On St. Patrick’s Day, my son David and I flew from New York to Mozambique, Southern East Africa, where his wife Theresa is Chief of Child Protective Services for UNICEF. It took 48 hours to traverse seven time zones and two hemispheres to a continent full of strange and wonderful sights.

We spent two days in Kruger National Park in South Africa. Imagine the state of Vermont cleared of all resi dents for 100 years and reserved for native flora and fauna to flourish unimpeded while people were invited in as visitors: to observe, to shoot only with cameras, to sleep and eat at designated delightful spots, and leave.

On April 9th, Jen Finkle's first grade students, during their bi-weekly visit to the library, shared with us books that they wrote, illustrated & published! Jen's class usually comes to the library so that I can read and tell stories to them. This time, they turned things around. What a gift to have these talented young students read aloud their very own creations. With titles such as "Dogs", "Turtles", "Houses", "Frogs" and "Penguins", these non-fiction works delight readers with many fascinating facts. For example, did you know that "penguins like to cuddle"? Or that "turtles have to lay eggs or else they will become endangered"?

By John Bernhardt

There’s a demographic shift underway across our land. As the baby boomers begin to retire, a sizeable chunk of the American population is tipping toward the “golden years.” That shift poses unique challenges to America and her institutions.

On the home front, Andes Central School looks toward the growing retiree pool as a valuable natural resource. When possible, ACS seeks the service of retirees to fill part-time or interim positions at our school. The upcoming 2008-2009 school year will find five retirees on the team at Andes adding knowledge, wisdom, and over a century of public education service to the ACS staff.

ACS PTSA President

As you read this, the students at Andes Central School are reading to earn the privilege of dropping water balloons and buckets of “slime” on teachers, parents, and community members. “The Big Drop” scheduled for Saturday, June 7th (rain date June 14th) will be the finale of the school’s D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything And Read) event.

While most schools celebrate with a ten-minute D.E.A.R. break during the school day, the Andes’ PTSA wanted to take things a bit further. We wanted to do something this year that would motivate students to do more reading, involve more people in the community, and be a lot more fun.

It's Spring. It's May, although Mother Nature does not know what weather to bring. Daylight Savings Time is here; the sun rises earlier and sets later, giving us more time to be outside enjoying the greening of the earth. With fishing and turkey seasons open, outdoor sports teams in action, spring cleaning being done on homes and lawns, and gardens being planned, there's so much to be done. We all know how May's major holidays, Mother's Day and Memorial Day, are celebrated; I thought it would be interesting to research and learn about some of the lesser known holidays that are observed in May. Would you believe there's a holiday listed for each day of the month? Below are a few I found on the Internet and decided it would be fun to know about.
