20. Get a tattoo, or piercing.

I got my tattoo on Tuesday! It was thus far the most fun thing on the list.

I got a cherry blossom on my shoulder.

It wasn't too bad, pain wise. The only thing that bothered me was toward the very end when he was done and went back over with some detail work, and one blossom over a bone in my shoulder was less that pleasant.

Washing it was also less than stellar. The first time I washed it, I patted it try with paper towels, and it stuck. When I peeled it off I got a little woozy. haha, but other than it's been uneventful. We will see how I feel about it once the itching sets in.

Like the giant girl I am, I took pictures when I got up for breaks.

This is mostly done. He sprayed some stuff on my back, and let me sit for a few minutes before he did the detail work.

I am getting my tattoo!

Last night I finally went in and talked Sean about what I want and where. He is going to draw something up for me and I am going to get it on the 20th!

I'm going to wait to show you until it's done, but I am really excited about. The guy doing it is named Sean Williams. www.CollectiveTattoo.com You should go look at this stuff, he is really talented and has done a lot of work for my friends, so I know he does good work, and I really like the general style of the art he does.

I, on the other hand, am an enormous nerd.

Zaile just asked me to watch Lord of the Rings.

She can watch most of it. I fast forward through the end with Boromir dies because I think it would be too scary for her. Which is good, because I sob like a hysterical woman while that is happening... And then lose it completely when the hobbits fun forward in a last ditch effort to save him, and get taken by the Uruk-hai. I'm seriously getting a little weepy over here just thinking about it. Seriously.

Noooo!

Anyway - So Zaile asked me to put on Lord of the Rings, and I was so pleased she wanted to watch it, I burst into my favorite speech from that movie...

"In place of a Dark Lord you would have a queen! Not dark, but beautiful and terrible as the dawn! Treacherous as the sea! Stronger than the foundations of the earth! All shall love me and despair!"

Sadly, I know all of that by heart, and can not say it unless I say it in compete over the top theatrics at the top of my lungs.

Zaile took it in stride though. She just rolled her eyes and said,

"No, not like that. On the TV."

I love that kid.

The Downside of Giving Your Pet's Awesome Names.

I have quite a few pets... most of which happen to have awesome names... IMHO. =)

My puppy is named Lord Vader

My other dog's name was Pikachu

My cats are named Link and Zelda

Einstein was one of my chickens.

My top of the pecking order Rooster... Marcelus Wallace.

What does Marcelus Wallace look like!?

And my snake... Her name is Salazar Slytherin

She is a girl snake though, so we call her Sally.

Thus far, I'm sure you are thinking... "Downside? What downside? So far this is the best pet name blog I've ever read!!" Yes, yes that is what you're thinking.

The downside when is when your pets misbehave. The result is you shouting a really weird sentence, often in the presence of strangers or neighbors.

Some examples of this would be...

"do not hump !!"

"The neighbors dog killed ."

" is chasing again!"

"stop trying to kill! You are supposed to love her!!"

"peed on the floor again!"

And when you are in bed at 3 am your husband might say things like,

"If doesn't shut up, I am going to kill him, and eat him for dinner."

Random Acts of Christmas Kindness

I am stealing this idea from a friend, who stole it from a friend.... You get the idea... and I encourage you to steal it from me too.

To count down to Christmas this year for the month of December we are going to do random acts of Kindness.

I want to teach my children the joy of giving, sharing, and helping others, and in this day and age it is getting harder and harder. Especially around the holiday season. People tend to get tunnel vision on what they want for Christmas, and they lose sight of what Christmas is truly about, and the joy that you can find in bringing happiness to others.

I think this will be a really fun way to get my kids excited about, and more focused on giving to others, instead of focusing on what they are going to be getting.

Anyway, we will make little cards that briefly explains what we are doing, and wishing them a Merry Christmas. It will hopefully bring them a little Christmas joy, and maybe encourage them toward random acts of kindness as well.

I want to make some sort of poster to hang on a wall, with the list of what we are going to do, and let the kids cross the items off as we do them. I don't know why exactly, by my kids LOVE to make lists and cross things off.

So far some of the ideas I have come up with, or come across are:

Bring hot cocoa to the salvation army bell ringers.
Tape candy canes to vending machines and ATMs.
Hand out candy at the post office.
Leave small treats in shopping carts at the grocery store
Visit the ASPCA. Pet the animals and bring treats to the workers.
Bring candy/cookies to the cashiers at our local grocery store.
Bring small toys/treats to the kids in mall play areas...(And the moms!)
Hand out flowers in the grocery store.
Bring treats to people waiting in hospital ERs.
Bring candy to the employees at the library.

Then on Christmas Eve and Christmas visit a store that is open and bring treats to all the employees.

If you have any other ideas, I would love to hear them, and I would especially love to hear if you want to do it too!

Earning my blue belt was number 6 on my list of things I wanted to accomplish before I turned 30. I made that list while I was still on my BJJ hiatus. At that point, I wasn't even sure I would make it back to the mats, so putting it on the list was a little scary. I didn't want it to me the one thing I didn't get done, not to mention it being one of the most important ones. But with almost exactly 6 months to spare, I get to cross it off the list. ♥

Rest in Peace, Ray-Ray

My very first pet that was MY pet, as in, I am an adult, I live on my own, and got my first pet, pet was a cat named Shinji.

We had him for seven years. He died three days after Zaile was born. Liver failure. It was unavoidable, and even if we'd found it earlier he couldn't have been saved. My only regret is that he suffered longer than I'd would have liked. I'd just come home from the hospital with a new baby. I knew something was off, but I just thought that he was feeling put out by the new baby. It was two days after I got home that I realized something was really wrong.

We had to put him down. We were all devastated.

Three days after we buried Shinji, I took the kids for a stroller ride. When we got home there was a tiny black and white kitten sitting on the spot we buried him.... and he looked JUST like Shinji.

Micah freaked out, started screaming that Shinji came home. I had to choice but to take him in.

I thought he was a girl, and suggested we name him Rei. Rei was Shinji's counterpart in the anime we named Shinji after.

Turns out Rei was a boy, so we changed it to Ray because Micah refused to call him anything else.

This morning someone hit and killed him in front of my house within a few minutes of my having let him out. Most unfortunately, Zaile stepped out on to the porch before I could pick him up from the road. She started screaming. It was awful.

Ray was an awesome cat, and deserved better than what he got. The spot at the foot of my bed won't be the same without him.

He was a happy healthy cat, and very well loved. He will be missed!

Marbleized Fingernails

Normally I wouldn't blog about something as frivolous as painting my finger nails, but this was a fun experiment and something weird happened.... neither are really that interesting, but combined it is still a boring story. ... but I am bored.

Anyway, I paint my nails a lot... and I tend to do racing stripes or checkers... trying to do something new, I thought I would mix two colors on a plate, and roll my finger nails through it... then clean up around the edges.

So, I did it... and while I was cleaning up the mess I made on my hands I looked down at the plate I'd poured the nail polish on to... and it was dissolving... as though I had poured acid on it. I am talking about a crappy Styrofoam plate, but still... the nail polish totally melted the plate.

List Updates

I have a new item for my 35 before I am 35 list, and it is kind of a dumb one.

You know those ridiculous pictures people take of themselves jumping. Generally set on the beach. I want to do that.... because it looks like fun. While it may also be a stupid, self-involved, waste of my time... I think I will enjoy it. I do, however, promise not to make it my Facebook profile picture.

So now the 35 before 35 list is:

1. Learn Portuguese

2. Learn to Surf

3. Go to Brazil!

4. Go rock climbing.

5. Go white water rafting.

6. Take a jumping picture.

My current list has 14 things left.

1. Finish my book. - I think this is the one that is really going to challenge me.

2. Read the Bible cover to cover. - About 70% through.

3. Mini Vacation. - Still looking forward to this one.

5. Repaint my entire house. - I have all the themes and colors planned out.. I just gotta do it!

6. BJJ Blue Belt - Outside of my control....

8. Take Micah to Disney. I plan on doing 8&9 when it gets cooler out.

9. Take Zaile to Disney.

10. Take the family somewhere with snow. - Just waiting on the snow! =)

12. Host a party at my house. - No idea yet.

19. See a Josuha Radin show. - He has to come near me for this to happen.

20. Get a tattoo or piercing. - I've finally decided what tattoo to get. I just have to do it. If I don't manage to get the tattoo before I turn 30 I know what hole I shall poke in my face.

Rooster Reflections

Before I even purchased my one day old chicks, I already knew they would eventually find their way to my dinner table.

I purposefully did not name them. I planned not to get attached.

It is impossible not to get attached though. At least for me.

Chickens are really cool animals. I've sat in my yard for hours just watching them do their chicken thing. They are hilarious.

I love watching them fight over bugs they find.

I also enjoyed watching them figure out their pecking order. I can see why people would want to watch cock fighting. I absolutely find forcing animals of any kind to fight to the death appalling, but letting my chickens determine their pecking order is something else. It is what they needed to do, so I let them, and it was entertaining and extremely comical.

So when it came time to kill one of them, it was really hard for me, but it is something I wanted to learn to do, so I made myself do it... especially since it was on my list.

I wasn't sure I could do it, but I did it... I didn't realize how hard it would be. I had to focus what I was doing while I was doing it, so I couldn't break down and cry mid chicken killing. Then when he was dead I had so much work to do, I had to keep on working.

When I was finally done though, and I had nothing to focus on... I cried. Turns out no matter how you go about doing it, killing something is still killing something, and it sucks. I don't imagine that I could even get to the point where I do it often enough to be unaffected by it.

I now know that I CAN do it. I wasn't sure I could, and I wanted to learn the process. Granted, I may not need it in my lifetime, but I do feel some comfort in knowing that if need be I could do it... and I am proud of myself for being able to follow through.

I was hoping that it would teach my kids a good lesson, but I ended up teaching myself a lesson. I have a whole new appreciation for my food. It is one thing to know where your food comes from, but to work the whole process first hand, from chick to dinner is a real eye opener.

Chickens are amazing animals, and I never fully appreciated that until I had to kill one myself to feed myself dinner. Which by the way, I couldn't even eat.

I've always kind of thought, well if they are raised to become food, then it doesn't really matter... but it does matter. No matter what the purpose of the animal it doesn't take away from the fact that it is a living breathing animal full of life... and it sucks to take that away from it.

Another list item done.

By far the least fun.

I slaughtered and cleaned one of my chickens today. He is currently in the fridge waiting to be cooked.

It was pretty horrible.

I will get a sharper knife before I do it again, and I will be 100% certain that I find the artery before I cut next time. I thought I had it, but I didn't, and it look longer than I would have liked. I did learn a lot, but for the chicken's sake I wish I could have done it perfectly.

I read up a bunch on how to do it, and watched a lot of videos... but I tried to replicate this guy's doings.

The only thing I did differently was I used a milk jug with the bottom and top cut off to hold the chicken.

You basically put him in through the bottom, and pull his head out of the top. It has a handle, so it is easy to hold, and it holds the chicken securely. Props to whoever thought of that. I forget where I read it, so I can't give proper credit.

Other then the chicken not dying as quickly as I would have liked, the only other hitch was the plucking. One of two things happened. I either scalded it for too long, which caused the skin on the wings to tear quite a bit, or the fact that he is a rooster and roosters have thin skin caused the tearing. Either way, I just cut the wings off.

Kara and Allie helped. Kara held the jug while I did the slaughtering, and Allie took video and photos. So, all credit on photos to her.

She documented every step of the process, so be warned from this point on you will see blood and guts. I'd advise against further scrolling down if you have an aversion to said things.

He looks a little scrawny, but if you look at his legs, they look to be abour the same size as store bought chickens. I think it goes to show just how altered the store bought chickens are. Mine were raised free range, and totally hormone free.

What, you ask, has happened to my darling babies face?

She gave herself a makeover. Beautiful, huh?

Zaile is a very interesting child. Girly beyond reason, but she is also a merciless brute when she deems it necessary. People keep saying she is just like me, but I don't see it. lol

She has a makeup bag. I normally keep it stocked with various kind of chap stick or lip gloss. She calls it, "lippy". She has fancy lippy, church lippy, and everyday lippy.

She loves my lipstick. It is colored, where as most of hers is not. I don't let her wear it.

This recent birthday was a big one for her. She turned four, and we decided it was time for her to leave some of her baby habits behind. Big change for her.... but I told her since she was now a big girl, I would let her wear some of my "big girl lippy".

She of course chose my fire engine red lip stick. Which is fine by me as I can't wear it with my bright red hair. It looks like a crayon threw up on my head.

Anyway, a few days after she was allowed to wear the big girl lippy, she brought me her make up bag.

"Mommy look, my make up bag is empty."

It is normally filled with lip gloss. Slowly but surely she had lost all of her recent stash.

I knew she was angling for me to give her the red lip stick, but she didn't think it was wise to come right out and ask for me.

"Oh no. That is terrible." I told her.

"Do you have any make up for me?" She asked, trying to look sweet and innocent.. which by the way, she can nail.

I gave her the red lip stick against my better judgement, but made sure she understood that if she lost it, or if she put it on without my permission, it would be thrown in the garbage and not replaced.

She seemed to understand, so I put it in her purple shiny make up bag and went on my way.

Not five minutes later, I hear..

"Uhh.. Mommy, come look at what Zaile did."

This is what Micah says every time Zaile destroys something, spills something, or paints the bathroom in tooth paste.

Since I had just had a talk with Zaile about not using the lippy with out my permission, I didn't even think about it. I figured she went on one of her mess making rampages like she normally does. Coating the walls of her room, or bathroom is something she isn't allowed to touch. Toothpaste, finger paint, soap, deodorant, and in her diaper days, poop. Yes, poop. My lovely little angel used to reach into her diaper, and paint various surfaces of her room with poop. She even has the wherewithal to close her door to keep her from trouble longer. I quickly learned that when Zaile's bedroom door is closed, it means she is up to no good.

Nothing, and I mean nothing I did woked.. and I tried everything to keep her from the poop smearing, so I did the only thing I could think of... disarm her. I forced her to potty train. I can't even count the hours I sat on the side of the tub with her while she sat on the toilet.

Finally, without poop to arm herself, she resorted to finding other things to smear around. Which is such a vast improvement I almost done mind. Stripping down and disinfecting her entire room was an all day job... and I had to do it several times a week.

No amount of punishment would stop her. I've even tried giving her things to smear in designated areas to perhaps curb her desire to smear things, but it has all been for not.

Leave her alone for 5 minutes, and I promise you she will smear something on to something else.

So, back to "Uhh.. Mommy, come look at what Zaile did."

I find Zaile standing in the hall way corner, covering her face. Though, I instantly notice the red smears on her door.

"Zaile. What did you do?"

"Nothing."

"Turn around."

"But I didn't do anything."

"Turn around, right now!"

She turned around to reveal her cheeks, lips and teeth covered in red.

Which starts our normal conversation after she destroys something.

While I am talking, I walk into the bathroom to start cleaning her up.

Red everywhere. EVERYWHERE!

Coutner, toilet, shower curtain, tub, floor, mirror.

I almost wish I had a time machine to go back in time... not to stop her, but to watch her.

I don't think I could have made the mess she made in 5 minutes with a single tube of red lipstick if I had tried.

She destroy things with inhuman speed and agility.

And if you noticed in the picture, she also had time to put on eye shadow she must have swiped from me. (And behind her on her door, you can see some lipstick, and also glitter from the time she smeared glittery glue all over the walls.)

I happen to blame all of this on my good friend, Dain Hamilton.

See, while I was pregnant with her he dubbed her "Zaile! Destroyer of Worlds!"

I am convinced my little angel heard him, and took it upon herself to live up to the title.

The funniest thing about her though, is that when she not destroying my home to the best of her ability, she bends over backwards trying to help me cook, or clean. She LOVES to help me, loves to take care of things. She is a very sweet, smart little girl.

She is also surprisingly focused and determined for a four year old.

I pity the first person to underestimate her.

If I there was ever a person I knew with 100% certainty would could change the world if they wanted to.. It is her.

I wouldn't change her if I could... Except maybe the dark days of poop. I really could have done with out those.

Zaile turns four tomorrow.

I swear I was posting about her third birthday a few weeks ago!

I can not believe she is so big, in my head she is still a little helpless baby! Looking at the pictures back to back makes me realize just how much that is not true anymore.

There are no words to explain how I feel about my kids growing up. I love each and every stage of their childhood, and I am so happy to see them grow and develop into the people they are, but I would be lying if I said it didn't break my heart at the same time. I wish I had a time machine.

Things My Dog Eats

1. My chickens - Though, if I were trying to nit pick, I would have to say he just kills them, and then chews on their feathers. This is not technically eating.

2. Any human food left unattended for more than .3 seconds. It does not matter where you leave said food, Pikachu will consume it the second you turn your back.

3. Legos. Yes... those tiny little hard blocks that plunge into the soft parts of your feet when you accidentally step on them, resulting in a yelling and/or cursing involuntarily. Yeah, he eats those, and seems to enjoy it.

4. Poop. It doesn't matter if was found via a dirty diaper... a pile my other dog, cat or chickens left behind in the yard. If it is poop, he will eat it. And no, I never let him lick me, the kids if you were wondering.

5. Paper. Any and all kinds of paper.

6. Wires. Again, this isn't so much an eat as it is a chew on... and of course to the point said wire is utterly useless.

7. Glass. He chews on and shatters glass marbles. I never said he was smart.

Each item on this list annoys me to no end, but last night he found the one thing to send me into a white hot rage instantly.

My. Favorite. Shoes.

Now see, I love shoes... I do. I can openly admit I have an affinity for shoes that borders on obsession. It's cool... I don't hurt anyone with my addiction.. except I suppose my own feet from time to time. Shoe-icide can be worth it.

No amount of blistering would keep my feet out of these shoes.

However, while I still mourn the loss of the my favorite universal heels.... They went with everything! *sob* I am now faced with the arduous task of finding another pair of perfect black heels. It is hard work but someone has got to do it.

So far my front runners are:

My chickens are doing really well. No more chicken-pocalypses.

Einstein!!

We did have one escapee last night though. My dogs are naughty and like to escape my yard, and/or consume my chickens, so we installed an electric fence. Worked pretty well to protect the chickens, but kept the dogs in the yard perfectly. Until the batteries in their collars died. One of the dogs dug out of the yard last night, and a chicken followed though their escape route. I filled it in, only to realized I had 11 chickens instead of 12.

Hipster Chicken, and Rooster Face. Rooster Face was named by my three year old. He is by the way, a rooster.

I wondered around the neighborhood making chicken sounds, and gobbling like a turkey.... Why? Because for some unknown reason, that is what I do when I feed my chickens and they come RUNNING when I make that sound. No luck though.

I feel at this point I should mention I had very little to eat yesterday, and only a smoothie for dinner thanks to a fiasco at Smoothie King. Needless to day, I was ravenous come morning. While I was waiting on my coffee to brew, I checked the mail and spotted my wayward chicken.

45 minutes, and one grievous injury to myself later I once again had 12 chickens in my back yard.

Yes, by grievous, I actually meant minor scratch.

The entire time I was trying to nab my chicken my stomach was growling and I kept laughing. If I actually had to hunt for my food I would be long since dead... or at least a super feather weight. lol

In my defense though, I was trying to catch the chicken with out injuring it.

MOSQUITOS!!

For the past few weeks I have not been able to set foot outside my door with out getting swarmed by mosquitoes.

I have armed myself.

Last week I thought I found the cause of the epic infestation. A few months ago the city issued new garbage cans, so I stashed my old ones on the side of the house near the gate thinking I would use them for yard clippings and what not. They were filled to the brim with water, and looked like it had a million mosquito babies in side.

I dumped them out, poke holes in the bottom just in case I ever do that again, left them upside down, and thought the problem would be over.

False.

Still, the mosquitoes were relentless. The kids had to hide in the car when we lit fireworks.

You know Pig-pin from Charlie Brown.

Imagine the dirt is mosquitoes, and you would have a general idea of how bad they are.

Poor Zaile could not even stand on the back patio without getting attacked. One morning she stood on the patio while I fed the chickens and got 17 mosquito bites.

So, for about a week I haven't let the kids play outside at all.

Today, I saw something I see every time I set foot out my back door.

We have a garbage can next to our grill. I see it all the time, so I never pay it any attention.

It was full... and I mean, FULL of mosquitoes, and their larvae. When I kicked the garbage can, a mushroom cloud of mosquitoes flew out.

I drained it, and I went around the yard dumping out every little thing that had collected any water.

Even one of the kids toy shovels had collected water from all the rain and had mosquito larvae in it.

I hope this will be the end of the epic swarm of West Nile carrying little blood suckers.
