Local Eco-Friendly Finds!

In honor of Earth Day, we've scoped out some of the best local eco-friendly fashion designers and boutiques! Here's what we found.

1. Vaute Couture

When Leanne Mai-ly Hilgart made her first creation in the 5th grade, a puffy paint tee that read "Spay and Neuter, Save the Dogs" she never imagined that she'd end up here. In 2009, Leanne was named #1 of 7 Best Emerging Green Designers of 2009 by Ecouterre and she just opened her flagship store, Vaute Couture (vegan haute couture), in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Leanne works tirelessly to create these ecofriendly, 100% vegan designs without compromising on ethics, design or function. While Vaute Couture's main focus is coats (right now they're on sale!), they also carry tees, sweatshirts and knits.

2. Dirty Librarian Chains (DLC)

Susan Domelsmith's eco friendly jewelry line, DLC, is composed of vintage materials that have been carefully cleaned and inspected using super earth friendly practices. Her main goal is to create jewelry without creating waste. As a result, the pieces are a mix of random components and it creates the most desirable designs!

3. Study New York

Tara St. James' line, Study New York, was founded in 2009 and in September 2011, Tara released her third eco-concious collection. She is inspired by restrictions using hand dyed ikat silks and no waste patternmaking. Next, Tara hopes to add more accessories to her women's collection and a men's line. If it's anything like this stuff, we'll be dressing our boys in Study from head to toe!

4. Kaight

Kaight is a fashion forward, eco-friendly boutique located on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. The boutique carries everything from dresses and skirts to swimwear and outerwear. Oh-and shoes too! 5. Bird

Bird was the very first LEED-certified retail store to open in New York City. While they carry high fashion designers like 3.1 Phillip Lim, Alexander Wang and Thakoon, their Williamsburg store often hosts art shows and sells photography and art by local designers. Currently on display is J. Penry, as well as prints and homegoods by by artist Shanan Campanaro of Eskayel.

Sophie Blackall

If you live in New York or you've stepped foot on the MTA in the last couple of months, you've probably seen Sophie Blackall's work.

Recently, the MTA commissioned Sophie to paint a subway poster as part of the Arts for Transit program that started in the 80's. Sophie really wanted the painting to reflect the people of New York, she says, “Even though these are made up characters, they're vaguely based off people I've seen.” The stories within the painting and the interactions between the characters are especially important to Sophie. She says in her blog, “The same sorts of things which attracted me to Missed Connections, I find on the train: subtle interactions, eccentricity, beauty, sorrow, secrets, kindness, generosity, excellent hairdos. Every sort of person imaginable and unimaginable.”

When you look at this, don't you just feel like you're riding into the city on the L during rush hour? We sure do.

Sophie shares some of her Missed Connection drawings on her Missed Connections blog. These, we love and they're even more fun to read (yes, we said it) than the actual Missed Connections themselves! We could spend hours posting them all but here's some especially great ones.

ReDress Us

Even though this event isn't local to those of us who are in New York, it holds a special place in our hearts here at Bound, so we just can't help but tell you about it!!! ReDress Raleigh, founded in Raleigh, North Carolina, aims to change the way fashion is created by promoting eco-friendly and sustainable practices. Every year ReDress hosts a fashion show featuring local designers or designers who have been part of the event before, and their eco-friendly designs! Not only does ReDress promote local fashion, it promotes local businesses and restaurants by giving back in hopes that all parties will grow together. In fact, one of Brooklyn's own, Brittany Erb of b.erb, (more to come on this brilliant designer-stay tuned!) was featured in the show in 2010 and 2011. Check out some photos below of other designs featured in 2011.

This year, the show will be held this Friday, April 20^th at the Flanders Art Gallery in Raleigh at 8:00pm. Featured designers include Belinda Blakley of Belindabilly, Jana Saur of Jbelle, Johanna Ely of Good Girls Studio, Julianne, Applegate of JulieApple, Kendal Leonard with Amor Verde, Kim Kirchstein of Leopold, Margo Scott of Rocket Betty Designs, Melissa Lowery of SSD Jewelry, Oami Powers of Judah Ross, Stephanie and Zulay Smith of Zass Design & Pilar Ramirez and Alejandra Dunn of PamOr Designs.

Local Art...BAM!

Who doesn't love some good ol' Brooklyn art? We sure do!! The 8^th Annual BAMart Silent Auction started last week on April 11th and will go through Sunday, April 22^nd. The silent auction features local Brooklyn artists or artists who have collaborated with BAM before. Some of the artists who will be featured in the auction are Nate Lowman, Richard Prince, Terence Koh, Mikalene Thomas, and Matthew Richie. While there will be a few big ticket items, don't let that stop you from going. Even the hipsters can afford the original polaroid portraits of Dolly Parton, Keith Haring, and Bianca Jagger!

Burberry Supporting Local? Yes Please.

Up-and-coming and Burberry aren't two (or four?) words that you usually hear used together but Christopher Bailey, Burberry's Chief Creative Director, has changed all of that. Christopher has hand picked four emerging British musicians to be a part of Burberry's new SS '12 Eyewear campaign, One Night Only , Marika Hackman , Life in Film and The Daydream Club . Not only are these artists posing in the print ads but they've also each recorded their own “Burberry specific” song and filmed an accompanying music video. These tunes will debut on Burberry's Facebook page. The artists will also play for Burberry's upcoming events in Paris, Milan, New York and Sydney over four nights in May. The eyewear is unisex and can be bought at any Burberry store and Burberry.com. Nicely done Christopher!!
