Kristin Mayer: “Don’t be afraid to take that step.”

In 2010, Kristin Mayer launched Betty Designs with a backpack full of cycling jerseys, tank tops and a round-trip ticket to Kona. Now seven years later, Betty Designs is a one-stop-shop for premium women's cycling, swim and triathlon gear. But don't think for one minute that Mayer's success is a fluke. She's been intimately involved with the triathlon community as both a designer and an athlete since 1996. She's designed custom kits for some of the best in the business. Her past client roster includes companies like AVIA, Her Sports + Fitness magazine, K-Swiss, Ryka, Triathlete Magazine, World Triathlon Corporation and Zoot, not to mention countless professional athletes.

Her edgy designs continue to push the envelope blending high fashion elements with performance apparel. "I launched Betty Designs in the fall of 2010 in order to bring something different to women's triathlon and cycling clothing. I wanted to marry my love for fashion and surf culture into bold, edgy designs for the endurance athlete", says Mayer. She has the mindset of an athlete, the vision of a designer and the connections of an industry insider.

This conversation was so much fun. We talk about the creation and evolution of Betty Designs and of Kristin herself. Kristin shares how trusting her gut and making big leaps have brought her to where she is today. She opens up about her biggest failure and how resilience and being courageous through fear have led to her success today. We cover force vs. flow, along with intuition and inspiration. She shares her thoughts about what a badass is and what “do epic shit” means to her. And she opens up about trying to raise a brave, open-hearted teenager. This episode is fun and real and inspiring. I hope you have as much fun listening to it as we did creating it.

Nuggets:

“I’m always scared when I take the leap—every single time—but there’s something about that that just lights my soul on fire.”

“I don’t want to be the one standing out, but I want women to feel that it’s okay to own who they are.”

“There’s something about triathlon. I learned every year that I competed how to push myself a little bit more and I tried to better myself and that was incredibly empowering for me.”

“I built this brand because it’s things I wanted myself.”

“When you get away from that intuitive sense, it’s like you’re forcing it and intuition is not anything that is forced.”

“I was so overwhelmed at that time in my life. Everything was so overwhelming and big to me, and bigger than me, that I couldn’t see that simple thing in front of me. I couldn’t see that I could take that one step right there, that I didn’t have to go all the way to the top of the mountain.”

“If I overthink, it’s not happening.”

“I think the overriding theme of my entire life would be ‘just don’t be afraid to take that step.’”

In this episode, you’ll learn:

How Kristin started Betty Designs
How being a heart-driven, emotionally driven, intuitive woman has helped Kristin create her brand and her life
About Kristin’s biggest failure—and how it led to her success
How she’s raising a teenager with an open dialogue

Have you guys heard of Bicycle Makeover? This is such a great idea to revamp your boring bike with something spectacular!https://www.bicyclemakeover.com/

Why I need a road bike...here is a great article by Rappstar!

2017-09-05T12:50:00.000-04:00

https://rappstar.com/2014/04/10/why-triathletes-need-a-road-bike/

I work part time at Endurance House in Indianapolis and I am constantly drooling over their bikes. I recently sold my road bike and haven't been able to find a new one. We just got a load of new BMC road bikes that are very reasonably priced. I will soon make that purchase as I know it's a great idea to ride the road bike and not be on my tri-bike all of the time!

I want to become a Betty!!!

2013-08-22T09:34:00.004-04:00

So Betty Designs is looking for an ambassador Betty Designs is THE most fashionable active wear I have seen. I've been around doing triathlons since 2000. There has never been a more unique brand of athletic clothing in ALL these year than theirs. Lori Bowden was my hero and she had the most amazing outfits and I honestly wish that the every day girl could have something very cool too!

Yes, I drooled over the sick looking bathing suits all the girls were wearing in Kona for the past few years, they are for a reason....awesome!

Who is Betty? Well here she is Betty, a fit rock star!
Would I like to look like her..OH YAH!!! I know just having the opportunity to wear their gear will motivate me to be the best ambassador to them that I can be!

Vote and vote often for me..PLEASE :)

Email them here: kristin[at]brandbetty[dot]com Tell them Shelley should be there next Betty!!!

Thank ya'll!

How's training going?

2013-02-06T09:22:00.000-05:00

Since you asked..LOL.

I'm swimming more, biking more, running..not so much. I started back the first week in January and just after a tiny amount of running my right knee was killing me. I finally went to an MD who prescribed an MRI oh you. Laying in a tiny tube for :45min's wasn't fun. After a week of waiting the results were thinning cartlidge, scar tissue, inflammation and the start of arthritis. Why over a month later it still hurts is beyond me. I started seeing a PT right away 2 x's per week. We've been working on exercises to strengthen my glutes, hips, etc....he showed me how to tape my knee cap so it doesn't bother me during training. The method we use is called McConnell taping which works amazingly well. I have zero pain when we do this. Today I get to run for the second time this month. Baby steps.....

I have the hotel and flights booked for San Juan 70.3 and i'm so looking forward to seeing the island. We'll be staying at the Hilton Caribe which looks pretty decent. I just hope my training goes well between now and March...it's coming soon!

San Juan 70.3

NYCM

2012-11-01T08:14:00.001-04:00

It's a no go for me! The place I was staying at has no power, so with such short notice and all the crap going on in NY I deferred my entry until 2013..at least I got that going for me!

Will it go on??

2012-10-30T08:22:00.001-04:00

I'm running the NYCM...well hoping to that is! After the hurricane we have no idea yet if the show will go on! I'm praying that all are well in NYC despite what ever happens to the race.

Beth Walsh 2nd!!!
