Tutorial: How to Curl Hair with No Heat - Rag Curls

This curling method is not new to the world, but still a great way of curling hair with no heat. The best part is, it is more comfortable to sleep on than bandu knots! You can use rags like I did, or thicker socks for a fatter curl.

I started with the crown of her head, but you can try different ways of dividing the hair until you find what works for you.

Spritz with just a little water. Don't use too much or it may not dry by morning.

Tuck the ends of the hair under the rag.

Start rolling the hair onto the rag until you reach the head.

Tie a simple knot. It doesn't have to look perfect.

I separated the rest of her hair into 3 sections.

Tie those up and you're ready for bed! So easy!

In the morning, untie the rags and lightly comb through the hair with your fingers. Wow! Beautiful curls! The rag on the left actually slipped quite a bit, but you couldn't tell once the hair was down!

I love rag curls! This method creates loose curls with no heat, the hair stays curly all day, it's easy to do, comfortable to sleep on, and doesn't take much time! Yay!

Bandu Knots: Attempt #2

We tried it again! Attempt #1 was a bit of a giggle. Wow! Those were some TIGHT curls! We promised to show you another try at this no-heat curling method, so here we go!...

This time, just 4 knots.

She still thinks she looks like an alien. Is there such a thing as a cute alien? I think so.

This is just after undoing the knots.

They did relax a little more than this throughout the day.

Aww......

I will guess what you are thinking next: "What about little sister's crrrrazy hair?"

Well, let's see....

We tried just 2 knots on her. This would actually be cute as its own hairstyle!

Ah. Much better! Although, definitely less entertaining than last time!

Tutorial: How to Curl Hair with No Heat - Bandu Knots

Here is my first attempt at Bandu Knots as a no-heat curling method!

Bandu Knots (or Bantu Knots) can actually be worn as a style one day, and then untwisted for curls the next day. We just wanted to try sleeping on them, and only using them as a curling method.

Supplies used: water spritzer, a comb, and elastics (you could use bobby pins instead, but that doesn't sound too comfy for sleeping).

First, gather a section of hair and spray the hair lightly with water. Note: Don't spray too much or it may not dry by morning.

Larger sections result in looser curls and smaller sections result in tighter curls.

Do your best to form diamond-shaped sections! It will help the curls blend together (and not look like sections), when you undo the twists in the morning.

This little cutie has really short, thin, wispy hair, but they say Bandu Knots can work on all types of hair, so here we go!...

Next, twist the section of hair. (Oh yes, she can be rather silly!)

Keep twisting until it twists onto itself...

...and ends up like this...

Finally, put the elastics on, and pull faces in the mirror (optional).

I suppose she's right - she does look a little bit like an alien.

Here is a longer, thicker-haired version of it.

No, we don't feed our girls sugar at bedtime. They are just crazy and fun, all on their own.

That's all there is to it! Now it's time to sleep on them.

Ok - so... I realize this is a really sad picture, but this is how her tiny hair turned out. She wasn't too happy with it (obviously)! We ended up wetting it down and putting it in pigtails for the day. Bummer.

She has such thin hair, it appears she only needs a couple of looser knots. The next attempt should yield looser, larger curls. (I hope!)

Confession: I did giggle a little on the inside when I took this photo. Ok, a lot.

Hmmm... not tooooo bad. She has much thicker, longer hair, but I still like a looser curl, so next time we'll have to try bigger sections of hair, less knots, and a looser twist on her.

This small flower is about 2-2.5". It is attached to a 1.75" ribbon-lined alligator clip. The clip is partially lined with quality grosgrain ribbon to allow for easy clipping, a stronger grip, and a finished look. The ribbon ends and flower petals are heat-treated to prevent fraying. The clip includes a "gripper strip" to keep it in place.
