What inspired me to write my book
by Kaylie Austen

I've always had a love for Greek mythology, so much so that in middle school I chose Latin as my required language course and was the champion of the Greek Mythology portion of the Latin Decathlon. Something about the twisted relationships, tangled webs, treachery, and amazing powers lingered in my head through all these years.

I wanted to write a paranormal mystery (prompted by coworkers) but didn't want to use vampires, werewolves, witches, angels, or demons. So, I combined my love for mythology and made the characters descendants of the Greek gods. They are their own character, new and modern, but with the same sort of warped lineage and life as the gods.

Most people love a happy ending, and I’m not saying Hellhound doesn't have one, but I want readers to stay up at night and wonder “what if”, and that’s where the tragic sequence of events comes in.

Selene is the Hellhound, a powerful and ruthless descendent of the Greek gods. She is bound by tradition and tied by bloodlines to lead her people against the mortals. Although she is arranged to marry Nathanial, she falls for Demetrius, the self-professed Black Angel, and things take a bitter twist. When she stumbles across the corpses of her father and Nathanial, all eyes move in on Demetrius. Selene must take the assignment to hunt down her accused lover. Facing the untrustworthy cerebral chamber, powerful shape-shifting sentinels, superhuman archers, and a deceitful Council, the Hellhound must work quickly to uncover the truth before she is forced to annihilate her lover.

About Kaylie Austen

I was born during a monsoon in an Indian village that lacked both a doctor and a hospital, but had many nesting cobras nearby. That’s the most fascinating thing about me. Other than that, I’m a true Texan raised in Austin, and yes, I bleed orange (Longhorns!). Currently, I reside in the Pacific Northwest where my muse takes my imagination through many tales of adventure, romance, and plain awesomeness. Review: This gorgeous cover is so deceptive, I don't know what I was expecting but it definitely wasn't the terrifying world which was created inside the pages of this book.

So we have Elysium which is this underwater utopia ruled by one called Mother, if that isn't twisted enough there is Evie who is considered the daughter of the people and is being trained to take over after Mother, only thing is the Evie we first meet is the conditioned, brainwashed Evie one who doesn't have any recollection of her past and who she really is. Then there are all the brainwashed people who reside in Elysium and let someone not fit the mold of what Mother expects ...they end up "disappearing".

What I loved the most about Renegade was that it wasn't predictable. I thought I knew what was going to happen but when you have a character such as Mother who is one of the most manipulative characters I've read about in a while things are not always what you expect.

As for Evie at first I didn't really care much for her but once she started snapping out of her conditioning I grew to like her a lot. Lets just say she goes from being kind of boring to a complete bad-ass. As for Gavin he was a loyal decent guy but I don't know he just didn't take my breath away or anything like that.

Overall if you love dystopian reads or just have the sudden curiosity to read about a underwater world which involves mind control and other horrific ways of controlling the mass population then check out Renegade.

Excerpt While walking south on Main Street, Matty and Iris traded shopping bags. She cocked her head sideways while looking at the cover of the book he bought her.

“Black Sheep,” she read aloud thoughtfully. “Alice Glass. Why do I know that name?”

“She wrote the novel that ‘Marker’ is based on,” he replied, referring to a SteerNet serial about to be cancelled in its first season.

“Ugh,” she said, dropping her hand. The book slapped her leg. “That show is horrible.”

“Agreed, but never mind that. ‘Black Sheep’ is by far her best work.”

“I’ll give it a try,” Iris said. “Take a look in yours.”

He pulled the small paperback out his. Peter Oldham was his mother’s favorite historical fiction author. Matty recognized “Drops in August” as soon as the corner of the cover cleared the paper sleeve. He bit his tongue to keep from groaning.

“Oh, God,” she said, likely in reaction to the cringe he failed to hold back. “Maybe this was a bad idea.”

Thinking of his mother, and her repeated suggestions that he read the book, Matty’s initial disappointment dissipated. “No, this is good,” he told Iris.

“That’s not what your face says.” She reached for the book.

“Oh, no!” He shook his head and moved his hand out of her reach. “This will do very nicely.”

“Nicely? For what?” She crossed in front of him and walked backward, reaching for the book as he whipped his hand up and behind his head.

“For a joke on my parents.”

She stopped cold in her tracks. He planted his feet so that he wouldn’t run into her, but his momentum carried him forward anyway. She put her hands forward to stop him from falling, but when he hit them, she lost her footing and stumbled backwards. He lunged forward and caught her in his arms.

When he regained his balance and stopped her fall, she was shocked, breathless, and completely supported in his arms at a sharp angle to the ground. People around them on the sidewalk applauded.

One man who passed them said, “Nice catch, kid!”

Matty stepped back and brought her to her feet. She seemed to be searching his eyes for something.

Finally, she asked, “Are you a brat, Matty?”

“Depends.” He felt as if he would shake apart if he let her go. “Do you like brats?”

As her lips pulled into a smile from ear to ear, she touched her forehead to his collarbone. A few moments later, she looked back up at him and squirmed just slightly. He let her shrug him off, and when her arms were free, she slapped his cheek playfully before skipping south on the sidewalk. All of his internal organs melted into his legs. About ten steps later, she turned around.

“Are you coming?” she yelled.

Matty shook off his daze and ran to catch up with her.

That story involved a talisman with crystals that had to be found and assembled before bad things happened, and dialog that read like classroom roll call. Since then, she’s majored in journalism (for one semester), published poetry, taken a course on short novels, and watched most everything ever filmed by Quentin Tarantino. First Line: As she fell to her knees and burst into tears, he looked all around the park.

Review: I liked Gwyneth's character she just wanted to be a normal teenager and wasn't the least bit excited about learning she was the Ruby. Gideon at times was arrogant and it took me some time to warm up to his character. As far as the romance between the two I liked there was no instant love but the romance just happened too fast.

My favorite part of the book was the actual time traveling. I really enjoyed reading about the time periods they traveled to and how well the author described it. It was especially fun learning about the clothes they wore in each of their travels.

Overall the book was unputdownable. The pacing was great the plot was interesting at times a little predictable but it didn't take away from my enjoyment of the book. And what I liked the most was we learned a lot of things right along with the characters.

Maybe I’ll forget this feeling someday. Maybe it’ll just be reduced to a memory made up of a flickering gas heater, the salty dew of his skin and the love in his dark, inky eyes. This feeling of pure unadulterated joy. Of reaching a high so potent that your spirit feels like it’s soaring across the universe…and falling from that glorious peak only to find yourself enveloped in someone’s warm caring hands. Review: I had so many mixed feelings while reading Bloodspell. I loved some parts of it ...okay well mostly the entire vampire vs witches part with the blood curse that seemed pretty demonic in nature but every time the relationship aspect was brought with the indecisiveness of the characters and if they want to be together or not was just so annoying. The first half of the book I would probably give it 2 stars but the last half wow it was awesome and that half I would rate it 4.5 stars.

Minus Victoria's I want to be with you but we can't be together thing that she was doing with Christian and vice versa she was frighteningly powerful. The blood that flows in her seems to have a will of it's own that she has to learn to control otherwise all the blood wants is death and destruction. I'm not going to lie I loved it when she let the blood take over in times of danger because she became so bad-ass and a thrill to read about.

As far as Christian is concerned he didn't wow me at all, especially since he too was guilty of the back and forth of lets be together ... lets not be together game. I was actually more interested in the relationship between him and his twin brother Lucian they have a complicated history that is filled with brotherly love, pain, hurt, vengeance and so much more which I wish the author would have delved a little deeper in.

Overall I'm glad I stuck with the book and didn't write it off as a dnf which I was a little tempted to do in the beginning because it picks up and before I knew it I was done and checking to see if there was a second book to the series. I would recommend this book to anyone who thinks they can stick through a book that has the Twilight syndrome of I love you but we can't be together etc etc...if you can get past that you will discover a wonderful read.

First Line: There were two things in life that scared the ever-loving crap out of me.

Review: I knew I had to get my hands on Wait For You the moment it came out honestly anything by Jennifer Armentrout is a automatic must buy for me since everything she writes is just downright amazing and Wait For You wasn't any different.

So Avery 's home situation sucked plain and simple. She went through something horrific that no girl should ever have to go through and then to top it off her parents care more about image then their own daughter so when it comes time for college Avery packs up and goes to one thousands of miles away from everyone she knows. And there she meets Cam.

I want Cam! He was one of the most swoon worthy male character leads I have read in a while. He knows something is holding Avery back from pursuing a relationship of any sort with him so he stays patient and becomes one of her closest friends while still taking the time out every once in a while to ask her out ... which she sweetly always rejects. But it wasn't like Avery is playing hard to get the girl has some serious understandable issues that keep her from giving into him.

Armentrout did a wonderful job developing the characters especially Avery, you saw and felt every bit of her struggle to come to terms with what happened to her while trying to still slowly but surely move on with her life without it holding her back.

Overall Wait For You sucked me in from the very beginning. It was emotional yet sexy and the sexual tension between Cam and Avery had me glued to the book.

Review: Even though this book had quite a few cliches which seem to be popular in the new adult genre I really liked this book, I found myself reading it late into the night and after I was finished I had to see if there was a book two because the main characters and even the secondary characters were pretty awesome.

Ella and Micha have been childhood friends growing up next door to each other, they both come from really messed up situations and have come to heavily rely on each other. Ella wants to forget her past and a particular night eventually pushes her to the edge and she takes off to college and leaves everything and everyone behind including Micha. Not telling anyone where she is headed. She reinvents herself at college changing her appearance and also becoming more mellow then the fiery girl she used to be. But 8 months later she has no choice but to go home for summer break and deal with the past that she was so hell bent on leaving behind.

The book has alternating point of views between and Ella and Micha and I always love when authors do that because it helps me know what both the characters are feeling. I loved Ella's character she has such a struggle inside of her, she blames herself for what happened to her mom and lets it eat away at her very core and the fear of what she might become keeps her from giving in to her feelings for Micha. Then we have Micha, who is just such an amazing friend to her and so much more. He refuses to let the Ella he knew vanish and is determined to bring her back and wow the boy loves her so much, the chemistry between the two characters were breathtaking.

Lila and Ethan also stood out to me in the book, Lila is Ella's friend the one that had no clue about the "real Ella" and Ethan is Micha's friend who knows everything about Ella and Micha and their history. You can tell Ethan has a complicated back story and I didn't expect much out of Lila's character or for her to stay around long since she was just staying for the night and it sounded like her life was perfect so why would she stick around right...anyways I was wrong she has some issues what they are I don't really know but I'm sure we will find out soon since the third book is going to be about them :) So I'm excited for that.

Overall I enjoyed The Secret of Ella and Micha and can't wait to get my hands on the second book The Forever of Ella and Micha to see what happens next.

I graduated from college in Texas with a fine arts degree, and then freelanced as an art director at a graphic design firm for eight years. I dreamed of working in children's books, so I moved to New York City and became associate art director in Scholastic trade books, where I designed books for children and worked with editors and illustrators. It was a great job.

I illustrated my first published children's book in 1992 and soon began illustrating full time. I began completing manuscripts and mailing them out to publishers in the early 1990s. In 1996, I sold my first two manuscripts -- Boo Who? A Spooky Lift-the-Flap Book (Scholastic) and Pen Pals (Grosset & Dunlap). Yippee!

Review:I freakin love love love Tamani he is such an amazing character!...Now that I got that out of the way on to the actual review... :)

I really enjoyed Illusions mainly because there was way more of Tamani then the previous two books and then of course we get to see his pov in things also. In this one Laurel isn't really able to brush him aside like she was able to do in the first two books because in Illusions the guy takes up the role of her guardian and is pretty much wherever she is always protecting her.

The book had some plot development but nothing too exciting happened until maybe the last few chapters of the book. We are introduced to a new character Yuki who starts attending Laurels school, nothing to alarming except when you add in the fact that she is under Klea's care. Illusions was more so romance based and i'm not even going to lie when I say I loved every minute of it. I love seeing Laurel and Tamani together and it was fun seeing her discover that maybe her feelings for Tamani are stronger then she realized. I even enjoyed seeing her getting jealous over Tamani flirting with Yuki (although he had alterior motives, the guy clearly only has eyes for Laurel).

Also of course there was David, I don't know why I just don't care for his character at all. He is a good guy, very caring and loyal to Laurel but dammit he is not Tamani ...end of story. For some reason I really see him better off with Chelsea.

The book also ends with a huge cliffhanger although to me it was just so abrupt if that makes any sense. Anyways i'm glad I waited for the series to come out fully before diving into it because I wouldn't have had the patience to sit around and wait for the final book. Overall a great read and if you haven't picked up the series I highly recommend it.

Review: I loved the idea behind this book, it was so cute and adorable. And for the first half or so of the book I was leaning towards a strong 3.5 rating but as the book progressed things just got a little to weird and scattered that by the time I was done reading it it dropped to a 2.5.

Audrey is in high school she was once part of the popular crowd but now hangs out with the "geeks" who spend most of their time in the computer lab. She has some amazing skills when it comes to hacking and programming thanks to her father ( who passed away her freshmen year ). The girl is smart but sadly her and her mom don't have much money to send her to college so when one of the nations hugest tech companies starts up a contest to where whoever creates the most popular app will get two hundred thousand for college Audrey jumps at the chance and creates a boyfriend app. And everything is going good until all hell breaks loose.

Before I get into what didn't work for me I'll talk about some of the things I did enjoy. I really liked Audrey and her set of friends. Mindy, Nigit, Aidan and her cousin Lindsey were all amazing characters and really good friends that a girl would be lucky to have. As for Audrey even though half the computer tech stuff she talked about I could not make any sense of, she was very believable. I never doubted her or her computer skills.

Now as for what didn't work for me, when the app was first created it was cute, people were hooking up and then the problem arose that the app wasn't the matchmaker it was thought to be when people were getting rejected so then Audrey went and created a newer version of the app thanks to some major conspiracy theory type plot twist and well that is where things got a little messy and at times just too unbelievable. The book went from cute where a girl is just trying to make it through high school and get some money for college to it involving top level executives trying to ruin Audrey's life. Also this book went with the stereotypical ex best friend mean girl and the girl put mean to an extreme. I've been seeing that in so many of the books I've been reading lately it's really just starting to annoy me especially since they are not even believable, maybe in some H.S some where in the world there are mean girls like that but it's still a little hard to believe.

Overall the book had lots of potential but even with my issues I found it to be a quick read.

Review: I love books that revolve around witches but Spellbinding just did not grab me in the way I thought it would.

Spellbinding is about a girl named Abby who has some insane nightmares that haunt her and eventually she discovers she is more then just an ordinary girl. Via a class project at school Abby discovers her link to Salem and the witch trials that occurred there in the 1600's along with discovering her new found magical powers.

When I first started reading I was semi-hooked because the prologue did have me a little curious but soon after that everything just kind of spiraled downwards from there. I found way too many cliches such as the mean girls who loved to bully Abby, then there was Abby who thought of herself as nothing special looks wise etc and she lusted after the popular guy at school who barely noticed her and was dating the mean girl. Then the love triangle that was just annoying because it was thanks to the selfishness of our main character that one of them even was so madly in love with her.

Another problem I had was that Abby is supposed to be sixteen so you think she would sound and act like one but instead you would think she was a middle grader. I just found her actions to be way too immature even for a sixteen year old. The plot was also predictable nothing happened that I didn't already see coming. And also the way she came about her powers were just too easy all of a sudden she can just do magic not even a little struggle of any sorts.

I usually have some positive things to say about a book but this one just rubbed me the wrong way. It's hard to enjoy a book when you have character who's action frustrates the hell out of you to where you can't stand her anymore and actually really come to hate the character. The romance that did occur between Abby and Rem (where no love potion was involved...thank goodness) well it didn't feel real at all. And then I started questioning Rem and how he was all ready to be with her even though he knows she casted a love spell on another guy.

Overall this book was not something I enjoyed nor could I recommend.

Review: I really need to read more steampunk because I really enjoyed The Iron Thorn. Now it did take me a few chapters to get fully sucked into the story since I felt it started off a little slow but once things took off and all these crazy twists kept being thrown in and people not being who you think they are ... well I was totally invested in the book.

The romance scenes could have been done more better they were a little lackluster but the characters Aoife ( I still am not sure how to pronounce that), Dean and Cal were all very intriguing. I loved Dean because of how strong of a character he was and then there was Cal who is Aoife's best friend and was a total surprise in many ways. And then Aoife who was just as strong of a character as her male counterpart Dean. The girl had balls and was not afraid of a little adventure.

Overall the world building was done very well and quite unique. I found this to be an enjoyable read and will be picking up the next book soon.
