Painting Success
7th July 2009

Johnstones' Young Painter of the Year held at The College

The South West heat of the Johnstones’ Young Painter of the Year was held at The Bournemouth and Poole College on Thursday 25th June 2009. The competition has been running for the past seven years sponsored by Johnstones, an international paint supplier, with a long history as a professional trade brand.

Bournemouth and Poole College students together with students from Swindon and Somerset College, all working towards their NVQ Level 2 in Painting and Decorating, entered the competition. At the beginning of the day all students were given a specification to work to and given six hours to complete the task.

The standard of work was excellent and competition was fierce with Lee Barthorpe eventually gaining first place with Emily Miller from Somerset College taking second place. As the judging was so tight the judges decided to give 3rd place to Kirstyn Symonds.

Lee received a cheque for £100.00 and is entered into the final held at the National Painting and Decorating show in Coventry on 10th/11th November and Emily was given a cheque for £30.00 and all entrants are given a set of tools and a t-shirt as a memento of the today.

Scott Oliver, senior BPC lecturer commented “We are pleased to host the regional South West competition and welcome Somerset and Swindon Colleges to the event. We have worked closely with Johnstones for many years and it was great to be able to enter our first year students. To achieve 1st and 3rd place was a wonderful result for our students and just goes to show their hard work and commitment has paid off.”

Gerry Groom, Johnstone's Paints Territory Manager commented "Yesterdays Johnstone's Young Painter of the Year heat, held at Bournemouth College, was a resounding success. The competition has been developed to allow the next generation of decorators to demonstrate their skills, working with market leading Johnstone's products.”

Adult Learners are a Class Act
29th June 2009

Adult Achiever of the Year Awards held at the Hotel Miramar in Bournemouth.

Overcoming adversity was the lesson of the day at the recent Adult Achiever of the Year Awards held at the Hotel Miramar in Bournemouth. The awards ceremony is held annually to honour high achieving mature students from The Bournemouth and Poole College who have overcome all manner of issues in order to reach their academic aspirations.

Twenty students were nominated, each of whom had a personal story to tell, which included beating addiction, escaping domestic violence, financial hardship and bankruptcy, bereavement, illness or disability.

College Principal, Lawrence Vincent said, “Behind each of the candidates there has been a personal battle, but the over riding sentiments are those of pride and achievement. This is a joyous occasion and cause for celebration. Further education changes lives, and the winners here today are testimony to just how empowering and enriching education can be.”

The winning student was Jason Aughton from the Faculty of Creative Industries. Jason is studying music technology and is excelling on his course, progressing onto further studies this September. Jason, who is blind, impressed the panel with his outstanding musical talent and the way he is learning not only to utilise technical recording and studio equipment, but specialist adaptive technologies. By being in full time further education, Jason became eligible for a guide dog, and last year was partnered with his dog Volley, who now accompanies Jason into college.

Jason has been an inspiration to his tutor group who volunteered to organise a charity gig for Guide Dogs for the Blind, raising more than £150.

Runners-up for the award included Diane Hinton and Paul Ham. Diane’s life story had been a series of set backs, including bullying, abuse and bereavement which led to serious depression which in turn had a major impact upon her life. Two years ago Diane took the brave step of returning to education, and has not looked back since, finding renewed confidence and self esteem.

For Paul Ham, being diagnosed with a rare form of muscular dystrophy meant huge life changes. Paul had to give up a lucrative and successful career and at 42 felt his life was all washed up. Paul sold his house to downsize and pay for re-training. Having now successfully completed an access course, Paul is aiming for a new and worthwhile career in occupational therapy, where he feels he can put his qualifications and his life experience to good use.

Joy Postings, Chair of The College Corporation added, “We have heard some extremely moving and emotional stories today, with some tragic circumstances that thankfully most people will never encounter. Above all though what shines through is that these individuals are far from negative about their personal state of affairs. These students have accentuated the positive and been incredibly successful and should be an inspiration and lesson to us all.”

The College has recently published ‘Opportunities’ an adult skills guide full of useful information for learners aged 19 or over. The guide contains a comprehensive course listing together with information on adult learning grants and concessions, plus application forms.
Football Coaching Course Kicks off
22nd June 2009

First ever college course based at AFC Bournemouth

Its game on as the first ever college course based at Dean Court stadium gets up and running with its first group of trainees.

The Football Coaching Programme is a new recently launched pilot course run in partnership with The Bournemouth and Poole College and the AFC Bournemouth Community Sports Trust. The 23-week programme aims to give young people the opportunity to work towards nationally recognised qualifications and to get involved in various community sports projects.

A mixture of theory and practical work, the course will give the necessary skills to students who may wish to pursue a career in coaching or progress onto further sports studies at The College.

Head of AFCB’s Community Sports Trust Steve Cuss said, “The first three weeks of the course have gone really well. The students are all very focused and working hard. Potentially I am already seeing some coaching talent for the future who perhaps could coach for AFC Bournemouth on the many different projects we organise.”

Although enrolled as students at The College, participants spend their time training and studying at the Dean Court stadium, and get to meet and work with the team and professional support staff. Rob Garner, Head of Sixth Form Studies commented, “Getting involved with a professional football club and offering training at the stadium is a whole new ball name for us, pardon the pun! We had a lot of interest and those who have enrolled are committed to making a success of this unusual opportunity. We are proud of The Bournemouth and Poole College’s growing reputation for sports courses and this is an exciting addition to our portfolio.”

The College is currently recruiting for sports courses commencing this September. Places are still available on some courses, including the new Watersports Academy and Surf Academy recently announced and starting this summer. For details call 01202 205205.

College Helps U-drive on the Road To Success
5th May 2009

U drive train their staff in Customer Service

South coast based car, van and commercial vehicle hire company U-Drive are hoping to impress their existing customers and gain new business by providing first class customer care.

Richard Sutton, General Manager of U Drive has committed to encouraging his entire staff team to undertake customer service training. Taking advantage of the
Government’s Train to Gain initiative, most employees have already started their NVQ qualifications in Customer Service delivered by trainers from The Bournemouth and Poole College.

Richard said, “Our company policy is to invest in our staff development. We identified that the team were keen to undertake training through one of our staff surveys and were very pleased when The Bournemouth and Poole College Business Enterprise team took the time to discuss our requirements and gain an understanding of how we operate. We have a diverse workforce located across numerous sites in the south, but The College was able to offer excellent solutions and advise us on any grants available to help towards the cost.”

As well as customer service training Richard has helped his employees access essential skills training to help them brush up on their English skills, is putting some of his senior staff through management training, and is looking at the Business Improvement Techniques course.

Train to Gain offers subsidised or free training to business and industry across most sectors and was implemented to help companies survive through the recession, and to boost the skills of the British workforce.

The Bournemouth and Poole College is a leading provider of Train to Gain and other work-based training and is currently supporting many Dorset based companies from SME’s to large public and private sector organisations.

Gillian Donald, from The College’s Business Enterprise team said “We pride ourselves on ensuring that all training is relevant, tailored to suit the specific business objectives and delivered in a way that is flexible and suitable to work around the organisational needs of our customers. With U Drive we had some logistical issues to overcome but those who have participated in the training have embraced it and been very positive about the experience.”

Summing up Richard commented, “During the credit crunch it is vital that any business stays ahead of the game. At U Drive we know we offer value for money, and now I am confident that we will wow our customers with even greater customer service as well. An efficient business and a happy workforce will help us ride out the economic storm.”

The Bournemouth and Poole College’s new adult course guide ‘Opportunities’ has just been published, and applications are currently being taken for courses commencing this September. Ranging from professional qualifications, vocational accreditation, basic skills refreshers up to degree level study, there is something to suit most people’s needs.

College Marketing Director, Julie-Anne Houldey said, “Traditionally in times of recession we find that people do start to consider their skills and qualifications and often reflect on what they need to do to keep themselves employable and attractive in a competitive job market. We do offer a very comprehensive choice covering most career fields, and are happy to offer advice and guidance to any mature student who needs some hints and tips on which course to go for.”

Similarly, throughout the credit crunch The College has been working hard to support local business and industry. The Business Enterprise team has a team of dedicated skills brokers who offer their services free of charge to any employer who is thinking about skills development or reinforcement of staff qualifications. Certain grants and subsidies may be available, including promoting coaching skills in the workplace. The Business Enterprise team can visit you to discuss your training needs, provide information and advice about suitable qualifications and grants, or signpost you to other business support services.

To find out if your business is eligible for Train to Gain funding or to book an appointment with a Skills Broker call The Business Enterprise team on 01202 205500.

Student Gig in Aid of Guide Dogs for the Blind
3rd April 2009

Talented musicians organise charity gig

Motivation, helping charitable causes, hard work, and thinking about other people are not necessarily qualities that automatically spring to mind where the teenagers are concerned. However, bucking the trend is a group of talented musicians from The Bournemouth and Poole College Music and Sound Academy who have planned and organised a charity gig to be held at Mr Kyps in Poole to raise money for Guide Dogs for the blind.

As part of the BTEC 1st Diploma in Popular Music, students are required to take part in live performances, including the promotion and marketing of their bands and live shows. This year the students decided to give any profits and proceeds form their gig to this worthwhile charity having got to learn more about guide dogs form a fellow classmate.

Jason Aughton, 22, has been blind since the age of nine and has just undergone training with his first ever guide dog Volley. Jason, a popular member of the class, plays piano, drums, guitar and vocals and will be taking part in the May event in a 5-piece band formed on the course.

Course Tutor Pat Peiro said, “The Students are Keen to demonstrate to the public that not all young adults are Burberry cap-wearing, hooded thugs. These kids are talented, motivated and creative, and not only that – they have demonstrated a deep understanding about overcoming a disability. Having got to know Jason, and learnt about his training with Volley, they jumped at the chance to raise money for such a good cause. Its costs £10 per day to breed, train and support each guide dog – the lifetime cost of a guide dog is £35.000. However much we can raise it will help to make a difference.”

Although predominantly rock-orientated, the gig will feature a wide range of different genres, including world, Indie, Punk, Metal, Acoustic, Prog, Hip-Hop and rap music – including cover versions as well as original compositions. The event takes place on Monday 18th May 2009 at Mr Kyps in Ashley Cross, Poole, doors open at 7.30pm.

Tickets are just £4 in advance (or £5 on the door). For tickets contact Mr Kyps on 01202 748945 or visit their website at www.mrkyps.net.
