We launched Spectro into early access last month and have gotten some great feedback in the meantime. Lots of players are enjoying the gameplay loop – it’s a roguelike set in a ghost buster style haunted tower. Most players really like the variety of challenges the ghosts present but the one critique we were getting a lot was about one of the mechanics for completing searching challenges. Some players loved them and others just wanted to just keep busting ghosts. We decided to make this a separate optional challenge using a new system we’re calling Relic Challenges. We just added it in the latest update which includes slightly re-balanced levels and additional types of these optional challenges to give players more variety in gameplay.

If you play Spectro we’d love to hear what you think!

Just thought I would update the blog here because it’s been so long! We’ve been pretty deep into development on Spectro here. A lot of exciting progress has been made with the ghost AI and how it reacts to the procedural generated levels. That was a tricky challenge but things are coming together. In the meantime we had to push the release date back a bit, we’ll announce the new date here as soon as we can.

We’re using Aron Granberg’s A* pathfinding solution for Unity with a lot of custom AI behavior layered on top. That plug in is excellent though so definitely check it out if you’re looking for pathfinding in Unity and the native solution isn’t enough. It came in handy especially for dynamically generating navmeshes at runtime. Something Unity can’t do on its own.

In addition to the AI we’ve also got cool things like gated level flow for houses with hidden keys and treasure placed in ideal locations each time a new house is generated. More on this soon. For now, back to coding!

Things have been somewhat quiet on here as we continue to develop the new project full time. I suppose this is the first formal announcement of the new game on the blog here, so here are a few details: It’s called Spectro, and it’s a game about trapping ghosts and searching for hidden artifacts in the town of Weirdwood. You are the sole proprietor of a ghost detective agency in this strange little town, and you will be clearing many houses of these supernatural pests to see if you can keep your business thriving.

Things are coming along nicely. We’ve made progress with the game mechanics including the trapping of ghosts as well as the movement system. We’re also making progress with the procedural level design algorithms – the goal is to achieve a high level of variability while maintaining a consistent level of quality through a combination of hand made components and well planned use of randomization to give each house a different feel. We’re hoping to get into more 3d modeling and animation soon, but first several components must be in place. The ghost AI is also coming along and very soon we should have ghosts wandering around the procedural houses.

We’ll be inviting you to Weirdwood soon. In the meantime, check back here for updates.

I recently started using Desmos, a free graphing tool, to come up with curve equations for my C# scripts.

Occasionally it can be helpful to have the formula for a specific curve in order to have more control over the modulation or falloff of a value. For instance, I recently had to code a waypoint system for VR that has the player look at specific waypoints around them; depending on the distance of their gaze from the waypoint, it will scale up the waypoint size slightly to give them visual feedback.

The problem I was running into was that when the player was too close to the waypoint, this scaling range felt way too large, so depending on the distance to the waypoint, the gaze activation distance should change as well. In short, I needed to find a curve that would modulate the gazeActivationDistance in an ideal way. From there I was able to decide what the gazeActivationDistance should be at various distances from the waypoint, and using that I could plot a curve that generally fit what I wanted.

I knew at a distance of 1m from the waypoint the gazeActivationDistance should be 1.2m, and at a distance of 2m from the waypoint it should be 1.3m, and at a distance of 3m it should be 2.2m. Using desmos.com and Epic Pen (a great little tool!), I was able to first mark down the points I knew, and then formulate an equation through trial and error. Because I’m not a calculus expert, I find this workflow fairly effective in getting me the results I need. Starting with the basics — exponents make curved parabolas, dividing extends the length of the curve, and adding offsets it in the y axis, I was able to plug in the values I needed as you can see in the video below:

And finally, here is the equation in C#:
