Holiday Eating

This is a really quick post about food. Specifically, the best meal I had while we were on holidays last week.

Salt and pepper squid with a lime and maple dressing on a rocket, cabbage and capsicum salad. I actually don't like sweet and savoury flavours mixed together, but this was so subtle it was absolutely delicious. The squid also had also been cooked in a little bit of curry powder, so the salty, curry flavour mixed beautifully together with the lime and maple. Probably the best squid I've ever eaten.

We enjoyed this meal at a little place called Flying Fish Cafe in Port Elliot, South Australia. It's definitely worth a visit if you're ever in the area - the beach in front of the cafe is just gorgeous as well.

Monday Morning Melody - Bluejuice

I've been away for a week of R 'n' R with the lovely Boredom Abounds Husband and we had a marvelous time doing not much at all, but now it's back to real life and posting will resume as normal this week!

I heard this song a couple of weeks ago, and no matter what you think of Lana Del Ray, this cover of her song Video Games by Aussie band Bluejuice is very cool. It's sort of bluegrass-y, which (for me) was an unexpected way to go for her music. There's about ninety seconds of chatter, but once you get past that, the song it very much worth a listen.

We're off for a week of relaxation soon and I cannot wait. Whatever your doing for your weekend, I hope that today goes quickly for you and that these two videos make your Friday just a little bit better!

- Matthew Broderick is in a new Honda CR-V commercial. It's something of an homage to Ferris Bueller's Day Off - see how many Ferris references you pick up on during the two and a half minutes. I really, really want a bright red phone like the one in the video. I have no use for it, since we have three phones in our house already (not including mobile phones), but it's so shiny!

- I've always liked Kristin Bell. She's cute and she seems like a fun person to hang out with. So I loved this video of her on Ellen where she brought home video of her FLIPPING OUT over the fact that her fiance got someone to bring a sloth to their house. A SLOTH. It's hilarious. There's a bit more from after the show, too.

- Did you check out my SAG Award Fashion Hits and Misses post from Tuesday? What did you think of the red carpet fashion?

Sadly, that's it for this week. I have approximately 157,879,25871 things to do between writing this and Friday afternoon, so it's a short and sweet one.

I did not realise how close the SAG Awards were to the Golden Globes, so thank goodness Twitter alerted me to the red carpet arrivals that had just started. Otherwise I would totally have forgotten to pour over the images last night.

I suspect Rose Byrne may also want to forget everything about this look.

Rose, the 1970s called. Even they don’t want this look back.

I bet Anna Wintour is fuming and throwing three thousand dollar couch cushions around in her office at Vogue because of Rose’s copycat bob.

It's award season, yay! Oscar nominations were announced this week (I SO hope Jean Dujardin wins for The Artist - if you enjoyed his performance, you should definitely check out the OSS:117 films he's in. Think a French version of Get Smart. Hilarious). Some of these links are related to the Oscars, some are not. Regardless, I hope you enjoy all of them!

- If 2012's Oscar-nominated film posters told the truth. I think the Leonardo DiCaprio one might be my favourite.

- Vulture has a great slideshow of what some of those For Your Consideration Oscar movie posters should really say. I really wish there was a category for Best Beard.

- I get that people are sick of those Sh*t Girls/Guys/Whoever Say videos, but I kind of love this one featuring Liz Lemon. Mostly because she's a huge dork who says the kind of stuff I often think.

- So, in the States, they have the Superbowl, which is basically like our AFL Grand Final. But they also have Puppy Bowl. Here's this year's line up of players (hint: contains lots of adorable dogs!), and I just learned that the dogs are all from animal shelters and throughout the match, information on how people can adopt them is shown. Awww! And for your viewing pleasure, here are some links to past matches.

Adventures in Cooking - Choc Chip Cookie Bars

A few weeks ago we went to a little cafe up in the hills for a lovely brunch. Afterwards, we bought a couple of sweet things to bring home to have later. My choice was a choc chip and walnut cookie bar, that apparently was made with Lindt chocolate. Sounds delicious, right? Wrong. It was the driest, most tasteless thing I've ever eaten in my life. My people, choc chip anything should not be dry and tasteless. EVER.

I started thinking I could make my own version. So I did.

Behold:

Choc Chip Cookie Bars!

Ingredients

125 grams butter (room temperature)

1/2 cup caster sugar

1/2 cup brown sugar, lightly packed

1/2 teaspoon vanilla essence

1 egg

1 3/4 cups self-raising flour

1/2 teaspoon salt

125 grams good quality chocolate chips

50 grams chopped walnuts or hazelnuts (optional)

Total prep and cooking time: about an hour.

It was so kind of Madame Tussauds to loan out their Angeline Jolie wax figure for the evening.

She really adds to the formality of the occasion with her "Bitch, please" expression, no?

Yay, Friday! We don't have a lot planned so I'm hoping to get stuck into reading Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy before the movie comes out. What are you all reading at the moment?

- If you read Dooce, you will have already seen that she linked to this awesome wedding photography blog called Moment Junkie. Thing is though, it's just single shots from weddings, that amazing, special one-off shot the photographer manages to capture in a split second. You'll get lost in here for hours.

- Love books? So do these people - so much that they spent many "sleepless nights" organising the books in this bookshop to create a really cool stop-motion animation. Worth a quick look just to ogle all the gorgeous, gorgeous books.

- Sometimes Google turns up really, really weird image search results (couple of these photos are NSFW).

- The newest beauty product to take the world by storm - Fotoshop. Everyone needs to watch this, if only to remind us all that the images presentded by the media, particularly fashion magazines are TOTALLY FAKE AND UNACHIEVABLE. Scroll down the page to see the video.

That's it for now - we're watching The Untouchables and it's up to the scene in the train station on the stairs. Such a great movie.

Movie Review: The Adventures of Tintin

Tintin (Jamie Bell) is a young journalist living in a European town with his dog, Snowy. While browsing in a market one day, he spots a model sailing ship, the Unicorn, and purchases it on the spot, pleased with such a great find. Before leaving the market, Tintin has offers from two other gentlemen to take the ship off his hands for a decent sum of money, which he attributes to nothing more than a strange coincidence. When Tintin refuses, one of them issues an ominous warning that he will be cursed as long as he owns the model ship.

Back home, after a scuffle with the neighbour's cat, Snowy destroys the model ship by accident, and eventually they discover that the ship holds part of a secret that leads Tintin to Marlinspike Hall, the residence of Ivan Sakharine (Daniel Craig), one of the men who offered to buy the ship from Tintin at the market. While at the mansion, Tintin notices that Sakharine is also in possession of a model of the Unicorn and his curiosity it piqued. Returning home, Tintin discovers that his model ship has been stolen, and moments later he is shot at and abducted.

Snowy manages to track Tintin down where he's being held captive aboard the SS Karaboudjan, which has been taken over by Sakharine. As Tintin and Snowy escape, they discover the ship's captain, Haddock (Andy Serkis), a bumbling drunk with a temper who is also being held captive. Haddock reveals that his ancestor, Sir Francis Haddock, was captain of the treasure-laden Unicorn when it was attacked by pirates led by Red Rackham, Sakharine's ancestor, and sunk. It is revealed that there are three model ships that each hold a piece of the puzzle that will lead them to the buried treasure, so the trio decides to find the other two pieces of the puzzles and beat Sakharine at his own game.

Based on three of Hergé's original comic books, I think The Adventures of TinTin is one of the best animated films released in years. The plot is set up nicely and without too much laborious explanation of Tintin's backstory, so the audience is able to get a grasp of adventure-loving Tintin's life and his talent for solving mysteries as the story moves forward at a cracking pace. Tintin, with his curious nature paired with Snowy, his mischeiveous dog are a delightful duo, and once they team up with the unpredictable Haddock things become action packed.

Critics may take issue with this film for a seeming lack of humor, or sit down expecting to watch a cute, fluffy film, thus completely missing the care and attention to detail the creators have taken with this adaptation. Light-hearted and funny (particularly when the bumbling Thomson and Thompson are on screen), Tintin, Snowy and Haddock make an entertaining trio of adventurers. While the character of Tintin would have benfitted from a little more personalisation to help the audience connect with him on a deeper level, the creators can't be faulted for their faithful portrayal of such a beloved comic book character.

The animation is simply stunning - scenes in Morocco are richly layered with the most intricate details, and the characters' faces are so emotive it's hard to believe what you're watching is an animation. The film is action packed and offers viewers a rollicking good ride full of thrills, spills and a nice, old fashioned goodies versus baddies battle. It's also great to see the plot doesn't rely on a traditional male/female love interest story to hold the things together, keeping the mystery and adventure front and centre for the duration of the film. Tintin, Snowy and Haddock's journey to defeat the bad guy is all this movie needs to keep you on the edge of your seat.

While fans of the comics and cartoons from years gone by will love this spectacular update of a comic book icon, it's also a nice movie to introduce kids to as an alternative to the often formulaic Disney and Pixar films. Definitely something for the whole family to enjoy!

In a word: great

Sidenote: if you're ever travelling through the Loire Valley in France and have the opportunity to visit Château de Cheverny, the mansion Marlinspike Hall was based on, I highly recommend it. It's set on beautiful grounds, has luxurious interiors and if you time your visit to coincide with the hounds' feeding time you'll be in for a real treat!

I've never really heard much of Kate Nash's music, despite her being around for a while. But this song came on our digital radio the other day and the opening piano notes really caught my attention.

First links of 2012! These are ones I would have posted last week before New Years Eve, but we had our internet disconnected for a few days while we painted part of the house and moved the phone connection and cable points around. When I say "we", I mean "my husband" when referring to the phone and cable stuff. Obviously. They're sort of 2011 best of type of things, and they're always entertaining.

- Of course you know all about Damn You Autocorrect. Here is a list of the best 25 autocorrects of 2011. Number 12 is hilarious and creepy at the same time.

- One of the great things about Twitter is using it to tweet stuff about TV while you're watching a particular show. This list is 30 of the best TV tweets from 2011. Number 25 might be the most amusing tweet I've ever read. And there are probably a bunch of TV nerds thinking "YES. A jetpack fueled by internet rage should be a REAL THING."

- These lists from TIME for the top 10 of everything in 2011 will keep you occupied for hours. There are SO MANY lists to get lost in.

- Also from TIME, the 50 best websites of 2011. Another rabbit hole to get lost in, trust me.

I totally forgot that it was Monday yesterday, hence the lack of a music video. Also, we still had another Christmas lunch to go to, so I was kind of focused on thinking about what I was going to be eating that afternoon. My priorities: food.

Anyway, I heard this song on the radio last week and know nothing about the band except for their name and the fact that they come from Sydney.

But it's a very cool song, so have a listen!

There's something about it that makes me think of songs from the mid to late nineties that Triple J would have played.

Hey, it's Festivus! Good luck with your Feats of Strength, everyone!

It's also, you know, Christmas in TWO DAYS. This year has officially gone faster than any other year in the history of everything. Am I right?

- Take a look at the 45 most powerful images of 2011. It's been a heck of a year.

- Remeber at the start of Clueless when Cher uses that computer program to choose what she's going to wear? Yeah, that's totally a reality now. If you're challenged in the ensemble department, this app is going to make life a lot easier. Is it weird that fifteen years later I still covet most of Cher's clothes?

- Here are 79 of the best viral videos from 2011. If you're at work today, this should keep you busy. You're welcome.

- Finally, if you're like me and you haven't had time to do any Christmas baking, check out this super easy recipe I posted last December for Rumballs. They take about an hour to put together and everyone LOVES them. It's baking without the actual baking part of things.

Issy Randall is a thirty-something in London, working in an office job that does nothing for her except pay the bills. She's having a secret relationship with her boss, Graeme (well, she thinks it's a relationship - it's a bit hard for her to tell) and she spends her spare time baking and visiting her grandfather, a former baker, in a nursing home. Life is pretty....average.

Suddenly, changes are afoot in the property development office where she works and redundancies loom. But Issy knows her job is secure. She's sleeping with the boss after all. So imagine her surprise when she's called into Graeme's office and given her marching orders. Not long after that, Graeme ends their affair and leaves her jobless, boyfriend-less and totally humiliated.

Retreating to a hermit-like existence, Issy spends her time baking delicious cakes for her and her roommate, Helena, and lying in bed all day depressed and desolate. A forced excursion to an employment training seminar leaves Issy feeling even more hopeless at finding another job, and after admiring the empty little shop and sunny courtyard at the corner of her street, and idea begins to take shape in Issy's mind. Encouraged by Helena, Issy starts investigating the possibility of opening her own cupcake café, and before she knows it, she's up to her eyeballs in lease agreements and mortgage applications and building quotes.

Luckily the local bank manager, Austin, is there to help Issy along the way, and despite his disheveled appearance and equally disheveled personal life, Issy begins to feel soft sparks flying between them. As her café takes shape, we are introduced to a host of quirky and likable characters: Pearl, the unemployed single mother Issy recruits to work in the café, Caroline, the sharp divorcee who isn't afraid to voice her upper-class opinions on everything, and Grandpa Joe, who supplies Issy with his tried and true recipes. The café opens to moderate success, with word of mouth and a few lucky breaks propelling Issy and her baking into the spotlight.

While Issy works hard to establish herself in the small business world, Graeme hatches a scheme to try and win Issy back and develop the lovely little group of shops on Pear Tree Court where Issy's café is, into a group of modern apartments, with the deluded idea that she'll actually be grateful to him for selling up her dream and getting her back into an office job. Tension mounts as Austin and Graeme vie for Issy's attention, and Issy and Helena clash over Issy's choices as she works to achieve her goals, both professional and personal.

This all sounds like fairly standard chick lit fare, but there's something more personal and touching about this novel than the usual material in the genre. One of the most enticing and thoughtful touches is the inclusion of a recipe at the start of each chapter, which is then something Issy bakes or is featured in the café throughout the chapter. Not only do the recipes sound delicious and, as someone who loves to bake, I find that particular aspect of the novel extremely appealing, but there's a realness to Issy and her friends that makes the story totally relateable.

The story itself is somewhat predictable, but the author's focus on each characters' story is what sets this apart from other chick lit. The audience isn't subjected to Issy's every thought and rumination over her love life - there's a good amount of focus on her setting up the business and the day to day running of the café with Pearl and Caroline. Told in the third person, the point of view switches from Issy to Pearl to Austin to Graeme with ease, giving the reader a nice, balanced taste of life in Stoke Newington, London with all its kooky characters. It's hard not to find yourself feeling like part of the neighbourhood (and craving a cupcake almost constantly as you read)!

This book is the perfect Summer read. It's a denser book than most chick lit, and it would be wonderful for lazy days at the beach or warm nights sipping a cocktail after dinner, and I highly recommend it if you're after a good comfort read during the busy festive season!

In a word: lovely

I know, Christmas carols are everywhere at this time of year and it's so annoying.

But not this one. Because as manic and irritating carols are in a crowded supermarket or shopping centre, this one rarely gets played. It's by far my favourite carol, and it's beautiful and it sums up what Christmas is about.

Also, how many people could sing this without back up music and hit the right notes? Not many.

Chills, I tell you. Chills.

One week til Christmas! I thought I was organised, then last night I remembered one more gift I have to get, so back to the shops for me. Blarg.

But still, one week to go, and that means Christmas baking! Rumballs and gingerbread and shortbread, oh my!

For now though, here are some links to keep your Friday interesting!

- Okay, how did I not know about Shit Girls Say? You simply MUST check out this video. I am kind of ashamed to admit that I have said several of those things. Also, I may or may not crunch food really loudly. Watch the video and you'll know what I mean.

- You need to have a look at this list of twenty five things to make life easier. It's pure genius. I'm totally trying the wet wipes/plastic bag storage one. Currently I have all my plastic bags stuffed in a drawer and it's making me CRAZY.
