Lindsay Kuehn of Minneapolis has been selected as one of the first summer interns in UALR’s Shepherd Poverty Studies Program, according to program director Dr. David Sink.

Kuehn, who just finished her first year at Bowen, will work at Legal Aid of Arkansas in Helena. She is enrolled in the current Juris Doctorate/Master of Public Service degree program offered by the Bowen School and the Clinton School of Public Service.

Bowen is one of the few graduate schools participating in the Shepherd Higher Education Consortium on Poverty at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va.

Professor Kelly Terry, director of externship programs, said UALR is among 13 consortium universities which are mostly located in the eastern United States. Other member institutions include Baylor University, Berea College, Spelman College, the University of Notre Dame, Furman University, and Virginia Military Institute.

The consortium integrates rigorous academic study and focuses direct service to disadvantaged communities and persons and supplements and enriches the education of undergraduate and law students in all majors and career paths. The intent of the program is to prepare students for lives aimed at diminishing poverty and enhancing human capability through professional and civic efforts.

The program’s summer interns from across the country will convene in Little Rock in August to report on their experiences.

Third-year student Michael Cantrell has been selected as one of the 2012 John Marshall Fellows.

The Claremont Institute only extends this honor to 14 law students or clerks each summer. The John Marshall Fellowship is seven days of intensive seminars in American political thought and jurisprudence. During the program, John Marshall Fellows will learn about and discuss the political philosophy of the American Founding, Abraham Lincoln, the Civil War, Progressivism, modern Liberalism, and Conservatism — all with a specific focus on the origins and development of American constitutional jurisprudence.

Third-year student Tabitha Lee has been selected as a finalist for the NAACP 2012 summer Law Fellow Program.

The NAACP Law Fellow Program is designed to give students who have completed at least one year of law school the opportunity to work for the summer at NAACP Headquarters in Baltimore, Md. Those selected for the program will work with civil rights attorneys on relevant issues concerning economic justice, education, housing, voting rights and environmental justice; perform case investigation and assist with emerging litigation and administrative complaints; attend the NAACP National Convention and Continuing Legal Education Seminar; examine and evaluate citizen complaints of civil rights violations; and interact with civil rights leaders and attorneys.

Professor Frances S. Fendler of the UALR William H. Bowen School of Law, has joined Professor Robert Ragazzo of the University of Houston Law Center as an author for the second edition of Closely Held Business Organizations: Cases, Materials, and Problems (West 2d ed. 2012).

The second edition of Closely Held Business Organizations continues the previous edition’s concentration on agency law, non-corporate entities, and closely held corporations. The book covers the many issues springing from the popularity of the LLC and is the most comprehensive on the market. Containing many problems, the book sharpens class discussion of the legal issues related to the LLC. In addition, the teacher’s manual remains one of the most comprehensive in the field, with summaries of all principal cases, answers to note questions, and supplemental material to enhance class presentation.

The second edition updates the first by including a number of contemporary cases and additional cases elaborating on various points of agency, partnership, and LLC law. The authors have revised the LLC chapter to cover the Revised Uniform Limited Liability Company Act (2006). While the book retains its focus on closely held businesses, it now contains a new chapter for faculty who wish to cover important topics regarding public corporations, including insider trading, federal proxy regulation, and contests for corporate control.

George Mader began listening to the KUAR radio program “Tales From the South” when he moved to Little Rock from Las Vegas to teach Rhetoric, Writing, and Advocacy at the UALR William H. Bowen School of Law in fall 2011.

“I listened to the show all fall, then attended one of the shows this spring. Along the way, I learned they had an upcoming show, linked to the Arkansas Literary Festival, that wanted stories from childhood. I thought I had a story that would fit the show perfectly.”

His story, “A Defining Moment,” was chosen as one of the top three entries in the Telling Tales Contest. As a winner, Mader’s work will be featured as a part of the April 17 program taped in North Little Rock. Entries were required to be literary memoirs, and Mader’s relates an episode from his adolescence.

Mader began writing for pleasure about 15 years ago, shortly before he began law school, and he has always dreamed that he would “one day get paid just to write.” Mader has read his stories – many inspired by his rural Minnesota childhood and his experiences in small towns all over the country – at fringe festivals and he continues to seek out opportunities to share his writing with others.

“There are certain things I like writing about, things that happen to me – small moments between people from small places.” Mader said. “I’m excited about the opportunity to read here.”

The show will be taped in front of a live audience during the Literary Festival, then broadcast on KUAR later this spring. In addition, it will be available for viewing on the Tales from the South YouTube channel.

Mader grew up the youngest of seven children in a Midwestern farm family. Though neither of his parents was able to attend high school, all seven children graduated college. George was a mathematics professor for several years before he attended law school. He has taught at the University of Illinois and UNLV.

When 2011 Bowen graduate Michael Anthony Salorio went home to the southern California desert to practice law, he knew he wanted to open his own practice.

He began practicing in areas – like bankruptcy and immigration – where he felt comfortable because of prior experience and course work at Bowen. But there were elements about opening a law firm that were still foreign to the former newspaper reporter and paralegal.

That’s where Salorio’s scholarship to the Solo Practice University (SPU) came in handy.

The online resource center for solo practitioners provides video lectures, classes, questionnaires, intake forms, as well as discounts on goods and services that smaller firms need everyday.

“I had a plan before I ever went to law school,” he said. “I wanted to establish a practice out here and exploit the professional networks that I built up during my reporting days. My goal was to be a successful small-town practitioner in a small rural county.”

However, being on his own has forced Salorio not only to use his own networks in southern California, but he also has to be inventive on how he manages his time in the practice. He is a sole proprietor, which means that he must answer every phone call, and handle marketing and advertising for the firm, and all other business that an office manager would take care of in a bigger firm.

“I have to do everything for myself,” he said. “It feels great to be my own boss because no one but myself tells me what to do. But with that privilege comes a lot of responsibility. It’s totally different from when I was a reporter or paralegal because I’m the attorney of record—the buck stops with me.”

Salorio is also using more than his networking skills to promote his business. Out of 10 clients, nine are Hispanic. He counts his Spanish fluency and willingness to work with Spanish-language media as an advantage. His familiarity with technology is serving to be a competitive advantage as well.

“I integrate technology as much as possible, but I don’t buy something for just the bells and whistles, or because it’s new,” Salorio said. “My office computer network is totally wireless, and I use a Square reader with an iPod to accept credit card payments. I print my own postage, which saves me trips to the post office, and I run as much of a paperless office as I can, and I conduct almost all of my legal research online. ”

Salorio knows it will take several years to be able to make a good living from his firm. He feels the sacrifices are worth it – just like his hard work when he was a student at Bowen.

“You can afford to specialize in bigger cities, but in a rural county you have to handle many different types of cases to stay in business,” Salorio said. “Bowen prepared me well. I took every bar course offered except conflicts because it wasn’t tested on the California Bar Exam. It wasn’t easy for me to take all but one of the bar courses offered at Bowen – I had to take six finals one semester as a result – but it all paid off.

“Only 55 percent of California bar takers passed the July 2011 examination. If I hadn’t passed on that first try, then I couldn’t have hanged a shingle this past December. I had to pass on my first try, or I couldn’t have opened my first practice because the money that I used to open it would’ve instead gone toward taking the bar exam a second time. Failure was definitely not an option for me.”
