Hi, Jennifer here! I've been attending Bootcamp360 classes for a few months now and yes, I actually look forward to going. Let's be real though, 5:15AM is early. But as Dean always says, "No one wakes up this early if they don't want results." How true! For my part, I try to push myself when I'm there to get the most out of the time that I can. And, why not? Why waste my time? And the best part is, it's paying off.

Oooooh, The Weigh-In
I recently went for my check-in (weight, measurements, etc.)...turns out I'm only down a few more pounds. But then I saw how many inches I had lost, and wow was I encouraged. So much so, I'm really not as concerned as much about the weight number at this point. What's more, I've started a pile of clothes in my closet that I can't fit into anymore (because they're too big)! How awesome it feels to say 'too big' rather than 'too small'.

The truth is that I know I still could be doing better with some of my eating habits (this is a constant area of improvement for me). Because like I said earlier, why get up so early and workout so hard just to undermine it with poor nutrition? Overall though, I'm proud of the quality of foods we're eating now as a family (real, clean foods) and I'm happy to report that it's become an integrated part of meal time for us. At the end of the day, it feels good to know and be in control of what we're putting in into our bodies.

The Ultimate Fat Loss Program
On that note, I've heard about Dean's Ultimate Fat Loss Program to help boost weight loss for the 90-day Boot Camp Transformation Challenge. The way it works is, you eliminate carbs for a two week period and then build them back into your diet slowly. It's supposed to be a good detox and a way to get your body clean again, providing for a fresh start nutritionally. As a mom, I really relate to this as I'm sure the other moms will also. Moms, remember when our babies were just starting solids - how we would incorporate them slowly? I associate the no carb approach as a similar to that process in a way. After removing them for two weeks, you introduce carbs back into your diet a little at a time and let the body readjust instead of overloading the circuitry.

Hey, Ho, Let's Go
All of these changes and the way I feel now after Bootcamp360 make me feel like I am taking care of myself again. With all of the other things in life vying for my attention, sometimes it's good to remind myself that I matter too and to work on improving me. On that note, I'd encourage other women and moms out there not to wait any longer to feel better about yourselves. You have the chance to be a better you, not just for yourself, but for those you love.
Progress Update
We all know that in our pursuit of transformation there are two physical battlefields: diet and exercise. While many of us rise to the challenge of high intensity workouts, most of us fall down when it comes to controlling our eating habits. As I write this post, I am happy to report that I've dropped 12 pounds, reduced my body fat by almost 4 percent, have more energy and am feeling better than I have in years.

The Workout Only Spin Cycle
Today at Boot Camp 360, I happened to speak with 3 people who've attended boot camp for some time but have not really lost weight. Their physiques are certainly more toned and they have greater strength and endurance than before, but with each rep, they continue to bare the burden of (heavy) excess pounds. I understand this cycle, because for years I worked out hard and rewarded my good efforts with food. What started out as work outs to improve my body turned into working out in order to support my poor eating habits.

Boot Camp 360 Diet Resources
This time, when I started the Boot Camp 360 diet and exercise program, I dedicated myself to finally reducing my weight and improving my overall health. I swore that I would not repeat the plateau-ridden patterns of the past. To do this, I have personally relied on several of Dean and Angela's resources to help guide my diet including:

1. 'Dean Rosson Live' DVD
This is a comprehensive, 70-minute educational video that tells you what you need to know in order to change your diet and improve your results. Dean provides copies of the Live DVD for $20. To receive a copy, visit http://www.strongpotential.com/contact.html and email your request. Watch a short segment now from the DVD entitled, "Knowledge is Power" here:

2. The Strong Potential Library of Health Resources
Informative articles, fact sheets, stats and tips covering everything from eating out to fighting fat and proper hydration. Find this online resource at the Strong Potential website here:

http://www.strongpotential.com/resources.html

3. Sample 7-Day Meal Plan
To get an idea for the kind of things Dean and Angela suggest you eat, download their 7-day meal plan here:

http://www.bootcamp360.net/files/BootCamp360_Sample_7_Day_Diet.pdf

In the end we must remember that the price we pay on the gym floor is only half the sacrifice. For real results, we each have to discipline ourselves at meal time as well.

Tranformation Challenge 2010

Since starting the Bootcamp360 diet and exercise program I've become more conscious of what I eat. In addition to the diet plans and information provided by Dean and Angela Rosson, my wife Jenny and I have sought to learn more about the benefits (or detriments) of our food and how its made so that we can do as Dean always says: "Eat real food. Eat clean food."

Recently, Jenny and I caught a health segment on PBS News. It was an interview with the former Food & Drug Administrator on the topic of what we're feeding our kids and how the food industry is contributing to the overweight and weight-related disease epidemics in the US. I recall vividly how (as a person with first-hand knowledge on the issue) he made the point about how many products we consume today are injected with added sugar and fat and how our portion sizes have grown as compared to just 20 years ago. He talked about how these practices have created widespread weight gain in America, and not just that, but how a cycle of dependency upon unhealthy foods was developed. The former FDA commissioner compared the current practices of the food industry to the disgraceful practices of the cigarette industry.

Watch the PBS interview here: http://www.pbs.org/newshour/video/module.html?mod=0&pkg=16062009&seg=7

I have to say, when you read about the account of deliberate mismarketing and our food on steroids, it makes you pretty angry to think that most of us have no idea about the games being played in the supermarket (and even before that - starting in the corporate board rooms and food processing plants). Childhood diabetes, once a rare phenomenon is now rampant and very common. I heard a statistic - something like 1 in every 4 children now show symptoms of the disease.

From there we found a very informative movie called, Food Inc. If you haven't seen it before, I highly recommend it. Food Inc. is a documentary whose goal is to uncover the mystery behind how our food is made - from seed or egg to the supermarket. Most of us have no idea how the cattle or chickens we eat are raised (including why there have been so many outbreaks of deadly diseases like salmonella in recent years). Why nearly 80% of the things we buy in the supermarket today now include some form of corn product or byproduct. Why the size of chicken breasts have expanded, and how our fruit has mysteriously begun to grow in size. (For a good example, go to the supermarket and compare an organic fruit to a non-organic fruit).

If our bodies are made up of what we eat, than there are some really important things we ought to consider before feeding our families genetically modified foods, byproducts, hormones, anti-biotic injected foods and all the rest. How many of us would eat at a restaurant or allow a neighbor to cook for us if we had suspicions that the cooks were doctoring the food or serving us meats that were so polluted they had to be bleached down a number of times to ensure they were sanitary?

Watch a preview of the movie, Food Inc., by Robert Kenner right here: http://www.foodincmovie.com/trailer-and-photos.php

One of the most well-known points at Dean Rosson's Strong Potential seminars is that "Applied knowledge is power." For me and my family, it's not enough to know that we need to exercise and eat clean foods. What really makes the difference in our lives is when we actually do it. I'm proud to say that so far I've lost 9 pounds and gained back a great deal of muscle thanks to Bootcamp360. But what's more than that, I'm beginning to combat many old set-in behaviors with new information and a plenty of hard work and sweat.

Checking In.
This week marks 4 weeks since starting the Bootcamp360 diet and fitness program. While the workouts have been challenging, I've been consistent and the effort has paid off. I've had several people offer encouragement this week in the form of compliments like, "You look like you've lost weight. Have you been working out?" It feels good that my sacrifices are being noticed.

Let's Talk.
Well, as you know, last week was Thanksgiving. Like many families we had a relative visit and meaning well, prepared a few traditional, calorie rich Thanksgiving dishes (though fewer than last year). I have to be honest in saying that one meal led to another (left-overs) and before I knew it, I was back to consuming fatty snacks, desserts and overeating. What's more, that same week I faced the most challenging week of work so far this year (seriously). And it didn't stop there...for the last few weeks our family has battled seasonal sickness! Suffice to say, by the end of the weekend it was almost as if my diet was ancient history.

If you've been around the ring a few times with weight gain and weight loss as I have, than you've probably come to realize that managing food and exercise is not only about will power, but also about the emotional implications of your choices. What I mean quite simply is that I eat to reward myself and exercise typically to decompress (personally, I use light exercise for alone time and time to think and reset).

Emotional Realities.
Like you, I face the ongoing pressures of life. I must keep up with having kids, a job, night classes and volunteering on top of the daily challenges of life. I'm sure you know exactly what I'm talking about. How can you manage to take care of yourself, and at the same time, live up to your responsibilities as head of household, father, son, husband, employee, student, sibling, and the rest? Easy food feels satisfying and a timely jog helps me get out of a funk. You may not use food or exercise in exactly the same way as I do, but you probably have similar coping devices at play in your life.

The main issue with relating to food and exercise in the way I've described is that for all intents and purposes, I'm not eating for fuel or exercising for fitness. Instead, food equals relief. Exercise equals reflection time (an OK reason to do it, but not exactly effective for building muscle). Having these definitions of food and exercise mean that I can't just turn a corner, repurpose these devices and everything is OK. The need for relief and reflection remain. So, the real-world result of the decision to change my relationship with food and exercise is that I must now find other healthy alternatives for meeting my emotional needs. Eventually I'll have to commit to new behavior and ways of coping. In fact, deciding to change the physical became much more than a physical decision after all.

That is the crossroad I found myself at this week. I know that weight gain is often a symptom of emotional behavior - the effect of bad choices made over time for emotional purposes. And like any persistent behavior, my body physically and emotionally rejects the new changes and continues to gravitate back toward the familiar. On week 1, I made the initial decision to change. But now in week 4, I'm being tested on my true resolve and actual commitment to making that change. Do I really want it bad enough to face the emotional implications of my decision including not being able to use food and light exercise as therapy? Stay tuned...

To begin your own weight loss and fitness journey, consider the life changing Bootcamp360 program offered by Angela and Dean Rosson: http://www.bootcamp360.net

Post-Thanksgiving Confessions

My Motivation.
Hi, I'm Jennifer. I started the BootCamp360 diet and exercise program 3 weeks ago with my husband, Aaron. I knew when we got started that I needed a change. It’s only been 3 weeks now, but I must report that I can already tell a difference in the way I feel (and look)! The picture you see on the the left is my before picture, the one I took before starting on this journey. (I swear my bottom is higher now after just 3 weeks!) My clothes are fitting a bit better already, I've gained muscle back and I’ve lost around 4lbs. so far - even after Thanksgiving!

Last year around this same time (Thanksgiving) I was on a diet too. Back then, the motivation was to lose weight as fast as I could - especially since I had just had our second child. This time around though, my motivations are completely different. Of course we all want to look great, but now I really want to feel great! I want to be truly healthy and have energy (for my kids)! I know that if I can learn to change my relationship with food - to take control of that specific aspect of my life - and begin exercising on a regular basis, that my self-perception will change; my emotions will change; and my life will improve...Just to feel healthy again - that there is nothing that I can’t conquer - for myself and for my kids! That's what I want.

I Must Confess.
One of the hardest parts of the BC360 diet is the initial change of habits. Learning to incorporate fresh foods back into our weekly routine. Since week 1, we changed the type of foods we buy at the grocery store and I'm starting to enjoy the meals, though the prep work is still a challenge. Dean gave us some great tips on how to pre-prepare food at the beginning of the week so that when meal time arrives, all you have to do is reheat your proteins, vegetables and sides and grab some water to drink. It's really worked out so far for Aaron and I. As far as the kids are concerned, I am weaning them off of the old foods slowly. At this stage, I still prepare something different for them each night just in case, but they're starting to come around and in all actuality, they enjoy some of the new dishes we're eating. Not to mention, just knowing that you have one cheat meal with dessert each week on the BC360 diet to look forward to also helps :)

Besides the diet, I’ve been attending the exercise classes regularly as well. Exercise was not something I incorporated on a regular basis for any of my previous diets. With Bootcamp360 I have to get up super early for workouts that start at 5:15am. I know that sounds really early, and it is, but it’s actually great and totally worth it! Honestly, by the time my mind wakes up (typically much later in the morning), I realize that I’ve already gotten in my exercise for the day! What I love about Angela's classes are that they are go-at-your-own-pace. The classes are challenging for everyone at any fitness level, and even if you are like me and aren’t used to exercising, you’ll enjoy it too. It's seriously worth it when your clothes start fitting better.

After All.
I am a typical, busy mother of 2 and it’s only taken a couple of weeks to get into the new routine. There's still a ways to go and I look forward to making these new lifestyle changes permanent. I just know that if I can do it, than you can too! I take it one day at a time and try not to expect too much of myself at first. No one can be perfect, but as Dean says, “start with making better bad decisions” until you have totally weaned yourself off all the junk and begin to eat REAL food again. God never intended for us to put junk into our bodies. Like most of us, I want to be the best I can be for Him. I'm sure you feel that way too.

The Transformation Begins.
This week my wife and I started the weight loss and fitness program by Dean and Angela Rosson known as Bootcamp360. After attending a live session with Dean at First Redeemer Church where he spoke about the urgency of health and it’s impact on not only lifestyle, but severe health related illnesses and disease, I decided it was time to change the family legacy, if not for myself, than for my two kids.

In that meeting Dean skillfully deciphered tricky food labels, debunked common myths and got down to brass tacks on how we live and the psychological, physical and emotional impact of our poor decision-making when it comes to food. Some of the topics I found interesting were:

What we’re consuming versus what we we’re built to consume

The deathly serious impact of sugar on the body – a rampant additive in modern foods

Life experienced from a carb dependency versus one based on nutritional balance

The pitfalls and pot holes (also known as marketing tricks being played) in the grocery store

These topics and more made me go home, re-evalutate and and take a serious look in the mirror.

No More Excuses.
Last week my wife and I made our first trip to the grocery store using the specific strategies outlined by Dean during the live session and reinforced in his informative video “fit2win Live”. Advice like:

REAL food (the stuff that’s been considered as such for 1000’s of years) is typically found on the outside of the supermarket.

The healthy basics (usually less popular) are often found on the top or bottom shelves

Fresh, prepared over frozen or processed

In fact, just say NO to processed foods, preservatives, chemicals, flavoring, pasteurization, etc. whenever possible.

And several others…

These tips helped us focus on REAL foods and preparations. They helped us ensure that we wouldn't unknowingly rob our bodies of vital nutrients or blast our systems with additives primarily designed to extend shelf life, not for consumption.

The Dreaded Initial Photo & Weigh-In.
Yes, my wife and I took what I like to call our FAT pictures (like the flattering one you see above). We weighed in and Dean did a full examination of our food diaries (everything we’d eaten over the past week). Watching his inspection I wasn’t sure what exactly he was looking for:

How many sweets we’d eaten? NO

How many vegetables we'd consumed? NO

Did we drink enough water? YES

How much protein was in our diets? YES

In fact, Dean was adding up the grams of protein we'd consumed comparing it with our healthy carb and fat intake. With this information, he came up with a simple and very helpful chart to explain the proper ratio of Protein to Carb to Fats.

That Ratio is 60/30/10.

When active, Dean recommends our diets to be made up of 60% protein (due to the body’s natural regeneration process).

30% high quality carbs, necessary to support daily activity. (RULE OF THUMB – only eat for your next activity!)

10% good fats (not the stuff hanging off the side of the steak)

For the weigh-in we also recorded our Body Mass Index (BMI), overall Body Fat % and (interestingly enough) our current pant size. Rather than focusing on the scale, Dean suggests marking progress based upon how well you fit in your clothes.

What a refreshing and transformative approach to weight loss and fitness!

My transformation has begun. Through this weekly blog you'll be able to follow me through my workouts, weight loss and complete Bootcamp360 transformation. Start your journey now and share your own Bootcamp360 experience. I'm looking forward to your comments and encouragement.
