Ring In The New Year!

Hope you are having a great 2012 so far.
As you can see we have made some major changes to Booming Greyhounds.

We have changed the colour and layout to the site.

As you can see there are tabs added with different categories (Broods, Breeding, For Sale etc) so you can link to different pages on that subject.
The Labels and Archives for all the posts can still be found on the right side of the site, so you can still easily find the posts on a particular subject.
The Recommended Sites have been moved to the new Links Page. Just click the Links tab for a list of our favourite sites.
All the latest news and articles can be found on the Home page so you can easily view all the new updates.
Please feel free to have a good look around and let us know what you think of the new and (hopefully) improved blog.

We are now a DOT COM !

You can now access us on our new domain www.boominggreyhounds.com. Though you can still use the old boominggreyhounds.blogspot.com address as we thought it would be easier for everyone.

There is still work in progress.

Have A Very Booming Merry Christmas

We would like to wish all our readers a very Merry Christmas.

Bessie and Dolly will both be eating their Christmas dinners together for the first time.
As will Archie who has settled down to his new life very well.

Bessie Is Back

Matt And Me is back home in England.

Bessie has been living in the breeding establishment of Larry Byrne at County Wexford since November 2007.
In that time she had whelped two litters of pups.
The first a litter of two dogs and four bitches were born in April 2008 and included Hawks Jewel (Dolly).
The second litter of one dog, Best Day Ever (Archie) and one bitch Black Jool (Dotty) were born in March 2009.

It was decided by ourselves and Larry that due to the current economic climate and that she was nearly eight years old, it was best to retire Bessie from the breeding paddocks.

We purchased the November 2003 black bitch back in January 2004.
She made her racing debut at Poole in an A8 graded race on May 2005, going all the way up the grades to run in A1.
Her final race was at Reading in October 2007 in an A5 graded race.
She ran in seventy six races and won fourteen of them.

Bessie arrived from Ireland in August and is now living at home with her daughter Dolly (Hawks Jewel).
She has settled in t o her new home and is a very happy lively middle aged girl.
Her and Dolly are getting on really well together.
It is great to see Bessie enjoying her new life.

Thank you for all the good times you gave us and the good times ahead.

Archie - Injured And Calling It A Day

Best Day Ever has retired from racing.

He ran his last race on the 2nd July at Poole in an A7 graded race.
Running from trap three he was slow out of the box .
At the second bend something went amiss as he stopped at the run in and came of the track lame.

The following day he was checked by the vet and was found to have a badly torn muscle in his hind leg.
The vet advised us that the injury was bad and to race him again would be a great risk to him.
Archie's welfare is the most important thing as with all our dogs and we immediately decided to retire him and to find him a home as soon as he was fully recovered.

He made his racing debut on the 8th October 2010 in an A9 grade at Poole when he ran into second place.
His first win was to come in his third race when he won the A9 grade from start to finish.
He was only to win another three times in his short twenty five race career.

It was a shame that the big brindle dog was not given the chance to show his true potential as he was lucky to race more than twice a month.
Archie was just over two years and three months old when he ran his last race.

This handsome brindle dog is a lovely dog with a lovable nature.

There is an happy ending for Archie as he is now a family pet living in a very nice home.
He took no time to settle in and is living the lovely retirement he rightly deserves.

Have a great retirement Archie.
We miss you.

Our apologies for not posting on here for a while.

Due to work and other commitments it has been difficult to find the time to post updates.
But with all that out of the way, hopefully there will be more regular news posted.

Also in the near future news about some changes to this site.

Dolly Is Retired

Dolly enjoying retirement

Hawks Jewel has been retired from racing.

Dolly was injured in a race back in January with a suspected cracked pelvis.
She was rested for three months to recover and was showing all the signs of a full recovery.
In May she was given a two bend hand slip at Poole. But as soon as she approached the first bend she broke down.

We decided immediately to retire her from racing.

In her thirty eight race career she won nine of them (just over one in every four races).
She raced over four and six bends and ran in two open races.
Staying was her game and though she lacked early pace her strong running at the latter stages of a race made her a joy to watch.
Injury hampered her chances of reaching her full potential.

When she has made a full recovery our intention for the future is to use her as a brood.

The daughter of Westmead Hawk x Matt And Me is well on the mend and is now living the life of luxury in her new home.
She is a very happy girl and seems to be enjoying every moment of early retirement.

Thank you Dolly for all the pleasure you have and continue to give us.

Jonny Whitesox Runs Into The Third Round

Jonny Whitesox ran third in his second round heat of the WilliamHill.Com Greyhound Derby at Wimbledon last Saturday night.

Jonny (trap six) the only wide dog in the race trapped well and took his normal wide birth into the first bend.
He came of the second bend to challenge Taylors Cruise (trap five) for the lead.
He could not pass the leader but was up with him coming into the third.
Taylors Cruise kicked on in the run in to win the race by two and a half lengths in the time of 28.39 seconds (+10 going).
The strong finishing Blue Artisan in trap two just pipped Jonny into second place by a short head at the run in.

Jonny will run in tonight's Third Round which will be live on Sky.
He is again facing more tough opposition (though all the derby races are tough) in Heat 5.
Amongst the opposition are the 2009 English Oaks winner Shaws Dilemma in trap four and again Blue Artisan in trap three.
This time Jonny will be running from the trap five box.

Fingers crossed that he will get a good run and qualify for Tuesday's quarter final.
The best of luck to Jonny and all his connections tonight.

Ten Day Archie Runs Fifth

Best Day Ever was racing at Poole last Tuesday night.

He was running in the A6 graded race over 450 meters.
Archie in trap two was slow out of the box and met a crowd of dogs at the first bend'
He did recover at the back straight and did make up some ground on the leaders but tailed of at the run in to finish in fifth place.

This was his second run in ten days so hopefully he might get some regular racing under his belt.

Sophie Comes A Gallant Third

Blue Malibu was running in her first A4 graded race at Poole on Friday 20th May.

Sophie in trap two, did not get out the box as well as the other runners.
At the first bend she met a crowd of dogs and could not get past them.
She managed to sort herself out at the back straight but could not make an impression on the eventual winner Blue Shadow to finished four and a half lengths behind in third place.

This was a good run from Sophie and very pleasing that she is staying the 450 metre trip a lot better than she use to.

This little blue is still proving that greyhound racing can be full of surprises.

Jonny Whitesox Wins On His Derby Debut

Jonny Whitesox won his first round heat of the WilliamHill.com Greyhound Derby at Wimbledon.

He was running from trap six in the 480 metre competition.

The March 08 black wide running dog was the only wide runner in the race and took his normal wide course to be third at the first bend.
At the back straight he was chasing the leader Glenard Sunrise and took the lead at the third bend.
Jonny managed to hang on to the lead and won the race by a short head in the time of 29.05 seconds (normal going).

He is running in the Second Round on Saturday in Heat 14 (9.15pm) and is in trap six and again the only wide runner in the race.

This will be a tough task as amongst the opposition are the 2010 Gymcrack winner Blue Artisan in trap two and the 2011 Scottish Derby winner Taylors Cruise (trap five).

Let’s hope Jonny gets a good run and qualifies for the third round.
As he has shown already he is more than capable of doing it.

A Win For Sophie But A Sixth For Fortnightly Archie

Both Archie and Sophie were in action at Poole last Saturday night.

Best Day Ever was out in the first in the A6 graded race over 450 metres.
Running from trap three he did not get out well and was involved in some bumping with the runner in trap two.
While trying to gain a good position at the first bend he hit the rails but managed to stay on his feet.
Though it must have hurt he did recover to finish in sixth place less than five lengths behind the winner.

The important thing is that Archie came of alright though he was a bit sore in the morning.
It was another two week gap between races which seems to be unfair as he is always going to be racing against dogs who seem to be getting regular weekly racing.

He is not out again this weekend and unless he is out on Tuesday looks to be waiting at least another two weeks for his next race.
It's a shame to see that Archie is not being given a a fair chance to race and at this rate even with out injury will probably be lucky to race more than twice a month.
That is compared to others who get to race between three to five races a month.

Blue Malibu was out in the last race of the meeting in an A5 grade.

Sophie, running from trap two was slow out and was crowded at the first bend
She recovered well and ran well enough and at the third bend took the lead.
She ran on to win by three quaters of a length in the time of 27.60 seconds (normal going).

This was yet another surprise from the little blue bitch as she has always struggled with the 450 metre distance. Also the fact she took the lead at the third bend and won was a pleasing thing in itself.

She is running this Friday in an A4 graded race at Poole.
Sophie just seems to surprise us all and it is down to her guts and determination that she is now at this moment an A4 grader.
Well done Sophie our surprise package.

Jonny Whitesox To Make His English Derby Debut

Jonny Whitesox will be running on Friday in the first round of the Williamhill.com Greyhound Derby.

The top Wimbledon event starts this Friday night with Jonny set to run in Heat 4 at 8.30pm.

He has been seeded as a wide runner and will run from trap six.
Jonny is up against some very strong opposition but hopefully he can take advantage of being the only wide runner in the race and with luck qualify for the next round.

He is owned by Kieran Lennon and Tom Kelly.

Kieran also owns Archie’s litter sister Black Jool.

The Derby has got to be one of the toughest races in the world with the top dogs from the UK and Ireland having to run five times in four weeks to win the premier four bend event.

Jonny did get to the third round of the Irish Derby last year and also was a finalist in the Waterford Masters so is use to running amongst top class opposition.

He should certainly have no problems with the 480 metre distance and the tighter track at Wimbledon should suit his style of running.

Hopefully he will run well and maybe go all the way.

You never know!

Another Win For Black Jool

Black Jool (Hondo Black x Matt And Me) clocked up an impressive win at Waterford on 30th April.

The lightly raced black bitch was running in the heat of Norah Jacob Memorial A5 over 525 yards (480 metres).
Running from trap one she got out the traps and took up the race from the first bend.
It looked like that she was going to be picked up at the back straight but the tiny black was having none of it and kicked on again to win by four and a half lengths in the time of 29.03 (+30 going).

The following week she ran in the semi final and trappedwell again and was with the leaders at the back straight but faded and came home in forth place.
She picked up a muscle injury in the race and will be of racing for about six weeks.

Black Jool is the litter sister to Archie and even though still a little on the small size has a very big heart when it comes to racing.
She stays on very well and looks to be a good prospect for the future.

Sophie Still Full Of Surprises

Blue Malibu came fifth in the A5 graded race at Poole last Tuesday.

Sophie was running from trap two did not get out well and was crowded at the first bend.
She did recover well and showed her usual guts and determination to try and catch the runners in front.
She met trouble again at the third bend and finally crossed the line in fifth place.

Sophie has done well since her seasonal return to racing and has won an A6 and is doing some good times in A5 company.

Fortnightly Archie Comes Forth.

Best Day Ever ran forth at Poole on Saturday 24th April.

Archie was running in an A6 graded race over 450 metres.
Running from trap two he did not get out the traps too well and met trouble at the first bend.
He recovered well at the second bend and started to make some ground up to the leading dogs.
In the end it was too much for him and he finally finished in forth place.

It was not a bad run as he is still not getting the runs with at least a two week gap between races.

Dolly Is Injured

Hawks Jewel has been of with what looks like to be a cracked pelvis since the end of January.

Dolly finished 2010 at Poole with a win in an A3 graded race over 450 metres.

She started the New Year in good fashion finishing in second place on New Year’s Day over the 640 metre S3 grade over six bends.

Just less than two weeks later she was running again over the S3 six bend grade.

This time she stepped it up to clock up her first win of the year.

Two weeks later Dolly ran in the four bend A2 graded race in trap one.

But disaster struck as while running, she pulled up at the third bend in what looked like a broken hock.
Luckily it was not a broken up but most likely a cracked pelvis.

Dolly is still recovering and is being given plenty of time and rest for her injury to heal.

Hopefully we will know late April or early May if the injury has healed well.

At this moment we have no idea if her racing career is over or not.

We only have her welfare at heart and should know more nearer the time.

She is certainly in good spirits and her normal happy self.

Hopefully we should know a lot more in the next month.

Sophie Is Our Surprise Package

Blue Malibu has done very well since her last race of 2010.

Sophie finished the year running in an A8 graded race at Poole, where she finished in fifth place.

Two days later she came in season and it was decided to give her ten weeks rest from racing.
This seems to have been a great help to the little blue girl as she has surprised us all since her return to racing.

She graded back and made her 2011 debut on the 28^th of January in an A8 graded race.

Running from trap two, she flew out of the traps and lead from start to finish, winning by two lengths.

A week later she ran over the 450 metre trip in an A7 grade.

As in her previous race she led from start to finish, winning her second race in a row.
Though this time she only held on to win by a head.

Eight later she made her A6 debut but did not get out of the traps well and managed to finish in 4^th place.

Just over a month and another four races later in A6 company Sophie showed another gutsy run to record her third win for the year.

Three days later she was out again and made her debut in an A5 grade.

This time Sophie (trap two) could only finish in third place to finish one and a quarter lengths behind the winner Blue Shadow.

Sophie runs on Saturday at Poole’s BAGS meeting in another A5 grade.

Our little blue girl has done far exceeded what was expected from her.

She has certainly lost none of her guts and determination and has shocked us all with her performance on the track.

This is now a whole new ball game for her and who knows how she will perform from now on.

Even though she has come back stronger, she still does not stay the 450 metre trip that well.

This just goes to show that greyhound racing can be full of surprises.

Archie - Better Days To Come

Best Day Ever has started the climb up the card at Poole.

Back in November he had his first win in an A9 graded race over 450 metres.
Since then he has run another thirteen races and has won another three to reach an A5.
The races won were an A8 grade on the 8th of January, an A7 ( 8th February) and an A6 on the 1st of March.

He is doing very nicely and is showing some very good early pace in most of his races.
Front running seems to be his forte as he seems to win all his races when he leads at the bend.

Archie will be running on Friday at Poole in an A5 graded race from trap two.

Hopefully this is just the start of what will be a nice rise up the grades.

Sorry it's been a while since we posted any news on here.

This has been a busy time over the Christmas and New Year period with over commitments to work and major home improvements being the main reasons for not updating.

A lot has happened with our dogs since christmas.
There has been both good and bad news to report.
The most important thing is that they are all with us and still giving us pleasure.

With spring knocking on the door the times ahead look hopeful.

Updates on all our dogs, and other news will be appearing here very soon.

Merry Christmas From Booming Greyhounds

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from Dolly, Archie and Sophie

Hope you are all enjoying this festive time.

2010 has been a very up and down year for us.

With Dolly (Hawks Jewel) rising through the grades in 2009 there was so much to look forward to this year.
But it came to a halt with her injury back in March and a three month lay of from racing.
Dolly did make her comeback in July and finally seems to be getting back to her old self.

Also 2010 saw two new arrivals with Sophie and Archie joining us.

Sophie (Blue Malibu) came to us back in April and though at first having trouble staying the 450 metre trip at Poole finally graded in and managed to win an A8.
She came in season in November and is expected back racing early in the new year.

Archie (Best Day Ever) arrived in August.
The son of Hondo Black is from Bessie's (Matt And Me) second litter.
He graded in at Poole and made his racing debut in October winning his first race in November.

Incidentally his sister Black Jool made her racing debut over four bends at Waterford in December.

She has raced twice and has finished second and third, staying and running on well she looks an exciting prospect for the future over the longer trip.

Nobody knows what to expect in the new year but hopefully it will turn out to be a good one.

Dolly Goes Forth - Again!

Hawks Jewel was out again in a six bend race at Poole.
The 640 metre distance was another S3 graded race in a month.

Running from trap two she got out well and led at the first bend.
Dolly could not maintain her lead and was quickly overtake.
She finally ran home in forth place two and a half lengths behind the winner Braceyourself in trap four.

A few days later Dolly was diagnosed with tonsillitis so was probably in quite some pain during the race.
She is currently being treated and will run when the problem has been cleared.

Archie's First Win Is His Best Day Ever - So Far!

Best Day Ever won his first ever race last Friday 9th November.
He was running in the A9 graded race over 450 metres at Poole.

Archie in trap three, broke out of the box well to take the lead at the first bend.
He remained in front throughout and crossed the line to win in the time of 27.99 (normal going).

This was only his third race and he has got to know the racing game quite quick.

Archie will be running again on Friday in an A8.
He has been moved in and will run from trap one.

Hopefully this is just the start for this big brindle pup.

Jonny Whitesox In The Waterford Masters Final

Jonny Whitesox has reached the final of The Waterford Masters.

Kieran Lennon and Caroline Grant's May 08 son of Droopys Scolari x Hold On Angel runs on Saturday night at Waterford.

The hot final includes Krug Ninety Five who was third in the Ladbrokes Irish Derby .
Jonny ran his way to the final by winning his semi-final heat last Saturday.

The final runners are

TRAP 1: Beaming Dilemma (Brett Lee x Beaming Heart)
TRAP 2: Tyrur Enda (Razldazl Billy x Regards to Alice)
TRAP 3: Leeview Jet (Tucks Mein x Between the Two)
TRAP 4: Krug Ninety Five (Droopys Maldini x Frontier Music)
TRAP 5: Thurlesbeg Joker (Head Bound x Free to Air)
TRAP 6: Jonny Whitesox (Droopys Scolari x Hold On Angel)

The Waterford final is sure to be a good race and whoever triumphs will be a worthy winner.

We would like to wish Kieran, Caroline and of course Jonny Whitesox Good Luck On Saturday.
We wish Kieran the best of luck with Jonny Whitesox. We are sure he will do you proud. Whatever the result.

Plenty Of Fireworks But No Celebrations For Our Girls

Both Sophie and Dolly were racing at Poole on Friday 5th November.

There were fireworks going of for most of the meeting and all the dogs were only briefly paraded before racing as not to cause distress to them.

Sophie was running in the first race of the meeting and downgraded to an A8 graded race over 450 metres.
The little blue was in the blue box of trap two .
She was very slow out of the traps and found herself at the back of the pack at the first bend.
As usual she started another of her gutsy runs at the back straight to catch the others and did make a bit of headway.
She did manage to pass one of the runners but ran out of puff to finish in fifth place behind the winner Barra Quest in trap six.

Sophie came in season on Sunday so will have a break from racing for her seasonal rest.

Dolly was out later in a six bend S3 graded race over 640 metres.
Running from trap one she did get out quite well but met trouble throughout the race.
The race was won by No Call (trap three) who was out and gone in the fast time of 39.45 seconds. Five and a half lengths ahead of the second place runner Caloona Pirate (trap six).
Dolly was pipped for third place by a short head and ran home in forth place.

The going was slow on the night and was only given a -10 allowance for the four bends and -15 for the six bends.
The going seemed slower than that as the A1 race was won in the time of 27.49 seconds and the fastest time of the night was won in an A3 grade in the time of 27.30 seconds (27.20 with the -10 allowance).

Dolly finished in the time of 40.00 seconds (39.85 with the -15 going allowance) so ran better than the result suggests.

Another Sixth For Sophie

Blue Malibu was out again last Friday night at Poole.
She was running in the A7 graded race over 450 metres.

Sophie was back in the white jacket of trap three she managed to get out better than her previous race but was still slow out and found herself behind at the first bend.
She showed her usual guts and determination and tried to make up ground at the back straight.
But it was not enough and she finished in sixth place, five lengths behind the winner Linaria in trap one.

This has been her ninth race in an A7 grade so hopefully she may get a down grade and a better chance of a run.
