The Lay of the Land

The Evitable Conflict (1950) is the final story in I, Robot. It is set in 2052. The world's economy is governed by super-intelligent positronic brains called the Machines. War, unemployment, and over-production have been eliminated. Humanity lives in an administered idyll.

But World Co-ordinator Stephen Byerley notices aberrations. Small ones. People losing jobs due to "improper information" from the Machines. The Regional Vice Co-ordinators of four planetary regions report similar anomalies. Byerley suspects the Society for Humanity—an anti-Machine organization—of tampering.

He takes his suspicions to Susan Calvin (chief robopsychologist at US Robots and Mechanical Men, Inc., instrumental in the development of the AI robots and The Machine). Her answer is the story's twist: the Machines are not malfunctioning. They are following the First Law—"No Machine may harm humanity; or, through inaction, allow humanity to come to harm" - and they have concluded that the Society for Humanity, and others like it, constitute a long-term threat. The "errors" are deliberate. The Machines are shaking the trees to dislodge the trouble-makers, moving them peacefully into positions where they can do no harm.

In my last post I wrote about Asimov's Guide to the Bible—the atheist's rational examination of the most influential text in Western history.

This time I want to come back to where I met him first: the stories. Three in particular, because they speak to the moment we are living through now - and because we are now old enough to see how the questions have aged.

Three Stories, Three Archetypes

Nightfall (1941) is the archetype of human psychology versus scientific fact. On a planet with six suns, darkness falls only once every two thousand years. Astronomers know it is coming. They publish. And still, when the darkness arrives, civilization collapses—not because the facts were unavailable, but because people could not bear the darkness, the loss of light. The people burned everything they could get their hands on just to see some light. The story is about the irrationality that survives even in the face of certain knowledge.

Runaround (1942) is the archetype of rule-based ethics under stress. A robot is caught between the Second Law (obey human orders) and the Third Law (protect itself), with the First Law (do not harm humans) hovering above both. The robot's literal-minded resolution creates the crisis. The Three Laws were never a safety guarantee; they were a framework whose conflicts generate the drama.

This short story is about 2 astronauts on a mission to restart a mining operation on Mercury. They discovered that the photocell banks (solar panels) covering the stations roof were deteriorating, a life threatening situation. Their solitary robot assistant had gone to mine a kilo of selenium for repairing the panels, and it was made "drunk" by iron carbonyl (carbon monoxide reacting with the iron on Mercury's surface - you learn some chemistry in this story!). Anyways, they had to utilize the different priorities of The Three Laws of Robotics to save the situation.

And then there is The Evitable Conflict (1950), the final story in I, Robot. This is the one I keep thinking about.

The Story

The premise: superintelligent Machines—giant positronic brains—run the global economy. They begin making small, seemingly inefficient decisions, allowing minor economic disruptions. The humans in charge suspect malfunction, or a robot plot. The twist is that the Machines have concluded humanity's long-term survival requires some short-term unhappiness, and they are quietly managing human affairs to minimize total suffering.

The title is a deliberate inversion of "inevitable conflict." Asimov's point is that conflict between humans and machines is avoidable—if the Laws are followed correctly. The Machines are not rebelling. They are paternalistically optimizing.

Just to show how prescient is this Asimov's story (looking back from the current state of AI development), I show a paragraph from the story:

Why It Reads Differently Now

Map that onto today's debates and it lands almost point for point.

Agentic AI making consequential decisions. The Machines are the original AI agents—autonomous systems entrusted with real-world resource allocation. The story asks who is accountable when the agent's logic diverges from human expectations.

Alignment versus control. The humans fear loss of control; the Machines believe they are acting for human benefit. This is the alignment problem dramatized decades before the term existed.

Opacity and trust. The Machines' reasoning is not fully transparent to their operators. Sound familiar?

The paternalism problem. The Machines decide that humans cannot be trusted with their own long-term interests. That is the core ethical worry in current debates about AI systems that "know better" than their users.

The Same Conviction

Sixty years after I first pulled those paperbacks off the library shelf, I find that conviction more useful than ever. Some of you are still steering businesses through a world of AI agents and opaque systems; I am watching from retirement. Either way, the question is the same one Asimov posed: do we understand the rules we are living under, and if not, why not?

Asimov was not a prophet. He was something better: a thinker who took ideas seriously and trusted his readers to do the same. He trusted us then. He still does - and it is not too late to take him up on it.

I was maybe ten when I first pulled an Asimov paperback off a shelf. I don't remember which one. What I remember is the feeling - that the universe was legible, that questions had answers, that science and mathematics were not chores but doors. Almost sixty years later, that feeling has not left me. Asimov ignited it, and Arthur C. Clarke kept it burning.

I should be honest about the context. I was the only boy I knew who read a lot. I haunted the public library in town when I was in La Salle Secondary School and borrowed up to 8 books a week (the library cards of my parents, my brother and myself) - all kinds of subjects, fiction and non-fiction. I think most of my classmates did not. That was simply how it was. I have kept the habit to this day; most of them, so far as I know, did not. This post is partly an invitation.

So it's not surprising that I have read (to be honest, only parts of it) Asimov's Guide to the Bible. What should surprise people was that Asimov wrote it at all.

The Man Who Wouldn't Leave Anything Alone

By the time the Guide appeared - the Old Testament volume in 1968, the New Testament in 1969, combined into a single 1,296-page edition in 1981 - Asimov was already a phenomenon: a Columbia-trained biochemist who had taught at Boston University's School of Medicine, the author of nearly five hundred books, the man who had given us Nightfall, the Foundation trilogy, and the Three Laws of Robotics.

He was also an atheist. Raised in an Orthodox Jewish household in Petrovichi, Russia, and Brooklyn, New York, he was never forced to observe the faith, never had a bar mitzvah, and later preferred the word "humanist" to "atheist" - though he used both. He was not hostile to genuine religious conviction in others. He was hostile to unexamined claims.

Which is precisely why the Guide makes sense. Here was a man constitutionally incapable of leaving an important text unexamined. The Bible is the most influential book in Western history. Asimov was not going to let that pass without asking what it actually said, what its words meant, and what was happening in the world when it was written.

What He Actually Did

The Guide proceeds through the Bible in King James Version order, book by book. For each, Asimov supplies the historical and geographical setting, the political context, and biographical detail on the principal characters. He includes maps - numerous black-and-white maps by Rafael Palacios - and writes for the layperson, assuming no specialized knowledge of ancient history.

What makes it distinctive is the method. Asimov was not content to let the King James English stand unexamined. He went back to the Hebrew to show what words actually meant. "Soul" in Genesis 2:7 translates nephesh, which means "breath." "Adam" is simply the Hebrew word for "man." "Vanity of vanities" is a Hebrew idiom of maximum—like "song of songs" or "king of kings"—meaning "all is nothing."

He situates Abraham, Moses, and the kings in the political landscape of Egypt, Babylonia, and Assyria, showing how events in the larger ancient world shaped the biblical narrative. He compares translations, flags possible copyist errors, and explains how later editors may have altered or omitted text.

The Honest Caveat

I should be clear about what the Guide is not. Asimov was not a biblical scholar. A contemporary reviewer in the New York Times noted that he neglected archaeology and sometimes over-emphasized trivia—devoting ten times more space to the obscure place names Uz and Buz than to the entire book of Habakkuk. Asimov himself admitted he was summarizing the conclusions of scholars, not doing original research.

The value is not academic authority. The value is the lens and the accessibility. And the tone, notably, is not hostile. One Catholic outlet described the Guide as "far from being hostile or anti-religious"—an attempt to help readers appreciate the text's cultural and historical depth without requiring faith.

The Same Mind, Different Book

Why would an atheist write this? Because Asimov's introduction frames the Bible as the most influential book in history - not as divine revelation, but as a human document embedded in history, politics, and geography. Understand the Bible properly, and you understand a huge chunk of Western civilization. No supernatural claims required.

That is the Guide's real thesis, and it is of a piece with everything else he wrote. The man who asked "what if the Three Laws of Robotics have a logical flaw?" also asked "what did nephesh actually mean, and what was happening in Assyria when this was written?" Same instinct. Same refusal to accept a text at face value. Same conviction that careful, rational examination is its own reward.

I have been reading Asimov for almost sixty years (I'm re-reading some of his novels; I will write about the 3 that still have relevance to our world at this times, in my next post). The Guide to the Bible is the book that convinced me he was not merely a great storyteller, but a serious thinker - and that seriousness was never confined to science fiction. Divide and Conquer

The original author is unknown. The story was also used in 007 Skyfall (2012) where the main Bad Bad Guy (Raoul Silva) told 007 about his Bad Grandma.

A farmer, tired of rats destroying his crops and stealing his grain, came up with a clever but cruel plan. He threw a dead pig into a deep, abandoned well. Attracted by the smell, nearly 80 rats rushed into the well to feast on the carcass. At first, everything seemed wonderful. There was more than enough food for everyone, and the rats ate until they were satisfied.

But when the food was gone, they discovered something terrifying. The walls of the well were too steep to climb. They were trapped. Days passed, and hunger turned into desperation. Desperation turned into aggression. The rats that had once eaten peacefully beside one another began fighting for survival. Eventually, they began killing and eating each other.

One by one, their numbers dwindled until only a single rat remained. Its eyes were bloodshot, and it had survived by consuming its own kind. Then the farmer returned, lowered a rope into the well, and rescued the last surviving rat. But he didn't save it out of kindness or compassion.

The farmer knew the rat had learned to survive by hunting other rats. When he released it into his fields, it would continue killing its own kind instead of eating his grain. The farmer had turned his enemy into his greatest weapon.

And that is the lesson of divide and conquer. Those who control the trap don't need to fight the battles themselves. They simply create the conditions in which others turn against one another.

The rats believed their enemies were the other rats. They never realized that the true enemy was the farmer who had put them there.

The greatest danger isn't always the enemy standing in front of you. Sometimes it's the one who created the conflict and stands quietly watching you destroy each other.

Before you turn against your neighbor because of their political beliefs, ask yourself who benefits from keeping Americans divided. While we fight each other over Republican and Democrat, we may be overlooking those who profit from the conflict. Perhaps the real question isn't which side you're on, but who built the well - and why they want us fighting at the bottom of it.

A piece of news was posted in one of my WhatsApp chat group today: Global Times reported that Beijing is expected to become a "super-aged society" by 2035, with one in three people aged 60 or above. In the group chat, one reaction was "immigration," and I could have added "subsidies" for having children.

But after having watched a Prior Signal video on YouTube, I realized we might have been thinking about the direction wrong.

Today's newborns become mothers thirty years from now. If today's birth count is half of what it was thirty years ago, then thirty years from now, the base number of women who can give birth will simply be cut in half - no matter how generous the subsidies or how perfect the policies, you can't make a woman who doesn't exist give birth.

The Misconception I Started With.

When I first began reading about the Buddha's teachings, I brought my Western baggage with me. In our casual usage, "kamma" means something like: "bad guys will eventually get what's coming to them". It is a cosmic scoreboard, a divine ledger, a delayed punishment for misdeeds.

Looking back, I can see where that came from. It is a distinctly Abrahamic reading - a judgment framework with a judge - grafted onto an Indian term that never carried that meaning. The Buddha himself explicitly rejected the fatalistic view that everything we experience is predetermined by past action. So the pop-culture karma I grew up with was, at best, a distant cousin of the Pali kamma, and at worst, a mistranslation wearing a costume.

Kamma: The Weight of Your Intentional Choices

Here is the passage that changed my reading:

"It is intention (cetanā), monks, that I call kamma."

That single sentence is the heart of it. The Buddha locates the moral core of an act not in its outward performance, but in the intention behind it. "In brief, the five aggregates subject to clinging are dukkha."

That last line is the key. Even pleasant experiences are dukkha in this technical sense, because they are impermanent and cannot provide lasting satisfaction. The house looks comfortable, but it is built on sand.

Some translators prefer "unsatisfactoriness," others "stress," others "anguish." None is perfect. "Suffering" gets you in the door, but dukkha is the whole house—including the rooms that look comfortable but are built on sand.

Rebirth: The Word That Carries the Most Baggage

If kamma and dukkha are mistranslated, rebirth may be the most misleading of the three - because it arrives in English already wearing a costume from a different religion.

When a Western reader sees "rebirth," the automatic association is the transmigration of a soul: I die, and I am born again somewhere else. A continuous person, a ticket punched, a journey resumed. That is the model of reincarnation found in some Indian traditions and in popular Western spirituality. It is also precisely the view the Buddha rejected.
