2016 Kawasaki KX450F – FIRST RIDE REVIEW

A strong racing heritage has been key to Kawasaki’s success, both domestic and abroad. What wins on Sunday sells on Monday, and Kawasaki has always made sure that the technology you see on its race bikes slowly trickles down to the consumer. For 2016, Kawasaki has released an all-new KX450F that is as close to a factory bike as you can get. A new chassis, engine, suspension settings, and bodywork are just a few of the numerous improvements done to the 2016 KX450F.
With the engine, Kawasaki’s goals were to shave weight and increase power. Internally, highlights include a new throttle body, piston, intake port, intake valves, and camshafts. Also new are the exhaust and cases, along with a revised airbox that flows more air into the engine for added power. Kawasaki says the improvements are aimed at increasing mid- to top-end power and over-rev, while also smoothing the power delivery.
The frame is also completely new. It weighs 3.1 pounds less than the previous frame, and it’s slimmer—by 6mm—to improve rider comfort. Targeted changes to the frame spars are said to improve the bike’s handling. These changes, together with slimmer bodywork, make the 2016 KX450F look and feel drastically different than last year. There’s also an improved swingarm with better torsional rigidity for increased rear-wheel traction. And although the Showa suspension isn’t new, the fork and both have new settings to match the chassis. The fork has new thinner inner tubes that save weight and increase rigidity.
ON THE TRACK
When compared to the 2015 KX450F, the 2016 KX450F is drastically different. Last year, we complained about the harsh action of the Showa SFF-Air fork, but for 2016 it’s not a problem. Aided by the new chassis and swingarm, the overall performance and feel of the Showa fork has improved dramatically. Last year, the fork was hash, and difficult to fix with minor clicker and air-pressure changes. Now, the initial settings work well for the majority of skill levels. The overall action of the fork and shock is balanced and predictable.
Throughout our testing, we didn’t make any major changes aside from a few minor clicker and air-pressure adjustments to stiffen up the fork on hard landings and g-outs. Additionally, the new lighter chassis contributes to a nimble feel. The KX450F used to feel big and heavy; the new 2016 bike feels light, nimble, and maneuverable. The slim bodywork also makes it easy to move around or slide up for corners, which, incidentally, the KXF dives into without hesitation.

As for the improved engine, its power comes on strong right off the bottom and continues to pull well into the top range. The changes to the motor have given it broader power, as well as an ability to rev. In short, the new KX450F motor is smoother, more powerful, and easier to control. For the first time, Kawasaki is also offering a handheld Kawasaki Accessory FI Calibration Kit, which makes EFI adjustments a breeze. The kit can also program any of the three available DFI Couplers, allowing for custom settings to be done and easily swapped out trackside.
THE VERDICT
The 2016 Kawasaki KX450F is one of the best bikes in its class, offering solid suspension, predictable handling, and a very strong motor. When compared to last year’s bike, Kawasaki has fixed the majority of the problems. We think it will be tough to beat in comparison tests and, most importantly, in racing.

We are suckers, all of us, and this limited-edition Ducati is proof. If the aqua-green frame and silver-metalflake paint don’t catch your attention, surely the sweet-sounding accessory Termignoni megaphone pipes will. This bike exists precisely to suck us in, to tweak our nostalgia, even if not everyone was around (or aware) when Paul Smart ripped up Imola for 200 miles to take the epic 1972 race win that put Ducati on the V-Twin sportbike map. Actually, there wasn’t really even a V-Twin sportbike map at that point!
Well, there is one now, and Bologna is right in the center of it. But aside from echoing the color scheme, this bike doesn’t actually look all that much like Smart’s 750. It does certainly have a classic form, modernized, and it does make a big impression.
Especially on the rider. What a fun motorcycle. The forms speak of times gone by, and the engine sounds with those accessory pipes are almost radial-aircraft-like when you are cruising down the highway at speed. Those sweet aluminum end caps bark out loudly but from the saddle make the perfect notes, at the perfect volume. It is true music. Just don’t ask the opinion of drivers you just passed.
In front of you is a pair of chrome-bezel, white-faced analog gauges and a steering damper. The latter Sachs unit was a bit of a surprise considering the frame geometry isn’t exactly radical (24-degree rake, 4.1-inch trail), but there was indeed a little shimmy now and again, especially on freeway rain grooves. Is it the Pirelli neo-Phantoms (complete with inner tubes, thanks to the center-drilled wire-spoke wheels) channeling a ’70s tire vibe? In any case, it was no big issue. And the old-style tread pattern on the modern 120/70-17 and 180/55-17 carcasses is too good!

The wheelbase spans 56.5 inches, quite a lot longer than the 54.9 inches of the current Supersport 1000, for example. And while it is longer than other newer Ducati sportbikes in keeping with its classic inspiration, the Smart is also sort of “upsized” from what the classic ’74 750SS was in terms of overall physical stature. The fairing, gas tank and tailsection are all a lot meatier, reﬂecting modern packaging issues such as maximizing airbox volume while still trying to carry a reasonable amount of fuel (latter is 3.9 gallons, giving decent range), stuffing in an ECU, evaporative emissions control, fuel pump for the 45mm throttle bodies and so forth. The frame, too, is wide, allowing for a broader-beam seat and classic contours in modern proportions.
The experience, the aura, all speak to the vintage-bike lover. The way the engine sounds, the look, the air-cooling, there is a suggestion of simplicity and an elemental nature, so that this brand-new motorcycle fulfills what many vintage-bike riders are after with 30-year-or-older machines. Riding the Smart provided the same kind of visceral pleasure that my old ’74 Norton Commando did (before I foolishly sold it). Except that the Smart is a modern sportbike with great power and a great chassis. And it doesn’t have leaky carbs or bad brakes.
So you get all the feel-good, over-the-top ambiance of vintage, with a tire shredding, knee-dragging modern machine that will almost positively keep on running until you turn it off with the key. Output from the two-valve, desmo 992cc V-Twin is superb, with a healthy 85 horsepower at the wheel. There is also the usual lovely torque curve, at 65 foot-pounds, with a ton of twist down low that makes the DS 1000 such a great street engine. (Incidentally, the factory claims that Smart’s 750 Imola made 80 horsepower, so you’ve got the next Italian 200 as much as won…) Fuel efficiency is pretty commendable for these days, too, with the twin-plug engine turning in about 38 mpg, Cold starts are no problem (insofar as 60 degrees in our sunny SoCal winter is “cold”) and the idle control is the same automated system (no fast idle lever, no choke in manual adjustments) as first ﬁtted the Multistrada. Also, when starting the engine, all one does is tap the starter button to activate the ﬁring sequence–the ECU completes cranking until the engine starts. We balked at this kind of automation at first, but the engine running is so consistent that you don’t really have cause to want to adjust anything. Go set the ﬂoats on your ’74’s Dell’Ortos if you get bored with all the perfect running of the Smart Replica.

The riding position is fairly aggressive, with low clip-ons (.8 inch lower than on the Sport 1000) and footpegs high enough to keep out of cornering harm’s way. Which is good, because while the steering is fairly high-effort and even a little slow in a classic kind of way, cornering stability at deep lean is excellent. The fully adjustable Öhlins suspension front and rear does a great job. The 43mm inverted fork and single, left-side-mounted, no-link shock provide a taut, sporty ride, giving you all the opportunity in the world to practice your knee-out style that Mr. Smart himself pioneered back in the ’70s.
If we’re looking for something to complain about—and we always are—we have to say Ducati cheaped out on the front brakes with two-piston, ﬂoating-caliper Brembos. But the company says these were utilized because they are smaller on the wheel side (no pistons there), giving necessary clearance for the spokes. Okay, so while they aren’t the four-pot calipers, these are pretty nice brakes. And they probably cost less, too. The discs themselves, meanwhile, are big 320mm pizza pans, which, it turns out, move the calipers farther from the spokes (which angle toward wheel center at the rim), too.
Honestly, you don’t notice any negatives from these calipers, on the road or when parked. What you do notice are a lot of neat touches that make the bike feel very much like a “pure” motorcycle. The battery mounting, for example, is a clean little tray between the tubes that supports the seat/tailsection.

Air-cooling means no water pump, no big radiator (just the oil-cooler), no extra weight or complication, just the airy form of the 90-degree V-Twin, the elegant trellis frame and that beefy steel-tube swingarm. The wiring is very well-hidden, further adding to the tidy nature. Surface finishes on the key parts were very much “tuned” to give off just the right shine (polished steering-damper body, chromed engine sidecovers) or sheen (alloy Excel rims, footpeg brackets). Overall, a very successful visual package that speaks retro and acts modern, just like so many vehicles these days, from Minis, Dodge Chargers and Ford Mustangs to Triumph Scramblers, Star Roadliners and almost every Harley made.
But the coolest part with the Smart is more than looks and sounds–the best part is riding. In terms of experience, while Ducati was looking to evoke the 1970s, what it has ended up with is a bike that feels much more like the true successor to the sweet mid-’90s 900SS, combining the classic Ducati air-cooled Twin with modern sportbike capabilities in a way the current Supersport 1000 doesn’t.
The $14,995 asking price doesn’t seem unreasonable for one of the 500 (of 2000 worldwide) Paul Smart Replicas coming stateside.
In a world that’s going retro, the Paul Smart 1000 stands out.

It was known as “Old Blue,” or later the “California Hot Rod,” a machine built and raced by Cycle magazine stalwarts Cook Neilson and Phil Schilling, and it has to be one of the coolest, most important Ducatis of the modern era. While there is no doubt that Englishman Paul Smart’s win at the Imola 200 did a lot for Bologna, no single bike or pair of people did more to make Ducati a household name in the U.S.
Neilson and Schilling gave Ducati its first major win in the budding AMA Superbike class at Daytona in 1977, not to mention writing all the stuff in Cycle championing the first 75OGT streetbike and ensuing models, articles that gave Ducati a glow in the U.S. market it still profits from today.
So, apologies to Mr. Smart, we felt a California Hot Rod 1000 SportClassic makes more sense. Neilson and Schilling were flattered when we sent this Cycle World-commissioned photo-illustration to them for review. “Your Photoshop guy did a great job on the paint,” said Neilson, “but for true verisimilitude, there has to be an Italian housefly molded into the surface of the fuel tank somewhere.”
He was of course referring to the first fiberglass-tank 750 Super Sport testbike sent to Cycle that did, in fact, have a fly stuck in the translucent “fuel gauge” stripe on tank side.
“l concur with Cook, and would like to add that any ‘tribute’ Ducati should have proper centerline stripes on the front fender, tank, seat and rear fender,” said Schilling. “Viewed from above, every stripe should veer off-course to the left or to the right. The stripes should never lineup individually or as a set. Just like the original 75OSS.”
Okay, Bologna, here’s your design for the CHR1000. Just make the stripes crooked–and don’t forget the fly.

2015 Triumph Tiger 800 XCx – ROAD TEST REVIEW

Turning the front wheel of the new-for-2015 Triumph Tiger 800 XCx toward the black sand and volcanic rocks of our favorite cinder mines near old Route 66 in the California desert was both thrilling and scary. As a lighter-than-liter-class ADV bike with a manageable middleweight-size engine, off-road-oriented wire-spoked wheels, and a suite of rider aids, the Tiger XCx had a lot of new tools to carry those big pannier boxes into this challenging territory. But 115-degree ambient temperatures and street-oriented Bridgestone Battle Wing tires on this giant black, sandy, solar-panel-like piece of earth made our future seem so uncertain, so unstable, almost light-headed.
Turns out I didn’t need to worry so much. The Tiger’s many upgrades and much-improved electronics made it fully manageable in these tough middle-of-nowhere desert conditions.

New for 2015, the Tiger 800 line (including two street-oriented cast-wheel XRs and two spoked XC models) got a big overhaul. With power delivery from this 800cc triple in a happy place, Triumph chose to refine the chassis, work on creature comforts, and boost computing power in the rider-aid package. There are a couple of reasons for this approach. First, for many of Triumph’s markets there are horsepower restrictions, and the Tiger was already close to the magic 95-crankshaft-horsepower limit for certain European countries with tiered licensing. Second, with 84 hp and 52 pound-feet of peak torque measured at the rear wheel on the Cycle World dyno, the bike already has a sweet combination of power and a great torque spread. So why mess with it? Our original intent was to pair the Tiger with BMW’s F800GS Adventure, its only natural competitor available in the US, but with the German company unable to meet our request in time, we went off the beaten path solo. After riding the XCx last year in Spain, we’ve been waiting to sample this bike on home soil, the rougher the better. Chassis tweaks, much improved electronics, and the XC’s more off-road-oriented wheel package (in dirt-friendly 21-inch front, 17-inch rear sizes) boosted the bike’s performance all around, but we wanted serious seat time to find where it stood on road and off.
We requested the “x” package for our testbike, which includes more sophisticated electronics and additional features, such as cruise control, auto-canceling turn signals, additional accessory power socket (there are two here), advanced trip computer, adjustable WP suspension front and rear, aluminum skid plate, hand guards, radiator guards, and a centerstand.

As a touring bike, the Tiger 800 has improved dramatically. Little things that just a few years ago we thought we could live without have now made long rides much more relaxing and tolerable. With cruise control, a nice bubble of buffet-free air behind the manually adjustable windscreen, and an upright and comfortable seating position, rider fatigue is minimized at the end of a long day in the saddle. As for the seat itself, it actually borders on the edge of too soft, offering a cushy feel but ultimately lacking long-haul support. Of course, this is an easy aftermarket fix. Another minor complaint is that the cruise control is too easily deactivated by rotating the throttle forward—big bumps in the road can jostle the right wrist enough to kick you out of cruise.
Triumph still needs to work on simplifying dash menu navigation. Practice here does lead to proficiency, of course, but this interface could definitely be made simpler and more intuitive. On that note, with such a small LCD screen, due to the real estate taken up by the large analog tachometer, some of the fonts on the screen are all but impossible to read in bad light or with a dark visor. Triumph, please see KTM’s menu nav setup and copy accordingly.

Another upgrade that the XCx has over its XC brother is higher-end WP suspension. Unlike the liter-plus flagships from Ducati, KTM, and BMW also featured in this issue, the XCx’s dampers are manually adjustable. Is this good or bad? We have grown accustomed to electronic suspension, and the very point of ADV touring is the ability to jump from pavement to dirt road to trail and back again at will. Electronic, semi-active suspension allows for settings to change on the fly for every inch of it. Which is why electronic suspension is sorely missed on an ADV like the Tiger—especially considering this bike’s $16,235 as-tested price—leaving you with a compromised setup most of the time. That said, there is an attraction to the simplicity and reliability that manual suspension offers.

On the highway, the Tiger’s cushy suspension offered a plush, comfortable ride, but load up the bags or throw on a passenger and you’ll be making manual preload and damping adjustments old-school style. You’re stuck with the fork preload since it’s not adjustable, but the shock has an easy-to-use knob and works over a useful range. The fork spring rate is on the soft side, so even with very lightly loaded bags and no passenger, this Tiger tends to ride low in the stroke. On curvy mountain roads, dragging the centerstand when hitting bumps or trail braking was all but guaranteed. I cranked in some compression damping using easy-access, no-tool, fork-top clickers to slow the dive and help use less travel over bumps.
A perfect example of what an ADV bike excels at was proven to me as I rode along a particularly horrible section of old Route 66. The road approaching Ludlow, California, is one of the most beaten sections of tarmac you will ever ride, with potholes and missing pavement, the whole thing littered with gravel. But on the Triumph, cruising at 85 mph was not only possible but comfortable. A big thank-you goes out to the bike’s long-travel suspension and large-diameter wheels.

Okay, on-road touring is solid. How is it off road? There is no better test than sand, with this bike’s non-knobby tires largely defining its performance limitations. As mentioned, our primary off-road testing and photo-shoot location was an inactive cinder mine that features everything from dune-like mountains of black sand to fields of golf-ball-size, sharp, and nasty lava rock, all scorching hot under a blazing summer sun.
After a few near crashes in the sand, I dropped the tire pressures down to a more ADV-appropriate 21 psi, which improved traction noticeably. I won’t lie: Despite weighing 40 pounds less than most of the liter-plus ADVs (and 33 less than the old Tiger XC), the XCx was work to keep upright in this most extreme of environments. With that said, the bike feels far more at home in the soft stuff than its predecessor did. Back on hardpack, the bike was very easy to control, which has just as much to do with the chassis as the bike’s electronics package. Throw on a set of knobbies like Continental’s TKC 80s, and the possibilities open way up.

Like most of the ADVs on the market, the Triumph offers an excellent suite of electronic rider aids. And as mentioned, the “x” model gets more sophisticated software than the standard XC. Modes include Road, Off-Road, and the customizable Rider. Each one of these modes is essentially an umbrella for a particular riding environment, with preset traction control (Road, Off-Road, or Off), throttle maps (Sport, Road, Off-Road, and Rain), and ABS settings (Road, Off-Road, or Off) for each. By going into the Rider mode you can customize a combination that suits your personal tastes. I set up Rider with Sport power delivery, no TC, and no ABS for our photo shoot and toggled back and forth between that and the Off-Road mode, depending on the situation. The latter offers reduced power, less intrusive TC, and off-road-oriented ABS (which shuts off ABS to the rear wheel). This gave me quick access to two very different motorcycle behaviors and a lot of flexibility.
This bike’s electronics represent the biggest leap forward from the old Tiger 800. The ride modes work great in their intended environments, boosting confidence and control in a way that allowed testers to get the most out of the bike in the safest manner. The standard Off-Road TC allows the rear end to step out just a bit but never lets it hang out to where the handlebar is on the steering stop. And while its ABS isn’t the sophisticated lean-angle-sensing type used on the BMW, Ducati, and KTM flagships, the Tiger’s worked well enough off road that I left it on for the majority of our dirt testing.

The many throttle maps give the XCx a good variety of power options for every type of terrain. But at the core, this 800cc inline-triple delivers an incredibly fun and absolutely flat plateau of torque from idle to redline. Throttle connection and response are exceptional on this engine, no matter the mode. The electronic controls are purely icing on top of this great engine.
Like many of the other offerings in the ADV fold, the XCx is an incredibly versatile machine. We hear comments from a large chunk of readers who ask why we would ever ride such big bikes in serious off-road conditions, but on the flipside we’ve attended quite a few adventure rallies where we’ve seen a dedicated and hard-core slice of riders using these bikes in demanding environments on a regular basis. Our experience and observation? These machines can tackle far rougher terrain than many owners will put them through. And perhaps that is the point; for some, actually pushing these machines to their limit is a regular reality, and for others it’s enough to simply know that it can go way out there.

You certainly can on the Tiger XCx. It is an exceptionally nice on-road touring bike that’s a too-squishy seat and some excessive engine heat short of absolutely killing it—not just in the middleweight class either. The core mechanical package remains solid, with the bike’s adventuresome nature boosted by the spoked wheels and much improved electronics, allied to its reasonably light weight. The middle road is a very good way to go.

Belum lagi gangguan oleh beberapa kelompok pemuda Kipas Hitam yang dilawan oleh Pemuda Republiken. Residen Sudirman, Gubernur Suryo, Pak Moestopo, Bung Tomo dan tokoh-tokoh lain membangkitkan semangat arek-arek Suroboyo & pemuda Indonesia bangkit melawan penjajahan.

Musa dipercaya sebagai kurir surat dan kode-kode rahasia yang dikombinasikan dengan lagu-lagu keroncong dari Radio Pemberontakan Rakyat Indonesia yang didirikan Bung Tomo. Berbagai peristiwa dilalui Musa sebagai kurir, kehilangan harta dan orang-orang yang dikasihi menjadi konsekuensi tugas mulia tersebut.

Berpacu dengan waktu, mereka berdua harus mencari tahu apa yang keluarga Tris korbankan demi nyawa mereka sekaligus untuk mengetahui mengapa para pemimpin ilmiah akan melakukan apapun demi menghentikan mereka. Pilihan masa lalu yang selalu menghantui Tris membuatnya putus asa untuk melindungi orang-orang yang dicintainya. Akhirnya, Tris bersama Four harus menghadapi sebuah tantangan demi membuka sebuah kebenaran tentang masa lalu yang akan berimbas pada masa depan dunia.

Sinopsis

Film ini mengambil setting setelah pertarungan antara Super Saiyan God Son Goku melawan Beerus, God of Destruction dalam film Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods. Setelah kehancuran Frieza, Sorbet yang mengambil alih pasukan Frieza tersebut. Demi mendapatkan kembali kekuatan tempur dan menguasai alam semesta, Sorbet dibantu oleh anak buahnya Tagoma, berniat menghidupkan kembali Frieza menggunakan Dragon Ball. Sementara itu Frieza yang berada di neraka dihantui mimpi buruk tentang kekalahannya dari dua orang Super Saiyan, yakni Son Goku dan Future Trunks.

Sinopsis

Mengembangkan adegan dari cerita dua film ‘Terminator’ sebelumnya. Film ini menceritakan robot bernama Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke) yang dibesarkan oleh Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger) dan memanggilnya ‘Pops’ yang dianggapnya sebagai ayah. Pada tahun 2029, John Connor (Jason Clarke) menjadi pemimpin dalam perang panjang dan mengerikan melawan para robot. John yang mengetahui salah satu dari robot itu adalah T-1000 (Lee Byung Hun) yang telah membunuh ibunya, Sarah Connor di masa lalu. Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) adalah salah satu tentara yang siap dengan misi kembali ke masa lalu demi menyelamatkan Sarah. Saat ini Sarah harus berusaha tetap hidup sekaligus melawan T-1000 bersama dengan Kyle dan Terminator.
