BIG RED FLAG! Boomerang Data Recovery uses an anonymous company 1Cart to handle some of their credit card processing. If you visit the companies website you will find no contact information. Thats right a company that handles your credit card does not list there phone number, physical address, or email. They also have an anonymous domain name registration.

How to spot "fake" and "suspicious" reviews by Boomerang Data Recovery

I have come across some possibly fake reviews most likely posted by the makers of Boomerang Data Recovery and VirtualLab. Have a look for yourself and you may come to the same conclusion.

harryrosetto only posted two reviews and they are both different versions of Boomerang Data Recovery

dawsongrey reviewed Boomerang Data Recovery, VirtualLab Data Recovery Software and an older version of VirtualLab Data Recovery all on the same day. Apparently, this guy bought all three versions of the software, yeah right!

What makes this even more suspicious is that Boomerang Data Recovery and VirtualLab Data Recovery are the same product, just rebranded.

Ok, some French dude named ErwanPierre gave 5 stars to both Boomerang Data Recovery and VirtualLab Data Recovery on the same day.

jontron2000 reviewed both the PC and Mac versions of VirtualLab Data Recovery and Boomerang Data Recovery all on the same day (January 29).

New Boomerang Data Recovery complaint posted to Rip Off Report

This complaint against Boomerang Data Recovery is very similar to mine, shame on you Boomerang Data Recovery.

"I had used the Boomerang DRS software (v1.1.2) ONCE in July 2008, and never used it again. I was a little skeptical when I learned of it's phone home requirements for each and every restore, but I wasn't using the software outside of the agreed upon usage terms, so I didn't think much of it.

4 months after the one and only time I had used the software, I started getting emails from BoomDRS telling me that my account was banned for license violations. I contacted support 3 different times, each time explaining that someone elses account had been mixed up with mine, providing specific details that pointed out the mixup within their system.

There was one FAQ that stated that if you inquired about a banned license, it would be reviewed by an actual human, and that you would get a response outlining the reason. I was never given this courtesy, despite pointing out the FAQ article in one of my contact attempts with Support. Sadly, this FAQ article no longer exists on their site."

When you visit Boomerang Data Recovery at http://www.boomdrs.com, scan the pages for a contact link and you will not find one. Now, they do have a contact form buried in their support section. However, if you read the testimonials here, you will learn that they may never respond too your inquiry.

No contact information, this is a sign that Digital Frontiers the company behind Boomerang Data Recovery may not back up their sales. If you do not want your customers too contact you, then do you really deserve their money? I do not think so, as this is why you should move on.

Here is Boomerang Data Recovery's statement about banned licenses. Adam Yates writes that you should contact them to review your license. The only problem is Adam, you guys do not respond.

Activation Server Gone Wild...
Hey gang,

Our activation server got a little aggressive yesterday, as a few hundred of you area already aware (our support queue has been loaded)...

What's happened? Well, with the release of version 2, licensing is being enforced, which essentially means that any one using the software for commercial/profit/etc reasons will likely be sniffed out and banned until they upgrade. We're not making the activation unusable, we're forcing an upgrade to the proper version for these people.

How does out License Server determine or conclude you are behaving in a 'commercial' activity? Quite simply: Use. The more you save, the more times you save the more likely you're using Boomerang not for personal use. Frankly, just how many times does a person need to recover their data anyway? Some of these deactivations were for uses as much as 3000 times. Come on now.. do you really lose data that often?

Why do we do this? Because we intentionally keep the pricing one level for personal use, so that those that aren't engaged in making money with my software get subsidized by those that are. Like it or not (and frankly I'm not too keen on it, but it is what it is), I have a fiduciary obligation to you and my team, and I fully expect to be around in a decade developing software for you.

This is not meant to inflame or infuriate. Those that are using the software for gain know the value of the tools we publish and won't have a problem paying for the use as such. Those of you that got caught up in the net need to just open a polite support ticket and we'll take a look at your account. (I sent in three "polite" support tickets and have yet to receive an answer!)

In any case, I want to thank you for your patience as we continue to evolve, and I thank you for your continued support.

More Evidence That Boomerang Data Recovery Has Crappy Customer Service

Here are a few Reviews from CNET's download page. Hopefully, the word will get out that their customer service sucks and people should avoid this company.

"HORRIBLE SUPPORT! Do Not Purchase From This Company!"

Pros: Original purchased version was able to recover 500gb drive.

Cons: Developer mistakenly bans your license for fraudulent use (despite only ever having used the software ONCE) and forces you to upgrade to continue use by ignoring any inquiries into the matter.

Summary: Stay FAR FAR FAR FAR away from this company!!! They could have the solution to world peace, global warming, and provide alternatives to fossil fuel. BUT, if they embrace shady business ethics and treat you as nothing but a common criminal, then I want no part of it.

I used Version 1.1.2 to recover a 500gb drive. Worked as expected, and never used it again. 4 months later, I received a banned license notice. I received this notice twice, listing 2 different license codes, purchase dates, and IP addresses. Mind you, I only bought this software once and used it once.

There is no direct contact number, email, or physical address for this company. The 800 number on the credit card statement is disconnected with no forwarding number. Your only method of contacting them is through a form on their website. I used this form 3 times to try and clear up my license issue, and each time I was ignored.

There was a FAQ posted to their site that states that they employ a policy of assuming you are guilty, but if you have a banned license issue, a human will look at it and get back to you with more specific reasons. I was never given this courtesy, and was simply ignored. That FAQ posting has since disappeared.

Any company that hides behind this kind of secrecy and won't man up to accept responsibility for any errors/mistakes on their part shouldn't be trusted. My only options of resolution, in their eyes, was to 1) spend more money to upgrade to their newer version (which is licensed WAY differently than Version 1, and not in a better way IMO), or 2) suck it up and consider my original purchase a "recovery fee". I chose neither, and instead disputed the charge with my credit card company.

Exercising YOUR rights as a consumer only gets you listed on cheats-and-liars.com as either a Cheat or a Liar (I'm apparently a liar). They list your name, city/state/zip, IP address, and the amount you've disputed. Either you accept the false accusations placed upon you and pony up more money, or get libeled on a website that THEY run? No thanks! (Currently there is no way of getting your name taken off of the list or pleading your case)

Despite having a product that worked for me, I can't justify or endorse the shady business ethics that Boomerang DRS embraces. And neither should you.

Pros: It does what it says it does, it recovers data

Cons: It recovers data at an astronomical cost. Once you've recovered your quota of say 100MB for $40.00 thats it, your done! 100MB for 40.00? Are you kidding? I wish I was.

Summary: There are plenty of data recovery programs out there and this one is by far the worst bang for your buck. Customer service is non-existent and pretty much a no money back clause. DON"T DOWNLOAD!

Today, I have submitted my 3rd Helpdesk ticket to Boomerang Data Recovery regarding my banned serial. My previous Helpdesk tickets submissions have gone unanswered.

I have had no response to my support questions using there Help Desk request forms. There is no contact information on their website. No address, no phone, no email address. This in my opinion is a bad sign.

"Inept Bookkeeping And Unresponsive Support - Software Recovery"

"Boomerang Recovery, owned by Digital Frontiers sells their software from their website. My daughter lost files on her Mac. Boomerang was recommended. I purchased it for her on my (Bank of America), credit card, (she is a student in a student in another state) and she never received the activation number.

Navigating their website we could not get a response to the problem and navigating their site is big waste of time. I told her to buy it again on her credit card and would cancel the sale on mine.( Bank of America as well.) which she did and was finally able to use it. I had my card company charge back since I never received the number to use it and I wouldn't be able to anyway. Then she received an email that her name was put on a website called" Cheats and Liars.com". I contacted Digital numerous tomes and Cheats and Liars with no response from Digital. They mixed up the transactions, card numbers and names. I finally sent copies of card statements from both of us reflecting the transactions on the 2 different cards and dates etc. All they had to do was email me, pick up the phone and it could be sorted out easily.

They are so sure ("they" includes the insidious "cheats and liars" site) in their arrogance they are right, have done harm to somebody that did nothing to defraud them. There are rules and protocol that can prevent mistakes like this. Throwing the names onto a website is not the way to resolve a problem. Even with the evidence at hand, her name is still there.

I am now considering legal action among other forms of making my complaint known."

A second support ticket submitted to Boomerang Data Recovery

On February 6, 2009 a second helpdesk ticket was submitted to Boomerang Data Recovery Support. As of today the 1st helpdesk ticket submitted to Boomerang Data Recovery has gone unanswered.

"Again, I am submitting another ticket! My activation code has been banned. I have not used this software for commercial or professional use. Please provide me with the information that you used to determine this status. If this can not be provided, then please reactivate my account or refund my money.

If you do provide me with the information requested, I would also like a contact phone number and address.
