Please Donate Your Books.

2013-07-21T04:35:00.000-07:00

Dear All,

Bookmandu-Nepal is successfully collecting used books/notebooks by receiving donations from people who can afford their own educational materials. These collected books are being distributed/circulated to those unfortunate ones who cannot afford their own textbooks and notebooks. Bookmandu has been doing multiple programs of book collection and distribution, but currently, we, the volunteers of this organization are currently facing a serious problem—lack of adequate donors. We are running out of our stock of donated books as we have been distributing more books than we are receiving.

Because of this dire situation, we request all of you to please check your shelves and storage and look for old, used books and notebooks. After we pass a class, we either sell our valuable books and unused pages of our notebooks for cheap price or store them idly in our shelves and never get back to them. Please be aware that if you donate such used books and notebooks to Bookmandu, we will make a proper academic use of them by making those books accessible to the less fortunate ones. Your one step of donating used books will prove a boon to someone else’s future.

We are also establishing a library in Ramkot-8 VDC, and we are in a great need of books, magazines and any sorts of reading materials for that. Therefore, if you want to help us or know people who could be interested and willing to help us by donating their books or in any other manner, please don’t hesitate to contact us. Kalpeshower lower secondary school

2013-07-20T10:18:00.000-07:00

Kalpeshower lower secondary school was established in 2040 B.S. Just a 2km far away from ring road and situated in Ramkot vdc-8, Kallabari.

Look at the board of this school, we are so amazed that a principle who is running this school from 22 years can't afford a one single board for this school and as you go in deep this lower secondary school was deeply suffered from politics.

As stake holder of this society through small Ngo in educational field, we took a concern as you talked to different people of Kallabari they told us the quality that they provided in a Kalpeshower school wasn't good.

The most disappointing fact is Class one is running with the total students of two and they are learning ka, kha and ka, kaa.

From our community library we are doing our best to give the quality education by conducting one hour extra classes in library after school and different other program to enhance their skills of students.

As a educational organization our responsibility is focus the issue which is running against the system and run by few people for personal benefits.

We are looking for your kind help, if you willing to help us and support us please feel free to write us at

Role of volunteers is very critical in the success of an organization. Volunteers guide an organization in the path of success. only collecting books was not enough. maintaining the books, arranging them and labeling them was also important.
Volunteers of Bookmandu Nepal from Ramkot played an active role in maintaining the books collected from donors. We would like to salute the Volunteers for their effort, dedication on leading the path of success for Bookmandu and being the part of its steps.

Introduction

In our pursuit of education, we use books- a lot of it. But often, after we earn our educational certificates, these books often end up occupying our shelves idly. Recognizing that these books can really help in changing the lives of others, Bookmandu has been formed. We plan to collect books from donors, through our network of volunteers, and circulate to those who are in need.

Concept

Bookmandu is a platform for those potential volunteers, who think that books can be shared and exchanged to those who are in need. Our aim is to make a functioning network of donors and receivers of unused books that are stored idly in homes or sold for a few rupees without knowing its actual value.

Our main approach is to make full utilization of such books, by making a collection center and encouraging people to contribute books, which are going to be donated across schools and colleges in rural areas of Nepal. Our efforts will be directed towards utilizing the capacity of Kathmandu and use it as a knowledge bank of books and educational materials. We are launching two programs soon, which are “BOOKS FOR BOOKS” within the Kathmandu valley and “YOUR CONTRIBUTION, OUR BRIGHT FUTURE” project in specific rural villages in Nepal.

Challenges

Realizing the full benefits will take time as its an entirely new concept and it will take some time to fully start.
Creating an effective volunteering group, who can visit schools and colleges to introduce the concept to new people.
Raising sponsorship for our activities.
Making a good platform for people willing to volunteer.

Conclusion

Just like a child needing a helping hand to take its first step, Bookmandu requires support from the public to continue its efforts for meaningful results. We want to create and nurture a culture of book donation in Nepal. Our dream project is to make Kathmandu city, an open library where people needing books aren't refused the knowledge, just because of their weak economic situation.

Objectives

To run as a non-profitable organization to help the students of remote areas of Nepal by collecting all possible forms of aid
To deliver high quality programs and help students across Nepal and break the cycle of illiteracy
To provide unused books to the needy individuals, schools and colleges through exchanging and donating process.
To make the public aware about the real value of books, in a developing country like ours
To develop the culture of volunteering in Nepal, within the Nepali students To develop the concept of sharing, exchanging and distributing books rather than selling it in a few rupees.

It is with great sadness to report the shooting of Malala Yousafzai, the courageous 14-year-old activist who campaigned for girls' education in north-west Pakistan. News sources indicate that she was shot in the nick, but is out of immediat

e danger. Malala kept a diary for the BBC, documenting how the Taliban took over her town and closed all girls' schools three years ago. She bravely campaigned for girls' education fully aware of the risks she was taking.

Our thoughts are with her and her family. Bookmandu Team wishes her the speediest of recoveries.

We are with you.!!

OUR NEWS ON REPUBLICA ENGLISH DAILY

2012-10-02T08:26:00.000-07:00

	SELL,DONATE OR EXCHANGE
Sujan Maharjan, 18, says he’s been collecting books since his class five days. He didn’t have any siblings to pass them down to. And giving them away to junk for a few Rupees was not a way he would choose to part with his cherished collection. “The books were a valuable part of my life,” says Maharjan. “Junk is definitely not where they belong.” Then a few months ago while surfing facebook, he found a page called Bookmandu – a campaign to collect, distribute and reuse old books. After going through its information he immediately caught up with Suman Khatiwada, 23, the page owner. With some other volunteers who had joined the project they have now been able to collect some 500 used books and magazines. “After I completed my Bachelor’s degree, I wanted to donate my books to anyone who would need them,” says Khatiwada. “But I didn’t know who and where to turn to.” Then it struck him. “I knew most of my classmates would be going through the same dilemma. In that case, the books would either be lying idle on shelves or packed off somewhere and probably in a few years, sold off as junk paper.” He then started by collecting books from his friends and neighbors. By word of mouth promotion along with the facebook page, more people started donating. “We have nine people now who’re actively promoting and collecting books,” says Khatiwada. “But we’re still in our initial phase and our current target is to get more volunteers and build a stock of as many usable books and categorize them for an open library of books donated by the students for the students.” Using a small room in his house in Swayambhu as an office space and a storeroom for Bookmandu, he has been shelving books in neat racks. A month ago, Rs 500 were collected from each member to print flyers that they have been distributing at several colleges and student hangouts. “After we have enough books and a good space, our plans are to first start a book-for-a-book exchange program and also make photocopies of notes taken by students available,” Khatiwada shares. “When we start, we want to be prepared with enough materials. In the long term, we want to distribute the donated books to deprived and underprivileged students in remote areas.” Though they are currently in the process of figuring out how to handle the logistics of their project, Khatiwada says he is quite positive that they will succeed with the support and sense of volunteerism from the youths. While the group of youngsters is still in their planning phase, there are people who have also applied the idea of reusing old books with added commercial advantages. Shambhu Prasad Baral, proprietor of International Secondhand Book Store on Exhibition Road, started buying and selling old books from 1996. “When I was a student, I had gone to Calcutta where I visited a place called College Street,” shares Baral: “The street used have rows of old books piled on top of each other like haystacks and students passing by would scavenge the piles for books they wanted. I always loved the concept of reuse but I also knew everything had to be done in a systematic way.” Once he came back, he individually started collecting and buying books from his friends and contacts. “I remember waiting at college gates during exam times and handing out brochures to every student asking them to sell me their used books,” Baral recalls. Students were already selling and buying old books among their friends or people they knew. Baral jumped on the prospect of having a shared hub where students could carry this on and would give him an opportunity to pioneer the concept commercially. Soon, he had collected a good stock of books that he categorized and shelved in rows of racks with aisles that people could walk between as they hunted for the books. The books he bought from students at 30 to 40 percent of the original prices, he would sell them with a certain profit margin which would still be almost half the price you would have to pay for a new book. He also encouraged his customers to bring the books back after use for which they could get back 50 percent of the price they had originally paid. Along the twenty-five years of business, Baral says he has had a regular flow of students from and outside the Valley who come to buy and sell books. “It’s definitely beneficial for students as not only can they get books at cheaper prices but also are guaranteed a certain return after they have used them,” says Sagar Nepal, a BA third year student at Ratna Rajya Campus as he looks for a book in Baral’s store. The Exhibition Road alone has three of the oldest stores that sell secondhand course books. Tulsi Poudel of Hajurko Pustak Sansar, one of the three stores, also says that there is a greater demand for old books than new ones in her store. But due to financial risks involved in buying and selling old books, she says she also sells new books. Baral explains that publishers tend to shuffle or alter the contents of course books without a change in curriculum to trick the students into buying new books. “Moreover, the Curriculum Development Center should also make it mandatory to have clear information for students and buyers regarding curriculum change on the last page of a course book stating for how many years will it be effective and the course contents as well,” he says. Baral, who collects even outdated books, , has leased one extra room near his bookstore and two rooms in his house for storing old books and he’s further looking to start buying and selling used laptops as well. “I don’t believe that books can ever be outdated,” says Baral. “There’s always someone who can learn a thing or two new from it. Especially books of principles, philosophies and ideas – they never get old.” Agreeing with Baral, Khatiwada adds, “Books can change the lives of people, especially in a country like ours where many children are still deprived of basic education due to their inability to buy books. I think it’s selfish to stock up on books if you’re not going to use them.” Though Baral and retailers like him have taken the concept of reusing old books into a commercial frame and the volunteers like the youngsters of Bookmandu plan to have a network of students sharing their used books, their purpose is the same. Sell or exchange or donate books to have them passed around. You can’t let something as valuable as books go to waste, neither in grimy dumping sites nor in the neatly stacked idle shelves.

Dear All,

I am curious about something these days & I think it might be somehow related to all of you. What do you do to your books after you get your educational certificates? I believe they are occupying spaces idly in your shelves and tables, or, you must have sold it for few rupees, right? So do you believe that you have realized the actual value of your books?

From my experiences in life, I have realized that our education reaches its true potential only when it’s shared or applied practically. So we all should think about it. Throughout our live we probably have used lots and lots of books! However wouldn’t it be more rational and meaningful, if those books aren’t given idle spaces in our homes, and instead given to people who could really benefit from the knowledge inside such books? Thus I request all of you to hand out these valuable books, which contributed us in gaining our knowledge, to other needy people as well. For this very reason, I am introducing you all to a new non-profitable organization called BOOKMANDU.

Bookmandu is a platform for those potential volunteers, who think that books can be shared and exchanged with those who are in need. Our aim is to make a fully functioning network of donors and receivers of used and unused books that we wish to donate. Our aim is to make full utilization of unused and idle books by making a collection center and encouraging people to donate books, which are going to be distributed across schools and colleges in rural areas of Nepal.

Just like a child, who needs a helping hand to take its first steps, Bookmandu requires support from you all, to continue its efforts for meaningful results.
