having (the last of my tribe) my baby girl. Now that I've taught her how to entertain herself, got her nap times and feedings down to a science, I can get back to keeping my blog properly updated. Yay for me….and you for you too!

When approaching a makeup application I always like to take a picture to see what the camera sees so I can know exactly what I want to disappear or add too. Camera's tell the tale very honestly. With this model she had very nice skin and I could tell she took care of it. She complained about her under eye area as being hereditary and I agreed. (See if you can guess her nationality. I tried and failed lol) For this shoot I was looking for a very soft, clean beauty look. As you can see concealing her under eye area really brightened up her look!

Although I'm not a "super" huge MAC fan I do LOVE the Pro Longwear concealer. I use this for myself when I only want to brighten up the area under my eyes. I do not put this anywhere else on my face. It's silicone based but also has some water in it. (I imagine its loaded with loads of binders to make that combo work) So if you have super sensitive skin this might be pass worthy. I however LOVE it!

Pros: 1. It provides great coverage with the ability to be used in thin layers to keep the appearance of skin.

2. It's silicone based.

3. Once it dries it's not moving anywhere if powered properly.

4. It contains Glycerin in small amounts. This would be one of those binders I mentioned earlier. Well I personally love glycerin as its a humectant and helps to retain moisture but some of us with super oily skin might want to run away. lol (I still say try it. You can always take it back *snickers*)

Cons: 1. One pump for me is enough for 3 people. lol

2. It's silicone based. Some people have sensitivities to silicone so this will not be an ideal product for you.

Pro tip: Let one layer of product dry before adding another using your ring finger in a light tapping motion. Remember working in thin layers will save your life! ….well maybe it won't do exactly that but you will definitely look like "you woke up like this" lol

"Another Fine day": Sam Fine Interactive Workshop

It was a another fine day in chicago this past Saturday at the Dana Hotel and Spa. "Another Fine Day" Sam Fine interactive workshop that is! Makeup artist came from all over the country to get their fill of makeup knowledge and a bit of networking from renowned artist Sam Fine. Put together by Chicago native Viola Nicholson of Viola Nicholson Image Consulting Group, the workshop was very well put together and proved to be a mecca of education, fellowship and networking!

Product Review: Mehron Celebre Pro Foundation

I'm so excited about my new Celebre HD pro Foundation palette! It's proving to be more versatile than I ever imagined. I was searching for a new foundation (new meaning something I didn't have already) that gave more coverage and were very affordable. After doing the math (because I always do the math) This palette was a steal at a whopping .35 cent a gram. Each pot contains 25 grams of product.

For transporting my foundations, I decided to depot them and place them in a smaller container from Monda Studio. As you can see only a small amount was used to fill each well. This was great news for back! :-))

Check out the pictured tattoo cover below using only Mehron celebre HD Pro Foundations. I didn't color correct or use anything on the skin other than the foundation. I thought it covered very well and did leave the skin looking and feeling like skin. I am more than pleased with my purchase!

Bombshell Tip: This product mixes well with other silicone based products. The Face Atelier product Heat can be mixed with this product to add warmth when needed.

The internet is full of information which often turns out to simply be opinions on products and what things you "must have". When it comes to products, instead of taking someones word for it, why not experiment and come to your own conclusions? This is a common practice for me as I love to try new things! Here's my process!

This post I'll be reviewing 2 solid brush cleaners London Brush Company brush shampoo and The Master's Brush Cleaner and Preserver.

At first glance the two products looked and felt very similar. Both have a solid white appearance with a slight waxy feel but London Brush company appears to have a bit more oil in it. I say this because there was more slip when rubbed between two fingers. Both products had a great fragrance. The Master's Brush Cleaner had a lemon scent that didn't leave a scent in my brushes which I liked. I purchased the London Brush Company solid shampoo in lavender/rosemary. This too did not leave a scent in my brushes. It is a lavender/rosemary mix but I definitely smell more rosemary than lavender.

On to the fun part! Brush shampooing time! First up is The London Brush Company. You first have to dampen your brush and then swirl it into the solid cleanser and work it into the palm of your hand. As you can see it doesn't lather in the container however it does lather in the palm of my hand but not excessively. Surprisingly I did the exact same thing with the Masters Brusher Cleaner and Preserver and it did exactly the same thing. Go figure!

To remain objective I used the same white brush with the same dark colored eyeshadow when cleansing with each product. Both brushes went back to their original state and felt great! I even cleaned two more identical brush mixed them up and I couldn't tell which brush had been cleaned with what. Both cleansers left my brushes feeling soft and well moisturized. I also cleaned a few other brushes that had dried gel liner on them and they both cleaned like a charm! Folks I think we have a dupe!

(drying time: Both took at least 20 to 30 minutes to dry small brushes and longer for bigger fluffier brushes)

The only thing that concerns me is I haven't been able to find an ingredient list for the Masters Brush cleaner. I like to know what's in my cleansers. It allows me to make sure I can avoid certain skin allergies prior to use. The London Brush company has their ingredients printed on the container which I love!!! Because I'm an avid supporter of small business' I will continue to support The London Brush Company. They have some of the softest brushes and are cruelty free!

*Update* Here's a pricing tidbit for you: The London Brush Company cost $38 for 2oz retail and The Master's Brush Cleaner and Preserver cost $3.99 for 1oz or $20 for 24 oz. Wowzers!

I won't have to buy anymore solid cleanser for a very long time as I have 5 ounces and a little product goes a loooooong way! I'm very pleased with both purchases! I found both to be excellent cleansers and I'd repurchase both when I need to......but don't take my word for it! Try them out yourself!

The Makeup Show : Chicago

The Makeup Show Chicago proved to be an event not worth missing! From the wonderful vendors and knowledgable educators to the massive network of eager makeup artists, it was a one stop shop for all things cosmetic. On Day one I decided to set my focus on education and picked up a few items that needed to be replaced. Most of those items were skin care items, cosmetic cleansers, brushes, organizational supplies and sponges.

I picked up some Cinema Secrets brush cleaner, So clean spray brush cleaner, London brush cleaner, Beauty blender cleanser and additional beauty blenders. Can you tell I love to clean brushes! lol on my list of wants I ended up picking up a few cosmetic products to test out including a neutral eye shadow palette I've been eyeballing for a while now. I'll be sure to update you guys with reviews on everything!

My Makeup Show Haul

Kathy Aragon teaching (perfecting the canvas class)

I took a hands-on workshop with Kathy Aragon called perfecting the canvas. In it she discussed the steps she takes to achieve the perfect glow and what products she couldn't live without. I was happy to know we love some of the same things! Face Atelier being one of them! Her application was very clean and detailed leaving the skin looking very supple and natural. She also spoke of the importance of knowing what base your skin care and makeup products are. For me this answers why some products separate and don't work well together. Remember water and oil don't mix. :-))

The Key Note speaker Billy B and Nicole Rogers

The Key note speaker Billy B was a fan favorite on day 2. He's works with some industry heavy weights such as Lady Gaga, Pink, Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige, and Beyonce to name a few..... very few. He rocks! He spoke of knowing your end game in his "Career GPS" lecture and getting rid of your career side seat drivers. It was a motivational kick in the ass that so many needed hear including my self. Billy was so informative and humble. If you missed it be sure to check it out on Beautylish.com when they post it.

20+ artist met for dinner at the Grand Lux Fun times!

After The Makeup Show I went out to dinner with 20 fellow makeup artist from all over. We sat, we laughed and we ate until about 10:30pm. It truly was a wonderful experience as everyone got along and it was all in the name of makeup! Cool right? I met so many wonderful ladies with beautiful spirits! I was truly in great company!

The Makeup Show: Blogger Preview Chicago

I had the opportunity to attend the Blogger preview this year in Chicago and you guys are in store for a great show! James Vincent ,director of artistry and education for the makeup show, welcomed the group with a jolly grin and love for the midwest. If you've ever had the pleasure of meeting James you already know he has an infectious smile and great attitude.

He gave us the run down of The Makeup Show while showing us this years must have products most of which were included in our swag bags. Can you say AWESOME? Instead of boring you with a complete list of products I'll be reviewing each of them separately in future blog post starting with OCC cosmetics newest lip tar (Radiate). It's their latest lip tar that can be used as a cheek color, lip color and on the eyes in limited cases. I met up with some great ladies while there too. Individual lashes (strip glue) by Nicole Rogers

This is such a touchy subject.....Eyelashes! How long do you wear yours and how do you apply them? I've recently been exposed to the world of using hair glue or nail glue to bond eyelashes. You cannot imagine my shock and surprise. First off "where they do dat at?" lol I can't say this enough, if this is something you are currently doing to yourself.....please stop. If this is something you are letting someone else do to you open your eyes (if you can) then run fast and run far.

Well lucky for you I'm here to help!

Individual lashes (Ind. lash glue) by Nicole Rogers

Here are some eyelash facts and Intended usage of eyelash glue:

*Strip lash glue last for the occasion and is heavier and able to hold Individual lashes, normal strip lashes and fantasy lashes. It comes in black (dries black) and white (dries clear). It usually has latex in it and dries to a rubbery texture.

*Individual lash glue last for up to 2 weeks and is a lighter weight compared to strip lash glue. It can only hold individual lashes and should NEVER be used with anything else. It comes in black and clear. The wearer's longevity depends on the individual's oil production and lifestyle. (If you do "hot yoga" several times a week, odds are your lashes will not last to long) It dries clear and hardens once completely dry. You should ALWAYS use a glue remover with this product.

*Lash Extension glue can last the natural life cycle of your lashes (1 month or more). Keep in mind your lashes are always growing and falling out. Touch up's will be needed every couple weeks to maintain the look. It is the thinnest of all the glues and dries hard. It does look very natural as the lashes are applied to each individual hair. Removal should be done by a professional.

Please be advised that using any glue that is not intended for use in the eye area is dangerous business. Don't let your hunt for a good deal put your eyes at risk.

Bombshell Best buys of 2011!

Each year I go through my yearly purchases and determine what the "best buys" and "bust" were. This helps me determine what products I use most often and should be on the "discount" hunt for. Below are a few of my favorites of 2011!

Kryolan palette

This has to be my favorite shadow palette. It has the perfect amount of shimmer to it. I use it on the eyes as well as the face. My brides love it!

Makeup Forever Aqua Lip pencils
These are my favorite pencils for my brides! Waterproof and they give the perfect base to a long lasting lip for blushing brides.

OCC Lip Tars

A little bit goes a long way with these little wonders. They are highly pigmented and I use them in a variety of ways. You can check out my review here.

Although I love products, I always spend money on education. This way my clients can rest easily in knowing I'm staying on top of my makeup and hair skills.

Petra Alexandra Inc"All about eyes" class

I took this class May of last year during my annual trip to New York. I learned all I could about brows and couldn't be happier with my investment. You can read more about it here.

I'm well on my way with 2012's purchases and haven't been disappointed yet. My next big buy will be hair related. I've got my eye's on America's Beauty show. I can't wait!

Oh What A Night!: Illamasqua launch at Kryolan City Chicago

I had the pleasure of attending the Kryolan City Chicago "Evening with Illamasqua" event last night. There were lots of fab artist in attendance.......as well as...you got it....MAKEUP! Of course I had a great time!

The event was held at the Kryolan store (north Chicago) on Halsted. This was surprisingly my first time making it out to the Kryolan store as it's a little far from me. I do plan to make a return visit or 2 or 3 very soon! They were gracious enough to give gift swag bags away to each guest. I received a full sized pure pigment in Incite, a $30 gift cert and a makeup corrector stick. Can you say AWESOME? lol

Skin Base is a wonderful water based foundation almost undetectable in HD. Great coverage, fully buildable and blended perfectly into my skin. I'll be picking up a few for my kit when I reach baller status which should be very soon. lol

If you haven't given the store a visit, I would highly recommend doing so! The staff is informative and the owners are sooooo nice! I love spending money in establishments where they truly appreciate it! By the way I did buy a makeup brush while at the event. I couldn't help myself! I needed a new flat shader! lol

Holiday Makeup Looks: It's a party!!!

It's that time of year again! Holiday party time!!! This is not as simple for some, as their makeup choice could prove to be a problem. Don't worry! I'm here to help!

Here are a few tips to help select your makeup for the holiday season!

DO keep it simple. (Less is definitely more)

DO pick your best feature to enhance (eyes,lips, cheeks)

DO enhance your look with False Lashes (every diva needs lashes)

DON'T be afraid to try something different (remember you can always wash it off)

DO get your brows groomed ( by a professional or someone you trust)

For the first look I decided to keep her skin simple with an emphasis on her eyes and brows. I used colors from the Urban decay palette on her eyes. The gold really puts an emphasis on her lid and with the use of the darker brown in the crease added a deeper dimension to her eye shape. This is a look that can be worn just about anywhere!

For the second look I simply added Makeup forever's eyeshadow #92 Purple in the corners of her eyes to spice things up for the chic chica on the go. I also used the same shadow to add a hint of color to the cheeks.

Both lips were created using OCC cosmetics primary colors. There's so much versatility in their line of cosmetics! Check them out!

Curly Hair and Don't Care

I decided to try a new hairstyle which always strikes fear into my husbands heart! lol He never knows exactly where my head is for the week ie: afro, straight weave, blow out, curly weave or braids. The list could go on and on. He says it's like waking up to a different women everyday. *raises eyebrow* lol

I decided to try out a Bantu twist out. (Pictured left) I chose to double strand twist each section before twisting into knots but I think I made the sections too small because I was concerned about frizz control. As it turns out the smaller knots made for more smaller curls that lasted until I realized.....I don't like small curls or frizz. lol

I fixed my dislikes by curling each section with a small 13mm barrel round Enzo wand. I was careful not to include my ends because I'm always conscious of and trying to avoid split ends.

This was the result after using the iron. I loved the volume the bantu twist out created but not the frizz. This gave me more of a controlled curl and lots of shine!

Products used: Mixed chicks leave in conditioner and Dudley's Setting lotion.

Memphis the Musical

I had the pleasure of viewing the Musical Memphis last night and I was blown away by the amount of talent exhibited on stage! This Musical won the Tony award last year for best musical. Let me first start off by saying my husband surprised me with this lovely event and I was quite shocked when he mentioned that he really enjoyed it as well! (That's saying something as he usually doesn't like musicals.lol) Back to the musical!

The musical was a love story set in the 1950's era between two unlikely characters for the time. A local white Dj (Huey) Bryan Fenkart and a black night club singer (Felicia) Felicia Boswell trying to make something of themselves. The soundtrack reminds you of a time where "musical was real" full of rhythm and blues. Felicia Boswell has one of those voices you won't forget! It's a must see!

Of course this post would not be complete without commenting on the hair, makeup and wardrobe!
The costumes were a fantastic capture of the 1950's. Felicia's stage costumes showed the elegance of the 50's with tailored dresses and beading. The teens had poodle skirts, and men sported patterned sweaters, polo's and slacks.

I really get the fifties vibe from her hair and makeup which was executed fabulously! Her brows are highly arched to a point with winged/doe liner and a heavily lined matte red lip. I'd actually wear this look and adapt it to fit my own style by blending the lip liner a bit and adding a little gold shimmer to highlight my cheeks for extra added glow.

Old Looks Anew! : Period makeup

It's been said, if you don't know your past you are doomed to repeat it. Well in the case of beauty, being doomed isn't so bad! Over the years many artist (music and makeup) pull inspiration from old Hollywood starlets. These references often go lost on those who aren't familiar with looks from the past but are directly effected by the trends they create. In order to help you guys out with a few references, I've decided to use Beyonce.Beyonce is one of this generations iconic musical artist. She's been known for her chameleon like changes between albums but I know her best for her constant references to classic period makeup looks.......it's a personal hobby of mine. I'll share a few of my favorites with you (I have dozens)!

Up top you'll see a head nod to the 1920's. I used Clara bow (actress) to show the similarities between looks. Notice the down turned over extended brow along with the dark lip and cupids bow. This is a classic look with an updated twist executed to perfection!

The 1950's were used for inspiration in the photo next to Dorothy Dandridge. Notice the sharp arch of the brow defined to a point. In the photo, Dorothy Dandridge has a soft winged liner and defined brow where Beyonce is sporting an exaggerated winged/Doe tip liner for the eye. An updated trick to an old trend.

The 1960's were an explosion of creativity and color! Elizabeth Taylor's performance as Cleopatra in 1963 was an updated look from the Egyptian era and was used as inspiration in 2007 for Alexander Mcqueen's collection for MAC. Beyonce took inspiration in 2008 and used it as a catalyst for her "I am Sasha fierce" album. It's a very beautiful strong eye with a pop of color and light lip.

The sixties also spawned a wave of spider lashes and rounded cut creases to give the eye more of a rounded effect. Beyonce looks fab in this Twiggy inspired look and also has my favorite brow look for her to date. Kim Kardashian is bringing this look back with her use of spider lashes for her red carpet appearances.

I love finding inspiration in all things but digging into the past can prove to be quite inspirational. My next stop shall be to raid my mothers closet. She has clothes in there that are well over 30 years old. (Don't judge) lol

Fun Funky Summer Colors: OCC Lip tars

Even though the trend has moved to a soft orange lip, I suspect this year will go down as "the year of the super pink lip"! I've seen all tones, vibrancy and color combo's. I began to find it quite difficult to keep up...... until I started using OCC lip tars!

These little gem's are packaged like gloss but are opaque lipstick with a satin finish. By usi

ng the primary colors (Pictured left) you can create any color under the sun. For those of you challenged in the mixing area they have a total of 39 colors ranging for the wildest vixen to the timid chica.

I created a few colors (pictured right) I didn't use any lip liners or lip primers to create these looks only lip tar. I wanted you guys to see how pigmented they were and easily blendable on the lip. Imagine the possibilities!

found you can also use these like lip stains as they are suuuuper pigmented. (not pictured)

Suggestions for application: A little goes a loooong way. Use a pin drop amount and pat the lip with fingers for use as a stain. For more opaque application use a lip brush and apply in layers.
