Coronaviruses are a type of virus. There are many different kinds, and some cause disease. A newly identified type has caused a recent outbreak of respiratory illness now called COVID-19. As of now, researchers know that the new coronavirus is spread through droplets released into the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. COVID-19 symptoms can be very mild to severe. Some people have no symptoms. Mild symptoms may include fever, fatigue, cough, sore throat, headache, and decreased sense of smell or taste. More severe symptoms may include shortness of breath, chest pain, severe vomiting and diarrhea. Symptoms may appear two to 14 days after exposure.

Diagnosis may be difficult with only a physical exam because mild cases of COVID-19 may appear similar to the flu or a bad cold. A laboratory test can confirm the diagnosis. As of now, there is not a specific treatment for the virus. People who become sick from COVID-19 should be treated with supportive measures: those that relieve symptoms. For severe cases, there may be additional options for treatment, including research drugs and therapeutics.

The CDC recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public places, such as the grocery store, where it's difficult to avoid close contact with others. It's especially suggested in areas with ongoing community spread. This updated advice is based on data showing that people with COVID-19 can transmit the virus before they realize they have it. Using masks in public may help reduce the spread from people who don't have symptoms. Non-medical cloth masks are recommended for the public. Surgical masks and N-95 respirators are in short supply and should be reserved for health care providers.

If you develop symptoms and you've been exposed to the virus COVID-19, contact your doctor for medical advice. If you need to go to the doctor or hospital, call ahead so health care providers can take steps to ensure that others aren't exposed.

Take the following precautions to avoid spreading the illness:

Stay home from work, school and public areas, except to get medical care.
Avoid taking public transportation if possible.

The current status of the 5G technology for cellular systems is very much in the early development stages. Very many companies are looking into the technologies that could be used to become part of the system. In addition to this a number of universities have set up 5G research units focussed on developing the technologies for 5G.

BPJS, Indonesian National Health Insurance System

What is BPJS?
BPJS stands for Badan Penyelenggara Jaminan Sosial (Social Insurance Administration Organization). BPJS adminsters the Indonesian national health insurance Jaminan Kesehatan Nasional or JKN for short.

There are two versions of BPJS: BPJS Kesehatan (the successor of PT Askes) and BPJS Ketanagakerjaan (the successor of Jamsostek). The first administers JKN for non-employees/self employed/informal workers, and the latter for employees. Both are government insurance companies formed by the law Undang-Undang no. 24 tahun 2011.

Eligibility
Individual participation is mandatory for all Indonesian residents, including expats on ITAS/P by January 2019. Meanwhile, employers must enroll their employees by January 2016. Expat employees who are working at least 6 months (and their dependent family members) must be registered by their employer.

How to register
Employers must register their employees and dependent family members. For non-employees registration may be done online. You will need to provide the following:

KK (kartu keluarga)
KTP (kartu tanda penduduk)
NPWP
Photo 3×4 cm (2)
Email
Phone number
Bank account number to pay premium from.

You will still need to go to the local BPJS office to pick up the card. Since 2016, you have to enroll everyone on the same KK at the same time.

Premium for Non-employees/Self-employed/non-formal workers
As per the newest regulation Presidential Decree No 19 / 2016, the premiums are:

Class I : Rp 80,000
Class II : Rp 51,000
Class III : Rp 25,500

Per person, per month, due on the 10th of each month. For employees the premium is 5% of monthly salary, up to a salary cap of Rp 8 million. In the private sector, the employer is responsible for 4% and the employee is responsible for 1%. Meanwhile, for public sector employees the split is 3% and 2%. This covers the employee, their spouse and up to 4 dependent children. Dependent children are unmarried children up to 21 years old, or 25 years old if attending university. You can add parents or children beyond the first 4 for 1% of monthly salary per person. Employees with monthly salary of Rp 4 million or less are eligible for Class II facilities. Meanwhile, those with higher salary will be eligible for Class I facilities.

There is a bit of unfairness in the case that both husband and wife are working as employees. In that case both have to pay the premium. Yet, the coverage of one should cover the other.

Note on taxes: The employer contribution is considered as taxable income (penghasilan kena pajak). Similarly, employees can not deduct their contribution from taxable income.

In Indonesia, hospitals have different levels of room comfort. They range from wards with 10 or more beds, to private luxury rooms the size of small apartments. The medical service itself is supposed to be equal regardless of room comfort. Therefore, classes in BPJS refer to the comfort of the room only. Typically, Class I will have 2-3 beds per room, Class II will have 3-5 beds, and Class III 5 or more beds.

You can upgrade to a higher class by paying the difference out of pocket. You can even upgrade to classes higher than Class I (VIP, VVIP etc). Be aware that the difference could be high, so it is best to ask for an estimate first. You can also change your class (and payment) with BPJS once every 12 months.

Coverage
There are no exclusions due to preexisting conditions or age, nor are there coverage limits. However, the program does not cover:

Healthcare obtained outside the BPJS procedure
Healthcare obtained at facilities not participating with BPJS
Care obtained abroad
Cosmetic procedures
Infertility treatments
Orthodontics
Medical issues from drug or alcohol abuse
Self inflicted injuries or due to dangerous activities
Alternative medicine
Experimental medicine
Contraception, cosmetics, baby food and milk.
Medical care due to natural disasters, epidemics, special occurrences or state of emergencies.
Other care not related to the treatment of covered medical issue.

Penalties
If premiums are overdue for over 1 month, the coverage becomes inactive on the 10th of the following month. Therefore, you have to pay any outstanding premiums to reactivate. Within 45 days of reactivating coverage, any in-patient treatment will incur a penalty. The penalty is 2.5% x treatment cost x number of months inactive. This is up to a maximum of 12 months or Rp 30 million, whichever is lower.

Getting a date with a Vietnamese woman is easy. Just go on Tinder, find a chick, and invite her out. It’s easy enough.

Here are some tips on making sure that your date goes well. All based on my date experience AND on me eavesdropping on dates while I’m working in a cafe. Everything here is what I thought was common sense stuff that every guy knows, but most guys learn about relationship stuff from Hollywood movies and record company music.

Take Charge

The most important factor in the success of your date is whether or not you take charge. Seriously, everything is downstream of your ability to lead.

However, I see way too many guys walking behind their Vietnamese woman like a little puppy dog. You may as well lube your asshole up and give her the strap-on.

Never walk behind your woman (unless you have her on a leash, but even then she still should be behind you.).

It’s more than just that though:

Don’t let her pick the venue.
Don’t let her pick the table.
Don’t let her drive (unless she has an expensive bike. too risky for me to drive a $2,000 bike).
Don’t let her complain when you run a red light or ride on the sidewalk.

Women will always try bossing you around to see if you’ll take charge.

Just ignore, or casually dismiss, her bossiness and get back to bossing her around. That’s what she wants. Well, she wants you to do a lot more than that, but that’s crimethink and would make me an Unperson. Read 50 Shades of Grey if you want the answer.

Seriously.

Ok, great. Onto the next point.

Don’t Be Boring

Another common problem are guys talking too damn much AND/OR about super logical guy stuff. Seriously, no woman gives a fuck about all that big brain manly stuff like politics, society, and business. It’s just way too complicated for them to understand.

Yes. I’ve heard guys droning on and on about that stuff to women.

Boringggggggg.

And being boring is the fastest way to have a girl never want to meet you again.

Speak Some Vietnamese

You don’t need to be fluent for this to work.

Throwing out a few cutesy Vietnamese phrases always goes over well in my experience. Hell, counting to ten will work perfectly fine.

You can even ask her how to say a few words in Vietnamese and how to properly say her name… but you should always mispronounce her name. Always gotta show that blatant disrespect.

Make Physical Contact

This is another one that all the experienced readers know.

You always want to make physical contact as soon as possible. Make sure it’s natural and not creepy.

Easier said than done. I know.

You shouldn’t have to consciously think about it. If you are thinking about it, then it’s going to be weird and creepy since you’ll be nervous. And women can easily detect nervousness and uneasiness.

Touching her arm when asking a question, telling her to read your palm or reading her palm (all these chicks love palm reading), comparing hand or feet size, pointing out how small her wrist is and then wrapping your fingers around it, or touching her scar while you ask about it all work perfectly fine.

Poking or tickling her ribcage also works. Playing footsie works too.

Those last three get annoying fast. Don’t overdo them.

Have Good Body Language

Another less talked about aspect of a date is body language. It’s one of the most important things you can do on a date.

It’s especially important with an ESL person because they will not fully understand the meaning of your words. But they can certainly understand your body language. Women are especially good at subconsciously reading body language.

All this stuff has to be on point from the moment you meet your date. I’ll eventually write a full article on body language since I love that stuff. In the meantime, here are some quick tips:

This just depends on the vibe and your logistics. You should know after about 30ish minutes if you have a good shot at getting her back to your place. Some of you with a finely tuned slut radar can pick it up instantly, but 30 minutes is plenty for all but the most inexperienced of men.

Don’t worry too much about it. I like to invite them once if I get a good vibe. If she agrees, then great. But I’m not one of those guys that will try a million different ways to get her back.

They’re not stupid. They know exactly what is going to happen at your apartment.

Biodiesel, What Is It?

In today's world, one can hardly escape the subject of fuel prices and fuel supply. For a number of different reasons people have turned from standard petroleum based fuel sources and looked for a reliable alternative-fuel. Biodiesel is one such fuel that experts and enthusiasts have embraced as not only their idea of a fuel of the future, but is also their choice for a fuel for today. But, what is Biodiesel?

Biodiesel is a fuel containing some of the same traits as conventional diesel fuel. Biodiesel is made from high quality vegetable oils through a manufacturing process that can be done on a large scale - such as a refinery, or on a small scale - such as a home Biodiesel kit. The primary use for Biodiesel right now is as a substitute for petroleum based diesel fuel.

In different parts of the world, different plants are used as the source for the vegetable oil that is made into Biodiesel. Theoretically, any vegetable grown can be broken down and turned into Biodiesel, but right now most Biodiesel producers use one primary crop as their source. In America, the primary crop grown for Biodiesel production is corn. Corn, being one of the more common crops grown in American, provides a readily available supply of vegetable matter for Biodiesel manufacturers. In much of Europe, rapeseed is used in the production of Biodiesel. And, in Southeast Asia the primary plant grown for the manufacture of Biodiesel is Soybeans. After going through the manufacturing process, there is little difference in the properties of Biodiesel made from one plant over another.

The process used to manufacture Biodiesel from pure vegetable oil is called ester interchange. In the process the vegetable oil is combined with a much smaller amount of Methanol. Methanol can be manufactured by the fermentation of starch or sugar and it can also be produced from natural gas. The vegetable oil and methanol are placed in a small quantity of an alkaline catalyst and it is in this process that the chemical makeup of the vegetable oil is altered. The result is a clean burning fuel with a viscosity (flow properties) approximating that of standard diesel fuel. During this process, approximately 90% of what is manufactured is Biodiesel fuel, while the remaining 10% is in the form of the glycerine that was broken down from the vegetable matter. This glycerine can also be used in other applications in the chemical industry, making the manufacture of Biodiesel practically waste-free.

The current uses for Biodiesel are mainly limited to that of being a cleaner burning replacement for petroleum based diesel fuel. Biodiesel can be both economically viable and highly efficient for most mobile applications. There will be some performance and usage differences between diesel and Biodiesel and they will vary from vehicle to vehicle as expected. It is possible for most modern diesel engines to burn standard Biodiesel. Currently, Biodiesel is also marketed as a Biodiese/Ethanol mix or a Biodiesel/Diesel mix.

Still a young industry by any measure, Biodiesel is on it's way to becoming one of the brightest lights in the search for a viable alternative-fuel.

Perfume (Latin "per fume" meaning "through smoke") was highly favored by the Egyptians, Romans, and Arabs. In East Asia, perfumes were incense based. People used to make perfumes from spices and herbs like bergamot, myrtle, coriander, conifer resin, and almond. The use of flowers came only after Avicenna, an Iranian doctor and chemist showed the process of distillation, whereby oils could be extracted from flowers. In 1370, at the behest of Queen Elizabeth of Hungary, the world's first modern perfume - "Hungary Water" was made by blending scented oils in alcohol solution.

The composition of a perfume is of vital significance and is handled by an expert known as a perfumer, who deals with primary scents like rose, jasmine, cola, etc; modifiers like esters; blenders like linalool and hydroxycitronellol; and fixatives like resins, wood scents, and amber bases. The resulting scent is explained in a musical metaphor of three 'notes', namely, top notes (consisting of fast evaporating small size molecules) like citrus and ginger scents; middle notes (consisting of slow evaporating medium size molecules) like lavender and rose scents; and base notes (consisting of slowest evaporating largest size molecules) like fixatives etc. All these notes work together like a musical chord.

Perfume oils contain volatile compounds in high concentrations and thus have to be diluted by solvents, so that injury is not caused when applied directly on skin or clothes. The common solvent is pure ethanol or ethanol mixed with water. Fractionated coconut oil or wax, neutral smelling fats such as jojoba, can also act as solvents and dilute the perfume oil. The perfume oil is further mixed with other aromatic compounds. Generally, the percentage of aromatic compounds in perfume extract is 20% to 40%; in eau de parfum is 10% to 30%; in eau de toilette is 5% to 20%; and in eau de cologne is 2% to 5%.

The oil concentration in a perfume along with other aromatic compounds, determines the intensity, longevity, and price of the perfume and thus it is a closely guarded secret of every perfumer and perfume house. By adjusting the percentage level and the notes of the perfume, variations on the same brand may be created like Chanel's Pour Monsieur and Pour Monsieur Concentree.

Classification of perfumes is never complete, due to its ever-evolving nature. The traditional classification comprises of categories like Single Floral, Floral Bouquet, Ambery, Woody, Leather, Chypre, and Fougere; while the modern classification comprises of Bright Floral, Green, Oceanic/Ozone, Citrus/Fruity, and Gourmand. In 1983, Michael Edwards, a perfume consultant, created a new fragrance classification "The Fragrance Wheel", which classified and sub-grouped five standard families, namely Floral (Floral, Soft Floral, Floral Oriental), Oriental (Soft Oriental, Oriental, Woody Oriental), Woody (Wood, Mossy Woods, Dry Woods), Fougere (has fragrance elements from all the families), and Fresh (Citrus, Green, Water).

Perfumery has used a number of aromatic sources like plants, animals, and synthetic sources in the making of perfumes. Plants are used as a source of aroma compounds and essential oils. The parts of plants that are used are:

1 - Bark (cinnamon, cascarilla);
2 - Flowers (rose, jasmine, osmanthus, tuberose, mimosa, vanilla);
3 - Blossoms (citrus, ylang-ylang, clove);
4 - Fruits (apples, strawberries, cherries, litsea cubeba, juniper berry, vanilla, oranges, lemons, limes, grapefruit);
5 - Leaves and Twigs (lavender, patchouli, citrus, violets, sage, rosemary, hay, tomato);
6 - Resins (labdanum, myrrh, gum benzoin, Peru balsam, frankincense/olibanum, pine, fir, amber, copal);
7 - Roots, Bulbs, and Rhizomes (vetiver roots, ginger and iris rhizomes);
8 - Seeds (coriander, cocoa, mace, cardamom, anise, nutmeg, caraway, tonka bean);
9 - Woods (agarwood, birch, rosewood, sandalwood, pine, birch, juniper, cedar).

Animal sources include Ambergris, Castoreum, Musk, Rom terpenes, Honeycomb, and Civet. Other natural sources include Lichens and Protists. Synthetic sources include synthetic odorants synthesized from petroleum distillates, pine resins, etc. Modern perfumes are mostly made from synthetic sources as they allow fragrances not found in nature, like Calone is a synthetic compound that imparts a marine metallic ozonous fragrance. Synthetic aromatics are more consistent than natural aromatics, and are hence, widely used nowadays in modern available perfumes.

Whether a caller and a receiver of the call pay in cash or in minutes, two charges for a single call seems unwarranted to many consumers in view of the long standing history of billing for landline calls in which only the calling party pays when per call charges apply.

Of course, the angst over the topic is only intensified when not only wrong numbers can be dialed but even telemarketing calls could potentially sneak through with the customer being socked with the charge. Despite these concerns however, it is still unclear if indeed the cell phone plans in the US are actually more costly than their counterparts abroad.

Cell phone plans which offer unlimited nights and weekends and free nationwide long distance are predominate in the US, although this is not so in many other countries which may help balance out the difference in how incoming calls are handled. In addition, more recent cell phone plan offerings are beginning to change the face of how services are billed in this country giving users more flexibility and greater use without increased cost.

Two examples are cell phone plans which offer "free incoming" plans and those which offer unlimited calling to a user's circle of most commonly called numbers both of which offer greater savings. Free incoming plans offer exactly what their name implies, unlimited inbound calls from anywhere in the country, at any time in addition to nationwide long distance and unlimited nights and weekends. However, the plans generally restrict these free incoming calls from those within the same network. Sprint, for instance, allows free inbound calling from anyone in the Sprint PCS or Nextel Network.

Nextel on the other hand provides similar plans with the addition of no roaming fees and unlimited direct connect for those who can use the walkie/talkie function with other Nextel users.

Other fairly recent introductions in the US market are cell phone plans that provide unlimited calling to a list of "favorites" or most commonly called numbers. T-Mobile "MyFavs" plans allow users to create a list of their 5 "favorites". The most attractive part of these plans is that the favorites can be in any network, or even a landline, offering less restrictive guidelines and greater freedom in using free calling time. Users are even allowed to change their favorites list monthly and for those with a family plan, the various members of the family can have their own personal favorites list providing additional flexibility.

Cell phone plans in the US often require commitments of two years and are a significant expense for users. However, with the proliferation of plans which offer unlimited nights and weekends, free nationwide long distance and now the introduction of plans with free incoming calls and unlimited calling to lists of frequent contacts, some cell phone plans in the US may offer more economical choices which their overseas cousins may envy.

How to trade successfully in the Forex Market

This article is about money management and trading psychology. This is the lesson that you never get with 99% of other Forex systems that you have come across.

I find it interesting that most of the systems out there don't include this because if they actually were successful traders, they would know that this was the key to success and to leave it out makes an incomplete system that won't work!! This tells me that the people that wrote them or are selling them aren't traders at all. They are just in the business of selling HOPE!

Well, if you haven't noticed yet, I am a trader, and I am different than the others. Don't get me wrong, there are honest trainers out there, I learned from one and I am eternally grateful to him.

So let's get on with this. First of all, this is my own interpretation of several sources, and the practices that have worked for me. Please read EVERYTHING you can find on trading psychology, and money management. There are a lot of slightly different views but overall, they are very similar and the main important points are all pretty much the same.

There are two main issues that cause 99% of the problems. Can you guess what they are?
If you answered FEAR and GREED, you are correct. These two emotions are probably responsible for 99% of the worlds problems as well but that is beyond the scope of this course À .

So, now that we know what the big obstacles are, let's try and figure out how to overcome them. In the course of my lessons, I have listed a few but I will put them all together here in one place so that it is easier to follow, and perhaps make it easier for you to develop your own system to help you trade better.

We can't eliminate fear and greed. They will still be there in your heart and mind, but we can make some rules so that they don't interfere with your trading success. We can come up with systems and procedures to follow, since we KNOW ahead of time that fear and greed are major problems. I'm sure you have heard the statistic that 95% of all speculative leveraged traders FAIL. This is absolutely true. Here is another statistic that I believe... 100% of traders that don't know how to overcome fear and greed will FAIL. So does that mean that if I can teach you how to overcome these problems that your chance of success is 100%? Of course not. But I can tell you that you cannot be successful if you don't protect yourself from yourself.

In lessons 1-3 I have outlined a trading system. The first thing you must do, whether you follow my system, another system, or your own system is to follow the rules of the system WITHOUT FAIL. If your system calls for a certain entry point, do not enter until there is a signal to enter.

Systems are designed for a reason. That is why it is called a system. What do we learn from this? Patience. Perhaps the stupidest thing you can do is enter a trade on a hunch.
This brings us to our first FACT:

The odds are in your favor before you enter a trade. This is true for most trading systems. Void of fear and greed, if you follow each system exactly, you will profit. Some systems may offer better profits than others, but overall you should be able to profit with any system, IF you have no fear and no greed.

This brings us to THE BIG SECRET. Other than omitting trading psychology, other systems also don't tell you that you are playing a game of odds. Let's say for example that we are playing "coin toss." Theoretically, for 100 flips of the coin, 50 will come up heads, and 50 will come up tails. Of course, the first 100 may be 55/45, but the more you play, the closer to 50/50 the numbers will get. Our system for "coin toss" is as follows: We play for 20 hours, and flip the coin exactly 5 times each hour, and for every heads that comes up, we get paid $2, and for every tails that comes up we pay $1. This should be a profitable system. After our game we see that heads came up 50 times and tails came up 50 times. (Stay with me here). So at the end of 100 tosses, we have paid $50 and received $100. A profit of $50.

So let's say that during our second game of coin toss, we decide that we are going to let the flipper(hint: the market is the flipper) keep flipping the coin for an hour while we take lunch but we are not going to pay or be paid for those flips. During our lunch hour, heads comes up 5 times in a row (which is theoretically possible, and not that unlikely). And now we are back from lunch, and we are down $10 for the hour. Now, theoretically the odds of 5 tails in a row coming up after 5 heads in a row are pretty good because for every ten tosses, you should have about 5 heads and five tails. So now we get 5 tails in a row and now we are down another $5, for a total of $15. So not counting the 5 tosses during lunch, this leaves 90 tosses that we still have to account for and let's say that they were 45 heads and 45 tails. Our profit for these tosses is $45 (45x2 minus 45x1), now if we take away the $15 for the tosses we didn't take, and that string of losers, we are left with a profit if $30. So lunch and 5 lousy spins cost us 40% of our profits.

Now this is theory but it absolutely applies to this market. If you are picky about what trades you want to take and what trades you don't want to take, you are MESSING WITH THE ODDS. My point for this whole big story about "coin toss" is this: If the conditions are met, TAKE THE TRADE without hesitation. The odds are in your favor, but only if you take ALL of the trades that meet the conditions. When I say ALL trades I know the market is open 24 hours a day and you can't possibly take every trade. You need to pick a time frame and stick to that same time frame everyday and take ALL trades during that time frame.

I can tell you that in the month before I realized this (my first month of trading real money actually), my total profit was 92 pips. I had an idea of what I was doing wrong so I was keeping track of the trades that I didn't take along with the ones that I did. I included entry point, day, time, and whether the profit target was hit or if it was stopped out. Don't get me wrong, I was extremely happy to be in profit after trading for only one month with real money. But then I went back and looked at the numbers for "what could have been." Guess what? Had I taken every trade that met my conditions, my profit for the month would have been 355 pips! I was not happy. But soon I realized that I had messed with the odds. After realizing what I had done wrong (or not done right in this case) I began to have more confidence in my systems. The very next month my total profit was 515 pips, or a 560% improvement just for taking all of the trades that met the conditions. I think that is enough said about that.

Sorry to stay with the coin flip game here but it actually works very well in teaching these principles.

This brings us to:

FACT #2. You do not need to know what is going to happen to make money. If we know that we are going to make $2 fifty times and pay $1 fifty times as long as we flip the coin, are we going to play? Of course! Well, all trading systems have similar odds. From my testing, I know that this system on average will produce 9 wins of 20 pips for every 1 loss of 40 pips (that number may vary but that is the maximum loss I ever take). So we know ahead of time that 9 wins at 20 pips is 180 pips, and minus the loss of 40 pips, leaves us with 140 pips profit. Now keep in mind that you may be 8 and 2 this week and 10 and 0 next week. We never know when a loss is going to come. We may even lose every trade for a week, but not lose a trade for the next 9 weeks. Believe me it happens. You do not need to know exactly what is going to happen, you just need to take every trade that meets the conditions and then count your profits at the end of the month/week/year etc.

This section deals with money management as well as psychology. Back to coin toss for a minute. We know that each win brings us $2. And we know that for each win in this trading system we get 20 pips. We know that each tail that comes up costs us $1. And in our system we know that each loss is 40 pips. If we know what our loss is going to be ahead of time, we know what it is going to cost us to find out "what is going to happen." From this we can decide how much we want to risk based on our account size.

FACT 3: You know how much it will cost to find out. I have decided not to ever risk more than 5% of my account on any one trade. So knowing that, I can figure out how many lots to trade ahead of time based on my account size. It may cost $250 in margin for a 1 lot position but this is not what we are risking, we are actually risking ten dollars times the number of pips in our stop. If our stop is 40 pips, we are risking $400. Now we know that we better have at least $8000 in our account to take a position of this size. If this trade turns out to be a loser, and our balance falls to $7600, we know that we can't afford to take that trade again because a loss of $400 is more than 5% of our balance. We would need to adjust our number of lots down accordingly to keep our risk.

Protecting Your Corporate Name

Imagine this: you want to sell widgets, and you've chosen the perfect name for your brand new widget business. You've made the name original and yet homey, easy to say, hard to forget, and you've checked databases everywhere to make sure that nobody else thought of it first. You've invested vast sums of money in marketing materials and storefront signs that include your wonderful new name. Best of all, you've already impressed some new widget customers with your amazing services and they are spreading the word that your business-yes, the one with your fabulously unique name-is the place to go for all their widget needs, bar none. You love your new name.

Then picture this: shortly after your widget shop opens for business, you learn that a guy two blocks over is using the same name, for a strikingly similar widget business. That's your name hanging in his window, by God! Customers are getting confused. Your business begins to drop off and you suspect the other widget guy is getting the customers who were looking for you.

Is this nightmare scenario possible?

Sadly, yes-but only if you don't know how to protect your corporate name properly.

The first thing a new business owner must do is register the name of the new corporation. The procedure for registration varies by state, but generally involves some very simple paperwork to be submitted to the state's Secretary of State's office, along with a small fee. The Secretary of State's office will not register two businesses with the same name, so this procedure will prevent later businesses from incorporating in the same state under your corporate name. Registration with the Secretary of State's office will also legitimize the corporate identity of your business as a legal entity separate from its founders, and will provide evidence to demonstrate that the name is being used in commerce when you next register the name as a trademark. Be aware, however, that a business can incorporate in any of the fifty states, so registering your business in your own state provides only partial protection of your corporate name. To provide greater protection, it is necessary to register the name as a trademark or service mark with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Registering your new business name with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office will provide nationwide notice of your claim to the name as a trademark, and invokes the jurisdiction of the federal courts in protecting the name. To register a new business name as a trademark, an application may be obtained online at the U.S. Patent and Trademark website, www.uspto.gov. This application may either be filed online or mailed into the Patent and Trademark Office. Be aware that the processing of your application may take more than a year, so this application should be filed as soon as possible to begin the process. Status of your application may be checked online.

You do not need to wait until your trademark is nationally registered to begin protecting your right to it, however. When using your business name on marketing materials or other written matter, you can demonstrate your claim to the name as a trademark by adding a small "TM" at the end of the word. This provides notice to those who see the written materials that you consider the name to be proprietary and should not be "borrowed" by others. After you receive national registration of the business name as a trademark, however, it will receive the greatest possible protection and you may demonstrate this by including an R in a circle, "®," at the end of your business name.

Once you have received trademark registration, you must file periodic Affidavits of Use with the Patent and Trademark Office to prove that the name remains in use. If you cease use of the mark for a period of years, you will lose ownership of the name as a trademark and others may be able to use it.

Next comes the business of "policing" your trademark. This involves online research and investigation within your own industry to determine whether your trademarked business name is being used by others in the same or similar business that might cause customer confusion as to your business identity. In that event, a judicious letter often dissuades the newcomer from using the business name. If a letter is ineffective, the matter may be resolved through litigation.

The founding of a new business is a busy time, but it is necessary to begin as quickly as possible to protect the new business name against infringement. In this way, it is possible to prevent customer confusion and retain all of the customer good will that they have come to associate with your company's name.
