BlueStacks App Player runs Android applications such as Talking Tom 2, Whatsapp, Facebook, Skype, Angry Birds & All Android Apps within Windows.

Once you've downloaded the app onto a PC, an icon of the Android robot standing on the Windows logo will appear on the top right-hand corner of the Windows desktop screen. BlueStacks also offers Cloud Connect, for transferring apps from an Android phone to a PC or tablet. BlueStacks will launch a final version of BlueStacks App Player Pro soon, for a yet-to-be announced price. The company promises that a free version will remain available, however. Sony Smart Watch Complete Review

Sony’s range of LiveWare accessories certainly offer a unique take on connected headsets and wearable interfaces for your Android phone, but they've previously been hit-and-miss-affairs, generally seen as great ideas that don’t quite fulfil their promise. The SmartWatch is the latest in this line, a follow-up to the LiveView that was released around a year and a half ago. The older model offered similar features, but was critically panned for being unresponsive, unreliable, and utterly useless if it lost connection with the phone. Sony has made plenty of changes in this iteration, but the price went up too — the SmartWatch comes in at $149.99, almost double the $79.99 of its predecessor. Are phone-connected watches finally growing up, and is the SmartWatch worth the extra cash? Read on to find out.

The Sony SmartWatch is an intriguing device — a secondary display for your Android-powered handset that provides quick access to notifications from select apps and services on your phone. It’s also able to show you who's calling or texting, control music, and even tell the time. There's been a growing trend for products like this over the past few months, from the WIMM One to Fossil’s MetaWatch, but Sony’s is one of the first of this latest wave (along with the inPulse) to make it to the general public.

Hardware

The SmartWatch’s main feature is a 1.3-inch OLED display fitted into a case reminiscent of the sixth-generation iPod nano, measuring 1.5 inches across its square face, and a half-inch high when locked into the integrated clip. A power button is placed where you’d find the crown winder of an analog watch, and a Sony logo is printed on the bezel beneath the glass face. There’s an obvious distinction between the bezel and the display, which is slightly disappointing — it breaks up the otherwise glossy black face when the backlight is switched off.

An aluminum frame wraps around the edge of the display, broken only by the aforementioned power button, and the sprung clip and bottom casing are made of white plastic. Underneath the clip are four golden metal contacts, used to charge the device with a proprietary USB cable. This is a neat design in that there aren’t any flaps or exposed ports on the device, though if you lose or break the cable it could be difficult to find a replacement.

The display itself is bright, clear, and astonishingly sharp, though its low 128 x 128 resolution makes images and text grainy and jagged. The color depth is decent, especially for something so small — Sony’s specs say that it’s capable of showing 65,000 colors — but it's difficult to look for detail in the color amidst the pixel noise.

Design

The SmartWatch interface is now fully touch-based, rather than relying on the bezel controls that made for an imprecise and frustrating experience in the LiveView. The capacitive panel supports two-finger multitouch and is largely responsive, although there’s some occasional lag or missed gestures. The glass feels built to last, but it's a real fingerprint magnet, and you’ll frequently find yourself wiping away oily marks from its face. It turns on via the the power button, or a vibration sensor — shake or tap the watch and it’ll display the time.

A black rubber watchband adapter ships with the SmartWatch, with the Sony logo etched into the metal fastener. A molded dip holds the watch in place, reinforced by what feels like a metal core. We also received a pink version with our review unit, and saw a number of other colors at MWC. The strap’s comfortable, even on my slim wrists, which is helped by the meagre weight of the watch unit. However, while the band feels durable, it’s not particularly stylish — thankfully Sony's also got an adapter on the way that will allow you to use any strap you choose.

Software

The watch uses Bluetooth 3.0 to connect to your phone, and is designed solely for use with Android handsets, specifically with Sony’s Xperia line, though a smattering of phones from other manufacturers are also supported — a full list is available on Sony’s website. Out of curiosity, I tried using the SmartWatch with my HTC Desire running MIUI (admittedly not one of the handsets listed as recommended) using the apps available from Google Play, and found that it couldn’t maintain a reliable connection with the watch.

I also tried connecting it to the Sony Xperia S, one of the phones described as a "perfect partner" to the SmartWatch. Having charged the watch, I paired the handset via Bluetooth, followed the prompts to install the software needed, and upgraded the watch to the latest firmware. So far, so simple.

Here’s where it gets frustrating: configuring and adding apps to the SmartWatch is an unnecessarily laborious process. The only preinstalled app is the Events widget — an aggregator of everything else sent to the watch. To install more apps, you’re directed to the Android Market (now the Play Store) to download and install each and every one. Once you’ve added an app, you head back to the SmartWatch configuration pane, which is present in your Android notification tray whenever the watch is connected. From there, you can configure the downloaded watch app’s behavior, what accounts to use, whether it should show as a widget, and so on. The whole process is just needlessly complex. Since it’s a totally proprietary system, it seems strange that Sony hasn’t created its own method of adding apps to the device, when offering one-click installations would be much simpler. It's worth mentioning that I was using a preview version of the watch, so this software might be updated by launch, but as things stand it's overly complicated.

Usability

Once you’ve gotten past the configuration process, you can finally use the watch itself. There’s a moment of real geeky glee when you first start using it — anyone who grew up watching Star Wars or Power Rangers is bound to have images of using the SmartWatch as a communicator as you see data beginning to appear on the device. Over 40 apps are available for the watch (mainly from third-party developers), offering the core functions you’d expect like call handling, text messaging, music controls, Facebook, and Twitter. There are also a few surprises: the remote viewfinder app is especially impressive, showing the output of the phone’s camera on the tiny display and allowing you to focus and trigger the shutter. It's a neat trick, though I can’t imagine too many situations where it’d come in useful.

Most watch apps have two views: a full-screen mode and a widget, the latter offering the most recent piece of information at a glance. Full apps generally offer more depth — you can read whole tweets or Facebook status updates, for example — though any input from you is limited to one preset, which you edit from the phone.

Apps alert you to notifications by vibrating the device and displaying a logo on the screen showing which app has something new. It’s not as interactive as you might expect, though — tapping on the notification doesn’t send you to the latest tweet or missed call, leaving you to navigate through the menus to get to whatever needs your attention.

The interface itself has a definite learning curve. Navigation is far from intuitive, with some of the gestures to control the device and the logic behind the system feeling almost arbitrary. The primary view is a digital watch face with date in one corner — tap that and you’re taken to the most recent screen. Tapping with two fingers will take you up a level in the menu system. These taps and swipes eventually become second nature, but I was left confused for a few minutes as I tried to find the apps that I’d just installed — your widgets are the default view.

One area the device has obvious potential in is sports, though the only fitness-related app right now is Google Tracks. Sony's promised that a partner app for Endomondo Sports Tracker is on the way, which will offer your time and calories burned, and is aiming to have it available when the SmartWatch launches. A big issue for almost any Android user is also the lack of Gmail integration — a third-party app will notify you if you get an email, but won’t show you the sender or subject. This is a limitation of the Gmail app itself, but it definitely affects the usefulness of the watch.

The SmartWatch is still able to tell the time even if it loses connection with your phone, a critical upgrade from the LiveView. Following an initial sync, the time is memorized for as long as the watch has power, and you’re no longer left with a useless weight mounted on your wrist when your phone isn't connected.

Sony claims that the watch can manage 3-4 days in constant use before recharging, or up to two weeks while on standby. My testing gave me no reason to question this, and your phone’s battery will undoubtedly die long before the watch.

Samsung is probably trying to apply its smartphones strategy on tablets, as the company is launching Android tablets of varied specification in the Indian market. Starting from 7-inch, the Korean manufacture has a tablet for you in almost every possible size - 7.7-inch, 8.9-inch, and 10.1-inch.

The recently launched Galaxy Tab 2 310 is company's first Ice Cream Sandwich tablet to reach India and it is also a device that marks a big shift in company's target market. Instead of going after the iPad buyers, Samsung has realised that it is better to target buyers that don't have the budget to opt for iPad and can compromise a bit on features.

The Galaxy Tab 2 310 comes at almost half the price at which original Galaxy Tab was launched in India and has similar features, but has the reduction in price impacted the overall performance of the device? We find out in this review.

Hardware

Apart from the original 7-inch Galaxy Tab, all the Samsung tablets look identical, with just a few aesthetic differences, but that in itself is not essentially a bad thing. The new Galaxy 2 310 looks nice and fits firmly in hand.

The tablet back is made of matte plastic and is resistant to fingerprints unlike the front, which just loves them.

The tablet comes with microSD card and regular SIM card slot on the left, while volume rocker and power button are present on the right. The illustration on the SIM slot is, strangely, not indicative of the way the SIM is supposed to be inserted - we wasted quite a bit of time with that!

There is no Micro-USB port on the device and company has included a proprietary data cum charging port on the bottom that is joined by the stereo speakers and primary mic. The top houses the 3.5mm audio jack and secondary mic.

Overall, Tab 2 310 has been put together very well and the sturdy build is certainly a positive for it.

Display

Samsung has opted for 1024x600p PLS display instead of much fancier AMOLED displays. PLS display are said to be brighter than normal LCD and offer better viewing angles, which is true for Tab 2 310 apart from the glare, but make no mistake - it is just your average display. and Its compromised for reducing the pricing of Tab 2,

The touchscreen on the tablet is also prone to smudges and fingerprints.

If you have seen the Retina display on the new iPad or even the Super AMOLED Plus on Galaxy Tab 680, you won't be too happy with PLS on the P3100. The whites are a little yellowish and blacks are also on the grey side.

Camera

Samsung has included a 3MP rear camera and VGA front camera on Tab 2 310. While, you won't be using this tablet as your primary imaging device, but still the rear camera leaves a lot to be desired. The quality of images is average and as there is no flash, you will hardly be able to take any decent shots in low-light conditions.

Software/ User Interface

The handset-makers have have been slow in bringing Android 4.0 smartphones in India but for tablets it has been a totally different story. Manufacturers ranging from Micromax to Zync to Milagrow, all have released multiple ICS tablets in the country. In that respect, Samsung is actually quite late in releasing its ICS tablet, while the relatively unknown makers have flooded the market with their latest ICS offerings.

Coming back to Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 310, this tablet runs on Android 4.0.3 with Touchwiz UX on top. Similar to what we have seen on the smartphone, Ice Cream Sandwich is also a big improvement over Honeycomb on tablets.

The whole experience of using the ICS is pleasant and there is no lag, but surprisingly we saw a lot of shutter on the home-screen.

Another positive of having ICS on the device is the ability to install Chrome browser, which has just come out of beta and certainly is a must-have for every user.

One of the major issues that keep plaguing every Android tablet is the lack of optimised apps, and the story is same with Galaxy Tab 2 310. The number of tablet optimised apps is increasing but it is still quite low when compared to iOS.

The front camera is usable and you won't have any issues video chats on the tablet.

On the pre-installed apps front, Samsung has included its own set of mini-apps (such as alarm, calculator, e-mail, music player, etc.) that do not take full screen space and can be overlaid on any running apps.

These mini-apps are very useful at times and can be opened from anywhere on the tablet by simply tapping on the arrow present on the bottom panel.

Other pre-loaded apps include ChatON, Photo Editor, zPolaris Office, Readers Hub, World Clock and Video maker.

Performance/ Battery Life

The Galaxy Tab 2 comes with 1GHz TI OMAP dual-core processor with 1GB of RAM, which is more than enough to give decent performance and it succeeds in that. Apart from the occasional hiccups and shutters, the tablet is pretty smooth.

Tab 2 310 also comes with 3G connectivity with voice calling support and it works as anticipated. You can make voice calls, sent text messages and get 3G data, when you have no Wi-Fi access. In a country like India, where you don't find Wi-Fi hotspot that commonly, having 3G on the tablet is certainly a big value addition.

The game playback is decent and games like Temple Run, BackStab, Asphalt 6 and Shadowgun worked perfectly.

The tablet comes with 4000 mAh battery, which is same as found in Galaxy Tab 620, and you will get almost two days of battery backup on regular use. However, if you are a 3G network hog, don't expect it to last more than a day on heavy use.

The Wi-Fi and Bluetooth work just fine, however the Wi-Fi range is less than other tablets in the market.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 follows on from the runaway success that was the Samsung Galaxy S2, which won great praise and sold in huge numbers, helping Samsung snag the crown of the biggest mobile phone manufacturer in the world.

The S3 has gone big on innovation, with lots of new features the speculation hadn’t dreamed of. But the first thing you notice is the size. Samsung has shown it can make a success of big screens with the 5.3in display on the Samsung Galaxy Note.

But that’s not a phone, it’s a new breed of device somewhere between a phone and a tablet. Rivals like HTC had been stretching our mitts with 4.7in display blowers such as the HTC One X. Can the S3 take on HTC's flagship model and is it better than than the Sony Xperia S? And will it have iPhone 4S fans defecting to Android? Here's what we thought...

Samsung Galaxy S3: Build

The S3 has a 4.8in display and it's certainly big. It’s a slim phone from front to back so it’s more manageable than you might think, but even so. Actually, what helps more in terms of comfort is the gloss finish. It’s like a smooth, flat worry stone that you can roll seamlessly through your fingers. A matte finish wouldn’t have felt as good.

Though some will feel that the glossy coat looks a bit, well, plasticky. But it feels appealingly shiny and reassuringly solid despite a removable battery. Where rivals like the Nokia Lumia 900 and HTC One X have maximised battery life by sealing it inside, and thus created a flex-free handset, the S3 is pleasingly non-creaky, no matter how you hold it.

Sometimes a new phone is only a gentle upgrade over the last model, but the S3 is streets ahead of the S2. It’s not quite as slim, though at 8.6mm it’s just a tenth of a millimetre fatter and it lacks the earlier phone’s bulge.

And it’s still thinner than the HTC One X, Motorola RAZR Maxx, iPhone 4S and many others. In terms of other important stats - it's 70.6mm across, 136.6mm long and weighs 133g

Samsung Galaxy S3: Screen

Back to the size. If your hands can, er, handle it, the positive consequence is a superbly viewable screen. Video playback on a mobile is always a questionable priority – if you can’t watch on a TV, a tablet makes much more sense – but with 4.8ins of high-resolution Super AMOLED screen with its vivid colours and contrasty blacks, this makes it more of a possibility than before.

The screen resolution is identical to the HTC One X, so the pixels per inch aren’t quite as high on this slightly bigger screen, but both displays look lush and inviting, with this one winning in terms of bright, rich colours.

Samsung Galaxy S3: Ice Cream Sandwich

The Galaxy S III uses the very latest version of Android, 4.0.3, codenamed Ice Cream Sandwich. This is far and away the best version of Google’s operating system, with a cleaner look than before.

Ice Cream Sandwich lets you put these buttons as virtual icons onscreen, like on the Galaxy Nexus. Here there’s a physical home button, an elongated strip in the centre of the phone’s face at the bottom. Either side are two virtual capacitive buttons. Samsung has rejected the Recent Apps button in favour of Back and Menu options. Much better. And if you need it, a long press on the home button brings up the Recent Apps screen.

The latest OS doesn’t just offer yet another tempting-sounding treat to get our mouths watering. It’s a whole new interface which is redesigned throughout in contrast to previous iterations which have felt like layer after layer glued on top of the previous code. It includes nifty features like face unlock which matches you to a previously taken photo to launch the phone from idle.

ICS brought Recent Apps front and centre – though the S3 has de-emphasised it again. Samsung adds its own refinements, like the capability to take a screen shot by wiping your hand across the screen.

Samsung Galaxy S3: Features

It's the new features on the Galaxy S3 which really stand out. There’s S Voice, which is a voice recognition service after Siri’s heart, designed by Vlingo (a company which is now being bought by Nuance, who contributed to Apple products and, presumably, Siri).

Although it’s competent, it lacks Siri’s wit and whimsy, so you’re best sticking to straightforward commands. Like Siri, it’s not invariably accurate and it is server-driven so won’t work at all without a decent data connection. Even so, it’s good fun and there’s something slightly magical about it.

And Smart Stay, which uses the front-facing camera to periodically check if it can recognise a pair of eyes looking at it and if not, it turns the screen off to save power.

There’s also Smart Call, which dials a contact’s number for you by raising the phone to your ear from the contact details screen. True, these seem like nothing more than gimmicks, but they are quite cool ones.

Perhaps the most gimmicky of all, Social Tag uses facial recognition to match faces in photographs with the profile photos in your contacts. Now, assuming the profile photo isn’t of a dog or a witty poster, the phone shows that contact’s latest status update and makes it easy to call or message them. We can’t see it catching on.

Samsung has tried to create the phone that has everything and it's not far short of the mark. So there’s NFC, the contactless technology that has yet to find widespread use, though it’s good for Android Beam to transfer contacts between compatible Android handsets.

Samsung takes this one big step further with the inclusion of S Beam which adds WiFi Direct to the wireless transfer connection so you can beam video files quickly between S3s.

You can throw content from the phone to a suitably equipped TV if you find the 4.8in display doesn’t do your movies justice while a feature called Smart Alert makes sure you know about missed calls or messages by gently vibrating or whistling a merry tune.

Samsung Galaxy S3: Hubs

With so many apps to choose from, how do you know what’s good and what’s not? Samsung's Game Hub has a (small) selection of recommended titles. Some are free, and then there are premium apps to pay for. Helpfully some games can be tried before you cough up money.

The Music Hub is now up to version 3.0 (HD) and promises to be “the complete music solution for your Samsung device”.You can also upload tracks from your personal music collection so you can listen to them everywhere. It has a neat interface and a huge catalogue – 17 million tracks.

The Video Hub is is where to go for movies – though there’s also Google Play, of course, which is arguably more attractively laid out. Like the Game Hub, there are helpful recommendations from best-selling to staff picks.

Samsung Galaxy S3: Camera

Last year, the Galaxy S2’s 8MP camera was above average. Now the competition has caught up and the S3 was rumoured to be getting a 12 megapixel camera, but instead it's got the same snapper as the S2. Still, it’s a decent sensor which delivers strong results and you can also capture full HD 1080p video.

The front camera sports a 1.9MP sensor and can capture 720p video at the same time as taking a still picture.

So you won’t be short of features to play with. Which drains the battery, of course. The other advantage of a phone this big is it can cram in a large battery. The one in the S3 goes on and on – unlike some Android phones in the past which conk out after lunch. And since it’s a removable battery, you can carry a spare as well (although, we've yet to find anybody that actually does this).

Speed is important, especially when you want to do more with your phone, like play high-definition video smoothly. So the on-board quad-core processor really helps. It’s not quite as fast as the one in the HTC One X, but it’s a real powerhouse that never slows down however much demand you’re placing on it.

A second microphone means call quality is good and signal strength was solid and strong. This is the most feature-packed Android phone yet, and one of the most powerful. If you’re an iPhone user who’s feeling their handset’s a bit puny in comparison, this is the best time to make the switch from iOS to Google – though it’s still nowhere near as intuitive to use.

Although you can opt for a Galaxy S3 with a huge 64GB storage (coming soon), the phone also has a microSD slot – unlike the HTC One X, iPhone S and many other rivals.

Samsung Galaxy S3: Verdict

For Android lovers, it’s hard to fault the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the only other handset to come close is the HTC One X – and it comes very close. The S III wins out for features and innovations. But, be warned, it’s going to be too big for some hands.

The S3 is a mighty big phone that’s powerful, feature-packed and exceptionally desirable.
