The Lego Ninjago Movie reinvents the long-running cartoon / toy commercial for Lego ninjas with a voice cast of comedy all-stars. It’s lots of fun and fits in well with the Lego movie universe. Kingsman: The Golden Circle is loads of fun, and an even more serious spy movie than its predecessor. Julianne Moore is a great villain. Sir Elton John! Not as good as the original but still great.

A great movie and a horrible movie with special guest Rich Bonaduce! as we review Transformers: The Last Knight and War for the Planet of the Apes. An inexplicable plot. Stupid action. All characters are stupid. British Megan Fox has a PhD and will remind you about it, but she just needs a man. Mark Wahlberg just needs a woman. Convenient. It’s all so terrible, and so boring. But War for the Planet of the Apes is the anti-Transformers: smart, fun, and has something to say. Great blend of summer action and thoughtful message. We need a palate cleanser– too bad everyone else has to wait until July 14 to see it.

Weird mediocre week with shark movie 47 Meters Down, raunch-com Rough Night, and Cars 3. Drink every time someone mentions The Bends and you will die. Not enough sharks (or scares) in this shark movie. Stupid ending. Rough Night is about women, but in the end the insecure fiance is the hero? Should’ve been more funny given how great the cast is. Cars 3 is terrible for the first hour, then gets kinda good. We spoil the hell out of it, so beware. You can read the written form of Andy’s comments here. The short Lou before the movie is the best part. That we don’t spoil because it’s beautiful.

The first two of those are great, the last is terrible, but if you’re reading a review of it you don’t care anyway. 50 Shades is not sexy terrible fanfic, abuse masquerading as kink. John Wick delivers on expanding the world of the original and a rare sequel as good as the original. Lego Batman is an amazing homage to previous Batmans and boasts the most amazing supporting cast ever. Why can’t the rest of the Warner Brothers comic movies be this good?

While the regular box office brought us more dreck in Gold and A Dog’s Purpose, Sundance delivered some good films to compensate. Gold is boring and long and predictable. There’s no excuse. Also no excuse for animal cruelty in A Dog’s Purpose, but if you can get over that and don’t mind emotional manipulation, it’s barely mediocre. XX lets the ladies take on the horror anthology subgenre, and it’s mostly pretty good. Meanwhile The Discovery explores life after the verified existence of an afterlife. The Yellow Birds was one of the best things Adam saw at Sundance– our young Han Solo is amazing.

Bad Moms – When good moms decide to blow off all the things they do to keep their kids’ lives running, this is what happens. Also musical montages. Kathryn Hahn and Christina Applegate steal the movie. Adam gives it 8/10 and Andy went a bit lower at a 6.5/10 for not being as cohesive as it could’ve been, and his longer review is here.

Batman: The Killing Joke is the adaptation of the 1988 graphic novel and it is a beautiful translation of the source material to screen. But it still retains a lot of its problematic elements and the tacked-on first act doesn’t help. We go really in depth on this, and this is a longer opinion article by Andy, but both agree this is a 7/10.

Jason Bourne has Jason Bourne in it! And shaky cam! And questionable depictions of technology! And ridiculous car chases sponsored by Dodge Charger! But Matt Damon and the rest of the cast are great. This isn’t as good as the first two, but better than the most recent one. 7/10 and a more full review here.

The Infiltrator is the story of Robert Mazur who went undercover to follow the money of Pablo Escobar’s cartel in the 80’s. A true story! And great acting, but the pacing kinda drags. Adam gave it 5.5/10, Andy gave it a straight 5.

Ghostbusters! We’ve waited so long and were not disappointed. No one’s childhood was ruined. Everything is great, especially Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. Stick around for the aftercredits sequence, and see it in 3D on Imax if you can! Adam calls it a perfect 10. Andy was bugged by a couple of pieces of fanservice and product placement, but otherwise it’s perfect: 9/10.

Don’t listen to the cynical critics about X-Men: Apocalypse, which is out this week and Andy and Adam previously gave a 7 and an 8 to, respectively. Did you not hear that episode? Stay a while and listen!

Alice: Through the Looking Glass – The Hatter is Madder and only Alice can help him. Time Travel. It looks nice! Johnny Depp’s vocal affectation. Sacha Baron Cohen’s accent. Adam is meh on it and gives it a 5. Andy holds all time travel movies to a higher standard and gives it a 4. Brooke says we’re entirely too harsh and kids will love it and gives it a 6.

Also don’t forget that the Sundance movie The Lobster is out this week in theaters– but you can also catch it at home on video on demand or dvd if you’d prefer that. Adam gave it a 7, and if you’re complaining about Hollywood not doing enough original, then go support this.

Worst to first means we start with Angry Birds. We don’t need this much backstory. Bright, colorful, and definitely Angry Birds, but that doesn’t make it a great movie. Andy gives it 3/10 and has a more full review here.

We drastically disagree on Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising. Andy thinks it’s a bit been-there, done-that for the main storyline, but it adds a layer of social commentary and a nice heart that is excellent. Adam says this movie is everything that is wrong with America. It’s basically Donald Trump in movie form. We have dueling reviews here (Andy’s positive one- 7/10) and here (Adam’s negative one- 1/10).

What we both agree you should go see is The Nice Guys. It’s very Shane Black-y. Gosling and Crowe are both having a blast here. It’s the little details in the script that really make this work. Both of us give this a 9/10 and Andy has a more full review here.

Ghostbusters. Choosing which movies we see and review. Is the Angry Video Game Nerd a film critic? No. But he has 2,000,000 Youtube subscribers! “Well, actually…”

(Andy would like to apologize to Kim Kardashian for a factual misstatement on the podcast for underestimating her age. With a birthdate of October 21, 1980, she will turn 35 a whopping 18 days before Election Day, November 8, making her 2 1/2 weeks being Constitutionally eligible to be our president. You go, girl? I guess.)

Money Monster should have been more exciting. Script is kind of boring and never delves into why we should care. Unlike The Big Short, which had Margot Robbie in a bubble bath to help explain boring finance and economics. Andy doesn’t remember Selena Gomez’s name. Adam gives it a forgettable 5/10. Go watch The Big Short and Hail, Caesar! instead.

X-Men: Apocalypse is the third movie in the rebooted X-Men universe. Plays out a little like a Greatest Hits but is still incredibly fun. That Quicksilver scene, though. Apocalypse is a boring villain who’d rather fuss over costumes Tim Gunn style than actually be menacing. Wasted opportunities with great characters and great actors.

All 10 heroes get a character arc. The quiet, talky moments in between the action. The comedy tempers the depressing parts. The Empire Strikes Back of the MCU.

Mother’s Day is awful. Don’t let your mother or any other human close to it. 2/10 because the actors are all very charming and talented and deserve better material. Andy’s more full review here.

Green Room is amazing. A story of punk rockers vs. neo-nazis with murder and evil Patrick Stewart. It follows a sort of horror movie pattern, but it’s incredibly inventive and fun. Adam is in love with this. It’s a 10/10.

Sing Street is another film by John Carney (Once, Begin Again) and if you liked those you will love this too. Set in Dublin in the 80’s its soundtrack is full of classic 80s songs. Boy meets girl, boy starts band to impress girl, relationships between friends and lovers develop. Great story, great soundtrack. Andy’s favorite song and sequence from the movie:

It has a few problems (the ending is a little off) but it’s generally great. Andy’s more full review here and he gives it a 9/10.

The Boss – from director/writer Ben Falcone (also real-life husband of Melissa McCarthy) a rags to riches to rags story who ends up turning to her former assistant, Kristen Bell. Wackiness ensues, but the movie doesn’t really know what it wants to be. Why can’t they find better material for Melissa McCarthy? Strong female characters and the Bechdel test. Tyler Labine is great. How does this turn into a samurai movie for the last 20 minutes? Adam gives it a 5/10 and there’s a more full review here.

Midnight Special – go into this movie knowing as little as possible. Michael Shannon and Joel Edgerton are trying to escape somewhere with a young boy with undetermined superpowers that seemingly pose a danger both to himself and those around him. Like 80’s kid-centric sci-fi and also 60’s and 70’s social commentary sci-fi. This movie makes you work for it a little bit. Amazing performances by main cast. Great visual filmmaking. And thinks it’s possibly the best movie of the year so far. He gave it a 9.5 when he saw it at SXSW and he’s still there. Adam is close at a 9.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 we review in two minutes. It felt longer than Bats v Supes. It’s a rehash of the first one. Also, Joey Fatone is gay. Yay! Your mom will like it.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice – We love Batfleck. He is Brooke’s Batman. His training montages will be in her dreams. Maybe that’s why she fell asleep in the movie. Gal Godot is awesome. We need more Wonder Woman. But mostly the female characters are only there to further the male characters’ storylines, be rescued, etc. Action scenes are still great, and the end is fun. Adam and Brooke both give it 7/10.

Our favorite parts of FanX! Andy – Captain America:The Panel. Read his “Why I Love Captain America” and “Part 2“. This panel made Brooke a little Team Cap; Brooke makes Andy a little Team Tony.

Brooke – Non-Compliant: Feminism in Geek Culture. Awesome panel based on the idea from the Bitch Planet comic books. Brooke is definitely non-compliant.

Adam – Dr. Horrible: The Tragic Anti-Hero. So much Whedon love. Really learned a lot about these little webisodes that are a decade old.

In a Valley of Violence – a great, classic Western with modern sensibilities and a really cute dog. Ethan Hawke, John Travolta, Karen Gillan are all at the top of their game. Great fun. Andy gives it 8.5/10.

Slash – a movies set against the backdrop of teenage relationships, sexual awakening, and slash/fic– the genre of fan fiction that takes often antagonist characters and puts them in homosexual erotic scenes. While the language and content gets naughty and saucy, it rarely crosses the line and is mostly played for laughs. Also a 8.5/10

You’re Killing Me – vapid YouTube wannabe George has a new boyfriend, who it turns out is killing their friends. He’s too dense to figure it out. The script thinks it’s catty and clever, but it’s dumb. Adam gives it 2/10.

10 Cloverfield Lane – forget everything you think you know about Cloverfield. This isn’t like that at all. Character drama between the only three characters in the film. John Goodman is fantastic. Security vs. Freedom. Strong female leads. Andy and Adam are both at like 8/10, maybe 8.5.

Keanu – Key and Peele have to rescue their kitty! Funniest movie in a long time. Well paced, and it never feels like they overdo a joke. Definitely R-rated. Plays with race and social issues, but ultimately this is just about finding yourself. And a really cute little kitty. 9/10

Captain America 3: Civil War – Brooke is Team Tony, Andy is Team Cap, but this tears us apart because we agree with the other side. Who’s going to die? Underoos.

London Has Fallen is a sequel/lazy rehash of the first movie. The production delays and “creative differences.” Laughable script. Ridiculous premise. “Time of the month” jokes. A dick flick, not a chick flick. But stuff blows up, and there’s Gerard Butler, so there’s that. Brooke gives it 2/10.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot is Tina Fey producing an adaptation of a memoir of a television journalist about her time on Afghanistan from 2003-2007. It’s not a comedy– it’s real life, with real humor interjected to lighten the mood. Like M*A*S*H. Lots of talk about Afghanistan. Tina Fey delivers an amazing performance that’s both emotional and funny. Andy and Brooke both give it 7/10.

Zootopia is possibly the best movie of the year so far. A cute story about a bunny who wants to become a cop becomes “48 Hours” when she gets paired with a streetwise fox. Sooooooo much deep meaning in this movie about prejudice, bullying, etc, but maybe too much? Andy’s pancake analogy– Adam prefers waffles. Trump. Hillary. Not quite as good or straightforward as Wreck-It Ralph, but almost. Andy gives it 8.5/10, Brooke gives it 9/10 and says Andy is wrong about Tangled.

Oscars wrap-up! We were mostly right! Except that Best Picture thing. Andy’s idea about Spotlight– we need a new Oscar category for acting or “Best Ensemble” and one for “Best Special Performance in Motion Capture, Voice Over or Animation” and how it would be good for diversifying the Oscar nominees and winners.

Gods of Egypt is horrible and worthy of all the scorn heaped on it. Racist, sexist, incomprehensible, and boring. No. Just no. Andy gives it 1/10 and Brooks is afraid of what movie is worse than this: 0/10.

Eddie the Eagle is just fun. Jackman and Edgerton are just fun to watch. Somewhat predictable sports hero story, (and so 80’s!) but they sell it so well. Andy gives it 7.5, Adam and Brooks are both at 8/10.

Triple 9 is a little confusing plotwise, but so intense it’s worth it. Great acting, especially by Anthony Mackie and Casey Affleck. Andy and Brooks both give it 8.5/10

38 – Jesus, Witches, and Jesse Owens

Risen – the story of the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ told through the eyes of a Roman soldier. Wasn’t that the same plot as the fake movie within a movie in Hail, Caesar! ? Yes, yes it was. And the Coens get Jesus and the source material of The Bible far better than the makers of Risen did, especially when it turns into CSI: Jerusalem and the boring parts of The Hobbit. If you’re going to make a Jesus movie, have a point and make it clear. But it’s competently made and well-acted, so 5/10.

The VVitch – Atmospheric does not equal scary. Lame jump scares are not scary. Your actors need to not mumble their lines. But the film’s biggest problem is it is incredibly boring and has a really stupid ending. Really? That’s your ultimate bad guy? Still, it was atmospheric– the score and use of only ambient light was cool, but The Revenant did it far better. Adam gives it 3/10, Andy gives it 3.5/10.

Race – Clever title, there, movie. Still, a fun movie. Great performances by main cast, and weaves in the historical context incredibly well. We understand how bad it was in Hitler’s Germany and also for African-Americans in The United States. Joseph Goebbels and Leni Riefenstahl were played like they came from a Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoon, but Riefenstahl’s attempts to film the Olympics become almost more interesting themselves, threatening to derail the main narrative. But at its core, this is an inspirational sports movie. Andy gives it 7.5/10.

37 – How to Be Zoolander 2

How to Be Single – kinda all over the place, but its cast is charming enough to make up for it. A story of self-discovery masquerading as a screwball comedy. Adam still doesn’t like Dakota Johnson. This comes from the same writers as He’s Just Not That Into You and previously worked on Sex and the City and New Girl. It’s similar to those, but Andy compares this to Fast Times at Ridgemont High but with all the gender roles swapped. Andy has a more full review here and gives it a 6.5, Adam gives it a 5.

Where to Invade Next – if Michael Moore hadn’t directed this, we’d be celebrating it for how great it was. But it’s not as impressive compared to Moore’s other work. His presence is also the worst thing about the film, which otherwise might be really enjoyable and poignant. Still, worth watching. Andy has a more full review here and gives it a 7.

Zoolander 2 – Did we really need a sequel, even to a movie we love so much? The first 20 minutes is great, then it becomes a slog in the middle, then picks up again when Will Ferrell finally shows up. The movie doesn’t know if it’s making fun of things, or if it’s making fun of people who make fun of them. It feels a little more mean-spirited and less funny. It’s all about those cameos, though. Adam gave it a 7 and has a review here, Andy is also at a 7. Brooke was at a 5, but that opening scene with Bieber pushes her to a 6.

Hail, Caesar!– new Coen Brothers wacky comedy about kidnapping in the Golden Age of Hollywood. It’s a silly movie about deep issues set against the backdrop of a movie studio, and all of those great pictures of yesteryear that just aren’t made anymore. Andy has a more full review here and gives it 9.5 out of 10, Adam gives it a 9 out of 10.

Deadpool – It’s your typical romance – boy meets girl, boy get struck by terminal disease, boy gets superpowers to overcome disease, boy blows up the world– and should be everyone’s Valentine’s Day plan. Adam and Brooke want to go again. It’s everything that Deadpool should be, including not for children. Andy wanted more satire and more Colossus, gives it 7.5 out of 10. Brooke is at 9 out 10, Adam is 10 out of 10— it’s the most fun he’s had at the movies in a long time. We’ve got more review here if you want more talking about it.

And congratulations to Brooke’s Denver Broncos, whom she was preparing to root for during the podcast and obviously gave the edge to them.

Kung Fu Panda 3 – not as good as the first two, but still very good. Bryan Cranston and JK Simmons steal the movie. Kung Fu movie tropes and the zen existential question “Who am I?” Gorgeous animation. A longer review here, but Andy gives it 7 out of 10

The Finest Hours – the true story of the heroic rescue of the SS Pendleton, so spoiler alert that the rescue is successful? It’s Disney, so the sailors don’t swear. Chris Pine is great as the Coast Guard captain, but even better is Casey Affleck as the ship’s engineer trying to keep the ship afloat and crew alive long enough to be rescued. And then it all screeches to a cheesy halt in the last 10 minutes. Fuller review here, Andy gives it 7 out of 10.

Lo and Behold: Reveries on the Connected World – Werner Herzog’s 10-part documentary on the history of the internet, and where we’re going. Good, but lacks a through line. Werner Herzog impressions.

Newtown – the effects of the Sandy Hook shooting. Incredibly emotional what these families are going through, including the families of survivors dealing with the guilt as their friends and neighbors go through the pain. 9/10

Project Avalanche – foudn footage movie about faking the moon landing, featuring Stanley Kubrick via cleverly edited on-set interviews during 2001.

The Sundance acquistions, where they’re going, the Birth of a Nation record-breaking deal, more on #OscarsSoWhite and the SAG awards– how streaming is giving black actors more opportunity.

Anamolisa – directed by Charlie Kauffman, produced by Dino Stamatopolous (nee “Starburns”), this should’ve been better. Very overwhelming. Its basic conceit isn’t well-communicated — there’s only two people in the world, the main character and everyone else, who all look and sound the same. . . .until he meets Lisa, who is an anomoly (Anaomolisa… get it?) Too trite, navel-gazing and precious for its own good. Technically amazing. Puppet sex! But better in Team America? Andy gives it 6/10, Adam gives it 5/10.

The Revenant – Iñárritu strikes gold again. DiCaprio’s acting. That bear attack, tho. The atmosphere of the film will make you feel cold. Andy really liked it but was nitpicking and thought it was a little overhyped: 7.5/10. Adam thinks it was awesome and it’s in his top 10: 9/10.

Sundance movies! The worst: Greasy Strangler – no, you are NOT John Waters. The best: Other People. Will make you laugh and cry. Jesse Plemons and Molly Shannon are both amazing. The Lobster and Norman Lear: Another Version of You (documentary) – also very good!

Carol – Not sure how this got so many Golden Globe nominations as Andy almost fell asleep in the theater. This film should’ve been more interesting. More full review here, Andy gives it 4/10.

Joy – The somewhat true story of Joy Mangano, the inventor of the Wonder Mop and pioneer of home shopping TV. We wanted the second half to be the happy part. Adam gives it a 5/10.

The Big Short – How do you make a movie about the financial collapse not depressing and boring? Get the guy who made Anchorman to write and direct it. All the actors are great. It’s good, not subtle. Andy gives it 8.5/10 and there’s a more full review here.

The Hateful Eight – Tarantino made an amazing western! If this sounds appealing to you, try to see the 70 mm version. This might be the best movie of the year for Adam. Andy has a few issues with it, but he feels bad nitpicking a film he loves so much. Adam gives it 10/10, Andy gives it 8.5/10.

Macbeth is bloody, violent, dirty, sexy, and altogether not Macbeth. The performances are good, but they tried to change this so much and focus on big overt things like battles, it just didn’t gel and didn’t “get” the source material. Andy gives it 4/10.

In the Heart of the Sea has the same problems. Why make this movie when you could’ve just made a great Moby Dick movie? There’s no excuse for this to be as boring and padded as it is. Andy gives it also a 4/10.

Return of the Jedi is not just the movie we grew up with, but it’s a movie that grows up with you. Changes in the Special Editions. “No!” Grey Jedi. Star Wars comics. Klaatu Barada Nikto.

Krampus – If the idea is appealing to you of an evil cloven-hoofed Santa demon punishing a family of sociopaths who are like The Griswolds^10, then you might like this movie. Andy gives it 5/10.

Trumbo – Hollywood’s best writer gets blacklisted, starts writing under other names. The Blacklist and why it was so terrible. The actors in this. Louis CK. Joan Allen. John Goodman. Helen Mirren, Alan Tudyk. ALL amazing. And Bryan Cranston is beyond phenomenal. Andy gives this a 9/10.

The Empire Strikes Back – Andy thinks this is the greatest movie of all time. Adam thinks it’s up there, and it’s the best Star Wars movie. An even weirder movie than Star Wars– it plays backwards. John Williams. Boba Fett. A strange birdwalk about Ewan Macgregor and Michael Fassbender and their. . . ahhem. . . Han Solo and the Princess. That Carbon Freeze sequence tho. Willrow Hood!!! Oh, and Lando, I guess.

Mockingjay Part II – It’s the final Hunger Games movie! Everyone gets a moment to shine. We forget Jennifer Lawrence can actually act. You finally won me over, Josh Hutcherson. Veteran actors Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Donald Sutherland, Julianne Moore all shine. Has too many almost endings — like Return of the King. 7.5 out of 10.

Victor Frankenstein – This cast could read the phone book and it would be entertaining. They should’ve stuck to reading the phone book. More style than substance. Why was this released at Thanksgiving instead of Halloween? 5 out of 10.

The Good Dinosaur – It’s a “A Boy and His Dog” movie. Except with a dinosaur and the dog is a little human. Jaws references. It turns into a Western with Sam Elliot. Sure to be a crowd pleaser but Pixar is usually capable of more than just pretty animation and a good story. We expect more. Andy gave it 8.5 out of 10 and Adam gave it 7 out of 10.

Creed – Watch this review by Scott Stapp of Creed. It’s a Rocky movie! And almost exactly what you’d expect. Maybe a little long. Maybe too many training montages. But the last few minutes are amazing.

Secret in Their Eyes – A counter-terrorism taskforce in LA post 9/11 is shaken by the rape and murder of Julia Roberts’ daughter, and the guy who likely did it slips away for various reasons. 13 years later, still haunted by this, Chiwetel Ejiofor thinks he has tracked him down and they’re going to get him this time. The story unfolds on two tracks, brilliant storytelling, and a great ending. Even better acting. A romantic subplot between Ejiofor and Nicole Kidman. 7.5 out of 10.

The Night Before – a crazy, raunchy comedy from Seth Rogen which includes shenanigans and cameos. Do not take your children to go see this. Fun holiday movie otherwise. 7.5 out of 10.

Spotlight – the true story of how The Boston Globe’s investigative team “Spotlight” uncovered the truth about the priest sex abuse scandal in Boston. All the acting! The Michael Keaton renaissance. Great script. Comparisons to All the Presidents Men.

We neither bash on nor are apologists for the Star Wars prequels. We can point out calmly and rationally what we like and dislike. How the novelizations ruined us. George Lucas needs someone to tell him no.

Love the Coopers – a Christmas movie about a family. And they’re all “wacky”– no, they’re just awful. And the dog narrates it? 0 stars. 0/10. The worst movie of the year.

My All-American – Plays more like a made-for-tv movie they would show to people to try to recruit them to come to the University of Texas football program. From the writer of Rudy and Hoosiers, so you can guess where this is going. Andy re-enacts the opening scene featuring a doe-eyed reporter from The Daily Texan student newspaper and old coach Aaron Eckhardt in old man makeup. We hate to call your life a cliche, Freddie Steinmark, but. . . Still, not terrible. Just not great. 4/10.

The 33 – True story of the Chilean miners trapped below ground. Should’ve been more heroic, but was mostly just boring. There’s still a few good things in here. 5/10

The Peanuts Movie – It’s certainly a Peanuts film. Totally nail the vibe, the characters, the voices, and even how disconnected a lot of the little vignettes are from one another. Inclusion of two modern songs is jarring and out of place. Otherwise a lot of fun for folks who like Snoopy and Co. Adam gives it 7/10, Andy gives it 7.5/10 and a more full review here.

SPECTRE – This is Bond’s 24th outing, and possibly Daniel Craig’s last. Can basically be summed up as: “Not as good as Skyfall.” Andy enjoyed all of the homages to previous Bonds. They basically failed to really develop any of the villains. But dem Bond girls, tho. Adam give it 5/10, Andy gave it 7.5/10 and you can see a more full review here.

Better know a Bond movie:

Adam chose Goldeneye. It was his first Bond movie, plus that epic N64 game! Sean Bean as the villain. Famke Janssen as Xenia Onatopp.

Andy chose Skyfall because penance– his original review was ho-hum about it, but he blames having had to watch an internet screener on a tiny laptop. But he came around, including it in his top 10 movies of 2012 after seeing it on a big screen multiple times. IMAX. That theme song.

33 – Our Brand is Boring, Burnt Crisis

Burnt – Bradley Cooper channels Gordon Ramsay, and you would’ve been better watching 2 episodes of Hell’s Kitchen. This is instead like the food it’s about: overwrought and fussy, rather than being bold and powerful. Andy has a more full review here, but [spoiler alert] he gives it a 4/10.

Our Brand is Crisis – In a movie about politics being a fun, contact sport, why you gotta be so boring and uptight? We need more Billy Bob. Spoilers about the ending, but mostly that the ending is awful. Andy’s more full review here, he gives it a 5/10, Adam gives it a 3.5/10.

Truth – If you’re going to call your movie “Truth”, you better bring it. This did not. Don’t cast Robert Redford as Dan Rather. Don’t make a movie about such an interesting event and make it so boring. Don’t take such a talented cast and make them boring. Just don’t. Andy’s more full review here, but he gives this a 3.5/10.

All three of these movies are a little bit boring, so we recommend better movies of the same type: Wag the Dog and Primary Colors, both of which came out within a year of one another and are both kinda sorta about Bill Clinton era politics.

Jem and the Holograms – Who is this movie for? Not Jem fans. Not the rising generation. Not a bad film, just not a very good one. And not really a Jem movie. And why did it turn into The DaVinci Code and a heist movie for 30 minutes? Andy gives it 5/10

Rock the Casbah – This movie doesn’t know what it is or where it’s going. Pick a theme and go with it. Bill Murray tries to do some schtick and it’s somewhat entertaining, but not enough to carry the movie — only one or two legitimately funny moments. Adam gives it 4/10, Andy 5.5/10.

Steve Jobs – It’s a Shakespearean Drama in 3 acts– and it’s just like Julius Caesar isn’t the history of Caesar’s death. So very Sorkin-y. Fassbender disappears into the role of Steve Jobs. And Seth Rogan can act! Who knew?!? Adam gives it 9/10, Andy 7.5/10- great movie but maybe not for all audiences.

Andy’s recommendation: Disney!! The Black Hole!!! Scary scientist! Cute robots! SUPER Scary robot! Trippy ending.

Adam’s recommendation: Horror Comedy!! Tucker and Dale vs. Evil! Hillbillies get mistaken for ax murderers, college kids keep accidentally falling into wood chippers, etc. Super gory and also just really funny.

Beasts of No Nation – released in theaters and on Netflix the same day, this is a story about child soldiers in Africa starring Idris Elba. Go check it out in a local cinema if you want to cry in a theater, or on Netflix if you want to cry at home. Andy gives it 6.5/10

Bridge of Spies – Tom Hanks in a Spielberg movie written by the Coen Brothers, and it’s some of their best work ever. Our review at Big Shiny Robot every single person gave it a 10/10. Yes. It’s that good.

Goosebumps – Based on the books, this is almost more fun for adults than the kids, it includes all the monsters and stories we love and remember. Jack Black is even restrained! Adam has a more full review here and gives it 8/10

Crimson Peak – Sooooooo cool to look at! Absolutely gorgeous. And then it gets Game of Thrones-y. Andy’s full review is here, he gave it a 8.5/10, and Adam gave it 9/10.

19 – I got 99 Homes but a Pan ain’t one

Pan – a bad prequel that doesn’t do what a prequel is supposed to do. Pan doesn’t even get his powers until the last five minutes. Why are the pirates singing Nirvana? Why is Rooney Mara a native princess? This was five different movies cobbled together and it gives you whiplash. Andy gives it 4/10 and a more full review here.

99 Homes – Andrew Garfield and Michael Shannon act the hell out of this movie, but it’s not quite Spider-Man vs General Zod. It’s better. It’s a little date, but all the performances more than make up for it. Andy gives it 6/10, Adam gives it 8/10 and you can read more here.

Quickly, Stonewall: If you’re going to call it Stonewall, actually make it about the Stonewall riots. It had as much to do with the Stonewall riots as Stonewall Jackson. But not a terrible movie. Roland Emmerich shows restraint? 5/10

Sicario: Benecio del Toro. Not too early to start talking Oscars. Incredibly tense. It’s like Apocalypse Now or Full Metal Jacket but with the drug war instead of Vietnam. Andy gives it 7.5/10, Brooks says 8 just for the performances.

The Walk: About a real-life walk between the World Trade Center towers on a tightrope. First hour is a little slow, but that last part with the actual walk between the towers is amazing. The accent. Matthew Lillard as Shaggy. Like a 6/10. Go watch Man on Wire, the documentary about the same event.

The Martian: One of the best movies of the year. Makes you feel good about things. Science! Exploration! The movie vs. the book. Ridley Scott. Everyone is at a 9 or 10.

It’s October, so we’re recommending Halloween-themed movies every week with a different theme chosen by you, the listeners. This week, it’s “Supernatural movies.” eg, demons, devils, etc.

Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials picks up where the last one abruptly ends. Tried so hard to be the epic, dark, character-driven second episode in the trilogy but fails. It’s overstuffed. But at least it’s a vast improvement on the first movie. Andy gave it 3.5/10.

Black Mass tells the story of Whitey Bolger’s rise as the biggest crimelord in America. This is Johnny Depp’s movie. Amazing performances, but maybe tries to humanize him too much. This could’ve lost 20 minutes and been great. 8/10

Everest – the Utah pronunciation of the word “mountain.” It’s a disaster/survival movie, except real. Amazing cast. Kiwi accents. Andy wishes it was more like Jon Krakauer’s book, gave it 5/10. Adam loved it, despite a first half that needed to pick up the pace, gave it 7/10.

The Visit had potential, and even has some good parts in it, but it’s clunky and has a trite ending. What happened to M. Knight Shayamalan? Adam gives it 4/10 – you can read his full review here.

Sleeping With Other People is When Harry Met Sally for a-holes. Moustrap. Best use of David Bowie ever. We generally hate Jason Sudeikis, but he is awesome here. Andy loves Allison Brie. Adam gives it a 8.5, and Andy gives it a 9.

Political correctness. What’s the deal? Why you can’t have sacred cows. Context matters more than content. Here’s two incredibly offensive movies that we love:

Adam’s pick: Team America: World Police skewers all sides of the political spectrum. With puppets! That soundtrack.

Andy’s pick: Undercover Brother turns race relations on its head. There is an actual The Man and he’s keeping black people down, so here comes Undercover Brother and The Brotherhood, now with white intern Lance because of affirmative action! So many offensive jokes.

No Escape – Owen Wilson, Luke Bell and family try to escape from violence-plagued unnamed country following an anti-Western coup. Intense, but unsatisfying. Technically well-done, but doesn’t let you breathe. Violence is over the top, Asians are treated like zombies. Pierce Brosnan’s heavy-handed political rant and Deus Ex Machina. Adam gives it 3/10, Andy gives it 4/10 — all of that is for Lake Bell. Andy’s full review here.

We Are Your Friends – Zac Efron wants to be a DJ. It’s more like a coming of age story. Great music if you like EDM. Adam gives it a 7/10. Full review here.

Soundtracks can take a movie from great to legendary. Andy’s recommendation is O Brother, Where Art Thou and Adam recommends Guardians of the Galaxy.

The Iron Giant – One of the best animated movies ever. We love Brad Bird.

Better Off Dead – (And a tribute to all the movies that came out in the Summer of 1985, especially August ’85, one of the best of which is this.) A lesser known John Cusack movie about a bad breakup. The side characters! The 80’s cliches! Happy birthday! You came out 30 years ago TODAY!

Fort Tilden won the Grand Jury prize at SXSW and there’s a reason for that. It’s hilarious and a great commentary on the whole hipster/bohemian/millenial thing. Two girls living in Brooklyn try to take a trip to the beach at Fort Tilden. And hijinks ensue. Watch the trailer. Available on Video on Demand and in theaters in limited cities. Andy gives it 7/10.

The Man from U.N.C.L.E. is Guy Ritchie’s take on the 1960’s spy tv show of the same name. He nails the period piece aspect and the stars have amazing chemistry with each other. Andy wishes it was more Guy Ritchie-y, gives it 7.5/10. Adam liked it even more: 9/10.

Straight Outta Compton is awesome, but falls prey to a lot of the same problems of the biopic genre. The “Big 3” playing Dre, Cube, and Easy-E are amazing. Why does he look so much like Ice Cube? Play another type of character, Paul Giamatti! Both Andy and Adam give this 8/10.

The Gift – Joel Edgerton wrote, directed and starred in this creepy thriller. Jason Bateman is a douche. Andy has a Fruedian slip and calls Rebecca Hall “Allison” (he was distracted by Allison Brie). Ricki and the Flash – Directed by Jonathan Demme and written by Diablo Cody. Meryl Streep wants another Oscar and she’s gonna sing! Good story for the first hour, then takes a weird twist. Why is 20 minutes of the movie Meryl Streep doing karaoke? We know you can sing– we saw Into the Woods and Mamma Mia. 6/10

Shaun the Sheep – Soooo good. Aardman Animation Studios doing stop motion. There is zero dialogue. Everything Fantastic Four gets wrong, this gets right: great villain, great character development, family, humor, adventure, and understanding the nature of your IP. 9/10. . . but with a caveat that it might only seem better because of Pixels and F4.

Fantastic Four – Adam never gives things 0, but this is awful. Andy was too bored to hate it that much, but ended up at 3/10. Movies that have a better rating on Rotten Tomatoes and if they’re better or worse than this. Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation – This is the 5th movie in the series and by no means the worst. Maybe not as good as some of the other movies. Amazing stunts. Tom Cruise — still got it. His co-stars are great, too, especially Simon Pegg. The villain is weak, though. Still, go see it on the biggest screen you can. Adam gives it 8/10 (his full review here) and Andy gives it 7/10.

Vacation – a sort of reboot, sort of sequel. Rusty’s all growed up. Let’s go to Wally World… and hijinks ensue. “Do Anything Debbie.” Special spirit son keeps playing Seals and Croft. Cameos, cameos, cameos! Chevy Chase is the worst. These guys are writing the next Spider-Man movie. Adam gave it 8/10, Andy gave it a 7/10 (his full review here).

Paper Towns – Good high school coming of age story as Quentin tries to follow clues to find Margot, but the real movie kicks in with the story about three friends going on one last adventure before high school ends. Andy thought there wasn’t anything new here not done by a half dozen John Hughes movies or Me and Earl and the Dying Girl earlier this year, plus this has obvious Millenial-pandering. Adad can forgive that because it’s still a great story about friends. Our favorite part involved the Pokemon theme. Andy gave it 6.5, Adam gave it 7/10.

Southpaw – Jake Gyllenhaal got YOKED for this movie playing boxer Billy Hope. Predictable storyline as Billy goes from on top of the world to losing it all to fighting his way back to the top, but the acting and direction make up for it. Andy gave it 8.5, Adam gives it 7.5.

Pixels – Adam hated it. Andy refused to directly review it, instead summing up his feelings with clips from other, better Adam Sandler movies. Lots of nit-picking about how terrible and lazy this movie is. A STUNT DOUBLE FOR WHAT?!?!? It’s racist, it’s sexist, it’s just awful. Adam gave it 1/10, Andy gave it 0.

Trainwreck has all of the problems most Judd Apatow movies suffer from: somebody get that guy an editor. Really funny. Amy Schumer is awesome. LeBron James and John Cena try to steal the movie. It’s a role reversal of a rom-com. Adam gives it 7/10, Andy is 6.5/10.

Ant-Man is awesome. Andy has a man crush on Paul Rudd. Funniest Marvel movie ever. This might be Brooke’s favorite Marvel movie. Michael Pena was awesome. Edgar Wright vs. Peyton Reed. Paul Rudd and Adam Mackay’s script rewrites. Hank-Hope-Scott are like a little family– and it’s going to be split by Civil War.

Garrett Morris plays Ant-Man on Saturday Night Live in 1977 – watch on Hulu. Watch for his cameo.

The Gallows – A high school play production is haunted by the ghost of a cast member who died in the same school 20 years earlier. Andy was bored the first hour, think they didn’t do a good job as a found footage movie, but liked the last 20 minutes. Likes it was done in a high school auditorium. 3/10. Adam thought they earned the found footage and loved what they did with this. He was genuinely scared in some parts and the ghost itself was super scary. 7.5/10

Self/less – What is this movie? Sci fi? Action? How did it become a chick flick for a minute? Who would enjoy this? 3/10. Andy thinks this sounds par for the course for Tarsem Singh.

Minions – The plot and lead actors weigh down the movie. Andy and Adam’s opinions diverge on whether or not you can enjoy this movie as a series of skits and gags or whether you think those are boring. Andy says yes: 7.5/10 Adam says no: 4/10

Prequels: We’re getting a Han Solo prequel– what Andy doesn’t want to see and why that’s what makes a bad prequel. Good prequels deepen character and build the world. Star Wars prequels. The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. Godfather Part II. You don’t even know they’re prequels!

Best review ever from Brooke: “Well, that’s worth the $1 rental from Redbox…” A movie about male strippers with only 4 dance scenes in it?!!? 3/10

Terminator: Genisys –

This thing gets totally retconned. Adam likes it and how it resets the timeline– like X-Men: Days of Future Past. 8/10

This made Andy’s head hurt. He’s too close to the other movies and they didn’t explain well how they were making time travel and alternate timelines worked. They missed out on exploring the coolest parts of the movie an the best part of what makes a Terminator movie. 6.5/10

Brooke’s never seen a Terminator movie, so it was ok, but she was missing something. She saw a lot of missed opportunity, especially with Sarah Connor. Did not like the ending. 6/10

Guilty pleasures!!!

Brooke: Blue Crush. It’s like Magic Mike with surfer girls and surfer guys.

Andy: Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back

It’s like the Muppet Movie in reverse. Don’t tell my wife about Eliza Dushku in a skintight leather catsuit. Mark Hammil!

Adam: Orgazmo Trey Parker and Matt Stone from South Park made a movie about a Mormon missionary who accidentally becomes a porn star. We could watch every day and laugh at it. It’s rated NC-17 for dialogue, but there is almost zero female nudity. Lot of dudes’ butts, though.

Me, Earl and the Dying Girl – 8/10 – Won ALL THE AWARDS! at Sundance. Lots of great stuff in here for cinephiles. Not a typical love story, but very touching and smart.

The Overnight – 6/10 – Lots of fake dong. This movie is the Venn Diagram of Funny + Awkward. Duplass Brothers executive produced– makes sense. Andy’s “longer” review (or is it a prosthetic?) here.

Ted 2 – Adam: 3/10; Andy: 5/10 – Seth Macfarlane is just ripping off his own jokes. Ted was funny. Ted 2 is not. Some funny nerd humor and easter eggs, but it felt a little mean-spirited. Seth Macfarlane can’t do smart political/ethical satire necessary to carry this plot.

Dope is about young Malcolm growing up in Inglewood, Los Angeles, as a self-proclaimed geek who is into “white shit” like skateboarding, Game of Thrones, manga, his trip-hop punk bank named Awwreoh! and getting good grades and going to Harvard. Through a series of misadventures, the day before his fateful alumni interview that could determine his future, he gets a bunch of drugs planted in his backpack and then is placed in circumstances where he has to sell them. Sorry for plot spoilers– that’s not the point. Lots in here about racial identity– what it means to be black and expectations based on your race. There’s also a strong commentary about drugs and how the impoverished African-American community deals with the violence and problems of delivering drugs to white folks.

Strong performances by main cast, a GREAT soundtrack (which you can stream here) and lots of laughs and real drama. 8/10

Inside Out is Disney/Pixar’s return to form after not having an incredibly spectacular movie for a while. Perfect cast. The purpose of Sadness. Bing Bong.

Ratatouille – the main message here was Gusteau saying that “Anyone Can Cook.” Remy was challenged by knowing that a critic was coming in to eat their food, and he made something to blow his mind.

Chef – Jon Favreau and Oliver Plat get into it on social media over a bad review. Chef says critic doesn’t understand how to cook. Critic says his dishes are uninspired. So chef gets fired, gets inspired with a food truck, and critic ends up wanting to financially back his restaurants. What what what?!?!

Critics are chefs’ friends– they demand more, and point out where things can be improved. What do you need to be a critic? Anyone can cook, so anyone can critic– just use critics as a lens or filter, not infallible arbiters of good and bad.

Birdman – theater critics are way mean. Why are they so broken? We wanted to like TMNT. Really. Sometimes a movie is just escapism. The law of large numbers and critic aggregation sites.

Jurassic World – It has its flaws, but we both loved it. Buy the premise, but the bit. Lots of easter eggs and nods to the first film. Maybe too many nods– and outright aping shots and score from the first one. Christ Pratt is awesome. Least annoying kids. Wasted D’Onofrio. Adam gives it 7/10, Andy gives it 7.5/10. Pitch Perfect 2 – If you saw the first Pitch Perfect and The Mighty Ducks 2, you’ve seen this movie. But it’s still pretty good. Andy gives this a 7.5/10.

Spy – Not a spoof of spy movies– an actual spy movie with comedic elements. Melissa McCarthy and Paul Feig work great together, and the supporting cast is amazing. But Feig needs an editor. Both Andy and Adam give this an 8/10

Entourage – Why? We didn’t need this movie. And there simply aren’t enough celebrity cameos and mindless T&A to make this interesting. 3/10 says Andy.

Love and Mercy – Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys, played by Paul Dano in 1967 as they’re recording Pet Sounds, played by John Cusack in the 80’s as Wilson deals with mental health issues and being dominated by his live-in therapist (Paul Giamatti) and Elizabeth Banks is there to try to save him. It’s like a lot of musical biopics, but Andy really liked it: 9/10

Our recommendations for the week, based on the theme of LGBTQ Pride:

Adam: Weekend (2011) A great story of a weekend hookup that becomes something more. Beautiful story, great acting, great direction. Immediately released as a Criterion and so deserving.

Andy: The Case Against 8 (2014) – As a political junkie, Andy loved this documentary about the court case and the couples who served as the plaintiffs to overturn California’s Prop 8. Former opposing attorneys during the Bush v Gore Florida recount, Ted Olson and David Boies are the main lawyers in this case. Olson provides a strong, conservative case for recognizing marriage equality. Truth is better than fiction. Available on HBO Go, so also check out Angels in America and The Normal Heart.

Our philosophy on movie ratings: a 1-10 scale that is essentially a Bell Curve: most movies are going to be in the 3-7 range, and 1s and 10s are truly rare and equally awful as they are spectacular. But taking your entire family to the movies and buying popcorn can be as expensive as movie ticket, so you want to choose wisely.

Tomorrowland – It’s good to go into this movie relatively blind of what it’s all about. Know that it’s a slower burn, more thinky movie. But it’s still good for kids– depending on your kids. The acting is great: Clooney and Britt Robertson are great, but the breakout star is Raffi Cassidy.

The third act has some problems, and the ending is a little preachy. Andy likes the preachiness.

Tron 3 gets cancelled. Why Adam’s mom hates Tron. The dumbing down of sci-fi.

Hugh Laurie and George Clooney on Graham Norton this week was great. Next week Chris Pratt!

Mad Max: Fury Road – the movie that shouldn’t have been made. Max is basically a feral creature, captured by Immortan Joe’s cult of War Boys and used as a bloodbag for Nux, played by Nicholas Hoult. When Imperator Furiousa (Charlize Theron) takes off in her war rig with Immortan Joe’s harem, they go after her with all the fury they can muster. And then you have a 2 hour car chase.

Remember when Warner Bros was going to let George Miller make a Justice League movie? Andy thinks this is not only the best movie of the year, but the best of the last several years– the best since the first Avengers. Tiny moments and glances mean so much. You can dissect so much of this movie. The War Boys’ religion and nerding out about it for an hour and a half.

This is the opposite side of the same coin of Tomorrowland. Both directors present visions of the future and we can choose our destiny. Is the movie about feminism? Sure, but it’s also about a ton of other issues and layered. Nux probably has the best character arc of the movie.

Go see this a bunch of times.
