Although I announced this during the last episode of Books and Ideas, I want to remind everyone that the show will be on hiatus until November 2020 while I work on my writing projects, including promoting the release of the second edition of my book Are You Sure?
Several years ago I interviewed Terrence Deacon about his fascinating book Incomplete Nature: How Mind Emerged from Matter. His goal was to propose a theory of how purpose evolved in a universe without purpose. His argument was persuasive, but highly technical. In this month’s episode of Books and Ideas I interview his longtime colleague Jeremy Sherman. His book Neither Ghost nor Machine: The Emergence and Nature of Selves makes Deacon’s ideas highly accessible to a wider audience.

What is the mystery of purpose? Sherman writes that the mystery of purpose is also “how aims emerge from aimlessness.” Then he argues that since only selves can have aims “the mystery of purpose becomes how selves and aims emerge from self-less aimless physics and chemistry.” We are ultimately exploring the mystery of how life emerged from a lifeless universe, but the answer is NOT evolution because we are looking for something that emerged before natural selection. It is a fascinating question and the possible solution proposed by Deacon and Sherman is fascinating because it doesn’t sidestep or evade the ultimate question of how meaning arose naturally in a universe without meaning.

This month’s episode of Books and Ideas is an interview with Susan Schneider, author of a fascinating new book called Artificial You: AI and the Future of Your Mind. Schneider's book goes beyond the question of whether AI might become conscious to issues that might affect us on a more personal level.

I am cross posting this in the feed for Brain Science because there is an obvious overlap with the issue of consciousness, which we often discuss on Brain Science.

I have been podcasting since 2006, which means Brain Science is about to turn thirteen years old. I can’t say the same thing for Books and Ideas since it is coming off a two year hiatus between January 2017 and January 2019. In contrast, my news show Graying Rainbows: Coming Out LGBT+ Later in Life just hit the one year mark in November.

Graying Rainbows is very different from my long running shows, both of which tend to focus on science and features interviews with authors and experts from a wide variety of fields. Graying Rainbows focuses on the personal stories of people from across the LGBT+ spectrum. I hoping this diversity will help set the show apart from other podcasts in the genre.

Graying Rainbows started out as a weekly show, but it has now settle down to a more comfortable monthy schedule. This allows me to keep all my shows fresh and regular. Look for Graying Rainbows in your favorite podcasting app on the first Monday every month.

Today I will share the first episode, which tells you a little bit about my story and why I started another podcast.

How does the brain generate subjective experience? This is what philosophers of mind have called Qualia and neuroscientist Michael Graziano proposes a fascinating answer In his new book Rethinking Consciousness: A Scientific Theory of Subjective Experience. In BS 162 explains how his Attention Schema Theory compliments several current theories of Consciousness by answering this critical question.

His theory had two critical components: one is that whatever circuitry the brain uses to attribute consciousness to others, is also used to attribute consciousness to ourselves. Second, a critical feature of this circuitry is that it provides an incomplete picture of what the brain is actually doing. Since awareness of what the brain is actually doing provides no survival advantage, we have the sense that our Mind is non-physical.

This may seem strange, but it is consistent with how we know our other senses work. For instance, we know the world we experience visually is highly processed, rather than an accurate depiction of the world around us. (Note: the is part 3 of a 4 part series, but episodes can be enjoyed in any order.)
