This past Friday, I attended the Carousel’s dinner theater production of The 39 Steps.

Five very talented actors and a pianist but on an energetic, comedic version of the Alfred Hitchcock thriller that was non-stop action. And when they weren’t acting, they were serving and clearing our dinners. Amazing!

The Carousel Theater, seeing that the forecast is for rain, is offering $5 off this Wednesday, August 7th’s matinee. See this flyer for more details (and mention the flyer when you reserve):

Coastal Coffee Shops

I’m frequently driving between Portland and Boothbay. Lately, I’ve been in the habit of stopping along the way at one of my favorite coffee shops/bakeries to do some work with a change of setting. Below are my favorites that are not far off 295/Route 1 and that offer reliable WiFi:

Treats, Wiscasset

Coffee by Design
1 Diamond St, Portland, ME 04101
Just off 295’s Exit 7 in Portland. It’s a large industrial space with parking outside, great coffee and baked goods.

Maple’s
881 US-1, Yarmouth, ME 04096
The best bagels in Maine. And a bunch of other tasty baked goods as well. An inviting place to work with extra seating in the back room as well. Exit 17 off 295.

Little Dog Coffee Shop
87 Maine St, Brunswick, ME 04011
Just off Route 1 on Brunswick’s Maine Street. Plenty of seating and a variety of coffee and baked good options, as well as more substantive breakfast and lunch options. 2-hour street parking available at no cost.

Frontier
14 Maine St, Brunswick, ME 04011
Also just off the other side of Route 1, on Brunswick’s Maine Street. Frontier offers a full restaurant, movie theater and event space in the back of the Fort Andross building. Just as you enter Frontier on the left is a more casual coffee shop with innovative lattes, candy, baked goods and pre-made sandwiches. There are a few designated parking spots for Frontier in the back of the building.

Café Crème
56 Front St, Bath, ME 04530
Coffee, smoothies, sandwiches, baked goods…my favorites are the stuffed croissants. $1 off your coffee if you bring your own mug. Just a block off Route 1, 2-hour street parking outside.

Treats
80 Main St, Wiscasset, ME 04578
This inviting specialty foods shop and café is housed in an 1800s brick building. They sell gifts, wine, cheese, prepared foods, baked goods, sandwiches and a whole lot more. There’s a large table in back to work from and some seating by the windows as well. On the right-hand side of Route 1 as you’re headed northbound, right in the center of Wiscasset.

Footbridge Brewery Opening Memorial Day!

I am beyond excited that the long-awaited Footbridge Brewery will be opening its doors Memorial Day weekend. Aptly named, the brewery is just at the downtown end of the iconic 1901 footbridge.

I got a sneak peak of the space this week. It’s going to be gorgeous. And the owners, Dan and Pnina, have a number of fun ideas planned for what is sure to be a new favorite gathering place for the local community, not just visitors.

I also got a sneak taste of the brewery’s classic IPA and it’s delicious. I can’t wait to try their other creations.

The brewery will be open year-round noon – 8pm. They won’t serve food but there are plenty of eateries nearby.

The best part? Google Maps says it’s only 141 feet from home. I’d say that’s walking distance.

Portland is the Best!

In case you need another reason to visit Portland (hopefully on your way to or back from Boothbay Harbor), here you go: Portland beats out every New England city on list of best places to live!!

I’m looking to rent my 2-bedroom condo in Portland’s Old Port from May 23-July 9, 2019. Please help me spread the word!

Portside Renovations Complete!

I planned some improvements for Portside this year, and some of the renovations–for better or worse–were expanded or sped up after a pipe broke upstairs. Luckily, this all happened in January/February when things are pretty quiet in Boothbay!

The biggest change is a brand new master bathroom shower with a Grohe faucet and rain shower:

Other changes to Portside include:

New countertops for both bathroom sinks
A new deck door with a screen to enjoy the ocean breeze
Heat pumps/air conditioning(!!) units in the master bedroom and den that will keep the whole unit cool in summer

Mumbai to Maine

Last week, I attended the sold out premier of Mumbai to Maine, the first episode of a 6-part series to come, created by culinary artist and Mumbai-turned-Boothbay resident Cherie Scott, director Ryan Leighton and cinematographer Cody Mitchell, and with the participation of one of my favorite local shops, Eventide Specialties, as well.

It was a fun evening of (Indian) food, music and listening to the stories of the show’s creators. So many in the community came out to support the project. A special thanks to all the restaurants who contributed!

The pilot begins to tell Cherie’s unique story and the magic of the Boothbay community. It’s a wonderful narrative but it’s also worth watching the pilot even just for the beautiful shots of Boothbay Harbor.

Gardens Aglow Starts November 15th!

Damariscotta Pumpkinfest!

For years, I’ve been wanting to check out Damariscotta’s festival of the year, Pumpkinfest. This year was finally the year!

Pumpkin regatta (and good example of a Maine accent)

I caught the parade on Saturday, the pumpkin drop on Sunday and the pumpkin regatta on Monday. And of course I was able to admire all the painted and decorated pumpkins lining Main Street.

You might be wondering what is the pumpkin drop? The pumpkin regatta? Well, the drop is where they haul a 1000+ pound pumpkin high up on a crane and then drop it! Splat! The regatta involves hollowing out a giant pumpkin and racing it as a boat–by paddle or motorboat. Normal, right?

The article offers some great suggestions for a quick visit to the region, including Robinson’s Wharf, The Boothbay Craft Brewery, Two Salty Dogs, the Village Store, Southport General Store, Hendricks Head Beach and Hendricks Head Lighthouse, Sweet Bay, Enchantments, Mine Oyster, Red Cup… and of course the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens!
