I found this very good article from the Beer Advocate.

This info is long overdue, and I was amazed at how little info there actually was on "reviewing beer." There's some pro-stuff, but nothing for the average beer lover. So I hope that everyone finds this useful in his or her beer adventures.

Stop, think and drink!
One day you might find yourself enjoying a beer, when all of the sudden you begin to have an opinion on the beer, beyond just enjoying it - or not, as the case might be. From there, you might decide to discuss it with others or take some notes. But before you do: stop, think and drink! Although taste is very subjective, there are ways to compose your thoughts and remain as objective as possible. The following tips will allow you to evaluate a beer, while respecting what the brewer was trying to achieve.

Note: you don't need to be a beer geek to follow these tips either.

Respect brewers
Behind each beer is a person with feelings and pride. Beer might be their passion, livelihood or entire life. Even if you don't like a beer, at the very least have some respect and be constructive with your criticism.

This drink is notoriously difficult to balance. With Plymouth gin, Luxardo maraschino liqueur, and the recently reintroduced Crème Yvette violet liqueur, these proportions work well, but using other brands may necessitate tweaking.

In a cocktail shaker three-fourths full of ice, combine 2 ounces gin, 1/2 ounce lemon juice, 1/2 ounce maraschino liqueur, and 1/4 ounce crème de violette liqueur. Shake well and strain into a cocktail glass.

In our early days, Mexico was a popular exotic travel destination, so perhaps it shouldn’t be surprising to see so many reader requests for tequila recipes. This response to a letter to the editor from someone who’d returned with a bottle of the agave spirit is pretty close to a Margarita. Why not? It works.

Tequila is at its best if not too diluted, but we will compromise and give you something palatable.

Pour into a cocktail shaker, with ice cubes, the juice of 1/2 lime, 1 teaspoon sugar or 4 dashes grenadine, and 2 ounces tequila. Shake well and serve in cocktail glasses.

For years the Mojito has been a go-to drink for those looking to pair Latin cooking with a refreshing tipple—or to escape the winter gloom through the power of light rum mixed with sugar, mint and lime. Hold the muddler! There’s a new exotic spirit in town. Big in Brazil, but barely outside, cachaça is the key component in the caipirinha—a tart drink made when the ancient spirit distilled from fermented raw sugar cane is mixed with sugar and lime.

Brazilians drink nearly 350 million gallons a year, and American bartenders have found smart ways to work with the product. (Leblon and Cabana Cachaça are two major brands to look out for, but there are nearly 30,000 distillers in the country).

MEDFORD, Ore. -- Four Loko is back on the shelves in Oregon.

The Oregon Liquor Control Commission banned the drink after controversy for its high alcohol and caffeine content.

But the makers of the beverage got rid of the caffeine and other stimulants in the drink and are now allowed to start selling it in stores. Thunderbird in Medford already has the new product.

Back East, truckloads of Four Loko aren't heading back to the shelves but to gas tanks instead.

After Four Loko and other similar drinks were banned, an environmental company decided to recycle the drinks into ethanol, which will be mixed with gasoline.

La Floridita, La Bodeguita del Medio, and Sloppy Joe’s Bar were the three most famous Havana watering holes during Prohibition. Sloppy Joe’s slogan at the time was “First port of call, out where the wet begins,” and Charles H. Baker Jr. clearly spent a fair amount of time there. “Let’s not sneer at the place … simply because it’s a raucous tourist dump. I have mentioned elsewhere, and still insist, that at least as many good drinks have been mixed on this plank of mahogany as on any equal area on earth, with the possible exception of the old Waldorf.”

Put a teaspoon of sugar in a highball glass, squeeze in the juice of 1/2 small lime, and toss in the squeezed lime shell. Muddle for a moment with 3 sprigs fresh mint, add 1 jigger light rum and handful of fine ice, fill with chilled soda, and relax.
