Although the Daniel Craig era initially seemed like it offered something new (beyond the blond Bond) … uh, it doesn’t, really. Jules and Lisa dig into Spectre and try to figure out how it stacks up against the likes of Casino Royale and Skyfall, with brief dips into fandom’s obsession with the latest Q and whether swapping a couple of Bond girls would have made a better movie altogether. Oh, and how exactly can the next Bond movie integrate tentacle porn?

Both agree: the less said about Quantum of Solace, the better.

A movie so good we’ll mix all kinds of awkward metaphors! Over two hours of people working together to do amazing things and save people. What a nice change of pace from all the murders and dystopias.

Plus, this episode has it all: Sean “Dadbod” Bean, water on Mars, news cycle synergy, optimistic sci-fi, maybe letting Matt Damon stay marooned for once, the eventual director’s cut of the all-Chiwetel version (as the Martian! as the head of NASA! as the Rover!), the bullshit-ness of the Face on Mars, and Lisa’s continued, worrying inability to remember anyone’s name.

The latest from Denis Villenueve, this bleak, violent, gorgeous movie is the best argument yet for Roger Deakins to get that Cinematography Oscar (COME ON, THE ACADEMY). It’s also garnering a lot of buzz about Benicio del Toro’s chances for a second Best Supporting Actor award. And if Emily Blunt doesn’t at least get a nod, we’re going to freak. out.

The Lisas are of course not at all biased about any of the above but very strongly believe Sicario is the logical choice for every award, as long as it’s an Oscar for Roger Deakins.

Oscar nominations were announced this morning! Vox has the full list over here. As there are every year, plenty of things that could qualify snubs, and fewer surprises than you might think. (The Academy is mostly old white dudes who tend to reward tradition over innovation: remember that.)

Selma is nominated for Best Picture, but director Ava DuVernay didn’t get a nod for Best Director nor did David Oyelowo get Best Actor. Gone Girl was widely praised for its script this year but didn’t get in for Adapted Screenplay, though Rosamund Pike is up for Best Actress (GIVE IT TO HER. -L). And no women in any of the writing or directing categories, but “Everything Is Awesome” from The Lego Movie is a lock for Best Original Song, right??!
