Submissions

The 2026 Alice James Award is currently open to submissions through October 17th, 2025. The contest welcomes full-length, previously unpublished poetry manuscripts from emerging and established poets residing in the United States. Submissions must be 48-100 pages in length with a $30 entry fee.

Manuscripts are screened anonymously, with each submission read by at least two people. Finalists are selected and then reviewed by the Editorial Board, which chooses the winner. The winning manuscript receives $2000, book publication, and distribution through Consortium. Additionally, one or more manuscripts may be selected as the Editor’s Choice for publication.

Alice James Books also has a Translation Series, though it is not currently accepting submissions. The press does not accept unsolicited manuscripts outside of the award period.

Upcoming

The annual Autumn House Press Contests award publication of full-length manuscripts in Poetry, Fiction, and Nonfiction. Each winner also receives $2,500 ($1,000 advance against royalties and a $1,500 travel/publicity grant to promote the book). The submission period opens January 1, 2017 and the postmark deadline for entries is June 30, 2017.

The Rising Writer Contest is for a first full-length book of poetry by an author 33 years old or younger. In addition to publication the winner also receives $1,000 ($500 advance against royalties and a $500 travel/publicity grant to promote the book). The submission period opens November 1, 2017 and the postmark deadline is January 31, 2018.

For the 2017 contest, the preliminary judges are members of the Autumn House staff, and the final judge is Alison Hawthorne Deming. The winner will be awarded publication of a full-length manuscript and $2,500. The submission period opens January 1, 2017 and the postmark deadline for entries is June 30, 2017.

Coal Hill Review, Autumn House Press’ online imprint, holds an annual poetry chapbook contest. We are interested in a wide range of poetry. We ask that all submissions come through our annual contest.

C&R Press submissions are open for our Winter Soup Bowl Chapbook and New York reading series.

C&R Press is engaging more than ever in our community, seeking diverse and submerged voices, hosting readings and events at festivals from the Brooklyn Book Festival and the Miami Book Festival, to Sewanee and the Texas Book Festival, to off-site gatherings at AWP (2/10/17 @18th Street Lounge).

C&R has never held a formal reading period. We accept work that will hold people’s attention for years to come. It’s true that not all submitted work can be taken for publication, but please know each contribution helps support our cause (we’re poets and writers, too!)—which is to celebrate and promote literature. We are very selective when choosing genres with a preferrence to unique ideas.

Right now we are looking for horror, suspense, cozy mystery, supernatural thriller, and mystery.
There are a few genres we will be very selective about because of market saturation. Genres include young adult, paranormal romance, contemporary romance, dystopian, urban fantasy, gothic romance and science fiction.

Although rare, we do look submissions regarding short stories, flash fiction and poetry.
What we look for when reading pitches: Strong world development, deep character arcs, flawed characters, showing not telling, well-edited writing, original ideas, and consistent characters. Having these things will be more likely to land our interest as we are avid readers as well.

Something important to note is in order to make sure our authors are properly taken care of we only accept submissions during certain submission periods. This gives us time to consider each query with the utmost of care. Any submission outside of tyese periods will not be considered.

Zimbell House Publishing is an independent partnership publishing company founded in 2014 that combines the best of traditional services, today’s technology, and shared marketing. Our goal is to partner with our authors to help publish and promote quality work that readers demand.

A Look at the Publishing Process with Zimbell House:

If your manuscript is accepted by Zimbell House Publishing you will be assigned an editor that will help you with developmental, line/copy, and other editing of your work. Every manuscript that we work with goes through a four-step editorial process. This entire editorial process typically takes four-five months.

During this editorial time-frame, our art department is busy creating the cover art and marketing materials for your media kit. You’ll be asked to provide a synopsis/blurb for the back cover, a couple of different bio’s and a head-shot. Don’t worry, we help polish them for you. Your Library of Congress number is obtained and the ISBNs are assigned for each edition of the book. The bar-code for the print edition(s) is/are created and assigned.

When the work on the manuscript is deemed ready, it is sent to our layout department, which creates the print layout(s) and two eBook layouts (one for Kindle and an ePub version for every other digital device). Once the e-galley is created, your editor will send it to you to go over with instructions on what to do if you wish to make changes at this stage. Once those changes (if any) are updated by the layout department, a print galley is ordered. This is a physical proof of the book and normally takes about two weeks to receive from the printer (as much as we would love to be their only client, we have to work within their production schedules). Once we have it in our hot little hands, your editor will contact you and set up a meeting to go over what is called a red-pen edit, which is the 4th stage of edits (if you are local to the editor). If you are not local to your editor, it will be mailed to you with instructions on how to proof the book and make any last changes. Once your editor receives the corrected proof back from you, our layout department will make the corrections and do a final proofreading edit.

During this hectic time, our marketing department has been busy contacting the distributors to let them know about your upcoming book, sending ARC’s (Advanced Reading Copies) to reviewers (it can take up to six months to receive some reviews) and coming up with book club questions to assist reading groups with their future discussions about your book. They are setting up Goodreads Giveaway campaigns and others. Marketing will contact you at various stages during the process to get your social media platform information to include with the media kit.

Shortly, you will receive an email from your editor letting you know the release date for your book–the champagne can be uncorked! Sit back and enjoy the moment, because the hard part starts next.

Marketing. It’s a never ending job. Zimbell House Publishing has relationships with global distributors, as well as Amazon, Kindle, Barns N Noble, Baker & Taylor, and Ingram to name a few. Our sales staff continually update the independent booksellers, libraries and so forth. Zimbell House also expects you, the author, to get involved in the marketing of your book with social media and signing events. Don’t worry—we don’t leave you on your own, our marketing department is there to assist you through the process. We work in tandem with our authors to get the word out! For the life of the contract, we will continue to help you market your book.

The entire process, from submission acceptance to publication, can take about eight months to a year. It may seem like a long time, but we want to get it right, and so should you. It’s all about ramping up the awareness of your book, and just getting pre-release reviews can take six to eight months. A faster turn around means corners get cut, and no one wants that. At Zimbell House Publishing, your success is our success.

Submissions

We are currently accepting submissions from new and established authors. For an evaluation of your work, we require a full manuscript.

Submission Guidelines:
The manuscript must be in 12 point font, double spaced, one-inch margins and in either Microsoft Word format or RTF.

Your manuscript will be evaluated by our acquisitions editorial staff and an evaluation/review of your submission will be returned to you normally within twelve to sixteen weeks. Even if we reject your submission, you will have an explanation of why we could not bring it to press.

The following genres are currently being considered:
Literary fiction; All genres of fiction for young adult, new adult, and adult readers; Children’s chapter books; Non-fiction in various subjections, including cooking, memoirs, bio/autobiographies, photography, and self-help.

You wrote your manuscript, you had beta readers give you advice, you made corrections, fleshed out the plot line and gave your character’s personality. You’ve gone over it so many times you’re sick of it, and now you have the unmitigated joy of submitting your work to publishing houses. You’re ready. One hand holds the aspirin bottle while the other hovers over the submit button. A small panic sets in and self-doubt threatens. With steely resolve, your finger descends…click…and your baby is on its way. It’s no longer a manuscript, but a—submission. Now what?

A few weeks go by, perhaps a couple of months or so, then it happens—an emailed response to your submission! You know logically there are only two possible outcomes. The dreaded decline letter, or the dreamed of acceptance proposal. Your mouth goes dry, your hands sweat, then you pull up that steely resolve again and open that email.

We get it and we understand. We’ve been there too. That’s why we at Zimbell House strive to keep the lines of communication open from the moment we receive your submission. Our acquisitions team emails you a response that we received your submission and will let you know when to expect a review of your work. If we decline your submission, we tell you why. However, if we accept your submission, not only will we celebrate your success with you, but the reality of publication will be underway.

Moonshine Cove Publishing, LLC is a small independent publisher of both fiction and non-fiction based in the Appalachian foothills region of South Carolina. We are not a vanity press, subsidy publisher or so-called self-publisher meaning our authors do not pay us anything at all to have their books published. We are, however, highly selective, accepting only about 10% of the manuscripts offered to us. We provide a written critique to the author for each manuscript we publish. Our books are distributed nationally and internationally through Ingram and many regional wholesalers. They may be purchased online at Amazon and Barnes and Noble as well as in most bookstores.

Before you decide to query us, make sure you will be happy with us if we offer you a contract. We don’t have any huge press runs; as a matter of fact, we don’t have press runs at all. Our books are printed when an order is received. Neat, simple, highly efficient. No warehouses stacked with books that can’t be sold. No waste, no returns, no going out of print—that’s what print on demand technology offers. POD is the wave of the future. The dirty little secret of the big publishers is that they are using this technology too, for their lesser known authors, the ones with names you probably wouldn’t recognize. That’s actually most authors.

We also don’t have any huge budget for publicity. In fact, we make it clear to each and every Moonshine Cove Author that they will have to shoulder most of the responsibility for promoting their book. Most of your sales will be through Amazon instead of book stores. The reason is that, although book stores can order our books, they are unlikely to stock them because we do not accept returns. The exception to this would be independent deals that an author might work out with a store.

As we hope our statement demonstrates, we are also honest with authors, no sales talk, no spin, no rose colored glasses.

What Are We Looking For?

We only publish work that is original and that has not been published before. If we ask to see more, we will let you know. Fiction sub-genres include Fantasy, Coming of Age, Dark Fantasy, Epic, High Fantasy, Magic Realism, Military, Sword & Sorcery, Urban, General Fiction, Absurdist, Religious, Contemporary, Humor/Satire, Political, War, Women’s Fiction, LGTB, Horror, Gothic, Monsters, Occult, Psychological, Supernatural, Vampires, Literary Fiction, Mystery/Thriller, Amateur Sleuths, Cozy, Legal Thriller, Medical Thriller, Crime, Noir, Psychological, Romance, Historical, Science Fiction, Western, and more. Serial Writer Productions is interested in submissions of at least 25K words, throughout all genres. We are particularly interested in crime, horror, romance, thriller/mystery, and sci-fi. We are interested in talented, passionate, and engaging storytellers who are ready to release their creation upon the world.

Non-fiction submissions will be considered in all genres as well. A few of the genres we are particularly interested in are self-help, self-discovery, relationship help, true crime, and business. We are looking for unique non-fiction accounts that reveal the truth behind the facade. We want to have a sense and satisfaction engaging in real life. The non-fiction that we are interested in should be a diamond in the rough, told from a unique and enchanting perspective.

Short Story compilations will also be considered. These stories can be of any genre and can range in technique. The only requirement for these stories is that it leaves a lasting impression on the reader. It could make a point or simply evoke a strong emotion. The stories can be fiction or non-fiction, but they must be memorable. Short stories can be a minimum of 15K words.

Currently, Serial Writer Productions is not accepting poetry submissions.

We are accepting unsolicited manuscripts for picture, middle grade and young adult books. For fiction, the genre is wide open. For nonfiction, we are specifically looking for technology and health & wellness books.

We are one of the few children’s book publishers accepting unsolicited manuscripts. For novels, send a query letter. For illustrations, send three sample illustrations. Paste the query letter in the body of the e-mail and send to submission AT pantsonfirepress DOT com. Text attachments will be deleted. Art may be attached. Before sending us your query please be sure that we are the right kind of publisher for your book. Review our books. Also, note that we do not accept unsolicited novel-length manuscripts. So do not send them! And never send us your original work or art. And finally, we will contact you if we are interested. Finding a book publisher is the dream of many authors, but there are many predatory publishers that will take advantage of authors. Here are few things to consider before finding a book publisher. We want you to have the best experience possible on our site, and the following suggestions are always important to consider before finding a book publishing company.

1. Please do your research. We do not vet the publishers on our site. If we get warnings about publishers from our readers, we try to remove the publisher, but we have 100s of publishers listed here, and we are not responsible for the conduct of the publishers on our site.

2. Do not pay a publisher to publish your work. Publishers should find value in your work, and unless you are self-publishing your work, a publisher should not ask you to pay.

3. Do not pay a publisher to edit your work. If a publisher feels they can make money on your book, they will pay for an editor.

4. Send your work to publishers that are in your genre or area. Sending your book to 100 publishers doesn’t do you any good if they are not accepting books like the book you are trying to publish. It happens all the time. READ THE PUBLISHERS GUIDELINES.

5. If you are going to self-publish your book, make sure you still do your research. We have more information on our self-publisher’s page.

6. If you decide to go with a vanity publisher, make sure you contact authors who have previously published with the company.

Little Curlew is a new independent literary press. We publish big lit — fearless works with a strong ecological undercurrent, including place-based eco-fiction, environmental nonfiction, and environmental journalism.

Submissions

Little Curlew is looking for finely-tuned, completed manuscripts for publication. Our bend is literary rather than genre. We are currently looking for novels, collections of stories, and nonfiction. We are also seeking longer short stories (25-55 pages) to be published as Kindle Singles.

The range of literature we admire is varied. But what we seek most is something we haven’t seen before. We want beautiful. We want poetic. We want subtle. We want your fearless longshot of words on the page. We want works with a strong ecological undercurrent. Of course, there’s no way to tell what exactly we will fall in love with, except by sending it to us, and we encourage submissions of unpublished fiction and nonfiction manuscripts that meet our mission.
