Yet there is a tradition of American anti-imperialism that gives the lie to this mythology. Richard Seymour examines this complex relationship from the American Revolution to the present-day.
“In these times of international rebellion, [Richard Seymour] has given us a tool with which to build a movement for a more just world, both within and beyond our borders.” —Camilo Mejía, author, Road to ar-Ramadi

“In the tradition of Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States Richard Seymour shows that US imperialism has generated significant domestic opposition rooted in grassroots movements for racial, economic, and social justice.” —Michael Letwin, founding member, New York City Labor Against the War and Labor for Palestine
===

On October 17, 2010, 20 year old Danroy "DJ" Henry of Easton, MA was fatally shot by Pleasantville, NY police officer Aaron Hess. As paramedics attended to the police officer who shot him, DJ Henry, still handcuffed, was left to die on the ground. The murder of DJ Henry, like that of Trayvon Martin, was not an isolated event. This happens all the time. This is the daily reality for what it means to be black in America. From the hundreds of thousands of Black and Brown incarcerated to the many more who are brutalized and harassed by the police everyday on the streets. The murder of DJ Henry proves that racism in the US is alive and well.

The brutal murder of Trayvon Martin became a rallying point for those fed up with a racist society. Hundreds of thousands of people across the country poured out into the streets to demand justice for Trayvon and his family--turning anger and outrage into protest and social action. We must do the same for DJ Henry.

Aaron Hess is still free. We need to fight for justice for DJ Henry and his family. We need to fight for justice for all the DJ Henry's and Trayvon Martin's and all the black people who are constantly criminalized and denied equal rights in this country. We must challenge the racism that relegates blacks as second class citizens and specifically we must challenge police brutality.

Come join the family of DJ Henry for a panel discussion on police brutality, racism in America and how we can fight for justice!

SATURDAY, APRIL 28, 11:30AM-2PM
Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

"Art in Bloom" is the MFA's biggest annual event, drawing thousands of people to the museum from April 28-30. But while MFA management tries to project a humane image, it's aiming to outsource the "permanent collection"--the workers who make the museum what it is! Come out to rally and let the public know what the MFA bosses are trying to do!

The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston wants to outsource our guard union. We would lose our status as museum employees and would be forced to apply for our jobs to whatever outside contractor the museum chooses! The museum would have non-union workers doing our union jobs! Let's give the top 1% our 100% effort in stopping these attacks!

===

On February 26, 2012, Trayvon Martin was shot dead by George Zimmerman, the self-appointed head of a neighborhood watch program in a gated community in Sanford, Florida. The 911 calls reveal that Zimmerman was racially profiling Trayvon--he told the dispatcher that, “This guy looks like he’s up to no good, or he’s on drugs or something.” Before he shot him, Zimmerman made sure to say that Trayvon "looks black". Trayvon is dead today because he was a young black man walking where someone thought he shouldn't be. His death proves that racism in America is alive and well.

Trayvon Martin’s death is not an isolated event. This is the daily reality for what it means to be black in America. From the hundreds of thousands of Black and Brown incarcerated, to the millions who are denied the right to the equal education, affordable housing, quality healthcare and other social services, and to those who suffer the daily insults of racist bigotry---people have had enough!

His brutal murder, like that of Emmett Till a generation before, has become a rallying point for millions fed up with a racist society. It has motivated people to turn anger and outrage into protest and come out in the streets and demand justice not only for his murder but against all the aspects of racism in this society that caused his tragic death.

On April 7, people will be marching in Sanford and Washington, DC. And in Boston, we will be marching too.

We will be marching from RUGGLES to DUDLEY, ending in front of the Police Station, with a speak out near the old B2 barracks grounds.

JUSTICE FOR TRAYVON MARTIN!

Thousands of people have been protesting around the country for Trayvon Martin, the young 17 year old brutally murdered in Sanford, FL. In Sanford itself, a town with a population of over 5,000 residents, 30,000 people protested this weekend. There have been protests in Philadelphia, Seattle, Miami and locally in Cambridge.

People are saddened for Trayvon and his family, but millions recognize the racism that led to his death. We need to build protests in Black neighborhoods and in communities of color where people face racism and racist attacks every day. What can we do to keep the memory of Trayvon alive? Can we organize a rally and march in Dorchester or Roxbury?

Join this organizing meeting and bring your thoughts and ideas!

Texas turned down $35 million in federal funds for Medicaid Women's Health Program. This means that at least 300,000 low-income and uninsured women in Texas will have no or greatly-reduced access to basic reproductive health care.

A proposed bill in Arizona requires women to prove to their employers that they need birth control in order to treat a medical condition if they want their prescription to be covered by their insurer.

Today, women pay 50% more than men for the very same health coverage. Being a woman is not a pre-existing condition.

TRAYVON MARTIN is dead because he was a young Black man walking where someone thought he shouldn't be. His devastating story is as old as the United States--and it proves that racism is alive and well in 2012, while the first African American president sits in the White House.
The widespread shock and anger over what happened to Trayvon -- and the massive protest that has already emerged around this travesty -- tell us something else, too: That large numbers of people are outraged by racist injustice in this and other forms and are increasingly willing to fight back.
One proposal included increasing fares overall by 40% while doubling prices for students, elderly and disabled people. The other one would have cut half the bus routes in Boston, while ending commuter rail, Mattapan line and E line service on weekends. Either of the two proposals would have been disastrous for millions of people in Boston--particularly for people of color, poor folks, the elderly, disabled people and students.

But in Boston, thousands of people mobilized to the hearings around the city to tell the MBTA and city officials that we cannot and will not take these cuts and fare hikes. Because of these protests, the MBTA withdrew its initial two proposals.

Now the question is--how are we going to secure a complete victory? How can we win NO CUTS, NO FARE HIKES, NO LAYOFFS, and BETTER SERVICE? Why is the MBTA cutting service and raising fares? What is going to be the best strategy to challenge the plan of fare hikes and service cuts? How can we fund the T? What should our demands be? And how are we going to win our demands?

Please join us for a panel to address these questions.

RSVP on Facebook

There is a war being waged against Black America. In Boston, public schools in black neighborhoods are being shuttered while families face foreclosure and long-term unemployment, Stop-and-Frisk policies and the ongoing War on Drugs have locked up millions of black and brown people in a system that many are called the “New Jim Crow”. In Boston and in cities around the country, our hard-won and necessary transportation systems are under attack. Their viability is being threatened by savage cuts and fare hikes in a calculated push towards privatization by corrupt and unresponsive politicians and their corporate benefactors.
Public transportation is a right and must be accessible to all. Service cuts and fare hikes will have a devastating and disproportionate impact on low-income communities, communities of color, students, workers, seniors and the environment. We say NO TO PRIVATIZATION of our common resources and NO MORE EXCUSES! We will not accept any funding strategies that attempt to divide the 99% against each other or shift the burden onto the backs of the 99%: the poor and working classes. End the wars and tax the rich!

On April 4th, we will stand together to demand public transportation for the 99%. If our call is not answered and the necessary funds redirected, it will only add to the growing body of evidence that our government no longer represents us.

UPDATE: The Amalgamated Transit Union, the largest labor organization representing transit workers in the US and Canada, has pledged its support for the April 4 National Day of Action for Public Transportation, declaring, “Public transportation is a human right and critical to our nation’s economic recovery.” Read ATU press release.

The Boston Carmen's Union (MBTA) is also supporting and mobilizing for this day of action at the Massachusetts State House. See http://carmensunion589.org/2012/03/alert-rally-on-april-4th/
A new generation is calling out a system of power and privilege for the few, uncertainty and hardship for the many. Revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt, general strikes in Greece, and occupations on Wall Street and across the United States are just a few examples from the past year illustrating that the global capitalist crisis is not going to be solved by gutting working people's living standards—not without provoking a diverse, widespread, and determined struggle against it.

The Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky called a revolution "the forcible entrance of the masses into the realm of rulership over their own destiny." This is what socialists mean when we talk about revolution. Today a small number of rulers make the important decisions, and the rest of us have to abide by them or organize ourselves in opposition. But why should decisions be left in the hands of the 1%? Isn't it fundamental to the idea of a free society that big decisions shouldn't be in the hands of the few, but should be the purview of the entire society? Shouldn't Chinese workers have a say in whether they live in cramped dormitories, working 16-hour shifts assembling iPads? Shouldn't Greek workers have a say in whether they have access to a job or their living standards

are cut by 25%?

What if we had a society "in which the free development of each is the condition for the free development of all"? How could we achieve that? This talk will lay out what we mean by revolution and argue that such a thing is possible, but only if we set our sights high.

Don’t miss this chance to meet hundreds of others like you; committed fighters against a system of greed, racism, war, and oppression.

For more information about the Socialism 2012 conference, email info@socialismconference.org, and someone will get back to you.

Speakers include: Ali Abunimah • Ian Angus • Martha Biondi • Nicole Colson • Paul D’Amato • Neil Davidson • Sam Farber • Dan Georgakas • Glenn Greenwald • Arun Gupta • Brian Jones • Alan Maass • Marlene Martin • Scott McLemee • David McNally • China Miéville • Charlie Post • Michael Ratner • Boots Riley • Jen Roesch • Eric Ruder • Beryl Satter • Michael Schwartz • Elizabeth Schulte • Liliana Segura • Lance Selfa • Ahmed Shawki • Sharon Smith • Marvin Surkin • Lee Sustar • Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor • Sherry Wolf • Richard Wolff • Dave Zirin • and many more!

===

Themes for the Day:

How is the War Economy Working for You

Bring the Troops Home and Take Care of Them When They Get Here

Cut Military Spending, Save Jobs, Teachers, Fireman & Police

Peace Is Patriotic! Not a Dirty Word

No War on Iran

Last year, Veterans For Peace were denied permission to walk in South Boston's traditional St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The stated reason given by the Allied War Veterans Council was that the organizers “did not want the word peace associated with the word veteran”.

Seventeen years ago the gay and bisexual community applied to be in the parade and they too were denied. They sued and it resulted in a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that any group that organizes a parade can exclude whomever they like.

Last year with only three weeks to go, Veterans For Peace applied for their own permit and invited the gay and bisexual community to join the peace movement in a parade. The parade had over 500 participants, a Duck Boat, Grand Marshals, The Leftist Marching Band, five divisions, Veterans, peace groups, Join the Impact (GLBT), religious groups and labor. It was a grand success and warmly welcomed by the residents of South Boston. It was also front page news in practically all the Boston Newspapers and was reported on TV and radio.

This year, once again, Veterans For Peace were denied. This year they were not given a reason why, just denied. So if you are a veteran of the U.S. Military and carry a gun or drive a tank you are invited to participate, but if as a veteran you stand for peace you are summarily denied permission to participate.

We invite all progressive groups (Peace, Environmental, Occupy Everywhere, Civil Rights, Women’s Rights, GLBT Rights, Labor, and Faith Groups) to please join us in the St. Patrick’s Peace Parade: the Alternative People’s Parade. Please join us in this show of solidarity against bigotry and exclusion in the City of Boston.

This is the largest Saint Patrick’s Day Parade in the country, attracting in excess of 700,000 people, and is an excellent opportunity to get our messages of Peace, Equality, Inclusion, Jobs, Social and Economic Justice out. Please Join Us! Send endorsements to info@masspeaceaction.org.
How should the Party relate to the broader movement or working class? What kind of democracy or centralism do we want within the Party? These questions, and more, will be taken up – all with an emphasis on practical, real world application for today.

Link to the Book: http://books.google.com/books?id=SUJW_TikxJAC&pg=PA11&source=gbs_toc_r&cad=4#v=onepage&q&f=false

Discussion Questions to Consider:
1) What are some of the distinctions between the views on organization put forward by Marx, Lenin, and Luxemburg?
2) What is the role of revolutionaries in the years prior to a revolutionary situation?
3) What is the importance of organizing in a separate revolutionary organization?
