Boris: 100,000 apprenticeships by end of 2012

Boris Johnson is committed to growing London's economy and has already helped to create over 40,000 new apprenticeships for Londoners in just over a year. This has helped make the capital the fastest growing UK region for new opportunities.
The Mayor's apprenticeship drive, launched last November, saw Boris personally lobby some of the capital's biggest employers urging them to do their share to get Londoners back into work. But he can do more. Which is why Boris has now upped his target to 100,000 by the end of 2012.

To keep growing London's economy and build on this success the Mayor is targeting areas including financial services, digital, creative, cultural, retail and hospitality, where apprenticeships are still underrepresented compared to the size of their workforces.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson said: “As we grapple with difficult economic conditions and a tough labour market it is clear that an increasing number of employers are helping to address the problem by turning to apprenticeships as a way of supporting their businesses and developing employee skills."

Tackling crime in the capital

It is the Mayor’s first priority to make London safe and in the build up to the last Mayoral election in 2008, I was horrified by the incidents of knife and gun crime in our capital. Beyond that there was an atmosphere of intimidation and fear of young people. Anti-social behaviour and robberies blighted the lives of thousands, while the previous Mayor flippantly suggested that the media was hyping up crime up by claiming “If it bleeds it leads.”

Crime is very real and affects everyone. That is why my administration has brought new leadership to the Metropolitan Police attempts to tackle this problem head-on:

Boris pledges a wifi London by 2012

Boris Johnson today pledged to made London the world's biggest internet hotspot by 2012.
Speaking at a Google event, he claimed that 'every lamp post, every bus stop', in the capital will offer wireless internet access by the time the Olympic Games opens.
The Mayor said the plans were part of a major effort by City Hall to make London the technology capital of the world.
"Tim Berners-Lee, who invented the internet, was born in London, so we claim paternity of the internet," he told 400 of the world's business leaders at Google's Zeitgeist event in Hertfordshire.
"London is the home of technological innovation. We in City Hall are doing our best to keep up, and one of our most important projects is called Wifi London.
"Every lampost and every bus stop will one day very soon, and before the 2012 Olympics, be wifi enabled."

Sky news reports that; Boris Johnson has maintained his lead in the latest poll which shows he is the most likely candidate to become the next Mayor of London.

London is a complex city. Winning elections is just half the job, maintaining London as the capital of the world is the holy grail. Many are called, but few are chosen. The job of London Mayor comes with huge obligations that opinion polls do not take into account. Londoners are inherently obliged to rally behind a leader who can steer this great city in the right direction. After all, it's our city and we should ensure that our leader is fit for purpose.

Like any other big city, London has it's own share of crime. This will always be a challenge for any London Mayor. Crime should be be exposed. Silence and secrecy fuels criminal activities. Google Earth is a useful tool in combatting crime by pin- pointing areas rife with crime. Publishing the local crime maps would allow people to find out exactly how safe their neighbourhoods are.

Boris was right when he said: "It would be like Google Earth on your own neighbourhood - you could zero in on streets. It would make the streets safer and make people feel more confident."

I developed this mashup for the local area to promote services available. This can be adapted to show crime hotspots.

Gadgets are basically interactive and dynamic mini-billboards and are one of the fastest growing applications at Google. They're the foundation for iGoogle, the personalized version of the Google homepage that has tens of millions of users. They can also be included on most any page on the web with some simple copy-and-paste.

I have been speaking to people about the forthcoming London Mayoral Elections and trumpeting the virtue or the prospect of Boris being "the one." What is always noticeble is the chuckle and resignation that Boris Johnson is not serious. I find this quite surprising because I believe that a little humour goes a long way to uplift spirits. Of course, we need to put issues into perspective and be sensitive to those who feel differently about some issues. Let's not abandon the great British sense of humour. I think it's the best in the world. As London Mayor, Boris will make living in London a lot more fun!
