Welcome to my blog Wendy and Myron. Thank you for taking the time to answer a few questions about yourself, your book, writing services and travel experiences.

Q. Tell us about your latest work—title, genre, etc. — and why you wrote it?

A. Cats are creatures with multiple personalities…most of them good. They pay attention to the most important matters at hand and don’t give a second look at something bothersome. We could learn something from them…

That’s why I “asked” my cat, Myron, to share some wisdom on how he lives life. It’s a simple concept, really. But one we often overlook.

This humorous short read reminds us how to slow down and enjoy life like a pampered cat. Remember…don’t take yourself too seriously.

Q What draws you to your genre(s)? Why is this type of story compelling to you?

A. Humor has always been an important part of my life. Seeing things differently is second nature to me. Combining those I watch as Myron often provides me with inspiration as well as humor throughout the day.

Working from a home office, distractions are inevitable. Distractions from him sometimes help my writing or editing processes. Those distractions can help if I get “stuck” when writing. They remind me to look at things differently.

Myron’s antics and his view of life’s issues provided the background for this book.

Q. What is your writing process like? Do you map the whole thing out or do you just let it unfold?

A. I start with an outline. Regardless of the size of the book I am writing…I start with an outline. Often it will be revised and additions will be made. But it is a starting point for me and it keeps me working toward my end result.

Having said that, things do unfold throughout the process. And that’s okay. But I feel it is a more cohesive piece by starting with an outline. It is the roadmap in my process.

Q. What kind of research was involved in writing your book?

A. For this book…not much. Observing my cat is about all it took. That’s not true of other books I have written or am writing, however!

Q. How much of YOU makes it into your characters?

A. Many times, my sense of humor makes it into my characters. For this book…I believe my sense of humor allowed me to take Myron’s antics and expressions and turn them into “lessons”.

Q. What is the most positive experience in your writing process?

A. Helping other authors realize their dream of having their manuscript turned into a book. It happens over and over. Plus, it’s nice when I get a referral from a satisfied client. That always feels great.

Q. What is the hardest part of writing for you?

A. When I am writing a book that requires research…that is a part I do not enjoy doing and becomes a “chore” for me. In a perfect world the research would be already done for me and then I would just use it as I need it.

The other piece is devoting time. As we all know our everyday lives get so involved. Writing is on my calendar but some days I let interruptions take over. I’m getting better about this, though.

Q. Do you have a favorite place where you like to write?

A. In the spring, summer, and fall…by the pool. In the winter…in my office.

Q. How do you balance the need to have time to write with the needs of family, society, etc.?

A. Balancing my writing with other necessities is easier some days than others. For me, I rely heavily on my calendar. I’d like to say I strictly stick to that calendar…but not so.

It does keep me focused and gives me a weekly overview of what I need to get done.

Since I do manuscript editing on a freelance basis sometimes that takes precedence when I should be writing. Therefore, I have developed a system which works fairly well. I devote a full day some weeks or a few half days other weeks to my writing and not my editing business. Those days are added to my calendar.

Throughout the course of writing books and articles I now know what it takes to accomplish a completed project, whether that is a book, e-book, or magazine article. I set a deadline for myself and add it to my calendar. Again, that can change. But I have found it doesn’t change all that much once it is on my calendar.

When I first started I only put my writing on my “imaginary calendar” and not on my “real” one. That did not work. My writing always got lost somewhere.

Q. What do you read for fun when you’re not writing?

A. I love fiction books, humorous books, travel books, inspirational books…depending upon my mood. I also like to read home and garden magazines.

Q. Have there been any authors in particular, that inspired your writing?

A. Styles vary of the authors I love to read. Jack Canfield, John C. Maxwell, Danielle Steele, Erma Bombeck, Nora Roberts, Seth Godin, Robert Kiyosaki, Dave Barry…as you can see this varied list goes on and on.

Q. Is there a story you want to tell behind or about your work(s)?

A. About this book…only that life is short and we need to enjoy it as well as ourselves.

Q. What other projects are you currently working on or about to start?

A. I just co-authored a book about women and success…”My Life the Sequel; a Girlfriend’s Guide to Personal Success”.

Currently I am working on a couple of other books.

I am writing one about my dad and WWII. This is a fiction book, based on facts. Dad had stories but did not share all of them. After he died I found a box of “things” from WWII, with photos, stories, letters, and more. I also learned some things from my aunt. The story is from a daughter’s perspective, finding this box, and remembering the stories as a little girl. That’s why it will be fiction…I do not have all the facts.

Secondly, I am co-authoring a series of children’s books. These will be from Myron’s perspective once again. This time they will have a message for children, one per book. For instance, one will be about saying please and thank you, another will be about telling the truth, another about bullying, and so on.

Q Could you share some of your marketing strategies? Which ones are the most effective in your opinion?

A. I use a management services firm to do my websites, monthly newsletter, social media postings, blogs, and other marketing items. It is up to me to develop how I want things to look, add content to the blogs, write the newsletter, etc. They put it together and do the postings.

This is the part that is my least favorite. Perhaps because I know the least about it!

Again, I add my responsibilities to my calendar. It is on my 2012 list to learn more, develop more of a plan, and move it forward.

Q. What would be the top five, (or 3 or 1 or however many) things you would tell aspiring authors?

A. Educate yourself on the process of writing, researching, editing, publishing, self publishing, and marketing your books.

Gather as much information as possible. If this means taking a workshop, attending a seminar, or whatever…do it.

If you are not already disciplined…develop that discipline.

Develop a process that works for you…start with a calendar to set aside your writing time, research time, etc.

Gather a team to help you…an editor, cover designer, formatter, marketer, web designer, publisher, and more. All of these professionals must be involved if you want a polished product. If you want to write…write. Let other professionals do their parts. You do not need to do it all. In fact, it’s better if you do not.

Q. I understand that you along with your books you provide a writing and editing service. Could you tell our readers about this?

A. Yes. As a published author I understand what it takes for an author to turn his or her writings into a finished product. In my VanHatten Writing Services I offer several approaches for authors.

I offer a One on One Coaching Program where a new author or one needing some extra help can work with me. In this I tailor my program to meet their needs. For instance if a writer is just getting started but keeps getting stuck or off track in their writings…I help them by setting some goals, putting some accountability measures in place, help with developing an outline, and so on. I offer feedback, assistance, and work closely with the writer. Sometimes a seasoned author will hire me to assist in one part of their manuscript in order to get the “flow” better or to develop a character.

In addition, I am a freelance editor for authors. I work with authors of most genres all over the world editing their manuscripts and assisting them in getting their manuscripts ready for publishing. I edit website copy for some business owners, business brochures, magazine articles, promotional submissions, etc.

I am also an editor for a regional magazine in northern California. My travel articles can be found in a quarterly publication, Siouxland.

Q. Is your blog on Travels and Escapes mostly about places you have been? Where is your favorite place in the world?

A. in my Travels and Escapes blog, the places I talk about are places I have been. Occasionally I will give some info regarding a place I have heard about and will ask for feedback from readers. Also, the tips and ideas are ones that have been used by me or by a trusted source. Anything on there will have been tested and tried. All the photos are ones I have taken.

My favorite place…that’s a hard one to answer. There are so many I love. If I could list a few they would include: the northern California coast; Yosemite National Park; Sienna, Italy; Sedona, Arizona; beaches in San Diego, CA; Luxembourg, Napa Valley, CA in the spring…the list goes on and on.

In a nutshell my favorite place is where I am traveling to next.

Welcome to my blog Sarah. Thank you for taking the time to answer a few questions about yourself, your book ‘99 Things Women wish they knew before Getting Fit Without Hitting The Gym’, T.V. appearances, and Dancing with Parkinson’s.

Q. Tell us about your latest work—title, genre, etc. — and why you wrote it?

A. My latest book Getting fit without Hitting the Gym is part of the revolutionary 99 series. It is a practical, fun and simple guide to living a healthier life in the places where you are spending the bulk of your time without having to go to the gym. There is a health crisis with over 3 billion people suffering from obesity on our planet. One of the main reasons is that people have a lack of time and money to workout. In this very unstable economic time people are working more and more hours and can’t seem to find the time to take care of their physical and mental fitness. This book breaks down the perceived barriers to healthy fit living by giving day by day tips and tools to live a more active, mindful and satisfying life through exercise in the places people are spending the bulk of their time.

Q What draws you to your genre(s)? Why is this type of story compelling to you?

A. I have been in the fitness industry for 15 years and have seen trends come and go. The only truly sustainable way to increase your longevity and stay energized and healthy is through exercises. I empathize with the masses that it can be truly impossible to make it to the gym when we have so many obligations with work and family. It is a necessary step to start looking at our environments as our own 24 hour gyms so that we can make practical and incremental efforts to live healthier. I am very inspired and passionate about finding sustainable approaches to healthy fit living. I am not interested in quick fixes, boot camps or spending hours on end working out. I don’t believe that fitness is an all or nothing approach. Healthy living can be obtained by taking little steps each day on the path to longevity and a tight tush! Every little bit of exercise adds up and has a huge pay off for our mind body and soul.

Q. What is your writing process like? Do you map the whole thing out or do you just let it unfold?

A. Usually I brainstorm for a few days and jot down whatever comes to mind. Then I ask clients and other people what their personal challenges are on the subject. I then research answers and try to make them as simple and practical to understand. I always begin with the main chapter headings so there is a clear road that unfolds. I wrote about 5 drafts of this book. If I had more time I would still be doing re –writes!

Q. What kind of research was involved in writing your book?

A. I am a health journal junkie, read magazines, surf the web, and ask professional opinions to make sure I have the facts right. Most importantly I am writing from years of experience in implementing the tips and tools with myself and my clients. I have seen great success with those who fit little bits of exercise in all throughout the day.

Q. How much of YOU makes it into your characters?

A. 100 percent of what I write is personally applicable. Write what you know. I can be confident to say I know about the challenges of fitting it all in. We all face many demands, challenges and barriers to health. I have found ways to leap through the gates and make mindful minute by minute changes to make life easier and more enjoyable to live.

Q. How do you balance the need to have time to write with the needs of family, society, etc.?

A. When I am writing (even now as I fill out this interview) I set my alarm 2 hours before the household wakes up! I need absolute quiet! I am a single mom and have a dog and run a few businesses. Once my son and dog wake up it’s a bit of a scramble. I work best in the morning …my brain turns to mush at 7pm at night.

Q. When you are able to take time away from writing and your business what do you do for fun and relaxation?

A. I love to have dinner with my friends, get a massage or go see a movie with my son.

Q. What other projects are you currently working on or about to start?

A. I am currently developing a TV series aimed at getting people fit on the job…stay tuned.

Q. Could you share some of your marketing strategies? Which ones are the most effective in your opinion?

A. Social networking is the way to go. Also you can’t be afraid to ask, friends family and colleagues to spread the word. If you believe in what you have written about its easy to ask.

Q. What would be the top five, (or 3 or 1 or however many) things you would tell aspiring authors?

A. Looking back on published work can be disheartening…lots of I should haves pop up. Don’t be down on yourself for anything you have written. You can always improve on it in your next book!

Q. Sarah, you have a very interesting background. I understand that you are a trained Ballet Dancer and have trained at the Bolshoi Ballet School, Moscow. Could you tell us about your experience as a dancer?

A. I began dancing at 10 years old in Toronto with a professional childrens company. When I was 16 I trained in Russia and went right to Europe to begin my career. I danced classical ballet for many years then moved into musicals . I had a wonderfully lucky career as a dancer and choreograpgher that provided me with a motivation and work ethic that has helped me in every aspect of my life.

Q. What led you to design dance classes for people with Parkinson's Disease?

A. I was working as a personal trainer with a client who was diagnosed with Parkinsons disease and I was researching the best way to get his body moving through exercise. I learned that dance was a good therapy from a company in NYC and I decided that would be my give back to the community by starting a weekly dance class for those with PD. It is a magical class that is the highlight of my week. We now are in our 4^th year operations and have 5 locations in our city.

Q. I am sure my readers would be interested to learn more about your T.V. work in New York and Toronto.

A. I am on air fitness expert for a couple of shows I Toronto and in NYC. I provide segments on every topic to improve our physical health. I always provide exercises that can be done anywhere anytime without going to the gym.

Q. Are the people you work with in keeping fit from all walks of life or mainly business women and men?

A. I train every age and ability. I have some children suffering with obesity and young adults . I train actors, bankers, musician, doctors, ….personal training isn’t just for the wealthy anymore. I think more and more people are realizing that personal traiining can really help them with a clear structure to reaching their goals.

Q. Can you share with our readers one of your most effective/favorite keep fit tips?

A. I try to make everything in my life as active as possible. I walk run or ride my bike wherever I can. I play sports with my son. I make running dates with my girlfriends . I try to incorporate fitness into every aspect of my life so I don’t resent slogging away at the gym!

A. As a financial specialist for over 10 years, I realized that women were not getting the proper information to help reduce poverty in their retirement. I spent thousands of hours building retirement plans for women and decided a book in this format would be the easiest way to inform them without overwhelming them.

Q What draws you to your genre(s)? Why is this type of story compelling to you?

A. This is a story about my life and why I became a financial specialist so it’s not only a true story, but written in a very specific format that makes the book a map of a woman’s life and how not to take the wrong path.

Q. What is your writing process like? Do you map the whole thing out or do you just let it unfold?

A. The 99 Series is about the Top 11 points of any given subject- so we take the top 11 points of retirement, they become the chapters and we write from there.

Welcome to my blog Sue. Thank you for taking the time to answer a few questions about yourself, your career, and books on Zero Stress for Selling.

Q. Sue you have an interesting background in sales and business. Could you tell our readers a little about yourself? What are some of the events that have influenced your life as it is today?

A. I had been in sales for more than 25 years, with the last 9+ years as a sales manager for a Fortune 500 company with 10-14 sales representatives reporting to me. I was extremely busy with work eating up all my time and draining my energy. Unfortunately, this stress was taking its physical and mental toll. With my son in college, it was just me, the pets and my job. I got into the vicious cycle of working 12-hour days and sleeping 10-12 hours a night. Weekends passed as a blur of grocery shopping, laundry, napping and trying to catch up with work. I was stressed out to the max and ready to break apart.

I knew I had to make a change. I already had one stress-induced disorder, fibromyalgia, and I didn't want to get any other illnesses. So I took some time off from work and made some tough decisions to eliminate everything that stressed me out (including several friends). It took a while but I finally started to feel better. And eventually, I experienced a feeling of joy that I had not felt in a very long time.

Q. Please tell us about your book and why you wrote it?

A. It wasn’t until I started training and coaching on how to sell 11 years ago that I realized all the fear and stress that surrounds selling.

I would hear:

· “Sue, I just don’t know how to close”

· “How do I get my prospective client to actually talk to me instead of me doing all the talking?”

· “Sue, how do I sell without being pushy but still make a great living?”

Out of these questions, Zero Stress Selling was born. I specialize in helping women business owners shift gears into relaxed, confident and lucrative sales conversations.

Now, I’m on a mission to help coaches and consultants fill their practices and to learn to enjoy selling without stress or fear.

Part of that mission was to write a book on how to get more clients and fill your practice using online methods of marketing.

Q. What kind of research was involved in writing your book?

A. I started my own online business after leaving corporate America and the book was a natural progression of all that I learned making my company, Zero Stress Selling, successful.

Q. Is there a story you want to tell behind or about your work(s)?

A. I absolutely love helping coaches and consultants find new clients online and then have relaxed and confident client enrollment conversations. By knowing how to close the deal, they will always have a full and thriving practice.

Q. How many books have you written? How many have been published?

A. I have written two books. The other book is “Zero Stress Selling: 7 No-Fail Strategies to Lose Your Stress Now”. It is for any woman who sells. They sell on Amazon.com, both as paperbacks and as Kindle editions.

Q. What is the hardest part of writing for you?

A. There really hasn’t been a hard part. I enjoy the process and finished each book within 3 months’ time.

Q. What is the most positive experience in your writing process?

A. I love the idea that my books can be purchased inexpensively by any coach or consultant that needs help with marketing or with stress and work/life balance.

Q. Do you have a favorite place where you like to write?

A. I’m old-fashioned in that I like to write long-hand on yellow pads and then get my assistant to type the pages to send to my editor. So I enjoy writing curled up on my couch or armchair with my dog, Winnie the Pooh, at my feet.

Q. What other projects are you currently working on or about to start?

A. I’m starting a book on client enrollment strategies for coaches and consultants. I also offer classes and private consulting on how to get more clients and fill your practice.

Q. Could you share some of your marketing strategies? Which ones are the most effective in your opinion?

A. Having a system is very important, whether you do coaching or consulting from your home office or have a professional services business, like a financial planner or a chiropractor.

Offline activities, like speaking, networking and direct mail still work. But you can get more clients if you take your activities online in addition to just offline sales and marketing activities.

Q. What would be the top five, (or 3 or 1 or however many) things you would tell aspiring authors?

A. Just push through and write. Don’t censor yourself – your editor can prune it back. Just keep on writing one page a day or three pages every weekend.

Q. How do you balance the need to have time to write with the needs of family, society, etc.?

A. Work/life balance is so important. I believe you have to figure out your most important values and spend time on the top 3 each and every day. I follow that system myself so that I spend time with my family, creating and writing and relaxing each day.

Q. What do you read for fun when you’re not writing?

A. Murder mysteries! I love Sue Grafton detective fiction the best of all.

Welcome to my blog Ginger. Thank you for taking the time to answer a few questions about yourself, your book, business, marketing, and publishing career.

Congratulations on your book ‘Presentational Skills for the Next Generation’

Q. Tell us about your latest work—title, genre, etc. — and why you wrote it?

A. Presentational Skills for the Next Generation - BUS; MKTG;

Why a book on presentational skills? Why would I want to author it? The answers to these questions are complex but it all boils down to the dire need for an authoritative source of information that addresses the issues of today’s technology.

Much has changed over the years in the public speaking arena. We have so many new and challenging tools at our disposal that we are no longer consigned to countless hours to travel from city to city to share our knowledge.

The Internet has opened the doors to people from all places and races. At the click of a button, you can share your information in many forms of multi-media. With the availability of hosting online conferences and collaborations in both text-only and A/V environments, as are offered by Skype Conference™, Hot Conference™ and desktop sharing applications such as Yugma™, as well as teleconferences, the modes and means are so plentiful that more and more savvy business owners are venturing into the public speaking arena.

Q What draws you to your genre(s)? Why is this type of story compelling to you?

A. Having owned and operated businesses from multi-million dollar surgical facilities to a local bar-b-que has given me over 30 years of knowledge on business and marketing. Sharing that knowledge gives me great joy.

Q. What is your writing process like? Do you map the whole thing out or do you just let it unfold?

A. For me, writing comes naturally. Many relatives on my mother’s side of the family are writers and public speakers, including both my mother and her stepsister, for many generations. Therefore, I would have to say the process for me is likened to the blooming of a rose; unfolding petal-by-petal until it is fully in bloom.

Q. You mention that many of your family members are writers. Did they write fiction or non-fiction?

A. Most all of the writers in my family history wrote, and some still do write, for publication such as magazines, newspapers and journals. Some also wrote historical and historical fiction as my mother has in her books Pioneer Potpourri & Footprints Under the Pines, both of which available at www.DawnCreations.net.

Q. What kind of research was involved in writing your book?

A. Surveys and interviews as well as Internet research are always very helpful in investigating new topics. For this subject I relied on the expertise of a few professionals in both the public speaking and technology arenas.

Q. How do you balance the need to have time to write with the needs of family, society, etc.?

A. As an Aquarian, I have a tendency to want to finish things with no interruption. However, that is really not feasible when writing a book. Therefore, I have to sometimes jot down a basic thought and flush it out later. Sometimes I find myself leaping out of bed in the wee hours to pen an inspiration or thought, so as not to forget. Yes, I’m of that age. *wink*

Q. Have there been any authors in particular, that inspired your writing?

A. While I enjoy reading, as much as writing, I could not pick just one or two from whom I garner inspiration. It seems I favor the classics and mysteries for reading and marketing gurus for my business writing inspiration.

Q. Is there a story you want to tell behind or about your work(s)?

A. While writing this book, I contacted some well-known authors in the field and was pleasantly surprised by their welcoming responses. One such reply was from not just one, but two, PowerPoint® gurus and For Dummy series authors. The takeaway here is don’t count yourself out before you ask.

Q. What other projects are you currently working on or about to start?

A. At this time of year, for the last four years, I have published my Weird & Wacky Holiday Marketing Guide. It is the most fun books that I write. It is a business-marketing calendar of ideas with suggestions & templates surrounding unusual holiday throughout the year. You will find it in PDF format on www.HolidayMarketingGuide.com.

Q. Have you ever wanted to or thought of writing a fictional book? If so, what in genre and what is/was your inspiration?

A. My forte is in business writing. As I am a 30+ year veteran of business ownership, and having owned a mom & pop bar-b-q as well as a multi-million dollar surgical clinic, my vast knowledge of personal & business growth serves as my inspiration. The closest I ever came to fiction was when I wrote a couple of poems. One of which I was told I should submit for publication.

Q Could you share some of your marketing strategies? Which ones are the most effective in your opinion?

A. Of course, the absolute best marketing strategies are found in my Weird & Wacky Holiday Marketing Guide. Other than that, I would have to say it is a matter of keeping at it. Usually, it takes motion to create momentum.

Q. What would be the top five, (or 3 or 1 or however many) things you would tell aspiring authors?

A. As a publisher and author, my suggestion to aspiring authors is to map out your marketing plan before you write your book! Begin promotion prior to your publication date and keep at it for two or three years if you want to see your book reach the masses. You are the one closest to your work, and unless you commit to sharing its availability, it won’t sell. So stay committed and you will be successful.

Q. When you are able to take time away from your business what do you do for fun and relaxation?

A. This may sound trite, but my business is my joy. I have the unique opportunity to help business owners from all walks of life with both their publishing and design needs. Designing marketing and business pieces, as well as book covers and layouts is both rewarding and fulfilling. However, I do enjoy pencil drawing, which means time out-of-doors for inspiration, and crafts in my free time. I have sold some of my artwork on CafePress at http://www.cafepress.com/documeant. The crafts I enjoy are macramé (yes, I know this dates me, *wink*), cross-stitch, crochet and knitting. Last but not least, singing and playing the piano have been a part of my repertoire of fun and relaxing things to do since the tender age of four.

Congratulations on your book ‘So He Cheated, Now What?

Q. Tell us about your latest work—title, genre, etc. — and why you wrote it?

A. So He Cheated, Now What? is my personal testimony of overcoming an affair in my marriage. After being married for 8 years and just after having our 3^rd child my husband had an affair. An affair that produced a child.

Throughout the process I went through so many emotions, pain and grief.

I blamed myself, was depressed and basically suffered in silence. I went through a battle within myself. I felt helpless and alone. My husband and reconciled and decided to rebuild our marriage. In the midst of the pain I found myself and my purpose. My purpose is to help others that are suffering in silence. I wrote the book so other women don’t feel alone. Infidelity occurs every day. Contrary to what many believe, a large number of women (and men) stay. The book helps couples rebuild after an affair. It also navigates the women through the rebuilding phase.

Q What draws you to your genre(s)? Why is this type of story compelling to you?

A. It’s my personal story. I am a strong believer in sharing our personal testimony with others. We don’t go through trials and tribulations for ourself. We go through so that we can help someone else. People need to know they are not alone. I want them to know that they too, can make it. After the tears, after the pain and shame - They can live again, laugh again - Breathe Again!

Q. What is your writing process like? Do you map the whole thing out or do you just let it unfold?

A. Initially I just wrote. Putting my feelings and thoughts on paper was my personal therapy sessions. (And it was free) Each time I share my story a part of me is healed. After writing I then went back and created an outline, chapters, table of contents etc…

Q. What kind of research was involved?

A. Non- Fiction

Q. How much of YOU makes it into your characters?

A. It’s all me in this book.

My second book, “It’s Not My Fault” is a work of fiction inspired by people and situations I see each and every day.

Q. How do you balance the need to have time to write with the needs of family, society, etc.?

A. This is tough. I am a wife, mother, volunteer, minister, author, business Owner and encourager. I have to steal time to write. I try and get it in where it fits in. Weekends and evening are the only good time I have to write. I have taken a day or two off and locked myself away in my office, turned on my classical music and just wrote.

Q. Have there been any authors in particular, that inspired your writing?

A. There are so many authors that inspire me. Iyanla Vanzant, Vanessa Miller, Joyce Meyer and Stacey Hawkins Adams are a few that come to mind.

Q. Is there a story you want to tell behind or about your work(s)?

A. I write with a purpose in mind. Each time I write it is to encourage motivate or inspire someone. People often say there is a message in the music, but I say there is always a message in my writing. My goal is for the reader to say, “If she made it, I can too.”

Q. What other projects are you currently working on or about to start?

A. In 2006 I founded Breathe Again Magazine Online to help encourage, inspire and motivate women (and men) that have overcome adversity. So many people feel alone in their struggle or their storm. The stories on www.breatheagainmagazine.org identify with all types of people. We may be different but we all have one thing in common. Pain! We hurt the same. A broken heart is a broken heart. It doesn’t matter if you work in Hollywood or at Hardees. In addition to the magazine, we are reaching people all over the world via internet radio. Every Thursday, I am the host of Breathe Again Magazine - the Radio Show. http://www.blogtalkradio.com/breatheagainmagazine Where we interview guests that have gone from victim to VICTORIOUS.

Q. Nicole, please could you tell our readers more about your speaking engagements.

A. I speak to inspire and encourage my attendees. I share my testimony, provide motivational speeches, conduct workshops, speak at churches, marriage conferences and women gatherings. My husband and I conduct tele-seminars and on site workshops titled, “Why Should I Stay?“ specifically for couples. I thoroughly enjoy speaking. I am on a mission to make a difference and I am doing that each and everyday. I made it and I want other women that they too, can make it!

Q Could you share some of your marketing strategies? Which ones are the most effective in your opinion?

A. Social Media- Facebook, Twitter and You Tube. enewsletter, book signings, radio shows, article writings, speaking engagements. My most effective avenue of marketing is social media and speaking engagements. In order to be effective you must be consistent and provide useful content. Don’t sell - tell.

Q. What would be the top five, (or 3 or 1 or however many) things you would tell aspiring authors?

A. 1. Don’t Give Up - Keep moving forward. As long as you are moving, keep going. It may seem like it’s not paying off but just stay at it. Focus on just 2 or 3 marketing avenues. When you try to do it all, you just get lost.

2. Repurpose your content. If you are speaking, tape it and show clips. Take photos.

3. Ask for testimonials.

Q. What do you do for fun when not writing, at speaking engagements, hosting your radio show, and all the working aspects of your life?

A. For fun I enjoy spending time with my family. We laugh a lot. I also enjoy acting- being involved in skits and short plays allows be to someone else for a short period of time. I love the arts and theater. ( that was my first love growing up ) But my secret pass time is yard sales ,consignment shops and thrift stores. Love, Love, Love this! I am just thrilled when I find something for $2 and I should have paid $50 for it. I come home and share my “great” find and unfortunately, no one in my home shares my enthusiasm.. ( lol ) They just look at me like I’m crazy. But that’s okay, because this is one thing I have all to myself!!

Husbands May Come and Go But Friends are Forever - Optioned for Big Screen

Welcome to my blog Judith. Thank you for taking the time to answer a few questions about yourself, your writing career, and your books. Congratulations on your book ‘Husbands May Come and Go but Friends are Forever’, which I understand has been optioned for the Big Screen. Congratulations on winning the Jack London Prize from the California Writers Club.

Q. Judith you have an interesting background. Could you tell our readers a little about yourself? What are some of the events that have influenced your life as it is today?

A. A major influence in my life was being the only child of warring parents, thrown together out of need rather than love. Consequently, I spent most of my childhood escaping to the movies. Slumped down in the dark, munching on Jujube’s and Milk Duds, my worries would rise up and dissolve in the light of the projector. I pictured myself as Deborah Kerr in “An Affair to Remember,” and Jennifer Jones in “Love is a Many Splendored Thing.” Learning to use my imagination at a young age has served me well as an author.

Q. Judith can you please tell us about your book and why you chose to write about this subject?

A. My novel is about a group of women in their late 50s who first met in high school in the 1950s. Their enduring friendship has carried them through multiple marriages, dramatic divorces and even maddening menopause. Yet, they still have secrets from each other.

I chose my subject because I was sick of reading fluffy chicklit. I wanted to write a story about mature women with real problems. I think I succeeded because the book caught the attention of a Hollywood producer and has been optioned for the big screen.

Q. Have there been any Authors in particular, that inspired the writing of this book?

A. In 1997, a friend of mine sent me a copy of “The Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood.” When I’d finished reading the book, I slammed it shut and said, “That bitch wrote my book.” (can a say that?) Anyway, at that moment I decided to quit my job as an HR executive and write while I still had a few brain cells left.

Q. What is the hardest part of writing for you?

A. Revision is the hardest for me. Reading a draft with an objective eye is difficult. I also hate deleting some of my favorite scenes, paragraphs, or words because they don’t move the story forward.

Q. What is the most positive experience in your writing process?

A. I love finding the exact word or phrase that communicates perfectly what I’m trying to say. But what I love best is typing “The End.”

Q. What other projects are you currently working on or about to start?

A. After the second revision of “Husbands,” I put it away for a while and wrote a second novel entitled, “Staying Afloat,” the story of a devoted stay-at-home wife and mother who morphs into a sex-starved adulteress. The book has been professionally edited and is ready to go, but I don’t plan to send it out into the world until my option for “Husbands” is exercised.

Q. Could you share some of your marketing strategies? Which ones are the most effective in your opinion?

A. One strategy that has worked for me is putting on author panels at local libraries, where three or four authors talk about their writing process and sell their books. I’ve also found guest posting on other sites, not necessarily related to writing, to be effective. I think it’s important to connect with people in a variety of ways. For instance, I’m a former professional model and I have maintained my interest in fashion over the years. I now write a regular column in my local newspaper entitled “FashionOverFifty,” where my byline mentions my book -- a soft-sell approach.

Q. Any words of encouragement for unpublished writers?

A. Believe in yourself and your work. Don’t give up. Success as a writer requires passion, persistence and patience.

Q. What do you read for fun when you’re not writing?

A. I like to read a variety of genres. I just started “Unbroken,” by Laura Hillenbrand.

We’re glad to have you participating in the virtual tour for Unfinished by Suzanne Gravelle. Suzanne has an interesting story about how she tackled a major crisis in her life. Many people have said they would like to pack it all in and hit the road. Suzanne actually did that – she sold her house, left her job, packed her bags and hit the road. Now she wants to share what prompted her to do this and how its working out so far. She’s working on the sequel to Unfinished, which is aptly called Finished.

Welcome to my blog Suzanne. Thank you for taking the time to answer a few questions about your life and your writing. Congratulations on the publication of your book ‘Unfinished’.

I have not read your book but would like you to give my readers and I a little peek into ‘Unfinished’ and what inspired to write this book.

Q. Suzanne, I understand that you have given up everything in your life. Please tell my readers and I what led to this major change your life?

A. It all started two years prior (2007) to my youngest child graduating high school (2009) and I was standing looking at the wood siding on my home. Parts of it were twisting and the closer I looked the more I realized, that soon the whole outside of the house was in need repair and re-staining. It overwhelmed me. Then I got a pen and paper and started to list all the repairs that were looming on this giant house and I no longer wanted to be the one to take care of these things, which was my first indication that I was changing, because in the past I enjoyed almost every aspect of maintaining my home, gardens and property. Then I started thinking about the changes that were going to happen for me, that had no choice but to happen. I got excited about the freedom thoughts I suddenly found myself thinking but these thoughts soon escalated to, "What if I had no home at all? What if I just drove away from everything for a while to think about what it is I really want for my life now that I am done the 30 years of raising children and looking after everything and everyone?" I suddenly saw myself free from property tax, grass to cut, power bills, gardens to maintain etc. Then, once I got this vision in my mind, I could not change it. It became a feeling and I formed an emotional attachment to having no responsibility for what I thought would be a short period of time. I thought, "After my home sells I will go on a short journey, maybe a month or two, take some time off from my career, reflect on my own life and what I want for myself, then go back home, buy a smaller home and resume the conventional life. What I did not count on or know was going to happen, is a stranger walking into my life and the heartbreak that came with this man that ripped my strong, safe world, my vision, and my plans apart. It sent me into the deepest darkest time of my life, and I am fifty! How could that be? It surprisingly consumed my body, mind and soul which I could not stand anyone seeing, especially my children and it propelled me into embarking upon this "Self Imposed Exile," (Chapter one of Unfinished,) this incredible journey of self exploration to heal from this heartache, which in hindsight I can now say was only the catalyst for me to really be able to be alone and find out who I am and who I am supposed to be... (Sounds so cliché.) It is now 18 months later and over 60,000 kilometers, (40,000 miles) and I am still driving. I still have no desire to go back to conventional living, I am not sure I want to stop, or know how to anymore.

Q. What was the most difficult part of your life before to leave behind?

A. If I am reading this properly, the most difficult part to leave behind was the safety net of having a home to retreat into. I do not include my children or grandchildren; they were and are the most difficult parts of being alone. I miss them every day. But I know when I go back I will be the strong woman they know once again.

Q. Has your experience as a single parent been part of your motivation to change?

A. Absolutely! I was exhausted and did not even realize how exhausted I was. There was never any time to dwell on my own life, until my youngest child started gaining independence then I was able to stand back and ask my self...what do I want for me?... in an unselfish way.

Q. What part of these changes made you want to spend so much time on the road?

A. I could not stand being around people in the frame of mind I was in. It was embarrassing to me to suddenly be so consumed by unknown fears and pain and being unable to shake it.

Q. Did you have a career that you left behind also?

A. Yes I did. I was a Realtor and I enjoyed my career. I thought I would be helping people in this way for the rest of my life.

Q. What did your children and grandchildren say when you told them of your decision?

A. They were shocked at first, apprehensive about their own lives and wondered how they were going to be without me around. They were concerned about me being alone going to so many places alone. It actually became a test for them and for me, to ensure they can take care of themselves without me. What if I died? It is not the same but kind of is...I am not there physically day to day to help them make decisions. They have grown so quickly to understand they are so capable. They have passed this test with flying colors, I am so proud of them.

Q. Have you seen your children and grandchildren since you’ve been travelling? If not, how difficult has that part of your life been?

A. I did not see my children or grandchildren for 13 months. It was so incredibly lonesome I wanted to fly home many times. But I knew once I got there I would just want to leave again so I could not go until I was ready and even when I did go, this past summer I was not ready hence why I left again. Plus they have their own lives, work and friends. We keep in such close contact via cell phone, text and Skype that anytime they need me or I need them we get on these devices and it helps a lot.

Q. Please tell us why you wrote a book about your experience?

A. It became apparent to me while speaking with friends, family and strangers that I am doing something so many people only dream about. Plus I am experiencing so many emotions that we all experience and it appears that people are curious about other people’s pain and how they deal with it. After all it makes no difference what has caused our pain, it is our pain and it feels as if no one else could be hurting as much as we are and it helps to read that others suffer too and we can heal, to some degree, or at least learn how to live with the pain that is invisible.

Q. Has the writing of you book ‘Unfinished’ helped in your healing?

A. Yes and No. Writing Unfinished has kept me in the place of despair. It continues to remind me of all the moments in my life that hurt. At the same time it has helped me to work through the confusion of why my life that appeared to anyone looking in, to be so full, why I no longer desired to live the same way anymore and why it suddenly fell apart.

Q. Have there been any Authors in particular that have influenced your writing?

A. Not really. I like detective novels, Agatha Christie was my first influence when I was 10. My daughter and I pass books back and forth and the book club I belonged to in Halifax would open me up to many different authors and styles of writing.

Q. What is the most positive experience in your writing process?

A. That I can share with others that anything you truly desire to have happen for you....can!

Q. As you have been travelling so much have you been able to find a special place where you like to write?

A. I have been blessed to be able to stop at friends and families homes along this journey. And I find corners of their homes to sit and write. They tend to forget I am there, in the nooks I create for myself. I write where ever I am that I get comfortable with. As I do not sit still very well or stay one place for very long I have learned to blend in quickly to get in the zone to write. It was easy to get in the zone to write Unfinished as it was therapy to sit, write, consume myself with my feelings and put it on paper. It would keep my mind and hands occupied at the same time have people around when I needed to be social, which I did not want to do for over a year. One of the strangest places I wrote was last winter in Calgary when I was offered a condo in Calgary that was going to be unoccupied for 100 days, but my friends and family thought I would continue to lose my mind if I went there because it belonged to the object of my affection who broke my heart. But I knew that I needed to go there, surround myself with his stuff to be able to write and heal at the same time. I admit it was a risk and very weird but it worked. I was able to feel the feelings to be able to be raw in my writing and it surrounded me with enough of him without him being there to allow me to heal in my own way. I hope this makes sense.

Q. Where do you stay when on the road?

A. A I answered in my last question, I have been blessed to have many friends and family all across the country but often I do not want to stay with anyone so I drive to a town that I like the name of, find a motel and curl up for a few days until I felt rested enough or strong enough to drive some more. If I stay with friends and family I very quickly get a feel for how long I can stay and when it is time to go. Over the past 18 months I have been writing in quiet corners and become part of the furniture. I know that I am ok doing this because when it comes time for me to leave it has been my decision and we cry when I leave.

Q. How do you deal with the extreme weather in your travels?

A. The weather is always a factor in Canada. Summers are short and winters are long, cold and brutal. I just drove through the Prairies and it was violent hurricane winds, blowing semi tractor trailers and cars off the road. Blowing snow, white out conditions for days! I thought I would eventually drive out of it but it took 3 days of 11 hours each because I had to go so slow. I just trust myself, my truck and I make sure I have enough supplies in my truck should I get stuck somewhere for a few days. I am not afraid of weather. Living on the East Coast of Canada prepares us for most everything mother nature can fling at me.

Q. What other projects are you currently working on or about to start?

A. When I first fell to the floor with my own despair, I picked up a file that had a story I had written for my children in 1996 titled "The Lippy Cats." I came across it one afternoon after I asked the Universe to bring me something to keep my mind and hands occupied until my home sold because at this point I was unable to leave my home to do anything except get groceries which I really had to work myself up to let alone leave the house to go to work, that is how far on the floor I was, I was a puddle. I started to write more adventures of The Lippy Cats and then started researching publishers for children's books. When I contacted my current publisher he told me he does not publish children's books but he suggested I write about the personal journey I am on. Writing my children's books 8 out of 52 of them are written and ready for editing, is all I want to do and I will do that when I get these books done.

B. I am currently working on my second book aptly titled...Finished which will be released in March 2012. I would like to think I am finished with "that" part of my life. It is not just about me and my sorrows, it is about people who have shared their lives and stories with me and stories of people who are a part of my life and how their pains and grief have changed them. Unfortunately I could write about other people pains for ever...the stories are endless. So much sadness and grief but I am happy to say they do provide me with some happy endings. I have started to see a third book happening as I am not finished my journey and I will not be until I get back home....whenever that is.

Q. What kind of activities are funfor you when not writing and travelling?

A. Fun? Well fun has not been a part of me for so long but laughter is slowing starting to come out of me naturally again. While traveling I turn left when most people say to turn right, I want to explore the unknown. When I had a conventional life and a home I took part in many activities. I like to swim and dive and my dive gear (except tanks) travel everywhere with me, I love music and would like to be able to play the guitar and piano better than I do and I will get better. I read almost every day, crossword puzzles, and board games with friends and family. Friendly competition in almost any sport.

Q. Suzanne, can you please give some words of encouragement to women who are experiencing similar feelings as you?

A. Oh my god could I? Yes! Please, please understand whatever it is you are experiencing, if you truly do not want to feel this way anymore or go through whatever it is you're going through day after day, it is important to visualize the life you see for self in a very clear way. Put a picture to the life you desire...add a lot of very precise detail, I say this because I got tired of my vision showing up with missing parts. Write it down, cut out pictures in magazines, paste them up where you will see them often, of where you want to live, the people you want in your life, the places you see yourself going. I cannot express strongly enough how constantly seeing and reinforcement of your goal will eventually get you to exactly where you never thought you would or could get. The goals and dreams I have for myself....I write about in the chapter titled Manifestation in Unfinished because we do have the ability to manifest the life we "truly" desire. More importantly it is the removal of what we do not want. Increase the good to great and remove the bad to no more!

NCW (Malta) stands for National Council of Women of Malta. I discovered this group purely by accident. I subscribe to my local councils email of local events. These emails arrive regularly. Some of interest, a few are in the Maltese language, most are in English. I tend to delete a lot of them but this particular email caught my attention. Bice Mizzi-Vassallo Music Competition 13th Edition. In summary, the email told of the music finals and awards to be held in Valletta. Free for the public to attend. Being a lover of the Classical music, in particular the piano, I decided to attend.
The competition was held in the beautiful setting of St. James Cavalier, Centre of Creativity, Music Room and was well attended. Perhaps there were many relatives and friends of the contestants, but no matter, the music 'room', more like a small theater was full. The four official Adjudicators were not obviously visible to us public attendees. And maybe not to the musicians.
Not knowing what to expect, I was delighted and awe struck by the abilities of all eight participants. This was no amateur musical competition. These musicians played and presented themselves as professionals! How could the Adjudicators possibly choose only three for awards? They all deserved awards! They all have my vote!
I will surely try and keep track of the NCW, the young musicians, and of course my source of many interesting snippets of information, my local council.
You never know what you may find around the next corner. Only in Malta!

Where did the time go? I cannot believe that has been almost two years since my last post. What have I been doing? Trying to leave Central America.
Two trips to Malta and much research has finally brought us to this beautiful little island in the middle of the Mediterranean. The picture is typical, one of the many churches in the towns and villages. Full of history and a unique culture, Malta has many little secrets and surprises. You never know what delights you may find just around the corner.

Interview with Marilyn Celeste Morris

Welcome to Marilyn!

Marilyn, could you tell our readers a little about yourself. What are some of the events that have influenced your life as it is today?

I’m an army brat, raised all over the world. I wrote about my life as a brat accompanying my army officer father to places like Seoul, Korea in 1946 (I was 8 years old and got my very own orders from The War Department) and Austria, and back to the States at various posts from 1938 to 1958, when he (we!) retired. So those early years greatly influenced my life, giving me an appreciation of being an American and an understanding of how other people live. I think I developed empathy for others and an interest in what motivates them.

Please would you tell our readers what was the inspiration that led you to write “Forces of Nature”?

I was shopping at a popular local mall one day when I heard the rumble of yet another Air Force jet taking off from the nearby runway. The thought crossed my mind that it would be unthinkable for such a plane to crash into the mall, but on the way home, I heard on the car radio that the area was to expect a severe thunderstorm with tornadoes. So the idea was born. I worked as a temp in the National Weather Service offices and as an assistant to the manager at a local mall, so I took what little I knew about those areas and incorporated them into the story. Also, Howard, the Weatherman, who has dreams of tornadoes the night before they happen, was a characteristic I developed as a teenager in Oklahoma, so I incorporated that ability into his weather forecasting.

Was your life as an ‘Army Brat’ part of the inspiration, as there is
an Air Force bomber that is a big part of the story?

I really wasn’t exposed to many airplanes as a kid, unless you count the flight overseas from Massachusetts to Germany. So, no, I suppose the KC135 tanker came from my imagination and proximity to the nearby AF base.

What makes this book special to you?

Interesting question. Maybe it’s the juxtaposition of the fury of Mother Nature and human nature that makes the book more interesting to me. I think we’ve all felt powerless in the midst of any natural disaster, and we’ve all met people who are like those portrayed in the book. And we like to think that justice triumphs in the end.

Do you write a plot or outline before you start your writing?

It’s not a real outline; I think outlines should be outlawed! I do have a plot kind of sketched out, as to who, what happens, what are the backgrounds of each character, and how do they all tie in together? My books go through countless revisions as I add plot lines or dialogue and background, and the original ending was one I wasn’t happy with, so I re-wrote it. It had been all nicely tied up, but I wanted to let my readers know life isn’t like that, and sometimes lives don’t turn out the way we think they should.

Have there been any Authors in particular, that inspired the writing of this story?

I like so many authors, I couldn’t say. I will say that the old movie, The Towering Inferno, about a high-rise office building, kind of rattled around in my head during the writing of this book.

How did you choose the cover for the book?

My publisher, Vanilla Heart Publishing, offered me four proposed covers from which to choose. Tone was an aerial view of a building left shattered, with a sign hanging drunkenly off the side, in dull, muted colors; another of a whirling, dark tornado funnel, and two were of fiery red skies implying an inferno rather than a natural weather event. Besides, the colors were vivid and eye-catching, something I’ve learned sell better at book signings. So I told her which one I preferred and it was a “Go.”

Could you talk about some of the most positive experiences you’ve had while writing “Forces of Nature”?

Maybe it’s thinking about my characters and how each reacts to life’s events. I think they may have forced me to re-examine some of my beliefs and behaviors and affirmed my faith in a higher power.

How about the negative ones?

Sometimes my characters did not behave in the manner I thought they should. But that’s what makes them interesting, don’t you think? Just about the time you think you know somebody really well, up pops something completely unexpected. And sometimes I even surprise myself.

Have there been any stumbling blocks in your writing of this book?

Not really. I had thought at one time about getting with the Public Information Office at the AF Base and ask for permission to interview a KC135 tanker, but decided the red tape involved would be too lengthy. If I were writing more of a documentary, of course I would have insisted on accuracy and detail, but since this is a fictional story, I knew I could take great liberties with the statistics and probabilities (Would an AF plane REALLY take off in the middle of a severe thunderstorm? Probably not, but in my story, it did, so there!)

What other projects are you currently working on?

I’m working on a sequel to Sabbath’s Room, titled Sabbath’s House, where the magical black cat moves from the isolated farmhouse to a huge Victorian house in town, and you would think all would be well after finding bodies in the cellar of the former residence. Not so…And there will be a historical romance, The Unexplored Heart, and an untitled vampire book. Also toying with a novel titled Fireflies in a Jar, about girls growing up in a small town in the mid-fifties. And, oh, yes, a sequel to The Women of Camp Sobingo, called That Cavanaugh Woman. The world is not yet done with Trudy Cavanaugh, the wealthy and powerful former army wife who lived her young married years in a remote military compound with her husband and who returned to the states with a physically and emotionally crippled spouse and who is then appointed by her father-in-law as heir to the publishing empire.

Of the books that you have written, which is you favorite?

I love The Women of Camp Sobingo. The four women were so diverse, three of them so strong, and one who carried so many demons in her soul that she chose death in that remote country. Their backgrounds, their childhoods, formed their characters to either cope or crumble under the enormous pressures of their lives. How was Maggie from Chicago different from Nell Martin from West Texas? Why did the beautiful yet fragile Leah Damon think so little of herself even though she had been a famous model? And how did the shy Trudy Cavanaugh gain the favor of her husband’s father and battle a family scandal?

Which was the hardest to write?

Even though I used pages from my personal journals in writing my book about lupus, Diagnosis: Lupus: The Intimate Journal of a Lupus Patient, I hesitated to reveal my “bad” inner self where I cursed God, felt suicidal at times, fell into a slobbering self-pity, and in general was probably pretty unlikeable, but I realized I was expressing only honest human emotions and that this book may help others to realize they aren’t alone in their emotional upheavals. And there is a light at the end of the tunnel, acceptance and even serenity amid the wreckage of this disease or any other chronic illness, such as cancer or MS. So this book was harder to put into print.

Do you write to make money or for the love of writing?

I’m laughing at the money part. I think the last royalty check I got bought me a Happy Meal at McDonald’s. So I’m definitely not writing for the money! I think it’s the satisfaction of doing what I always dreamed of doing. And when my 9-year-old granddaughter was at my house and picked up my latest book and read the back cover with my picture on it. She looked at me, eyes wide, and asked in awe: “Grandma! Are you famous?” You can’t get any kind of money for that!

Could you share some of your ways of marketing you book?

I’m just learning to market. And I hate it. The time I spend in marketing my books takes away from writing, and that makes me cranky. But market I must. I’ve been on talk radio, on television (local cable) and given speeches at civic and church groups. I I’ve had book signings and attended writer’s conferences where I’ve sold my books. I blog, I’m trying to learn to Tweet and am posting on Face book and My Space. I troll the Internet looking for markets (free, of course) where I can post my books, and since I have six of them at the moment, that’s time-consuming. And exhausting.
But I can’t give up, and maybe it will pay off in the long run. I subscribe to Google Alerts where they send me lists of anytime one of my books or my name is mentioned in press or blogs, and I’m always surprised when I see some blogger has one of my books listed as having read it. I always write and thank them and ask if they would give me a review. I have no idea how they found my book(s) but I’m thrilled they did.
I think that’s one reason I love to write. Somebody, somewhere, is reading one of my stories.
And I love it.
