Next week the Booked. crew heads back to Southern Indiana (not literally) as we bring you our review of Frank Bill’s second book/first novel Donnybrook. To give you an idea of what you’re in for, here’s an approximation of the definition of a Donnybrook that is given at the beginning of the book. It’s a reference to what happened at the Donnybrook Fair in Ireland, like a long time ago. Attribution follows:

Walter Bagehot’s The English Constitution of 1867, gives a flavour: “The only principle recognised … was akin to that recommended to the traditionary Irishman on his visit to Donnybrook Fair, ‘Wherever you see a head, hit it’.” The usual weapon was a stick of oak or blackthorn that Irishmen often called a shillelagh (a word which derives from the town of that name in County Wicklow). The legend was that visitors to Donnybrook fair would rather fight than eat.”

137 – ManArchy Reading in Boston Part 2

Booked brings you the second half of ManArchy Magazine’s reading featuring Perfect Edge Books and Lazy Fascist Press. The reading was an off-program event at the International Poster Gallery during AWP in Boston. Pela Via and ManArchy Magazine brought together a cadre of authors literally from all over the globe for this reading.

The second half of the reading kicks off with some Stranger Will bonus content with Caleb J Ross on stage, followed with a surprise reader Brian Allen Carr, and the evening wraps up with Perfect Edge Books head-fella Phil Jourdan reading from his new release What Precision, Such Restraint, which was only very briefly interrupted by Monica Drake, who arrived more than halfway through the final reader, and weirdly announced her arrival as she came in the door.

Phil Jourdan brings the night to a close with a story about a bulimic who vomits valuables, from his new book What Precision, Such Restraint.
My book Praise of Motherhood was released in 2012 by Zero Books. A collection of experimental stories will be out in a few months, too. Since 2011, when I first made contact with Zero Books, I’ve been steadily getting much more involved in the functioning of the press and I now co-run it with its founder. My long essay on the infamous creative writing teacher and novelist, John Gardner, will be out through Punctum Books any day now.I run a weird music project called Paris and the Hiltons. I go from genre to genre with different musicians. A number of our releases are musical responses to works of literary modernism.

Ben Loory started the evening with a story that Cameron Pierce requested about the President James Polk.
Ben Loory is an American short fiction writer based in Los Angeles. His first book, a collection entitled Stories for Nighttime and Some for the Day, was published by Penguin Books.

Following the most presidential of stories is Michael Paul Gonzalez, reading from a little something he’s working on.
Michael Paul Gonzalez is an author living in Los Angeles. He takes photos of things and writes about other things. His first novel, Angel Falls, will be released on March 16, 2013 by Perfect Edge Books.

Bringing a simple, funny piece of work into the mix is Kirsten Alene, with a story about giraffes.
Kirsten Alene lives in Portland, Oregon with her husband, Cameron Pierce, a dog named Tristan and a cat named Hoeru. She is the author of Unicorn Battle Squad (2012), the novella, Love in the Time of Dinosaurs (2010), Chiaroscuro (2009), a poetry chapbook, and several stories and poems currently circulating the worldwide web.

Kinda like a celebrity who agrees to take a picture with a fan that’s been waiting out in the rain for hours. I suspect.

That’s all, really. It’s Wendig Month, bitches! Just take it in, let it wash over you. Soak in it!

Oh yeah, and during the episode, we draw some disturbing parallels between Chuck and Booked. favorite Joshua Alan Doetsch. At one point, we weren’t fully aware whom we were speaking with. Thinking there was some sort of astral projection going on… or a situation like those ’80s movies where Fred Savage and Judge Reinhold switch bodies. You know what I’m talking about? I don’t.

I say somewhat unprecedented because we have reviewed a book and its sequel in the past. Just not one right after the other. But we enjoyed Blackbirds so much that we couldn’t resist taking a chance with Mockingbird right away.

After the review, we talk about the recent news that Chuck Palahniuk has announced his next three releases: Fight Club 2 – Even Fightier, Fight Club 3 – Beach Fightin’, and Fight Club 4 – Fight to the Finish. Which is also the title to the fourth Bring It On movie. Just saying.

Oh, and Skip Papersly is back with a new Booked. News that talks about homophobia and New Jersey hair bands.

Booked reviews I Saw Zombies Eating Santa Claus by SG Browne. On his birthday! Booked alum Scott Browne penned a follow-up to his novel Breathers, which is this Xmas themed novella about a zombie, a little girl, and the power of belief. I can say with certainty that this is the first book I’ve ever read that both contains the consumption of human jerky and that I cried while reading. It’s a great book all around, and Livius and I unanimously agreed to that point.

Whatever the reason, we like to throw a few interviews together into one epic episode sometimes, and that’s what we did this week!

Kicking things off is our chat with Fred Venturini. Fred is the author of the novel The Samaritan, and has published short stories in a bunch of places, including the Noir at the Bar 2 anthology. Fred was nice enough to come on and spend a half hour-ish talking about his book, and what’s on the horizon. It was excellent fun and we’re excited to share it with you!

Following Venturini, Janden Daniel Hale (aka Dan Donche) came on to talk about his Everwind series, his TV webseries Proxy IX (Proxy Influence), an exciting new project he has on the horizon with another jack of all trades Phil Jourdan, and his airport shenanigans with Stephen Baldwin.

Back on November 3rd, Livius and Robb drove from Chicago all the way to the Louisville KY area for a night of high-octane, high-volume (and in some cases, probably just high) stories from the Jed Ayres and Frank Bill camps in celebration of the recent release of the Noir at the Bar 2 anthology.

The night hosted eight total readers, over two hours total of reading. Because we’re not so sadistic, we decided to break up the reading into three episodes. the old 3/3/2.

David James Keaton kicks off this episode reading his story Burning Down Djs, a story that appears in much greater detail (as is usually the case with iterations of DJK stories) in his forthcoming collection of stories Fish Bites Cop. It’s all about revenge, fire, tazers, and evolution? You’ll get it when you hear it. DJK is the author of Zee Bee & Bee, and has appeared nearly everywhere it’s possible to submit a story, as he is very prolific. He’s also the creator guy at Flywheel Magazine. CJ Edwards had the dubious honor of following David James Keaton. Fitting, as his day job is busting bad guys. Edwards too has been published everywhere good crime fic can be found – including Uncle B’s Drive-In Fiction alongside his crowd warmer Dave Keaton. CJ read his story Letting Go, a very gripping tale of an emergency call gone very bad.

The gracious host of the evening Frank Bill steps up to the mic to start off this episode, reading What Once Was, an excerpt from the follow-up to his upcoming book Donnybrook. Yeah, he’s already bringing us stuff that’s following up stuff that hasn’t been released yet. He’s like Marty McFly or something. After Frank, Lou Perry took the mic, confessed to having never read before, and proceeded to tell us what’s awesome and what sucks. It’s all about trucks, mud, milk jugs full of beer, and drunken fornication. What more could you really hope for in a story at a reading called Noir at the Bar?

In a warping of time, we move the final reader of the night, Kirby Gann, to the third in this episode. Kirby is the author of Ghosting, the book that he read an excerpt from at this reading. He also authored Our Napoleon in Rags and The Barbarian Parade.

The event kicks off with the night’s emcee and first reader Jedidiah Ayres getting things started and reading from his story The Whole Buffalo, which appears in his short story collection F*ckload of Shorts, and originally appeared in Needle.

Following Jed, Carrie Gaffney steps up, reading her non-fiction piece When I Knew I Sucked At Writing Noir. Carrie is from the Indianapolis group Second Story, which is an organization that helps youth in the Indianapolis area “form positive attitudes about creative writing and improve their skills as writers.” She may also mention Booked. alum Richard Thomas during her reading.

Wrapping up this episode is Matthew McBride, author of Frank Sinatra in a Blender. For the reading, McBride chose to read his story The Tar Hole from Noir at the Bar vol. 2. This story was one of my favorites when we reviewed the anthology earlier on, and we were both very happy that Matt chose to read it that night. His quiet, somber tone really brought home the feel of the story.

For anybody curious, here is how Jed tracked the readers for the night. Really made washing his hands in the bathroom a little awkward…

Booked reviews The Last Final Girl by Stephen Graham Jones. October sees first blood with this fresh take on classic horror. Jones brings the same energy that we fell in love with when we reviewed Zombie Bake-Off not so long ago. It’s part movie fan nerd-out, part slasher story, and part film history. And a serial killer being force fed frozen burritos. It won’t disappoint!

One thing we didn’t mention on the episode that requires attention: Jones’ acknowledgement of his wife was so sweet and touching. It was a wonderful sentiment.

Beyond that, we mentioned a cool book bundle, Robb goes to the movies, and Skip Papersly brings the latest of Booked. News. Stuff us in your ears!

Booked. brings you the Noir At The Bar Sessions. What’s that, you ask? It all started back with the Warmed and Bound Sessions last July. Liv & Robb interviewed seventeen authors in seventeen days leading up to the release of the Warmed any Bound anthology.

This time, instead of seventeen, we chose a much more reasonable three interviews. We can’t wait for you to hear them!

Some bits snipped from Jed Ayres’ Foreward to Noir at the Bar Two:
“But I don’t even write crime stories,” one author objected, when I asked him to come read at one of our events. To which, I replied, “But you write stories about failure and there’s nothing more noir than failure. Plus, you’re funny as cancer puppies, we’d love to have you.”
So, I don’t wanna hear it.

The first Noir at the Bar anthology featured a broad range of noir flavors. Our authors busted the seams of genre in a dozen dif- ferent directions, and with this, the second schizo vision of crime fiction for now, we may have actually broken noir.

Come on by. Pick up a round. Buy a book. Support scrappy writers and independent bookstores. Tip your bartender and kindly shut the fuck up while I’m talking. This is Noir at the Bar.

We have gone over a hundred episodes without reading a book that is arguably by the man who is arguably the biggest name in books, and we thought it was about time to put our money where our James Patterson-hating mouths are. When they announced Zoo – a book that’s not another in an existing series, but it’s own stand-alone book, we hesitantly jumped at the chance to read and review it.

Ugh. While we did our best to remain as objective and positive as possible, this book made it so hard to be nice to it! You’ll have to listen to hear more about it, but trust me, it wasn’t good. The review is good, the book? Not so much.

Booked interviews Swallowing A Donkey’s Eye author Paul Tremblay! We did our review of his book a few episodes back, and he was nice enough to agree to come on and validate Robb’s love of Kurt Vonnegut, confirm our suspicions about “The Poop List”, and scoop us on what he’s up to these days.Paul also schooled us on the pronunciation of the publisher ChiZine. We have been saying “shy-zeen” forever. Apparently, it’s “cheezeen”. Who knew? We do. Now.

Oh, and I’d hate to forget to mention these couple other important facts about this episode: Booked. News does in fact kick off the episode. Because Skip sends us information that is timely, we couldn’t really put off airing it, but at the same time, we didn’t want to throw it right in the middle. So there you have it. Also, Livius had had a tooth pulled mere hours before recording, so he’s a brave soul. Reminds me of the time Brian Evenson came on to talk to us like the day after getting out of the hospital for some surgery or another. People will do anything to get on our show.

Booked reviews Talulla Rising by Glen Duncan. We were very excited when we learned that there was a sequel to The Last Werewolf, which we reviewed all the way back in Episode #38. If memory serves, we gave Glen an overall 4.5/5 on that book. What did we think about his follow-up? You’ll have to listen to find out.

After some serious talk about the book, we get real serious about theft. Livius feels violated after someone lifts something precious from his car, Robb recounts a harrowing automobile mix-up, and we cover some book-related stuff. Also, we continue to make fun of Caleb J Ross (FCJR 4-LYFE!), and eventually get the idea that you probably stopped listening and call it a night.

What is Hardboiled and how did it start?
From the episode and some barebones net research (so please forgive/correct any glaring mistakes):
Today, Hardboiled is commonly considered a sub genre of crime fiction, but evidently it started out more diverse than that, including other genres like western or sci-fi. Hardboiled refers to a type of fiction that is very lean and tight. As Nik says in the episode, no extraneous words. It may have begun as a reaction to the practice of bloating stories to get paid more, when authors were getting paid on a per-word basis. One of the earliest publications of Hardboiled is Black Mask Magazine.

In the present day, the emergence of ebooks and readers has allowed for a resurgence in in cheap, readily available Pulp-style fiction.

Nik’s Recommended Hardboiled Books for Beginners

THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE by James M. Cain: An amoral young tramp. A beautiful, sullen woman with an inconvenient husband. A problem that has only one grisly solution–a solution that only creates other problems that no one can ever solve.
First published in 1934 and banned in Boston for its explosive mixture of violence and eroticism, The Postman Always Rings Twice is a classic of the roman noir. It established James M. Cain as a major novelist with an unsparing vision of America’s bleak underside, and was acknowledged by Albert Camus as the model for The Stranger.

PIKE by Benjamin Whitmer: Douglas Pike is no longer the murderous hustler he was in his youth, but reforming hasn’t made him much kinder. He’s just living out his life in his Appalachian hometown, working odd jobs with his partner, Rory, hemming in his demons the best he can. And his best seems just good enough until his estranged daughter overdoses, and he takes in his 12-year-old granddaughter, Wendy. Just as the two are beginning to forge a relationship, Derrick Kreiger, a dirty Cincinnati cop, starts to take an unhealthy interest in the girl. Pike and Rory head to Cincinnati to learn what they can about Derrick and the death of Pike’s daughter, and the three men circle, evenly matched predators in a human wilderness of junkie squats, roadhouse bars, and homeless Vietnam vet encampments.

What is Bizarro and how did it start?
From the episode and some barebones net research (so please forgive/correct any glaring mistakes): Bizarro got it’s start way back with the beginning of Eraserhead Press over a decade ago, but the name came a little later – in the era of the Mondo Bizarro Forum in the mid-aughts, which was frequented by big Bizarro names Carlton Mellick III, Jeremy Robert Johnson and Cameron Pierce.
Early Bizarro-identifying presses include the aforementioned Eraserhead Press, as well as the now shuttered Afterbirth Books, and Raw Dog Screaming. Today, there are also Lazy Fascist Press, Jeremy Robert Johnson’s Swallowdown Press, and Deadite Press.
