One particular aspect that might be overlooked in the shuffle is Alexa ranking.

Alexa is a creation of Amazon.com. It is a different kind of ranking system that might not necessarily be as "important" in the grand scheme of things as Google ranking, for example, but it still can play a big role in a site's income. Alexa tracks a site's traffic via a special toolbar that can be installed on browsers. When people with this toolbar visit sites, it counts toward Alexa ranking.

Although some consider the system unfair, the reality is that many advertisers use it to determine what sites they might want to invest their advertising dollars in. Alexa ranking is also sometimes used to help determine the rates a particular site can fetch. With this in mind, coming up with a good web strategy that includes Alexa ranking can be important to a site's overall success.

Boss Design has an article on search engine optimization and Alexa ranking that offers some insight on how to build ranking with this site. The most solid path to take is to create a site that people want to visit.

Boss Design can help on this front. The company specializes in web development from the ground up, covering all aspects of design and strategy along the way.

It all depends on how the prospect is handled.

When link baiting is worked into web strategy in a manner that involves solid content building rather than just baiting alone, the end results can be rather beneficial for a website. The key is to make sure a quality site is the primary focus, not just the development of incoming links.

The benefits of "good" link baiting can include traffic building, recognition and even an increase in PageRank. Link baiting itself is a blanket term that describes efforts that can be taken to increase the number of incoming links to a site. These links, especially when they are from high-ranking sites, can boost a site's ranking.

There are some very good ways to "link bait" without jeopardizing reputation. These include offering useful content, generating a positive buzz about a site and even working to pull traffic in through contests, quizzes and giveaways.

Unfortunately, there are other methods that are not necessarily considered legitimate. Learning how to create a web strategy that takes the good aspects of link baiting into account can really pay off though, so it is worth considering.

Boss Design specializes in helping others develop a solid web strategy that can pay off with sites that others want to link to.

However, I don't believe that all good and worthy SEOs belong to SEMPO. In my opinion, many potential SEO clients couldn't afford the majority of those who belong to SEMPO. I'm not dissing the organization, by any means, but membership in a single organization doesn't necessarily make either an affordable or ethical SEO specialist, in my mind and joining such an organization just because everyone who is anyone is part of it isn't a very good reason for joining, either.

The best thing you can do is steer clear of promises and guarantees, because no one can guarantee you number 1 rankings - especially not overnight - not even the folks who belong to SEMPO. Search engine optimization is a long process that's subject to ever-changing algorithms and stiff competition. What you really need to do is put a balanced Internet marketing services campaign into your web strategy for ongoing and lasting improvements.

But how much content, and how often?

The topic is certainly open to debate and planning for regular content additions should be part of your web strategy. The discussion started when the operator of an ecommerce site wanted to know if adding five new articles at a time made any difference from a search engine's point of view than adding them one at a time. Responses vary on which is more effective - adding the content one piece at a time on a regular basis, such as daily, or adding 5 pieces of new web content once per week.

I don't think it makes very much difference in terms of search optimization and whether it matters to visitors depends on how often the average visitor comes to the site. Those looking for something new every day would of course be more attracted to daily posting of fresh content, even if it's only a short blog post. For optimizaiton purposes you wouldn't want to add 100 pieces at once unless you were just building out a new site. Search engines look for "natural" growth, and I don't think it takes an argument to consider that 100 new articles at once isn't "natural".

What is important is placing links to the new content on a page within the website that gets spidered frequently by the search engines, and most agree that new content benefits from being linked to from the home page as well as from the HTML sitemap. And don't forget to add the new URL to the XML sitemap, too.

Pacino points out:

"Color is far more complex than one might imagine. Realize that color is not a property of light but rather a property of the brain/mind. After all, light is not necessary to experience color. Although every physical aspect of visible light can be measured precisely in wavelengths, candelas, lumens, and lamberts, the psychological aspects of color are less easily explained."

Further, he explains that:

"In the United States, wedding colors are white and funeral colors are black.

In Asian countries where the religions Buddhism and Taoism are prevalent, orange and yellows are spiritual colors as well as colors for funerals. In Eastern cultures, red combined with white signifies joy. In Eastern cultures, white is associated with mourning or death.

In India where the religion Hinduism is more prevalent, the god Shiva (“the Destroyer”) is associated with the color red, Vishnu (“the Preserver” of the universe representing mercy and goodness) is associated with black, Krishna (“the union of existence and bliss”) is associated with blue, and Brahma (“the Creator”) is associated with white.."

Color is an important communications tool. It can be used:

To convey meaning

Change space perception

Show similarities and differences (for example, the two previously quoted text passages use the same style and color to make them stand out as direct quotes from Pacino's article)

Information chunking

Attract attention

Create emphasis

So you can see, color is an important communications tool. It can be used effectively not only in graphic designs, banner ad design and web page backgrounds, but with text - just as font size and font styles can be used as tools for different communications purposes.

Both the design and the content on your website can be used for effective communications - just remember to consider the cultural background of your website's target audience when developing your web strategy.

Source article: Color Association by Culture

She outlines the 3 different types as:

Content Developer

Designer/Graphic Artist

Coder/Programmer

In this context, content includes not only good written content, but photos, podcasts, drawings, videos, etc. that all make up content on the web. As she points out, content is the backbone of the web and will bring traffic to your website and keep them coming back for more.

The designer/graphic artist role is fairly easy to understand. Web designers and graphic artists make the site look good. It's all about the visual with them. By working on the site's presentation and positioning of elements, they can make a site attractive and appealing.

She says of coders/programmers "Chances are, if you get upset at the idea of HTML being a programming language, then you are a programmer at heart. Content developers and Web designers tend to feel HTML is programming, while Java, Perl, and PHP coders do not."

I've always considered "web developers" as those in the third category. I found it interesting that Jennifer would include designers and content specialists in the web developer category, but I can see her point. All of these professionals are involved in developing and maintaining web sites. In some respects, the categories overlap, too. After all, if graphic design can be part of content development, and content developers often need to know HTML, and some use Javascript and sometimes even a bit of PHP or Perl. And, the content developer, designer and coder/programmers all need to be concerned about usability and the ability of web pages to be able to track search traffic, so they also need to be aware of SEO best practices.

All in all, web development/web application development, design and content are all intertwined and you need specialists in all of these categories to carry out a successful web project. That's why an integrated web design firm like Boss Design, who has experts in each of these areas as well as ongoing website optimization and Internet marketing services is the best choice for any web project, especially for new sites or sites that are undergoing a major overhaul.

Source article: What Kind of Web Developer Are You?

Of course, like any other new software it's still buggy.

If the popularity of the Apple Safari browser grows substantially, it could pose another challenge for web design and development professionals. Admittedly, many of us in the profession test websites in Internet Explorer and Firefox. Unless the client's customers are heavy Mac users, there wasn't enough of saturation of the Safari browser to worry if design and coding would be compatible for Mac users. Sure, you can assume some types of programming and design elements won't have any problem since they're expected to be cross browser compatible. But I was surprised when I asked a writer to post a blog entry for me on Blogger (what I'm using right now) and he wasn't able to properly use Blogger's interface because the only browser he had available for his Mac was Safari.

At any rate, I think the number of users who are searching for an alternative to Internet Explorer continues to grow substantially, and this will just be another alternative to consider for Windows users.

And yet, for ecommerce sites, they are perhaps the most critical element of ecommerce website design - that's right - design. Because if you consider conversion issues at the time your site is designed - by allowing for these steps along the path to conversion - it will be much easier to update your conversion path and still retain the stepping stones that point your visitor in the direction of becoming a paying customer.

I think this line of thinking will help those who are struggling trying to get a handle on what social communities are all about and how they should be managed.

As social media optimization (SMO) continues to grow and mature with the explosion in popularity of online social communities, it will help to keep that analogy in mind in order to efficiently manage online communties and keep them engaging.

Without it, you really are not establishing any goals for your website. In addition, once keywords are selected, they need to be mapped to specific pages on your website. As your web development or content specialists make changes to the pages, knowing which keywords are targeted for those pages is critical so that updates aren't made that will negate your SEO and site promotion efforts. Additionally, in looking for deep linking opportunities (to pages other than your home page) you'll want to know what text to use for the links that will be pointing to the page.

I've heard clients say they don't need keyword research - nothing could be more shortsighted. How do you know you're not targeting the wrong keyword phrases that either won't bring anyone to your site because they're being used too infrequently or are so competitive that ranking well for those terms will take years and thousands of dollars? How can you be so certain that people will look for your site the way you think they will?

Professional keyword research services are well worth the cost and worth their weight in gold. Don't leave your website optimization to hunches - be smart and select the keywords that will get you the most bang for your buck. Let the pros at Boss Design get you the results you need through professional keyword research and analysis. Proper keyword selection is critical for any web site.

It's free, it's simple and it takes no effort other than providing a good service or product.

In the online world, a form of word of mouth advertising does exist. It's the process of securing links - called "backlinks" into your site. In years past, "reciprocal linking" was a search engine optimization technique practiced by nearly everyone, and it worked. At least for a while. Then, search engines got smarter and started placing added value on links from sites that were related to your topic, placing little or no value on those that weren't.

Today, reciprocal links provide very little value. While it may be true that selected links you secure from sites that are relevant to your topic and considered "authoritative" sites by the search engines and which already enjoy a Google PageRank value equal to or greater than your own site's PageRank can give you some juice in the search rankings, value is typically greater if you don't link back to the sites that are linking to you. Seems kind of anti-social, doesn't it?

Initially, the answer for securing one-way links to your site was getting listed in web directories that didn't require you to link to them. In some cases, that may have meant paying to get your website listed in the directory. This practice still exists today, but now even web directories are losing their influence in search rankings.

My personal observation has been that many web directory pages have lost PageRank in the past several months. And Google itself is now devaluing paid links, viewing them as a type of "spam" in some cases. That means even online advertising could be seen by the search engines as attempts to artificially inflate your PageRank and search rankings. What's a site operator to do?

While it may be very true that reciprocal, directory and paid links from other sites will have less influence on your rankings, it doesn't mean they can't bring you traffic. A select number of web directories do get some good traffic that may end up on your site as a result of your directory listing. Additionally, even though reciprocal links have been devalued, it doesn't mean they won't bring traffic into your site. Incoming, unpaid links act as a form of "word-of-mouth" advertising that won't cost you, except for the fees your SEO specialist might charge to find the best one-way and reciprocal linking opportunities available. For these reasons you don't want to leave your link campaign management in the hands of software tools or firms that offer to get you 100 backinks for $6.00.

Keeping up with shifts in the search engine algorithms - formulas used to determine your site's rankings - is no easy task. Website optimization is not a once and done type of endeavor, either. Successful sites that want to build traffic and improve their search rankings need to face the fact that this is an ongoing effort that cannot be automated and cannot be forgotten. It requires a professional effort by practitioners who keep up with these changes and know what techniques are the most effective in bringing traffic to your site.

After all, you can have a great Google PageRank and good rankings and still have no one come in to your site wants to buy your products and services. Promotional opportunities and maximizing conversion rates are also important to a website's success. That's why the seo experts at Boss Design look for not only current, but long-lasting opportunities with a balanced, or "hybrid" approach of getting your site ranked, increasing your traffic, and getting that traffic to convert. to sales. Don't trust your website promotion efforts to amateurs, contact the pros at Boss Design.

That's a great line for the movies, but it sure doesn't work as far as web site traffic is concerned. If traffic is desired, good Google rankings for your targeted keywords are a good first step. However, even after you get good rankings, you'll want to make your listings in the search engine results invite visitors to click through to your website. You can have the snappiest, most up-to-date web site on just about any topic and still not get a single visitor.

One of the best ways to make this happen is to get your web site ranked in Google's top 10 search results for your keywords. And hopefully, you've had a professional perform proper keyword research for you. You can rank number 1 for "automated espresso widget shoes", but it won't bring you traffic if no one is using that phrase in a search query. And because Google enjoys the greatest market share by far of all of the search engines, it makes sense to make good Google rankings an objective in your search optimization program and budget for it accordingly. In fact, millions of people around the world perform simple and advanced Google searches each day on topics so far reaching it's mind boggling.

Getting a site high in the Google rankings for highly competitive keywords is by no means easy and it may take a very concerted and long-lasting effort to accomplish this objective. It also means you need to aware of what your competitors - in those case, those sites that rank in the top 10 for your keyword phrase - are doing to get there. A rule of thumb is that the more competitive your targeted keyword phrase - the higher the number of websites trying to rank for that phrase - the more time, effort and expense you should expect. This is especially true for websites in their first year of existence as search engines, especially Google, place greater value on the sites that have been around the longest.

Getting into Google's search results pages isn't enough to turn a web site into a success. Studies have shown that users are most likely to click one of the first 3 or 5 results (depending on which study you believe is the most reliable). Others suggest only the top 10 will do. However, I've seen traffic come in from a search engine query when the site placed within the top 100. That's because Google offers the option to display 100 results on a single page. While it's primarily advanced users who use that setting, they can still mean business for your site.

Contact us to find out how you can improve your search rankings for Google (AOL shows essentially the same results as Google), Yahoo and MSN. They're the big 3 (although Ask is gaining ground) and what you do to improve those results will help you improve in the other search engines. The great thing about Boss Design is that not only can we provide you with a great web design and offer you highly professional web development services, we can also optimize your website and offer ongoing website promotion plans to improve and maintain your search rankings, to keep you up with and ahead of your competition, to build your traffic and increase your sales. If done correctly, well managed SEO initiatives will result in bringing more traffic to your website.

Search engine marketing initiatives, such as Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising through Google AdWords or Yahoo and online advertising can also bring you increased traffic - at a cost per visitor, of course. So can email marketing intitiatives. Improving your ads and good campaign management can maximize your click through rates, bringing more potential customers into your site.

However, all the "potential customers" in the world won't necessarily mean that your sales will perform at the levels you'd like - especially for ecommerce sites. In order to really get your business or ecommerce shop on the fast track to success, you need to create a "hybrid" optimization program that includes your search marketing initiatives, including PPC and SEO, other website promotion techniques, along with conversion optimization.

Conversion optimization is the practice of maximizing your conversion rate - the number of visitors who take the desired action - buy something, etc. divided by the total number of visitors to your site. So if you have 100 site visitors per day and 10 make a purchase, your conversion rate is 1/10 or ten percent.

If you can double your conversion rate - to 20 percent, for example - you'll double your sales (as long as the average purchase stays constant, but you may be able to increase that too through conversion optimization techniques. And, your sales will double with the same amount of traffic!

Now, just think. As your site ages, your orgainic search rankings improve, you use techniques to improve click through rates on your ads, and you've implemented and monitored conversion optimization techniques - NOW we're talking revenue increases!

The combination of these techniques can create a synergy of sorts. Think about it. Say you discovered that your conversion rate was low because your website didn't seem like it had enough security to protect your shoppers' privacy. So you go ahead and have your web developers or IT people beef up security on the site and you make it well known to your visitors that your site is now secure. There's a pretty good possibility that not only your conversion rate will increase because more visitors will be willing to shop with you online, but the amount of your average order could also increase as a result of the new shoppers who may be willing to spend more than your old faithful customers who didn't give a rip about security or didn't know enough about it to really care. Voila - a synergy is born!

For more on conversion optimization, you may want to read 9 Ways to Convert Website Visitors to Customers.
