For five students with special needs from Riverdale High School, the garden " which the students are installing and maintaining " is an opportunity to learn a skill that could lead to a vocation.

The students, 16 to 18 years old, began working with Verandah's golf and grounds maintenance crew in late February and are visiting the 1,456-acre community, located along the Orange River in Fort Myers, twice a week. The garden is located within the community's River Village, where it will be accessible to all Verandah residents.

"The students were so excited about this project," said Sona Dowdy, a job coach specialist with the Lee County School District. "They've never been exposed to a garden."

"This is their garden " from start to finish," said Steve Bill, director of golf and grounds maintenance at Verandah. "Not only are they helping us create it, they'll also maintain it."

Installing plants that attract butterflies will likely continue through the remainder of the school year, said Bill. "Right now, we're digging holes for the plants and learning what each student is capable of contributing. The students are doing great so far, and my team members are really enjoying working with them."

The students, who are accompanied by a teacher's assistant during their Tuesday and Thursday visits, will soon be welcomed to the team when they receive "official" Verandah uniform shirts. "We're taking pictures because we want to give them a scrapbook at the end of the school year that chronicles their work and the garden's progress," said Bill.

The garden measures approximately 500 square feet and is located between the River House and Boat House in Verandah's River Village. "I'm really glad we were able to offer this project, and I hope we can continue to work with different students each school year," said Bill.

The Exceptional Student Education program is offered in most of Lee County's high schools and classroom sizes range from 12 to 25 students, who can participate until their 22nd birthday. Life Skills classes are designed to provide work experience and teach students long-term skills.

"Our goal is to expose these students to job skills so they can find paid employment and eventually live as independently as possible," Dowdy said. "We have some students working in a retirement home, learning skills like changing, laundering and folding linen. These are skills they will use in their lives."

Finding work-related opportunities at Lee County's more remote high schools like Riverdale is sometimes a challenge, Dowdy said. "We have huge community support from companies including Publix and Winn-Dixie. This project at Verandah exposes students to work experience outside of a grocery store environment. It's something different for us," she said.

It's not the first time Bonita Bay Group has welcomed young adults with special needs at its communities: Students from Estero High School have worked with Bonita Bay's golf maintenance department and in the kitchen at Rosie Spoonbill's restaurant at The Brooks.

"Exceptional Student Education is a wonderful program offered by Lee County Schools," said Kitty Green, president and CEO of Bonita Bay Group. "We're always pleased to find ways to partner with these programs while helping students learn valuable job skills."

Verandah, created as an environmentally friendly and sustainable community, has earned environmental accolades for its emphasis on green building and preservation, its respect for the land and its comprehensive approach to sustainability. Since being named Florida's first green land development by the Florida Green Building Coalition in April 2003 " two months after sales began " Verandah has received the Council for Sustainable Florida's 2007 Best Practices Award for green building, the Florida Urban Forestry Council's Trees Florida 2007 Award, Project EverGreen's Because Green Matters Award, and the Florida Association of Realtors' 2006 Environmental (ENVY) Award.

The 1,456-acre community, located along a 1.75-mile stretch of the Orange River in Fort Myers, has also been named by Where to Retire magazine as one of "America's 100 Best Master-Planned Communities" in 2007 and was named Community of the Year by the Lee Building Industry Association in 2005 and 2008. Whispering Oak, Verandah's second 18-hole championship golf course, was named by Golf Inc. magazine as one of the top five new private courses in the country in 2007.

Each single-family model home at Verandah has been constructed to meet the Florida Green Building Coalition's requirements for green home certification, and residents have the ability to choose construction and feature options that conserve natural resources, improve indoor air quality and reduce energy consumption.

Verandah's single-family homebuilders are offering increased energy efficiency through Florida Power & Light Company's BuildSmart? program. Structured wiring is being built into each home to facilitate always-on, high-speed Internet access, as well as a wide range of options for home automation.

Nearly 70 percent of Verandah's 1,456 acres will be open space, including natural preserve areas, parks, wetlands, lakes, golf courses and a conservation buffer to help maintain the unique character of the community's riverfront. Verandah will offer more than nine miles of walkways, paths and fitness trails.

Verandah's amenities are located in River Village, the community's social hub with individual buildings nestled into an expansive oak hammock. The amenities include the Golf House pro shop; Oak Park with the community treehouse and playground; the Boat House, featuring Blossom's community grill, a canoe and kayak livery and multi-level decks overlooking the river; tennis and fitness center; and the River House, featuring Jesse Fish lounge, the 120-seat Alligator Pear restaurant and the open-air River Terrace overlooking the river.

Old Orange, Verandah's first 18-hole championship golf course designed by award-winning golf course architect Bob Cupp, was inspired by the spectacular oak trees throughout the site. Whispering Oak, designed by Jack Nicklaus and Jack Nicklaus II, opened in early 2007.

Membership in the New Leaf Wine Club is an exclusive, complimentary benefit for residents of all Bonita Bay Group communities. The Wine Club offers wine tastings, dinners, classes and excursions, as well as special pricing on an exceptional collection of wines.

Verandah offers estate, custom and traditional single-family homes, villas and coach homes with home and homesite packages priced from the low $200,000s to more than $1 million. For a limited time, Bonita Bay Group is underwriting a limited number of buyer incentives that include club memberships along with HOA master association fees through 2010 for contracts signed by April 30, 2009. Their combined contribution represented more than a fifth of the $8,019,741 campaign total.

Bonita Bay residents, who first began raising money for United Way in 1998, made the second largest contribution to this year's campaign " $866,000 " second only to Publix Super Markets for the ninth consecutive year. Bonita Bay Group employee pledges were matched dollar for dollar by Chairman David Lucas, generating $446,000 and a third-place ranking on the list of the top United Way contributors.

"The ongoing success of Bonita Bay Group's corporate campaigns, which began in 1990, is based on David's example and personal involvement," said United Way President Cliff Smith. "He participates in all United Way presentations to employees and has been an active member of our board of directors for more than 15 years." Lucas founded the United Way's Alexis de Tocqueville Society, reserved for those who contribute at least $10,000 annually, in 1991. This year there are 138 de Tocqueville-level contributors, and 59 are employees or residents of Bonita Bay Group communities.

When Bonita Bay residents ran the region's first community campaign, they not only raised $64,000 but also created a model for United Way giving in master-planned communities. This year, 14 Lee County communities ran United Way campaigns, including The Brooks in Bonita Springs, which ranked seventh with $198,000, and Mediterra in North Naples, which was ninth at $180,000. Verandah residents in Fort Myers organized their third United Way campaign and raised $61,000, and the inaugural campaign at Sandoval in Cape Coral raised $2,300.

The United Way of Lee, Hendry and Glades has been "the way the community cares" since it was established in 1957. During the last half-century, $88 million has been raised and used locally to support United Way partner agencies and initiatives like Alvin A. Dubin Alzheimer's Resource Center, Children's Advocacy Center, Big Brothers Big Sisters, LARC and the United Way 211 helpline. United Way also promotes partnerships and collaborations among agencies and initiatives, helping them to work together, focus on critical issues and improve lives. This scenery is showcased throughout much of the 3,459 square feet of the Sienna, a new single-family model home built by Divco Construction Corp. in the Hedgestone neighborhood of Grand Arbors at TwinEagles.

The four-bedroom, four-and-one-half bath Sienna, Divco's first model in TwinEagles, overlooks the fairway and bunkers of The Aerie's 16th hole, embracing the lifestyle that brings many homebuyers to Southwest Florida. Courses by Player and Jack Nicklaus and Jack Nicklaus II and TwinEagles' natural setting have been recognized by leading magazines and environmental groups, and golf is the top pastime for residents here.

The Sienna has 5,223 total square feet, including a three-car garage, covered entry and a lanai oriented to the views. The model has granite and marble countertops; grass cloth on walls, ceilings and art niches; and freestanding interior columns between the foyer and dining room.

The Sienna's architecture is accented with cast keystone, stacked El Dorado stone and arched windows. It has a study with a wood floor, a formal dining room and powder room.

The great room offers a built-in bar with a wine cooler, a flat-screen TV and onyx countertops, and its ceiling is accented with cypress beams. Sliding glass doors open onto the 872-square-foot lanai, which has seating and dining areas and a summer kitchen with a built-in gas grill, refrigerator, fireplace and a tongue-and-groove cypress ceiling with boxed beams.

Doors from the master suite, dinette and a guest room also open to the al fresco spaces.

The pool has a raised tiled wall with stepped built-in planters, water jets and a sheer descent waterfall. It also has a raised spa and a built-in bench facing the golf course.

The master suite has his-and-her walk-in closets, and its large bath offers a linen closet, a water closet, a jetted raised tub and a separate shower with a built-in bench and dual controls and showerheads.

The kitchen features an under-counter microwave oven drawer, a center island with glass doors and a six-burner gas cook top with pot filler. Additional stainless steel appliances include a dishwasher, oven and a side-by-side refrigerator above a freezer drawer. Instead of a pantry, extra storage space is incorporated into the cabinetry.

The adjoining dinette has a built-in desk area and a bayed window overlooking the water and golf views.

Each of the Sienna's guest suites has a full bath and one is shown as a sitting room with two sleeper sofas and golf-themed wallpaper.

The utility room has a front-loading washer and dryer, white cabinetry with paneled doors and granite countertops.

The Sienna features interior design by Kathleen Scanlan, ASID, and is priced at $1,599,900, fully furnished.

Bonita Bay Group is developing TwinEagles in keeping with its ongoing commitment to meticulous planning, environmental stewardship, integrity and attention to detail. The family owned and operated company has created Southwest Florida's top amenity-rich communities for more than 25 years.

The 1,115-acre Naples community was included in Links Magazine's 2008-09 Premier Properties issue in the best-for-club-life category, named to Golf & Travel magazine's list of the 12 Most Intriguing Golf Communities in America, was included in Travel + Leisure Golf's list of the top 100 golf communities in America for three consecutive years and received a top award from the Council for Sustainable Florida. The Club at TwinEagles is certified by Audubon International as a Signature Sanctuary and is the only private club in Florida with courses designed by two living legends, Nicklaus and Player.

The Estates, the first phase of TwinEagles, includes single-family estate homes along the Nicklaus and Nicklaus II co-designed golf course, The Talon. Furnished estate home models are priced from $2,750,000. Each of these homes is situated to create an extraordinary sense of privacy with view corridors unobstructed by other homes.

Grand Arbors at TwinEagles features 648 coach homes, villas and single-family homes overlooking lakes, nature preserves and The Aerie. Its neighborhoods are linked by nature trails, green spaces and parks. Grand Arbors homes are priced from the $200,000s to more than $2 million.

Two themed botanical parks in Grand Arbors are named for the plant life that gives them their character. The Palmery has more than a dozen species of palms, a hedge maze and shaded seating beneath a vine-wrapped pergola. The Fernery is enclosed by a hedge, has the sky as a ceiling and features dense green ferns, colorful bromeliads and benches surrounding a center fountain.

Residents and nonresidents are eligible for membership in The Club at TwinEagles, which offers a 47,000-square-foot clubhouse with casual and formal dining.

He has also been recognized as one of the Top 20 Greatest Teachers in America by Golf Digest and a National PGA Teacher of the Year. Suttie's training employs the principles of biomechanics using state-of-the-art equipment and computer video analysis to improve all facets of the game.

But it took three years, Steve's retirement and the sale of their Bronx home before the family of four finally made the move last summer.

"We visited back and forth for three years, any chance we could get," said Steve, a former detective who retired in 2007 after 20 years with the New York City Police Department. "It was on our dream agenda to retire to Sandoval. Then, as my retirement got closer to reality we started thinking about our future."

The Talcovitzes, renters in Sandoval's Somerville neighborhood since last summer, recently bought a single-family home, becoming the 650th buyer since the community opened for sales in January 2005. They hope to move into their new home in the Sutherland neighborhood this summer.

The sale pushes Sandoval past the 40 percent sold mark, said Debbie Holm Sheeley, general manager of community operations, who also noted the 524-acre community was an anomaly in the Cape Coral real estate market last year " posting an increase in sales from 2007 to 2008. She said sales have continued to exceed projections and noted that the community's first phase is more than 90 percent sold.

Sandoval is being created by Bonita Bay Group, celebrating more than 25 years of award-winning community development in Southwest Florida.

Since their first visit three years ago, Steve, Martha and their two children, Melanie, 18, and Zachary, 13, have seen Sandoval grow.

"It's really gone from nothing with just a couple of model homes to the amenities and pool," said Steve. "We fell in love with the community and what the future was going to look like."

Today, all of Sandoval's amenities are in place, including a one-acre dog park, a two-mile linear park with benches and landscaping, and the community center, offering a fitness center, the award-winning Lagoon Pool and play areas and fields.

"We almost bought a year and a half ago but waited," said Steve. "We needed to sell our home in the Bronx. It just wasn't meant to be at the time."

Even when their home sold, the family proceeded cautiously, opting to rent first.

"We wanted to get a feel for the community," Steve said. "Coming down on vacation and living here are two different things. This was going to be a major life-changing step."

Waiting has proven worthwhile: Home prices have adjusted and Bonita Bay Group is paying homeowners association fees through 2010.

"Construction prices have come down since we first thought of buying 18 months ago," said Steve. "It was a no-brainer. It just worked in our favor."

The family, which includes a 13-year-old German shepherd, is getting acclimated to Florida and the Sandoval lifestyle. Melanie is a freshman at Edison State College, Zachary attends Challenger Middle School and Martha is a paraprofessional at Challenger Middle School. For now, Steve is enjoying retirement, "doing a whole lot of nothing."

While the rest of his family makes new friends, Steve has been reunited with an old police pal " a fellow cadet at the academy. The two got reacquainted during a meeting of the 1013 Club, a group of transplanted retired New York City officers.

"I walked into the club the first time and heard, Talcovitz?,'" Steve said. "And I looked at him and said, Rock? Oh my God.' We were in the police academy together in 1987. It's funny because you usually don't see your fellow cadets again, and here we both were in Florida."

Steve plans to pursue his love of fishing with the club, which sponsors regular fishing outings and barbecues.

At Sandoval, a casual lifestyle, tropical feel and community center with a spectacular pool and amenities evoke images of an island resort. Parks and play places have something for everyone, even the four-pawed family members, and two miles of sidewalks unfurl the length of the linear park perfect for walkers, joggers and sunset watchers.

Sandoval, where residents say life is like being on vacation every day without ever having to leave home. The gated community, located in the heart of Cape Coral, is being developed by Bonita Bay Group, the first in the company's family of master-planned communities with a Cape Coral address.

Sandoval features highly respected builders, with a large selection of model homes, dozens of floor plans and Bonita Bay Group's nationally recognized commitment to quality and excellence.

Sandoval offers carriage homes, single-family homes and villas with home and homesite packages priced from the mid-$100,000s. Single-family homesites range from 44 by 130 feet to 70 by 130 feet. Every neighborhood has city water and sewer service in place and assessments are already paid.

Vibrant colors add to the island ambience at Club Sandoval with the 5,319-square-foot community center and water features that include the 7,500-square-foot Lagoon Pool. One of the largest in Lee County, the free-form pool received a gold in the Semipublic Pools category from Association of Pool & Spa Professionals International Awards of Excellence 2007. The pool is designed with a zero-edge, a gently sloped entry, and a children's splash and play area with spray hoops and tumble buckets that rotate and spill water. A favorite at the pool is The Chute, a 100-foot water slide that drifts through a tropical forest of palms and plants before it ends in the water. Nearby is the nautically themed Shipwreck Cove, a tot lot with a pirate ship to explore, as well as the "Quiet Cove," complete with chairs and umbrellas for when residents need time for leisurely reflection.

The community center also offers a multi-purpose room with tables, chairs and audio-visual capabilities, fitness center and locker rooms with showers, and a catering kitchen for celebrations, private parties and community events. For the outdoor enthusiasts, the club features a sand volleyball court, four lighted tennis courts, full basketball court, multi-purpose field and bocce court.

Families, singles, empty nesters and second-home buyers are drawn to Sandoval's vacation atmosphere with amenities to match. The two-mile long Esplanade walking and jogging path is a tree-lined linear park, 22 acres and 70 feet wide, with park benches, shade trees and landscaping with low berms. The 4.5-acre Calypso Park has grills and covered picnic areas, pathways and a fishing pier extending into the 22-acre Calypso Lake, and one acre is set aside for Barkley Park, a special fenced-in place created for dogs to romp and play.

With gated entries, winding streets, sidewalks and 20 lakes, Sandoval is being developed in three phases. Phase I is planned with 579 homes, and Phase II, which opened for sales in January 2006, is planned with 541 homes. At build-out, Sandoval will have 1,579 homes, all by Sandoval's preferred builders.

Bonita Bay Group and EMBARQ bring state-of-the-art, fiber-to-the-home technology to each home in Sandoval. The highly reliable fiber optics greatly enhance the ability to browse the Internet, send and receive large data files and enjoy the benefits of Information-Age communication tools.

Membership in the New Leaf Wine Club is an exclusive, complimentary benefit for residents of all Bonita Bay Group communities. The Wine Club offers wine tastings, dinners, classes and excursions, as well as special pricing on an exceptional collection of wines.

Sandoval is located in one of the most desirable areas within Cape Coral, the second fastest growing city in the nation, with easy access to shopping, dining, Fort Myers, Pine Island and business centers. Residents may also walk, bike or drive to the nearby Cape Coral Sports Complex, which has five adult softball fields, four regulation baseball fields, five soccer fields and concession stands. A network of sidewalks and pathways connect neighborhoods with parks, amenities and future retail areas just outside Sandoval's gates. The sidewalks will also connect to neighboring Trafalgar Elementary and Middle schools, allowing children the choice of walking to school.

Located in Mediterra's Verona neighborhood, the four-bedroom, four-and-one-half-bath custom home built by Harwick Homes offers layered lake, golf and nature preserves " displayed from a 1,245-square-foot covered lanai and picture windows and sliding glass doors.

The Antica has 7,624 total square feet, including the lanai, an entry portico, three-car garage and a private covered lanai off the master suite. It has formal living and dining rooms and a study, and features decorative tile and woodwork and two fireplaces.

Mediterra is the 1,697-acre master-planned community created by Bonita Bay Group, a Southwest Florida developer with more than 25 years experience building communities that exceed expectations.

The Antica's concrete paver driveway, in shades of terracotta, sienna and charcoal, circles around a landscaped garden with palms and bougainvillea. Its fa?ade is accented with arches, columns and precast crown molding and corbels. Each of the three garage doors has a precast frame and a wood finish.

Steps lead up to the portico, defined by two free-standing columns and multiple arches. Double wood-framed glass doors have a wrought-iron overlay and are topped by all-glass fanlights, also with iron accents.

The Antica's Spanish-meets-the-Caribbean d?cor, the work of Collins & DuPont Interior Design, is introduced in the entry, where the eye takes in the soft citrus-hued walls and is directed ahead to the living room and its trio of vertical windows, each topped with fanlights, and displaying the views " lingering over the spa and custom pool before absorbing the rock-lined elevated tee box above the lake.

The model's honed and filled travertine flooring is introduced in the entry, and is used throughout most of the home. In the foyer, it is accented with a large medallion of tumbled marble and etched tile. The entry ceiling has crown molding, and wall niches on each side create shallow alcoves for furniture pieces.

The foyer is intersected by a gallery, a hallway that connects the master wing and dining room. Free-standing columns frame the entry into the living room, which has a precast stone fireplace flanked by shallow recesses with bookshelves. Multiple levels of crown molding and picture-frame molding carry the eye up to the coffered ceiling, where each of its nine coffers is accented with painted crown molding. Openings on each side of the opposite wall lead into the family room.

The family room's main wall is glass " four sliding glass doors that pocket out of sight and open to the covered lanai. Zero-corner doors in the adjacent nook also open to the lanai, expanding this area of the home's connection to its outdoor spaces. The family room's built-in entertainment center has paneled doors and three lighted square display areas above a flat-screen TV. The ceiling has painted tongue-and-groove beams.

The kitchen's breakfast bar defines the space between the family room and has a travertine surface, a double sink, a raised paneled dishwasher and a yellow river granite countertop, part of which is raised to provide ease in food preparation. Cabinetry near the dining room has a bead-board backsplash, stained-glass door inlays and task lighting.

A wrought-iron chandelier above the center island has a distressed gold finish with bark accents. The island's maple cabinetry has raised panel doors with custom pilasters and a chestnut fudge stain finish and glaze. It offers the room's second sink.

The kitchen ceiling has beams and crown molding. A pocketing door opens into a pantry. The room also has a paneled refrigerator-freezer, a Wolf microwave and stainless steel warming drawer and a stainless steel six-burner Wolf stove with a griddle and two ovens positioned under a window. Precast corbels and etched tile accent the hood.

The adjoining nook has a beamed ceiling and incorporates a built-in menu planning desk with a millennium dream granite countertop. Upper-level cabinetry has three lighted recesses above for art display.

A hallway off the nook leads to the Antica's two guest suites. One bedroom has a desk built into a wall recess and a private full bath with a travertine floor accented with polished Emperador marble and red onyx insets. Its furniture-style vanity has a marble countertop and its glass-enclosed shower has a decorative listello.

The second bedroom offers a walk-in closet with built-in cabinetry and a dresser, and windows overlooking the lake and tee box. Double sliding doors open to the covered lanai. Its full bath, which doubles as the pool bath, has a shower, a maple vanity with a tiled countertop and tumbled mosaic accents.

The Antica's covered lanai offers dining and seating areas, a tongue-and-groove cypress ceiling with textured stucco beams, chiseled-edge Tobago-style pavers and a free-standing fireplace with tile accents. It also has motorized screens, and its summer kitchen offers a stainless steel sink, Wolf grill, refrigerator and a Persa original granite countertop.

The raised spa doubles as a water feature and is located just steps from the living room windows. Water splashes from its spillover, falling to a runnel that connects to the pool, which has a wide sun shelf and two built-in benches. A wide stepping stone provides access across to the area of the patio near a free-standing pergola and the master suite's lanai. Steps lead down to a grassy lawn.

The gallery to the left of the foyer bypasses a wide opening into the family room en route to the dining room and a vestibule that serves the kitchen and leads to one of the three guest suites, the laundry room and a closet that houses the home's electronic systems.

The dining room floor is inlaid with a mosaic border. Its faux-finished walls have recesses and a window overlooks a nature preserve. The tray ceiling has a faux finish, crown molding and paneling.

The carpeted guest bedroom has windows overlooking the Antica's front gardens and a walk-in closet with built-in cabinetry. Its private full bath has a bomb?-style vanity with a marble countertop and carved details and a tile-clad shower with an elaborate inlay of mosaic and etched tile. The floor is accented with intersecting bands of mosaic tile.

The utility room has an L-shaped work area, a deep sink and tiled countertop. It offers a General Electric Duet washer and two dryers, a wall-mounted ironing board and light-hued cabinetry with a glazed finish. Three square windows provide natural light.

The powder bath, study and master suite are found in a private wing to the left of the foyer. The powder room's private vestibule has art niches. The bath has a furniture vanity with a Kashmir gold marble countertop, wallpaper and a travertine floor with decorative tile inserts. White wood paneling is used to chair rail height, and art niches are positioned on each side of the vanity.

Pocketing doors open into the study, which has an octagonal tongue-and-groove step-tray ceiling. Its cypress finish matches the built-in cabinetry below. The Old World maple floor has a wheat color; the faux grass cloth on the walls is butternut hued. The room's cabinetry is built into three recesses and has paneled doors below a woodwork surface and white-painted built-in shelves. The opposite wall has a wall-mounted flat-screen TV and recesses on each side with white wood shelves.

Double doors at the end of the gallery open into the master suite vestibule, where a window offers a palm-fringed view and hallways provide a choice of destinations " bedroom or bath. The bathroom has his-and-her maple vanities with recessed panel doors, applied molding and a distressed stain and glazed finish. Her vanity has a lower dressing table, and countertops are lemon ice granite with an ogee straight-edge detail. A special-effect wall treatment has a wrinkled effect for texture.

The travertine floor has accent dots, which reappear in the sides of the travertine-clad free-standing raised tub. A marble-clad arched opening at the foot of the tub looks into the shower, accessible by arched, doorless openings on each side of the tub. The shower has a noce tumbled marble floor, two built-in benches and marble walls accented with dot inserts between two listello borders. It also offers dual controls, including a hand-held sprayer, and windows that look out to a walled garden area.

The bathroom also has a separate water closet with a bidet; a linen closet and a tray ceiling with a faux finish and crown molding.

The hallway between the vestibule and bedroom has a morning kitchen with a lemon ice granite countertop and a refrigerator, and access to his walk-in closet. Her walk-in closet is located within the bedroom and has built-in cabinetry and a dresser with a marble top. The bedroom has a tray ceiling with two levels of crown molding, plantation shuttered windows and a recessed bed wall accented with a grid of white picture-frame molding. Sliding glass doors open to the private lanai near the pergola.

The Antica is priced at $4,995,000, fully furnished.

The Mediterra Information Center is located inside the community's entrance on Livingston Road two miles north of Immokalee Road in North Naples.

The 14 chapter awards are presented annually to the golf course superintendent of a property that represents the highest level of commitment to environmental stewardship. The winners are selected from GCSAA's 101 affiliated chapters. TwinEagles is a master-planned community being developed in Naples by Bonita Bay Group.

In the past few years, a handful of current and former pros have bought homes and property in the 1,697-acre community, created by Bonita Bay Group, a family-owned company that has built some of Southwest Florida's most exceptional lifestyle communities the past 25 years.

Mindy Sylvester, a real estate agent with Downing Frye who specializes in finding homes and investment properties for professional athletes, said Southwest Florida residents would be surprised by the former and current pro athletes who own property " and live " in Southwest Florida. The list, she said, includes players affiliated with the New York Jets, Chicago White Sox, Philadelphia Eagles, Indianapolis Colts and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Add the New Jersey Nets, Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks to the mix. Rod Thorn, a former pro hoops player and current president of the Nets, and hockey star Martin LaPointe each own a piece of paradise right here in Naples. The two are among at least four current and former pros who have closed on homesites and homes in Mediterra.

Sylvester said the Naples/Fort Myers area appeals to star athletes because of its emphasis on privacy. "They know they can come down here and eat dinner out and escape the stress and pressure of their jobs."

LaPointe and wife, Tania, who live in Chicago, discovered Naples through fellow Midwesterners.

"We always wanted a home down south, but we're really not the Miami type," he said. "We have four kids and the nightlife is not that important to us. We'd heard a lot of good things about Naples and the southwest part of Florida. There are a lot of people from the Midwest, and we like that."

LaPointe, a right winger who won back-to-back Stanley Cup championships with the Detroit Red Wings in 1997 and 1998 and most recently played for the Blackhawks and Ottawa Senators, recently purchased a single-family homesite for a vacation home. Although he hasn't started building, LaPointe said his Mediterra home will likely have a wine cellar " albeit smaller than his legendary collection in Chicago. "I like wine," he laughed.

Rod and Peggy Thorn's vacation home was completed in the summer of 2007. "My wife and family are there more than I am," admitted Rod, who's often on the road with the Nets or managing players back in New Jersey.

Thorn, who was the second overall draft pick of the Baltimore Bullets in 1963 and also played professionally with Detroit, St. Louis and Seattle, said he and Peggy had searched for a vacation home for 10 years. "We wanted somewhere warm that had activities we like," he said. "We started in Hilton Head and worked our way south."

The Thorns discovered Naples in 2006 and that led them to Mediterra. "We like to play golf and liked the way Mediterra was designed," Rod said. "It's a beautiful place, and it had a lot of activities, basically everything we like to do. I don't play tennis anymore but Peggy does, and Mediterra has a great tennis program."

Golf, ranked the No. 1 leisure activity for buyers in Southwest Florida, and The Beach Club also factored into the LaPointes' decision. LaPointe said he visited several Naples-area communities before playing golf with his agent on one of The Club at Mediterra's two Tom Fazio-designed courses. "I loved it," he said. "The Beach Club also sold us on Mediterra. It's unbelievable. It has towels, water toys for the kids, a restaurant and a pool if the kids don't want to get into the Gulf."

"There are also a lot of families with children in Mediterra," said LaPointe, whose daily schedule in Chicago includes shuttling his two oldest sons to hockey practice. "And a great fitness center. My wife and I are big into fitness, and we just weren't thrilled with the fitness facilities in some of the communities."

An expansion project at Mediterra's Sports Club, completed this past fall, nearly doubled the size of the building, increasing the fitness center and studio, adding a dedicated spa area with three treatment rooms and introducing new equipment.

Should he retire soon, LaPointe, an unrestricted free agent who's currently sitting out the 2008-09 season, said building his Mediterra home is likely his next project. That and dedicating more time to golf. "I've been able to play a lot more in the past three years, and it's one thing I look forward to doing more," he said. "I'm not a great golfer but I love being outside and playing nice courses."

Thorn, who was named Nets president in 2000 and is credited with reshaping the team, said he and Peggy will eventually retire to Mediterra but will maintain a second home in New York. His four-decade career in professional basketball encompasses coaching assignments and a 14-year tenure as the National Basketball Association's executive vice president of basketball operations. As general manager of the Chicago Bulls, he was also instrumental in drafting Michael Jordan in 1984.

Thorn tries to fit visits to Mediterra into his busy schedule " often during the Christmas-to-New Years holiday stretch and in the summer.

LaPointe is planning a February trip to Naples and hopes to "get in a round of golf."

He's also looking forward to meeting his future neighbors and the communities other pro athletes. "It will be interesting to have a cocktail with them and share our experiences."

Williams is one of only 1,725 managers nationwide to have earned the highest level of professional recognition in the community association field.

Williams joined the Bonita Bay Community Association in January 2000.

Verandah's Sales Soar in 2008

<img src="http://www.bonitabaygroup.com/siteimages/commupdateimages/ver-photo-web.jpg" align=right /> Home and homesite sales in Verandah in 2008 leapt far ahead of projections and exceeded the prior year's sales by 139 percent, according to Gary Dumas, vice president for Bonita Bay Group, which is developing the 1,456-acre master-planned community along a 1.75-mile stretch of the Orange River in Fort Myers.

Sales of homes and homesites hit 67 last year, compared to 28 in 2007.

"Everyone knows it's a tough real estate market," said Dumas, "but homebuyers continue to see the value of purchasing in a master-planned community like Verandah. With the prices being offered and incentive packages in place, our buyers literally jumped in " more than a third bought within 30 days of their first visit."

Dumas said buyer surveys indicate that the community's mature amenities were a compelling factor in homebuyers' decisions. "When you have two championship golf courses, including one by Jack Nicklaus and Jack Nicklaus II, along with nine miles of trails, a fitness center, riverfront restaurant, kayaks and a dog park, it's easy to see the depth of the value in purchasing a Verandah home," Dumas said. "Plus, our buyers know Bonita Bay Group has been around for more than 25 years. We're committed to the Southwest Florida market," he said.

Sales volume for 2008 topped $22.5 million and included homesites; estate, custom and traditional single-family homes; villas and coach homes offered by a number of the region's preferred homebuilders.

Bonita Bay Group created Verandah as an environmentally friendly and sustainable community and has earned environmental accolades for its emphasis on green building and preservation, its respect for the land and its comprehensive approach to sustainability.

The community has also been named by Where to Retire magazine as one of "America's 100 Best Master-Planned Communities" in 2007 and was named Community of the Year by the Lee Building Industry Association in 2005 and 2008.

Later this month, teams from either side of that border will face off on local turf in the 2009 Southwest Florida Golf Classic.

Bonita Bay Group has partnered with RBC Bank to sponsor the RBC Cup, an U.S.-versus-Canada golf tournament, scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 26, at The Club at TwinEagles. The event will include an auction and reception, with proceeds benefiting Big Cypress Wilderness Institute.

"It's an honor to be able to host this tournament, which brings us together with our Canadian friends for some high-spirited competition at TwinEagles," said David Lucas, chairman of Bonita Bay Group. "We are pleased to be able to partner with RBC Bank to make this event happen."

The tournament promises to be both fun and challenging as it will be played on TwinEagles' acclaimed Gary Player-designed Aerie course.

Amateur golf great O. Gordon Brewer Jr. will serve as captain of the U.S. team. Alain Forget, RBC Bank's vice president of strategy and business development for cross-border banking, will lead the Canadians. The victorious country will gain bragging rights and the inaugural RBC Cup.

"I'm delighted to participate in this event, which combines charitable giving with golf on an exceptional course," noted Forget. "With more than 2,700,000 Canadians visiting the Sunshine State each year, RBC is thrilled to sponsor this friendly, cross-border competition."

Brewer, a two-time United States Golf Association Senior Amateur champion and resident of Bonita Bay, is the 2009 recipient of the prestigious Bob Jones Award, the USGA's highest honor for sportsmanship in golf. Previous recipients include Jack Nicklaus, Gene Sarazen, Patty Berg and Gary Player.

"It's exciting to be heading up the team," Brewer said. "International matches are always special. They promote goodwill among countries, in this case, with our neighbors to the north. Of course, when you represent your country, you always want to play your best. I think everyone who is privileged to participate will know they are involved in something special. It's the kind of event through which good friendships are made."

TwinEagles, a 1,115-acre community developed by Bonita Bay Group, affords residents not only a carefree, active lifestyle, but also a premium golf experience. The Club at TwinEagles is certified by Audubon International as a Signature Sanctuary and is the only private club in Florida with courses designed by two living legends. Jack Nicklaus designed The Talon, a perfect complement to the Player-designed Aerie. TwinEagles has made Travel + Leisure Golf's list of the top 100 U.S. golf communities for three consecutive years and received a top award from the Council for Sustainable Florida. Golf + Travel Magazine has named it one of the 12 Most Intriguing Golf Communities in America.

The tournament will have a 12:30 p.m. shotgun start with Vegas-scramble foursomes for men, women and mixed teams. Entry is $125 per person, which includes golf, cart, driving range and dinner. Those who wish to attend the dinner pay only $40. For registration forms and information, contact Nathan Groce, TwinEagles, 239-354-1724 or Carole Lavigne, RBC Bank, 561-443-5451.

"Having a U.S.-verses-Canada golf competition in Southwest Florida makes perfect sense considering a growing number of Canadians are choosing to retire here or invest in second homes," added Lucas. "Southwest Florida International Airport is more accessible than ever, with direct flights from Toronto and other Canadian cities. With home prices at their lowest in a decade, savvy investors realize it's an ideal time to buy their places in the sun."

The National Association of Realtors recently reported that Canadians accounted for nearly a quarter of all U.S. foreign homebuyers between May 2007 and May 2008, twice the number of the previous year. Florida is the top choice for Canadian buyers, who now own $5 billion of property in the Sunshine State.

Forget believes the tournament reflects the special relationship that exists between Canada and the United States.

"Our two countries are able to compete yet remain staunch allies," Forget said. "As more and more Canadians choose to live at least part of the year in Southwest Florida, I believe a similar relationship will naturally develop among neighbors and events such as this will serve to strengthen that bond."

Recognized as Canada's financial services leader in cash management, international trade finance and foreign exchange, RBC Royal Bank's U.S. fully-owned subsidiary, RBC Bank, offers 86 branches in Florida including five in Southwest Florida. The Raleigh, N.C.-based RBC Bank features a program that assists Canadians successfully navigate the American home-buying maze. For more information, visit www.RBCBankUSA.com.

The list, published in the January/February issue, is introduced, "These one hundred exquisite environments are case studies in how to make life on earth as pleasing, stimulating and worthwhile as possible."

In compiling the annual list "of the best places to live " and live well," Travel + Leisure Golf evaluated private golf course communities in six categories: golf; residential architecture and style; location, including natural setting and proximity to cultural activities; management, service and programming options; nongolf amenities; and environmental stewardship. The three Bonita Bay Group communities are among 19 Florida picks.

The magazine's profile of Bonita Bay read, "The good life in Florida can raise fears of insufficient stimulation for some. Here, the residential towers look down on the golf courses, playing 140,000 annual rounds, and the activities calendar includes philosophy seminars." Bonita Bay has three Arthur Hills-designed courses in the community and two Tom Fazio courses, which offer a pure golf experience, nearby.

Mediterra was lauded for its community amenities: "Not content to rest on its laurels, Mediterra remodeled its Sports Club, doubling the square footage with added fitness space plus a new salon and spa treatment rooms. It offers a medieval-themed stargazing pavilion and golf courses that earn the highest Audubon Sanctuary status." Tom Fazio designed Mediterra's 36 holes.

TwinEagles is recognized for golf: "The clubhouse at TwinEagles is vast by necessity, but the atmosphere is still warm and "golfy." A departed Champions Tour event proved the golf here to be tournament-ready " while the actual hassle of hosting it is no longer a factor." The Club at TwinEagles boasts the only private club in Florida with 18 holes of golf by Jack Nicklaus and Jack Nicklaus II, and 18 holes designed by Gary Player.

Residential options are varied in the Bonita Bay Group communities, and a sales and information center is located at the entrance to each community. At Bonita Bay, luxury high-rise residences overlook the Gulf of Mexico. High-rise homes, represented exclusively by Premier Properties of Southwest Florida Inc. REALTORS, are available from $660,000 to nearly $2.9 million in Esperia South, which opened in October 2007, and Tavira, which opens this fall.
