My Favorite Site for Remodeling/Decorating Inspiration

Every now and then, I like to daydream about making over a house. I’ll walk into a thrift store, look at its contents and imagine what I’d do if I was living alone and could decorate a place in any manner I wanted to. However, I’m not really creative. I search for others ideas and change them around to make them “mine”.

Recently, I was intrigued when I learned about a website which can inspire those who look to an interior designer to get their creative juices flowing. Throughout the day, when I have a few minutes, I find myself heading over to the site and gleaning from it. I can search according to the style of decorating I prefer or which space I want to makeover. There are all kinds of articles to read (my favorites are about organizing and about decorating via repurposing). Within the next few days, I plan to create my “ideabook”. That will consist of me signing up for a free account, searching thru the site’s more than 250,000 photos and saving those that appeal to me. Consider it making a photo album without the scissors and glue!

My ImPRESS Press-On Manicure Experience

As a reviewer of products sent to me by Influenster, I am given the opportunity to try some really cool items I normally wouldn’t buy for myself. Plus, I can share my thoughts about them with you to help you decide if the product is one that may benefit you.

I’ve already shared, in a previous post, about the Holiday VoxBox Influenster sent me before Christmas. One of its contents, that I absolutely adored, was ImPRESS Press-On Manicure.

I was sent the nail pattern WinkWink, but the nails are also available in solid colors as well as other patterns. WinkWink is a pretty pattern and can go with casual or formal attire.

The product information states the nails can stay on for up to a week. I was a bit rough with mine and I think that may have had something to do with them staying on for two days. I wasn’t bothered by that fact, though. I still enjoyed them!

Probably my favorite features about them are 1) there’s no drying time during application and 2) they look and feel just like the expensive gel nails applied at nails salons.

Saving at CVS This Week!

This week, I had another excellent shopping/savings experience at CVS! I love when that happens as I then walk around with a little “bounce in my step” for a few hours. However, my kids get tired of hearing me telling them, and others, of how much I saved. That’s why I’m going to share my savings here. Shhhhhhhh, don’t tell them. LOL

CVS has many sales on items I needed this week. That’s the key--make sure you are buying items you need or that you will give to others in need. You don’t want to take advantage of a sale just for the heck of it.

On top of the sales, I had some good coupons! That’s another tip: Try to match up sales with coupons. Sales are great, but sales and coupons are better!

Lastly, I’d earned $22.50 in ExtraBucks by using my ExtraCare Card and purchasing certain items during the fall quarter. You can read more about CVS ExtraBucks at: Couponing: Part One, Six Boxes of Puffs Tissues for 47 Cents and ExtraCare.

What I purchased My receipt

My bill initially was $66.87 for everything and that included sale items. My pricey item was Zyrtec at $18.99. After handing over my coupons and the $22.50 in ExtraBucks my subtotal was $23.22. $.70 tax was added for a total OOP of $23.92. In the end, I saved $43.65!

An added plus…Since I bought $30.00 worth of specially marked items and my ExtraCare Card was scanned, I received a $10.00 CVS gift card to use on my next purchase. Yay!

Thank you, God, for giving me the ability to wisely use the money You’ve provided for my family.

NYC New York Color Liquid Lipshine Review

Shortly before Christmas, I shared with you about receiving the Holiday VoxBox from Influenster. I promised I would start sharing about it’s contents once things slowed down after Christmas and New Year’s.

Well, it’s time for me to start sharing! The first item I’d like to tell you about is: NYC New York Color Liquid Lipshine. The color I received, as a sample, is Nude York City and I thought it was great before I even applied it.

The color is neutral, which is something I like because that means it’s versatile. I applied it first over my bare lips and then over my lipstick--(see pics, below). It’s shimmer effect is an added benefit that makes this lip gloss fun and festive.

To be honest with you, I didn’t notice Nude York City staying on any longer than other lip glosses I’ve used. However, I was really impressed with the scent of it. It didn’t smell “fake” like others do. The scent reminded me of candy. I found that to be a great plus!

Out of the Mouths of Babes

I came across a blog and this particular blog post tickled my funny bone! (Upon further investigation, I learned that I know the blogger’s wife. She is one of my couponing mentors. Small world, huh?)

I have a soft spot, in my heart, for homeschooling parents, especially those embarking on this adventure. I still homeschool my two younger children and the oldest graduated nearly two years ago. All three are now teens.

Thanks, Don't Make Me Count To 3! You made my day (except for the part of spewing the coffee on my keyboard, but don’t worry about that. Maybe your wife can provide me with a coupon for a new one-LOL!).

2012 Bitch

That’s right! In case you didn’t know.

Last Thursday we had our park day with one of the homeschool groups we belong too. This is a good group because it is small, and for the most part all girls my girls’ age.

One of the moms there, Andrea, bought a neat lesson course. It’s philosophy for young elementary aged kids. She wanted to give it a try in a small group and since we met once a week for the park day anyway, it was worth a shot.

We met up at the top of the hill, very scenic, in a large wooden gazebo. The weather was perfect. The ladies and I sat quietly after gathering the children onto a red blanket. Of course the kids are used to running around and generally going nuts on park day, so a took a while to settle them down.

When they finally stopped jumping around like electrons Andrea started the lesson.

Andrea: “Ok. Did your mom or dad tell you what we are doing today?”

Zoey: “No.”

Me: “Yes I did!”

Andrea: “Well, we’re going to read a short story and then talk about it. Is that ok?”

Zoey: “2012 bitch!”

And she said it like she had just dunked over Shaquille O’Neal. Of course all eyes are on me.

My first instinct was to pretend she wasn’t my kid. My second was to shrug and say, “Well… it is.” Instead I said, “I have no idea…”

But one of the other moms came to my rescue. She pointed out it was written in heavy black marker all over the wooden top beams of the gazebo. I hadn’t seen it because I was wearing sunglasses.

All I can say is she knows how to sound out new words. My girls can read.

CVS is having a sale on some of the Puffs Tissues this week. I went right for the ones that are $.99 and started my shopping adventure!

I also had two manufacturer coupons for Puffs Tissue. Each saved me $.25 for the purchase of three boxes. That’s why I ended up buying six boxes.

With Christmas just around the corner, many engagements will take place. That, in turn, will lead to many weddings!

Any bride-to-be will tell you an import aspect of a wedding is choosing the color scheme. Over the years, I’ve attended many weddings and the color schemes have varied. Most were pastel colors with gray or black. However, I have also been to one wedding where the color scheme was black and white. Once the color scheme is determined, other important wedding preparations can take place.

This leads to the main subject I’m writing about which is wedding invitations. They give your guests the first hint as to what type of wedding yours will be: traditional, contemporary, vintage, etc. There are so many types to choose from. Those with a splash of a third color are my favorite, though. I think it’s because the third color is so vivid when next to black and white. Whatever design you choose, make sure both the bride and groom are in agreement. Also, do your homework and order from a reputable company.

How Important Are Credit Scores?

I’m in the process of enlightening my oldest child about the dangers of identity theft. Just this morning, she received an email regarding an “issue” with her checking account. I advised her to contact the bank via their website and not respond to the email. My concern was that the email was sent by a hacker in an attempt to gain access to her account and, thus, ruin her credit score. This incident was a great lead-in to a discussion about her credit report and its importance.

Being vigilant about checking our credit reports, on a regular basis, is something we should all strive for. Often, doing so is the only way people become aware they have become victims of identity theft. Identify theft not only affects one’s credit score, but it also puts undo stress on their family. It makes it difficult to keep a budget during these turbulent economic times, and makes applying for a loan, which can be a nail-biting experience to begin with, even more arduous.

Finding an online company that provides free credit score information, on a constant basis, is not possible at this time. However, there are companies that provide free credit score information as part of a trial membership. Enlisting their services can be done from the comfort of our homes, which is a big plus in my book. The greatest benefit, though, is peace-of-mind that we are being proactive about preventing someone from taking on our identity and ruining our credit score which can negatively affect so many aspects of our lives.

Happy Thanksgiving, 2011!!! :-D

In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. (I Thessalonians 5:18)

Give thanks for everything? Really? The good and the bad?

It’s easy to thank Him for the job you have, the house you live in and for healing the loved one who was very ill.

What about being thankful for the not-so-pleasant things? How are believers supposed to do that? We are to thank Him for the unfortunate situations, as well as the good ones, and have faith they happened for a reason that will bring glory to Him.

How can a person be thankful when they’ve lost their job? Faith is the answer. Maybe their family life suffered because of the job and losing the job unified the family. Another possibility: Maybe the job wasn’t what they really wanted to do for a living. Losing it allowed the person to pursue a God-given passion they had and they are much happier, now. His will is done.

Let’s say a person wants to buy a house they are crazy about. However, plans don’t go their way and they don’t get the house. What does that person have to be thankful for? Faith is the answer. Perhaps there were unseen problems with the house and God was protecting the person from having to deal with them. God may have seen that the house was going to become a kind of “God” to the person and He decided it best that the purchase not work out. His will is done.

Many times we pray for someone who is ill, but they continue to suffer and are taken from us. This is a difficult issue, in some ways, to understand. We are to be thankful? Yes! Again, Faith is the answer. Years ago, I realized our prayers for healing are answered. Our prayers are answered in the way He sees as best. We want our loved one healed so they can remain with us on Earth. However, He may see it best to heal our loved one in Heaven. Either way, they are healed and for that, we should be thankful. Being thankful doesn’t mean we don’t hurt when the loved one is taken from us. It means we appreciate God doing what is best. Being thankful doesn’t mean we always get what we want. He can see the big picture and we can’t. Again, His will is done.

Faith is the answer. We are to have faith that all things happen because God knows best. He is going to use those times of trial to show us His awesomeness; to bring us closer to Him. Sometimes, we don’t see the blessings that come from our trials for a long time. Sometimes, we aren’t the ones who see the blessings at all…others do. Either way…Faith is the answer. Be thankful and have faith.

Saying Goodbye

Note: I first published this post last year. Since then, I’ve made some changes to my blog. In doing so, when I hit the “Publish” button, it came through as a new post. My daddy is still with us, though his condition continues to deteriorate. I last saw him two weeks ago and each moment with him was a blessing.

There comes a time in everyone’s life when they must deal with the death of a loved one. Whether it’s a sudden death or one that’s expected, it still hurts. Personally, I’m facing the imminent death of my daddy due to Alzheimer’s among other health issues. I’m a Daddy’s Girl (and people who really know the two of us will tell you that) even though we’ve had many disagreements over the years, he’s still my daddy. Sadly, he didn’t recognize me when I visited him last week (unfortunately, we live 1400 miles from him) in Ohio, and it crushed me in a way that I’ve not been able to acknowledge until now.

While on our trip, I started reflecting on my past and what I know of my daddy’s. His was bittersweet. I know his childhood was painful, both physically and mentally. I also know he was fun-loving and found mischief in the hills of West Virginia, where he is from. I hurt for him because of the pain he endured and because I know it still bothers him even though he can’t tell me now. As for the fun, I know where my mischievous side comes from—HIM—and it makes me smile each time I think of it. It’s one trait of his that I can carry on and I do so when an opportunity arises.

What will I remember when my daddy comes to mind? Wow! Numerous things:

1.The crazy songs he would sing on a whim

2.What a big flirt he was

3. How he was known by many as the “Mayor of Manchester” and how he proudly proclaimed it

4. His quick temper that I loved him in spite of

5. How, when I did something really stupid, he didn’t give me the Ward Cleaver talk. Nope, it was more along the lines of “What were you thinking"?”

6. Standing on his feet and “dancing” with him when I was little

7. Him teaching me to drive—Bless his heart, it wasn’t always easy

Most importantly, what will make my heart skip a beat whenever I think of him? Those are entirely different memories: The day he walked me down the aisle at my wedding. As we walked, he asked me if I was nervous. I responded with a calm, cool and collected, “No.” His response? “Good, you shouldn’t be” said very matter-of-factly. There was no mushy response from him that day. Truthfully, I think HE was nervous as I was a young bride. The other memories that will make my heart skip a beat are when he saw each of my children for the first time. All children were special to him, but his grandchildren were his pride and joy. I remember him holding my oldest daughter, when she wasn’t even an hour old, while at my hospital bedside. He sang to her and they looked at each other as though they had a special secret that was between only the two of them. One day short of exactly four years later, he met my newborn son. We asked our parents to wait until we brought the baby home to come meet him because I was only in the hospital for a day. My daddy wasn’t happy about waiting, but he did, and he had the same connection with that grandchild as the first. As for my youngest daughter, well, he didn’t meet her until she was 10 months old and it was in an airport. He latched onto her, as he did the previous two, and they were fast friends.

Seeing him also made me question some choices I made and if they were the right ones. Did I make the choices for me or for others, mainly him. I think I did it for both. My goal was to not disappoint him when I was younger and I obeyed him, as we are instructed to do by God. One of those decisions, though, broke my heart and I feel the pain to this day. It also hurt someone else I hold dearly to my heart. I hope none of my children ever have to experience that pain in their lives. As I grew older and realized I could make decisions on my own, I became more comfortable in that knowledge and put it into practice—sometimes much to his chagrin. Of course, there were times my decisions didn’t work out well and I would hear, “I told you so”. He wasn’t trying to be hurtful. It was just his way of reminding me that he did know a thing or two.

Why did I write this entry? I guess because it was therapeutic for me. I needed a way to organize my thoughts and what’s on my heart. The name of this blog is Bonnie’s Heart and Home, so I feel it’s an appropriate forum in which to share about the first man I ever loved. Plus, I want others to know about the daddy I miss already. He wasn’t perfect and he’d be the first to admit it, but he was/is mine. I love you, Daddy.
