Learn to bowl with a reactive ball right off the bat.
Before getting my first reactive ball (Storm Spit Fire) I bowled league for fun with house balls and rental shoes so I kind of started learning with a reactive ball.

Since I naturally threw a back-up ball I had little trouble with spares initially, but as I went on I lost that ability so had to re-learn a straight release. I do sometimes attempt to hook my plastic ball into 7-pins (not sure why; maybe it's the lack of confidence; I'm left-handed) but would end up throwing it in the gutter. Still haven't found a good way to shoot 10-pins yet but I hope it'll come along soon.<br/>

When I first started out I really didn't know how much oil counted as &quot;heavy&quot; oil. When I first learned to hook the ball I saw really thick rings of oil on the ball and couldn't hook it much but I thought it was just my lack of hand or an aggressive enough ball. But when I started visiting other centers in the area and had the ball roll out less than halfway down I realized how oily the lanes at my local center actually are.<br/>

One thing that stands out to me, is that Brunswick tends to get into a roll early. Lower RG balls. LM and the VG tend to roll late - LM balls are all pretty high RG. That's what the lack of filler gets you - more weight to the outside of the ball.
I can see the early Brunswick ball comment. And, I can accept that as I used to roll 1. But, I don't think the L/M comment holds, as I also rolled them for the 3 years prior with better success. It's something that I am doing recently.

If I could get a video, I'd post it. But, my son broke my camera.

Hey, lmfcoa, maybe we could meet next week again, and you could take some pix?
It could be with the recent changes you aren't matching up well with the conditions with the balls you are using. You admit to using balls with snappier back ends over the last two years. Add in more revs and you can have some issues with back row pins especially the 8 or 9. Maybe going back to so<br/>

Tomorrow my team bowls the first place team to see who's gonna take the 1st quarter. We started the season horrible! The 1st week the oposing team had series of (788), (737), (750), (699), and a (826)! Needless to say we didn't win. But over the last three weeks we've won 19 of a possible 21 points to slip into 2nd place. Hopefully we have another strong week collectively..<br/>

League makeup today. 187, 175, 185. The first 2 were with the Saphire Zone and I almost found something by looking way down the lane, although it still came up high a lot. I'll try it some more. The 3rd game was the Pearl Hammer Urethane. It stopped moving well after a few shots and toward the end I left a 5-6 and a 5. I have my first lesson with a coach tomorrow. We'll see what she says:)<br/>

There is a list of coaches in the entire state of Texas, you can find one nearest you, Frank Sumrall is from the Houston area and is silver level, I would start with him and see if he can point you in the right direction as to where to get your ball drilled properly and how best to progress with your game.

Click on this link: http://www.bowl.com/coaching/index.jsp

Then go to find a coach at the top right corner and then type Texas, or your zip code and see who interests you.

Post back any questions and let me know how it goes.<br/>

I've never seen a clip where Pete Weber use a thumb that covers only the thumb. I know he uses a golfer-like glove with the thumb removed to save the fingers from all the games they bowl in week and a season. Much like others like Wes Mallot do but with tape wrapped around them.<br/>

First of all, the tip off is the callus. You shouldn't have any if your balls are fitted properly, and you don't squeeze the ball. Secondly, all of your balls should be fitted the same. I had this trouble when I had balls drilled at different proshops. I finally selected the one I could work with, and changed them all to be the same. Each ball now feels the same on my thumb.

Keep this as a reference. I do.

That's why the pins are round.

It's what makes bowling a fun game.

Just like gambling, it's a stochastic activity. No throw can guarantee you a strike, but a more consistent throw will get you statistically better results.<br/>

Bowled the V&amp;DTBF City Youth Tournament today. I knew things weren't going to start on a good note when I had to walk to the bus stop through a thunderstorm lugging 50lb of equipment, then to the bowling center after getting off the subway, and everything was soaked by the time I got there.

I started with 3 games in the team event, then bowled the doubles event with my brother (who's using a house ball and rental shoes), and then finally, singles. I can't remember my exact games but relative to my average, it went like this: over, under, over, under, over, under, a lot under, a lot over, over.

One huge thing I learned about today was lane transitions. Sure, in league I might have to adjust a couple of boards from start to finish, but after crossing with several high-rev lefties and bowling 9 games, I had to make some drastic changes. Started by throwing straight down 12-13 board with the Fury with little hand, with decent results. By the third game it wasn't holding up very well,<br/>

Well just got back from working with the coach and boy was he unhappy with me. Had me do a whole game of one step drills then whole game of 2 step drills. Stopped me in the middle of the third game and made me do 2 step drills again.

Finally bowled regular games fourth and fifth and scored 190 201 respectively. Felt much much better coach just muttered looks somewhat better lol love that guy.

He only worked with Jordan for one game on release and ball speed told me I better start trying to learn from my son instead of vice versa.<br/>

My Wed night team includes a hothead and his father. On Thursday they also bowl with another of my wed team members in the same house. Hot head wasn't doing so well and on one of his spares he threw the ball thru the air to about 25 down the lane. An elderly woman from another team confronted him, it escalated to shouting, bad language and intervention from the center manager who threw the hot head and his father (who came to his son's defense once the manager got involved) out of the building with a warning not to come back on any night. The decision was subsequently backed up by the corporate owners of that center and the 4 others they own in Tucson.

My problem is that they won't be allowed to bowl on our wed night team. OUr team captain says he won't bowl with 2 vacants on the team. It's a 5 man male league, very competitive sponsored by Miller Lite.<br/>

Thanks Coach, I never noticed how small my 3rd step was. I guess that I am starting to pull on my arm near the end of my backswing. Also in looking at the back view. I don't really see bobbing of the head as much as the head getting progressively lower throughout the approach. I have had folks tell me &quot;keep your chin still&quot; in the past. Let me work on those and I'll post another set of videos.<br/>

I am always disappointed when I hear about this happening. I haven't seen your bowling ball, but if it cracked within you first couple of games, it sounds like a proshop error. I worked in a proshop a few years ago and seen this happen often. It is either one of two things: You finger holes were drilled into each other(I have noticed proshops doing this so the grips sit flush in the hole this way they don't have to cut or trim the grip.),or the proshop didn't sand or bevel the edges of the fingerholes after drilling. These are two common errors I see to this day. I would take the ball back to the proshop and demand that it gets repaired properly.

I don't know about you guys but two hundred dollars is alot of money to spend on a ball that cracks the first time you use it!!<br/>

Sk8, I never really noticed this before but if I try to do your drill I have to curl my fingers, otherwise they want to come out. I never noticed this before because I normally don't do that drill and when I'm bowling normally I squeeze which naturally has the fingers curling.

Anyways, I was wondering how normal it is for the thumb to slip when I hang the ball down at my side(still stays on). For what it's worth, the slipping I'm talking about is also sort of a lean of the thumb towards the upper part of the thumb hole. Hopefully you can picture that.<br/>

Great analogy. Watch Robert Smith. His hand after release is wide open and never turns to the side ever. Works for him and look how devestating his strike ball is.<br/>
