Speaking on radio in South Africa, Bono said that the secret to their long union was that Ali is a "very patient missus", the Irish Daily Star reports.

Bono said: "Ali is an incredible person. I'm a 'wherever I lay my hat that's my home' kind of person, but she introduced me to the concept of home.

"I didn't really feel that strongly as a kid, so I owe her that sense of belonging. I hold on to her very tightly, but you have your ups in downs . This is not Mills and Boon territory."

The couple, who met in school, got married in 1982 and have four children together - Jordan, Memphis Eve, Elijah and John.

Bono also spoke about "having nervous dreams" about his children.

"I had mad dreams last night, they were nervous dreams and they were all about my kids. Those kids are amazing. Eve has a movie coming out with Sean Penn, Jordan's a bit of an activist and an amazing piano player.

"And then there's the two boys - they're just comedians. I love being around them. I have a sense that this next generation is going to be much stronger than us."

Rock star says he’s a ‘traveling salesman’ for the continent

ACCRA, Ghana — A 46-year-old rock star from Ireland stops at a small kiosk where a woman runs her own business, selling shares of call time on cell phones.

"This is what we Irishmen call the American dream," says Bono.

Bono likes to stop and point to what works on this continent, largely because he has plunged himself into so much sadness.

At another stop, he visits the Ghana Stock Exchange, not quite the New York Stock Exchange's Big Board, but it’s a big and burgeoning development here, and they are justifiably proud of it.

"The regional vertical integration is very exciting for us," says Bono.

He is never greeted as just a musician. In fact, he is welcomed as something akin to a head of state. He sits with the presidents of the nations he visits, because they know it is his interest that is driving a massive global effort and pledges of billions of dollars. He wants this story to be about more than him.

"I genuinely see myself as a traveling salesman," says Bono. "And like all salesman, I'm a bit of an opportunist. And I see Africa as a great opportunity.

Bono gave NBC News extraordinary access to his traveling operation, perhaps the largest Africa aid effort ever by any individual. On the flight from Mali to Ghana, he talked about his love of the place and the people.

"My goal, my job, is to put myself out of a job. So I can be in a rock band in all good conscience. And get on with my spoiled rotten rock star's life and drink a martini."

This effort, he says, is to use and leverage his own name, whether it's getting the G8 nations to give more, lobbying President Bush, partnering with evangelical Christians or getting Americans to care about the 9,000-plus people who die every day in Africa.

"The thing that's going to bring this home is Americans deciding that's what America is about," says Bono. "That's why I'm a fan of America. America is not just a country, it's an idea, and real Americans are getting busy."

How did he find President Bush as a man to do business with?

"He's been very honest in his business dealings with me," says Bono. "As has Secretary of State (Condoleezza) Rice, and we did an awful lot of work."

He says none of his barnstorming for the poor and sick has taken time away from his music. He says he's going back to Dublin and his U2 bandmates with up to eight new songs, one of which, he admitted on the plane, he wrote just last night. He shared the lyrics with us during the flight.

"There's an old midnight. Please, you're just on your knees. There was no price to pay. Thank you for the day."

Amid the punditry over whether the financial reform bill will be effective, the measure received a ringing endorsement last week from the only expert that may matter (to some people, at least): Bono.

The lead singer of U2, and founder of the antipoverty group ONE, lauded the bill for including an amendment by Sen. Ben Cardin, D-Md., and Sen. Richard Lugar, R-Ind., that would require companies listed on the New York Stock Exchange to disclose what they pay foreign governments for extracting oil, gas and other resources.

The amendment "is a great lever to support more transparency and healthier governance in poor countries," Bono said in a press release issued Thursday by ONE.

ONE had been lobbying for the amendment since May, when according to the organization, it had generated more than 1,000 calls from members and supporters for the legislation.

U2 frontman Bono says he is recovering well after recent back surgery and is confident in sticking to the band’s next scheduled concert in three weeks time.

Two months after undergoing the emergency surgery, he said he is able to sit, stand and "move around a bit”. Speaking in a video published on the band’s website – the first public appearance since the surgery – Bono said he is "feeling strong, feeling confident… I'm going to be fighting fit."

In May, U2 cancelled their 16-date North American tour due to what German doctors called Bono's "sudden partial paralysis".

"Rebuilt by German engineering – better design, I'm told," said Bono. The 50-year-old is seen standing and taking a few steps, but it's not clear whether he is yet at full mobility.

And it seems the time spent “staring at the ceiling” during his recovery has not been wasted, with Bono having written some “great” new songs which the band have already started recoding.

The band resume their 360º tour in Turin, Italy on 6 August, and have rescheduled their US and Canadian dates for the summer of 2011.

According to manager Paul McGuinness, the 360º tour costs US$500,000 per day, whether or not U2 are playing. Although they are insured, the cancelled dates have reportedly pushed the group into debt.

Perhaps some of Bono’s new songs will help to recover their losses.

Bono is actually a name, and not an activity. Paul David Hewson, the lead singer and lyricist of the accomplished Irish rock group, U2, turned his talents, and his genius for publicity, to the international populist causes of the day. Soon he was organising benefit concerts for the woebegone inhabitants of this troubled world, consorting with presidents and kings and accumulating an assortment of titles and awards. Formally granted an honorary knighthood in March 2007 and thrice nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, the former Time Person of the Year has been described by Paul Thoreau as a “mythomaniac” — a person who wishes “…to convince the world of (his) worth”. It baffles me that scholars will spend their time and knowledge to brand someone who uses his fame in prol of others. It seems that they all try to put Bono in his place: a mere rock star who should be limited to collecting fancy cars and properties (from) around the globe.

Perhaps all this criticism is admiration gone wrong. I firmly believe that these accomplished professionals wished they were as famous as Bono.

I understand skeptics sustain the idea that the Irish singer is used by large corporations to bring them more money. They, however, fail to see that U2's frontman is not a gullible human being.

We live in a capitalist world ruled by a few powerful people. Why not turn consumerism into something good by relocating money and prosperity to the less well-off? Why not make use of VIP connections to bring attention to ideas that will make these things possible?

Mr. Hewson has said celebrity is currency. He's got the strongest currency in this department for many years and this won't change because it is backed with honesty. Perhaps the problem lies in the fact that he's a honest man with millions to spare.

Bono can swear: U2 singer off the hook by federal appeals court from FCC for words said 7 years ago.

As Bono recovers from surgery and is getting ready for the road with U2, his words that got him in trouble with the FCC seven years ago have finally been set free. Today in a ruling that will allow entertainers on camera to use occasional expletives as long as promising it was the spur of the moment passion. Or until the FCC figures out a batter way to regulate.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the talented singer can rest with ease as he really has a moment to use the right words and not get snapped with a big fine.

U2 singer Bono was apparently responsible for the FCC’s tougher guidelines. “In 2004, however, the FCC’s policy on indecency changed. During the 2003 Golden Globe Awards, U2 band member Bono exclaimed, upon receiving an award, ‘this is really, really, fu***** brilliant. Really, really, great.’ In response to complaints filed after the incident, the FCC declared, for the first time, that a single, nonliteral use of an expletive (a so-called “fleeting expletive”) could be actionably indecent.”

According to NBC Universal Chief Executive Jeff Zucker this decision was somewhat expected.

"This was a big decision that came down from the second circuit here in new york, which tossed out some fcc regulations that most of the broadcast networks actually just couldn't -- couldn't -- didn't think were realistic." said Zucker.

The federal appeals court decision today says the FCC rules are too vague to be constitutional.

U2 singer Bono and his wife Ali took to the high seas yesterday for lunch with Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich.

The meeting with the Chelsea owner took place on 'The Rising Son' yacht moored in the Mediterranean off the French coast which is owned by billionaire Larry Ellison, CEO of the software company Oracle.

Bono (50), who has a holiday home in the south of France, is recovering from surgery he underwent last May for a compressed sciatic nerve in his back.

It was during preparations for the next leg of U2's 360 tour that the frontman injured himself, an incident which resulted in U2 having to cancel their headline performance at the Glastonbury Festival.

Bono donates hat to charity auction in Brazil

Bono has donated one of his hats to be auctioned by a Sao Paulo based charity who teach Paraisopolis slum children how to read.

Celebrities hair dresser Wanderley Nunes runs the project and met Bono during his visit to Brasilia in 2006.

According to Kiss FM Bono wrote Love and Pizza on the hat. When corruption is investigated and no one is found responsible, which is very often the case in Brazil, it is said "It ended in pizza".

Tough it cannot be said that Bono had this in mind when he signed the hat as he paid Brasilia a visit after an invitation by President Lula, who was accused of being aware if not directly involved in the bribery scheme called mensalão the year before his visit.

The auction will take place in August and it is believed the minimum bid will be €8,000.

O músico escreveu uma frase dedicatória no boné verde, as palavras “Amor e Pizza”. O souvenir será leiloado em prol de um projeto de alfabetização na favela de Paraisópolis, em evento organizado pelo cabeleleiro Wanderley Nunes.

Wanderley, é famoso por cuidar dos cabelos do presidente Lula e de celebridades, como Rodrigo Santoro e Cláudia Raia. Ele conheceu Bono na turnê do U2 pelo Brasil em 2006, e acompanhou o cantor na visita à Lula, em Brasília.

O leilão ocorrerá no mês de agosto e o lance mínimo pelo boné de Bono Vox deve ser de 10 mil reais.

Bono has fully recovered from a back injury sustained in May while rehearsing for the planned 360 Tour in Europe. Sources today confirm that the Dublin-based singer will be back on stage with U2 to resume touring, starting in Turin, Italy on the 1st week of August.

The extensive surgery the U2 front-man had to undergo coupled with a long recovery time meant cancelling 17 concert dates in the US and putting the European leg on indefinite hold.

The band also had to cancel their headline slot at Glastonbury music festival in June.

Bono’s orders from the doctors were to rest for two months.

U2’s manage Paul McGuinness figured the fixed overheads meant that the band and tour promoter Live Nation was eating as much as £500,000 a day.

BONO will be back on stage in a matter of weeks despite his recent emergency surgery, according to U2's manager Paul McGuinness.

The Irish rocker (50) was operated on after becoming temporarily paralysed -- forcing the band to cancel the start of the US leg of their 360° Tour and their headline slot at Glastonbury.

An optimistic McGuinness told the Diary: "He's making a full recovery. The doctors told me he's going to be fine. It was serious surgery but we expect him to make a full recovery. He's pretty fit."

McGuinness said there was no reason to believe the tour's massive stage production had anything to do with the singer's injury.

"It's a big stage to run around, but no," he said. "I'll be very relieved when I see him running around the stage again. The European leg of the tour starts in Turin on August 6 and that has not been postponed.

"Rescheduling the American leg is quite difficult because it is an outdoor show; we can't do it in the winter because it's the northern hemisphere.

"So what we're doing now is trying to seek availability of the buildings that we had already pretty much sold-out, so we're getting availabilities and routing a coherent tour for next summer in the US and Canada. We've nearly done it so I hope we'll be able to announce that shortly."

McGuinness insisted the rest of the band hasn't been enjoying an impromptu holiday while Bono recovers.

"No not really, they're doing some work and planning to do some recording. It never stops really," he said.

In an effort to make exam papers student friendly, U2 have a habit of turning up on them and it was the turn of higher-level art yesterday, with a question on Louis le Brocquy's image of Bono, said the Independent.

The Irish newspaper did not say what the question on the Leaving Certificate exam papers was but here is what Louis le Brocquy said about his own work:

'In the past I have painted an extensive series of interiorised head images of artists such as Samuel Beckett and Francis Bacon, WB Yeats and Seamus Heaney whom I see as extraordinary instances of human consciousness. In more recent years, I have made a number of similar studies of Bono, whose spirit and whose radiant enery I admire so much. But a painting destined for the National Portrait Gallery presents a different challenge; to make a recognizable image of Bono's outward appearance, while attempting to portray what I conceive to be the wavelengths of his inner dynamism.'

Louis le Brocquy (born 10 November 1916) is an Irish painter born in Dublin. Le Brocquy is widely acclaimed for his evocative "Portrait ‘Heads" of literary figures and fellow artists, which include William Butler Yeats, James Joyce, and his friends Samuel Beckett, Francis Bacon and Seamus Heaney, in recent years le Brocquy's early "Tinker" subjects and Grey period "Family" paintings, have attracted headline attention on the international marketplace marking him as the fourth painter in Ireland and Britain to be evaluated within a very select group of artists, alongside Lucian Freud, David Hockney and Francis Bacon.
