I was at the NAMM show about 3 years ago. Actually through Bogie Bowles, Joe’s drummer. Joe was at an event for James Brown’s band, after James had passed away. Joe was backstage and Bogie introduced me to Joe. Of course, I knew about Joe and he knew my work with Trapeze and Deep Purple, he’s such a classic rock fan. I found Joe to be very personable and a very likeable fella and was very fascinated with how he was working. Bogie’s one of my dear friends, so we became friends through Bogie, and over the course of the last 3 years, Joe and I and Bogie we sort of were jamming and playing and what have you, and it got to the point where, you know, we became really good friends. As you know, as history now knows, Joe was playing in the House of Blues last November and he asked me come down to sit in on a couple of songs. Joe asked me if we could play two of my songs; one was Mistreated from Deep Purple, the other being Medusa from Trapeze. And the rest is rock and roll history!

I like a little danger, so I thought “You know, yeah, let’s go with it” and of course Joe said yes. And Joe and I came up with the songs before January the 3rd (the sessions in Malibu). I had a little bit more time on my hands than Joe and Joe asked me to come up with a couple of songs for foundation reasons. So I was down in South America in Brazil last December and I took my guitar down there. I came up with 3 or 4 songs and crossed my fingers hoping that this would be the foundation that would spare the band in January. Joe came up with the first part of the song Black Country which is insane and we went in (to the studio) and recorded the songs and actually came up with One Last Soul, Beggarman, No Time, and Stand. And we cut Medusa and it was fun. And like I said, the rest of it, Joe and I got together at my home and we wrote pretty much the rest of the album in that format.

Sort of the birthplace of British Rock: Zeppelin, Sabbath, Trapeze, Judas Priest, Steve Winwood. They all hail from this area, sort of like the Detroit of America. So when we sat out, I googled “is there a band called Black Country?” and no! There was a Black Country brass band and a place called The Black Country. So Jason that week was down at the NAMM show and he was in an interview and someone in YouTube said “We’re called Black Country”. Little did we know there’s a band in Baltimore, Maryland called “Black Country”. Of course they contacted our lawyer and explained “you can’t use the name”. We had no intention of stealing anybody’s name, we’re not that kind of people. So I came up with the idea of adding a name (a word) at the end of Black Country rather than “band”, or “group”, or “combo”; “communion” was a pretty nice word.
Here is a sneak peek at the official Black Country Communion album. The official release date is September 21st. This picture comes to us from Alexis, who works for Joe’s management. They are just starting to get the official release discs in. And just to confirm with everyone – all copies come with the DVD. I was told that is how they are all packaged. I hope that can clear up some confusion.

Coming to stores on October 19th will be the release of Live from Royal Albert Hall in Blu-Ray. By releasing the show in Blu-Ray, those who have 720p or 1080p TV’s with Blu-Ray players will be able to experience the concert in high definition.

This was speculated to happen after the concert was broadcasted on Palladia in HD. That proved to all of us that HD footage was out there, just not available to the general public as of yet. Within the next two weeks, advertising will kick off promoting the new release. Stay tuned!

According to Slash, Joe Bonamassa is his new favorite guitarist. It’s quite impressive how big Joe has become amongst other guitar players. Look at what has happened for Joe over the past 10 years! Anyways, here is the message Slash posted on his twitter:

“Just saw Joe Bonamassa on Jools Holland again. He’s definitely my new favorite guitarist.”

Joe and Slash met a while ago, was a few years ago actually. If I remember correctly, it was at a convention. Here is a picture from that convention of Joe and Slash together – pulled it out from the archives.

Joe and the band just recently finished up recording at Black Rock Studios. It is believed that they were recording material for a new upcoming album. As you may remember from our previous updates, a lot has been happening at Black Rock Studios.

Joe Bonamassa is pictured above playing a fancy looking guitar. He used this guitar to record a track called “Dustbowl”. I don’t know if the tune is an original or cover. There wasn’t any information that indicated Dustbowl to be a cover, it could be an original.

Above we have a picture of Peter Van Weelden. He is the mastermind behind Van Weelden amps and Joe Bonamassa’s “Twinkleland.” It has also been said that Peter has contributed to the recording that occurred at Black Rock Studios. So far this recording session has turned out to be a very interesting one from what we have seen. Stay tuned for updates as they become available.

Joe recently released a new website targeted towards Japanese fans. The new site sports a completely different look from Joe’s official English site. It appears to be that the Japanese site will be more of a blog. It will have news about Joe and updates from Joe on the road. The updates from the road will be featured in the “Black Rock Tour Diary”. The Japanese site is a great idea since Joe released a special edition album just for Japan, which has two bonus tracks on it. You can visit the website here.
