But 2.6 billion people still don’t have a safe, affordable way to poop. Explore the infographic by the Gates Foundation below and learn how we can reinvent the toilet.

Tomorrow's Toilet:

We can achieve universal access to sanitation by making toilets that people like and can afford to use for less that give cents per user per day.

Transport: 200 million latrines worldwide are emptied by hand - a dirty, dangerous job. New solutions can cut emptying cost to $10 per home per year and support thousands of well-paid jobs.

Uptake: For every $1 that developing countries invest in creating affordable sanitation, they can generate $9 in economic benefits, including reduced health cost - a 900% return on investment.

Treatment: By creating affordable "off-the-grid: toilets that recover valuable resources from our crap, we can achieve 100% if waste processing at $0 in cost.

Find out why we need a toilet revolution. The current crisis in the Horn of Africa is a man-made disaster that could have been avoided. But over the past few years, we lost the political will and public support necessary to stop the starving – and its causes. As a consequence, tens of thousands of children have died.
We've also missed the opportunity to help 200 million people from poor farming families lift themselves out of poverty. Communities in Africa can cope with droughts and natural disasters. But we need donors to put resources toward seeds, irrigation and teaching farmers new growing techniques. We need leaders to invest in early warning systems and national social safety net programs.

Congress can help keep America's commitment to farmers in developing countries by fully funding Feed the Future— a life-changing USAID initiative that is investing in long-term agricultural development and could help put an end to famine for good.

Please sign our petition to Congress calling on them to fund this vital program:

U.S. Petition: http://www.one.org/us/actnow/
International Petition: http://act.one.org/sign/hungry_no_more/

Famine in Somalia [Infographic]

Famine in the Horn of Africa Facts and Numbers

Created by eLocal.com in partnership with The Washington Post

CARE: Helping to Educate Children in Dadaab

Liz McLaughlin, Executive Director of CARE's Foundation Unit, recently travelled to the Dadaab camp in Northern Kenya where CARE is helping to educate refugee children.

World Humanitarian Day is a celebration of people helping people.

Every day humanitarian aid workers help millions of people around the world. The day recognizes the sacrifices and contributions of those who risk their lives to give others help and hope. It is also about inspiring the spirit of aid work in everyone.

Today, the most pressing humanitarian crisis in the world is unfolding in the Horn of Africa. Famine has spread in Somalia, including Mogadishu, and threatens to expand throughout the south. Many people are dying. 12.4 million people in Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia and Djibouti urgently need our help and the numbers are increasing. Humanitarian partners continue to work hard on the ground to save lives.

Edun, the global fashion brand co-founded by Bono and his wife Ali Hewson, is partnering with Concern during the months of August, September and October to donate proceeds from the company’s profits to alleviate suffering in the Horn of Africa.

In August, 10 percent of the proceeds of Edun’s entire fall collection will be donated to Concern, with a further expansion planned during the months of September and October, when 100 percent of all proceeds from the sale of a specially designed EDUN/Concern t-shirt and the Poem Scarf will go towards funding Concern’s programs in the region.
