Patronaat Bar

Sometimes people ask me: what would be a really cool design job to do? Many things pop into my mind but I never imagined I'd be designing a bar. Apparently the Dutch venue Patronaat in Haarlem did, as they asked me to design one from scratch. They gave me the rough dimensions and told me they wanted a fairground/church theme. I had less then two weeks for this job, so I started right away making sketches of the shape, details, lettering and decoration. When I had the sketch ready I art-directed the 3D artist Jasper Hesseling to create a 3D digital model of it, giving the client a good image of how the venue should look. The builders constructed the bar from these 3D images, and they did an amazing job

Strap Lox is a new invention by DrNo effects: a revolutionary way to secure a guitar strap. A simple but really clever idea, if you ask me. I love working for DrNo as he gives me a lot of freedom. This time he asked me to design a cool logo and packaging in the look and feel of the DrNo identity I created previously. I wanted to create a logo with a powerful look that would depict a simplified version of the Strap Lox itself. Because of my love for typography I decided to create unique lettering instead of using existing typefaces. The lightning bolt between the two different typefaces represents the strong and quick connection between the Strap Lox and the guitar.

Photography by: b13visuals

I was asked by the French fashion label Kothai to create an artwork for their collection of reporterbags. The brief was to create something typographic with a vintage feel – something I really love doing. I wanted to do an artwork in an old-school record label style. They liked the idea, and after browsing my record collection for inspiration I created some sketches. When the sketch was approved I traced it in Adobe Illustrator and created a couple of different colour ways of the artwork. This Kothai Stereo bag will be available in stores and online in March.
DrNo

Recently I created the logo artwork and packaging design for DrNo Effects, a range of vintage guitar effect pedals. It has been an absolute pleasure to work on this job as I always love to mix graphic design, custom lettering and illustration. This project had all of these elements. I started by doing some rough sketches, and created six different vintage styles, one for each guitar effect. Within each artwork, I tried to reflect the sound and style of the effect. I created custom letters to make every effect unique and special. Finally, I placed the sketches in Illustrator, traced them and added colour.

As I'm a guitar player myself I have to say these vintage guitar effects are truly amazing and really take you back in time. But I guess this goes without saying as Alain Johannes of Queens of the Stone Age is one of the many users of DrNo effects. The effects are produced using the best components and materials available, and every stomp box is 100% handmade by DrNo himself.
Work in progress poster illustration for Belgium dance festival The Qontinent. I started by creating some rough composition sketches then rendered a more refined sketch, and traced this sketch onto a new piece of paper with fineliners, a brush, and ink. Then scanned it into the computer and added some colour and texture. I still have to do some details and finetuning, but I guess it is almost finished.

I've been designing a lot for DrNo-Effects lately including this screenprinted wooding box for shipping DrNo effects. It is such a fun project to work on.

I'm also working on a Wah pedal named 'Holy Wahcamoly' as you can see it is still quick test mockup. The lettering is eventually going to be done in a 3d rubber print technique, and the pedal is going to be vvvvery green ;-) and mexian stylish. This one will be in stores soon.

I've also been working on designing a new DrNo-Effects pedal called 'Brain Ray', with glow in the dark ink, so the brain will light up in the dark. This is a signature pedal for Brian Ray who is the guitarist for Paul McCartney. I'm really currious how this will look on stage during a live show.
